Justin Hill22,601114 HDR Photographers :- Here's my second circle share for the weekend. I have two circles for photographers and this is my second which concentrates on those that indulge in HDR photography. Some in this circle use the technique all the time and others only once in a while. Each and every one of them is a great photographer in their own right which is why I added them and created this circle carefully over time. You won't see much overblown HDR here, they are all very good at what they do and their images prove it. Once again this circle was put together by me and all within it were hand picked due to my likes and preferences. If I have left you out then I am sorry but I simply cannot put everyone I see in a circle so i have been deliberately selective.  Please feel free to add them all to your own circles or pick your way through and select just a few. By all means share if you so wish. Enjoy...2013-10-13 20:19:15114202

Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204

PhotoBlog Entry: "Bedside"
www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/09/26/bedside/

It’s very rare that I will push my ISO to 400 when bracketing for HDR. However this is the max ISO I’ve ever utilized. No noise reduction was applied to this image and for good reason. Why would you want to soften all that texture? ISO 400 can provide you with enough sensor power to keep you exposure times low, if your pressed for time. A lot of people think HDR produces noise. Well, it can certainly add noise but it’s improper brackets and not enough of them that will produce noise in your HDRs. Did I mention how much I love tone-mapping in Lightroom 4.1 using 32-bit files? This is because of the minimal noise I get in my merged images. When processing grungy scenes like this, noise can add texture. Just make sure it’s the right noise your utilizing. I can’t recommend shooting at this ISOfor clean ... more »

Four Summers Ago

4 summers ago, I spent the first time ever shooting ocean landscapes on the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey. Having just picked up my first DSLR less than a year earlier, I remember standing out here hoping for something magical. Instead, I just got some dude with his hands up!

Happy 4th of July! Here is a long exposure photograph I spent about 10+ hours working on recently after being inspired (once again) by the Master +Joel Tjintjelaar! This image was taken in September of 2012 and I recently brought it to life thanks to Joel's SGM (selective gradient masking) Technique.

You can be inspired too by purchasing Joel Tjintjelaar's workflow video tutorial for only $99!

“I’m a greater believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it”
- Thomas Jefferson

I can't call myself lucky person but I always give my best at work! Yet nothing good came out of it (can't even get my euro back from the lottery) but I always hope for the best.

If you haven't heard yet, I was working hard on the design of HDR One - Online Photography Magazine in the last one month and I'm proud it started so well. Everybody loved it and as +Jimmy McIntyre said we reached the last month issue downloads in just 36hours.

This whole thing wouldn't be possible without the help of +Jim Nix, +Joseph T. Meirose IV, +Conor MacNeill, +Elia Locardi, +Scott Frederick and all the rest who helped out for this issue.

Thank you all!

A Memory...

Your viewing an image I completed about 1 year ago. I captured it the morning of September 7, 2011 in Cape May, NJ. This is the sunken Concrete Ship and the blurry silhouette is of an old man that used to play on this ship as a little boy. This was when it was more intact offshore. While capturing this image, he decided to walk into my frame and chat with me about his memories. I showed this image to my wife last night and she was surprised I’ve not published it. Why I’ve been holding back this long, I have no idea. Maybe because it’s not perfect in my opinion, something a lot of us creative beings can get caught up in. If I take away all the technical and perfectionist thoughts I have about this image, I’m left with a memory!

Here’s a shot of the Revel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  I took this while on Summer vacation in September in Ocean City.  I always wanted to shoot this building and took advantage of the blue hour and 5 brackets from 2 seconds to 30 seconds.  I wonder how the Revel will stand up to Hurricane Sandy?  If things stay on track, it will receive a direct hit.  If you find yourself in the path of Sandy, please be safe!

