I'm read too often that people consider spanking acceptable. Its discipline and showing love. Well, imagine I take hold of my wife by the wrist, turn her around, and swat her ass. In your presence. Nothing overly hard, but enough to sting and leave a temporary red mark.
How would YOU react? Indifference, anger, condemnation? Would you call the police? Would you talk to my wife at a later time? What would you say to ME?
Somehow there is a large segment of society that has not accepted that any physical act committed on a child is wrong. Whether by poor examples, laziness, or ignorance, the act of spanking of children goes on and that horrifies me.
I've seen several very public displays of spanking recently that have left me shaken. Almost all my friends/family see nothing wrong with a "swat". The rationale is always their own parents did it out of love.... more »

My summer no cable TV experiment.
I've just ditched cable TV. I use a Roku with Netflix/Hulu Plus/Amazon. This weekend I started using Aereo and now get all NYC TV stations live streaming via my Mac mini to my HDTV.
My cable bill was $194 a month plus Netflix/Hulu/Amazon. $65 of that was my broadband.
The roku channels totaled $25 a month.
Final monthly TV/ internet viewing bill I was paying: $219
Aereo is $8 a month. I spent $19 on an indoor antenna to get local networks to compliment NYC network channels.
So now my monthly cost (internet/Roku channels/Aereo is a total of $99.
Savings of $120 a month.
I'm a TV fan so this experiment will be interesting. There are various means to watch current shows online as well.

My wife and I both just started using Google Voice numbers on our cell phones. It works perfectly except for one thing. When we text each other the messages come through, but often it's not our GV numbers showing at the top of screen. Our names are there, but the phone numbers shown are from area codes nowhere near where we live. A couple of times our GV numbers have appeared, but it's been hit or miss. This doesn't affect us in Hangouts, obviously. We havent' given out numbers yet to family/friends/work and there is concern that messages will get messed up if the correct numbers aren't displaying.
Thoughts?

I've been switching my texting over to Hangouts for all my contacts that use Google. If I don't want my phone making a sound when someone contacts me or when a new message appears, is there a visual reminder?
I'm finding that if I mute my phone that I have no idea if I'm getting a new text in Hangouts.

A group of kids from the NYC foster care system wrote and acted in the movie Know How. One of the young ladies involved was kind enough to write about why the movie was so important to her.

If you aren't on Spotify or Google Play cranking "13", the first Ozzy-led Black Sabbath album since 1978 than you aren't right in the head. "13" is hard rock the way it's supposed to be. Guys in their mid and late 60's totally schooling young "rock" bands.

I'm breaking my never beg for a share this one time to spread a message of hope that we all say we want more of today.
Several weeks ago while mindlessly checking my Google+ feed, a post jumped out of my stream. It was an urgent plea looking for people to become involved in a Kickstarter project for a film called Know How. The film’s writing and acting was done by former foster children living in New York City. The movie is about empowerment, inspiration... as well as demonstrating that young people coming from some very difficult situations can still have powerful aspirations and dreams that won’t be denied. Know How is an expressive collaboration bringing children of the NYC foster care system together to create a work that is neither documentary nor fiction, but a hybrid of both.
My wife and I were instantly touched by the Know How project and became backers of the film... more »

This is an interesting take on the design process behind iOS 7. As someone who moved from iOS to Android last week I didn't see anything that made me regret moving on. I'm curious on thoughts about this writers take.

Every other year my town celebrations "Old Home Days." There is a parade, followed by festivities, food music, and finally fireworks. I live on Main Street and the parade goes right by my house. I loved this float of little children blowing bubbles and celebrating the coming of summer.
Fireworks and fried dough tonight.

This weeks cool song list was chosen by +Joshua Sutton. He did a great job in variety. Indie rock from Weezer, Cake, Rancoteurs to singer/songwriter Brett Dennen, to Brazilian acoustic samba and more. A very cool top song of the week.
The updated Spotify playlist is linked in the story. Once you subscribe every Friday the playlist will update.
If you want to pick the 10 cool songs of the week let me know.
Thanks Joshua

If you're not dismayed at what is going on with the NSA and the Obama administrations continuation and acceleration of the Bush domestic surrveillance programs then you're not paying attention.

I was invited to write stories on Medium. Medium is an interesting new format by Evan Williams and Biz Stone, the co-creators of Twitter. This is my first story, a true tale of playing a game of trivia for one million dollars in 1997.

And I bet the fact that Douglas has a new movie out with Matt Damon has nothing to do with his comments and now clarification. The need to stay relevant in Hollywood reduces people to caricatures to the point they will throw their own spouse under the bus (as it appears he did) to stay in the public eye.

I just bought two Nexus 4 phones from Tmobile for my wife and I. She uses Android already, I use an iPhone 4. I have a Nexus 7 tablet so I think the experience will be fine. I'll save $94 a month on our mobile bill as opposed to Verizon since I won't need the mobile wifi hotspot anymore. I love that Tmobile allows their phones to be used for that. I haven't actually played with the Nexus 4, I'm going by reviews and folks here.
I'll know Wednesday night when I get the phones in the mail and port the numbers over from Verizon whether I made a mistake or not. I doubt I did. After that it's selling my unlocked Verizon iPhone 4 on ebay.
Kinda scary. I've never bought a mobile phone without being in the store.

I've always loved the Stones music. That said, never been a Jagger fan. He is notorious for not wanting to play benefits, for squeezing every last dime out. This tour featured unsold 600-2500 upclose seats. Springsteen, U2, and many other huge acts play Glastonbury and raise no fuss. It's not surprising that the Stones are locked in a money dispute with BBC

This weeks 10 cool songs include solo Joey Ramone, a lesser known REM song, Daft Punk, Nick Waterhouse, John Butler Trio, Marcus Miller and more. The cool song of the week is by a huge band that recorded the song (and album) under it's alter ego. Try and guess who the band is without Googling.
The playlist is available at Spotify and Google Play. All three weeks are one playlist and once you subscribe to the playlist it will auto update every Thursday night.
If you would like to pick a 10 cool songs of the week let me know of interest in the comment section. You can pick and I'll write a tag to each song or you can write the tags. Either way is fine by me.

Life is beautiful, life is hard. Getting up each day and putting one foot in front of the other to be responsible can be a real drag. But do it we must. There are moments where we need a tonic to pick us up. This gorgeous song by Donna the Buffalo does it for me.

[CEO Anthony] Wood said the new money will fund a new push for Roku — getting its new software installed as a de facto operating system for a new wave of smart TVs coming to the market. Wood figures that most TV manufacturers, with the exception of Samsung, aren’t going to have the desire or ability to create decent software for their boxes, and he’d like Roku to assume that role.