I have to say, it’s a real pain in the ass to lug around two cameras and two tripods! The D7000 is my main setup on the very sturdy Induro carbon fiber tripod. Which after 3 cheap tripods being ruined in the salt water, it was time to make the investment! I’m utilizing the +Promote Control as some of you may know. It’s a great device and a real treat to work with. Honestly, it allows me to do this! While my D7000 is firing off a 4-5 minute bracket sequence I have my old D5000 with a nice piece of glass shooting in monochrome on an old tripod! This area of each cellblock was designed to allow prisoners out of their cells. Apparently, they played games and hung out in this area together. I’m assuming while the guards walked along the outside. The concrete floor has round marble game markings and some nice subtle details still exist within this building, it’s quite amazing!

Processed in +Nik Software's Silver Efex Pro 2. That software rocks! I really enjoy how easy I can get the look I want. I’m a sucker for high contrast and SEP2 allows me all the contrast and texture one could ask for! ___

Wouldn’t it be great if every load of laundry included a beer? I may never get the folding completed! But that’s ok, because my wife would argue that I never actually move my clothes from the side of the bed. Never mind the washing machine! Hey, I try to help around the house!

Back to the Old York County Prison where you guessed it! This is where the laundry was done. I’m uncertain how often inmates would clean their jail suits but my guess is not often! Maybe this was a laundry area specifically for the guards, to drink! My goal was to bring focus to the beer can and let the rest of the scene go slightly out of focus. I achieved this with an aperture of f/4, but that still wasn’t enough. I began to manipulate the scene slightly using a vignette. But even still the focus wasn’t enough on the beer can. So I decided to fire up Focal Point by onOne Software! Using a a round focus bug around the can and a blur amount of just 1%, I found it to be too much blur, even at that low amount. So I used the paint focus option on the washing machine and green cabinets with a 50% opacity. Bingo! It was now starting to take shape. You may envision something in your mind and execute it in the field. But sometimes it’s just not going the way you had hoped in post production. This is where our digital tools come in handy. They help you to achieve your vision. Even if you can’t find any clean underwear! ;)

*About the #alphabetcircles *

I am sharing active photogs, no matter what their photography type or number of followers.. so there are all types in here... no one genre or photographic style dominates.

Yes, I visited EACH of the streams myself to validate this.

The folks in this circle have all been active in the last month , share their own work, and their FIRST name start with "S"

There are a few who don't follow me (yet I hope) but whose work I really enjoy.

I hope everyone will find someone new in here to follow, there is a LOT of great talent here.

Why Re-Sharing the circle matters?

Sharing helps you be seen by different folks, because the few common folks we usually share with each other on G+.

There are so many good photographers on G+ that it is impossible to find them all.  Shares help make those introductions.

I will never force anyone to share a circle to be in them, but reshares are always appreciated.

The York County Prison makes use of a center stair case and 4 cell blocks on each floor. You can get a real sense of what it must of been like to move around in this building, if you had the opportunity to as an inmate. This shade of yellow and green dominate throughout the building and are an interesting color choice. In this environment I find these colors to be rather freaky for a prison. Then again, maybe it’s the peeling paint and lighting that are giving me that vibe!

(Please note the York County Prison is under patrol and is posted No Trespassing. I normally do not disclose location information, but in this case the property is For Sale! This is an attempt to bring awareness to the sale of this property, requested by the owner!)

I had to run a 4 minute long exposure because this cell sits in total darkness. I didn’t realize until I was editing last night, that there were so many names scribbled on the wall to the left! Some of the names appear to be of famous singers from long ago. Others could be nicknames of prisoners that stayed in this very small double cell.

I look forward to sharing more images with you over time and of course the blog that will be created about York County Prison!

This usually gives me the best LE effect and depending on the light, I’ll adjust my camera settings accordingly. At this time of morning, a few minutes after sunrise 10 stops is plenty. Any later in the day and I would have to add a 6 stop filter stacked on top of my 10 stop. This equals 16 stops of light reduction. The benefit of this is a wider aperture, which really does wonders for long exposures. Shooting at f/16 and below is ideal and if possible I try to achieve an aperture of f/13 or even f/11. Do you use and Neutral Density filter? I’d love to hear about your experiences with it!

So what does it take to get more engagement from Google+? I remember a time when interaction here was amazing. Now, I never know what to expect. Is it because I spend more time on Facebook? Am I not engaging enough here on G+? Are a majority of the people I circled, no longer active? Do I smell? I wonder! ;)

Today's Repost: From an abandoned State Hospital!

I can’t recommend shooting at this ISO for clean images like interior real estate or a majority of landscape scenes. But he next time you find yourself in a grungy low lit space with little time, try boosting your ISO. You’ll notice it’s a lot easier to wait for a 10 second exposure than a 40 second one. Especially if the photographers you are shooting with aren’t going to wait around!

Is it because I spend more time on Facebook? Am I not engaging enough here on G+? Are a majority of the people I circled, no longer active? Do I smell? I wonder! ;)

This image I finished almost 2 months ago but never posted it! After going through my catalog just now, I realized it was just sitting there. Sleeping! Seeing this image reminded me again what a great shoot I had visiting this abandoned New Jersey State Hospital. Almost every shot I took that day is an image I would consider posting. Maybe it’s my developing eye that helped me to achieve this? I know for sure it’s one of the first times this has happened to me after a shoot! Do you struggle while on a shoot? Do you take too many images and realize later you wasted time taking those shots? I think this is something we all struggle with as photographers. Sometimes less is more!

Wow, has it been almost a month since I posted on my blog? Crazy! Just to fill you in, I’ve been busy actually making money with my photography. This leaves me little to no time at the moment to work on personal images. I’ve been fortunate enough to be work with an amazing agent named Eric Axelson at Kurfiss Sotheby's International Realty. He saw my fine art work and thought it would be worth the investment to hire me for Architectural Real Estate Photography. This home is located at 538 Moreland Road Huntingdon Valley, PA.. My goal here was to render an HDR image as close to natural as possible and tone mapping in Lightroom 4.1 using the new Photomatix 32 bit Floating Point TIFF plugin helped me achieve this as a first step in the process. I’ve recently been using the Promote Control by Promote Systems to help me better brackets these scenes for HDR. This was a 9 exposure bracket sequence done a 1EV and the Promote Control allows me to achieve this with ease! Especially when exposures can reach the 1 minute or longer mark! I hope to work more with the Kurfiss Sotheby’s team and become their go to photographer for listings in their area!

www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/08/29/abandoned-theater-backstage/

The backstage area of this abandoned theater was speaking to me. The way the sunlight was shining in created a no brainer kind of shot! Just point up and shoot! Minus the lens flare, which is something I try to avoid 99% of the time, I’m really happy with the way I captured the light rays! I really hope this location is restored and legally it has to, but that doesn’t mean the current owners won’t let it go to waste. They have no intentions on restoration. They are interested in selling it though, any takers?

With all the rain I’m seeing outside today, I can only wonder what this place looks like after a monsoon! The day we visited, we had dry conditions and I really love the way the light was fusing in! I decided to frame this off center. I find too ofter when photographers shoot a hallway they always compose head on. Something I try to avoid if possible. As always, vanishing points are a great addition to any composition. The way the light and dark areas of this scene play off each other, really bring the whole image together for me! PhotoBlog Entry: "Without You I'm Dust"
www.scottfrederickphotoblog.com/2012/08/23/without-you-im-dust/

Without someone to love and care for you, what does your future hold? What is your value, without someone to share yourself with? All things are dependable on resources. Without these vital resources we are all just dust blowing in the wind. The wind will carry you but not support you all the time. Sometimes you rise and sometimes you fall, sometimes you fly and sometimes you crawl. Without the wind your dust becomes motionless. Without motion, we decay and become part of the earth that consumes us! Selfishness will get you nowhere. You have to give in order to receive and the ones that have given yet been left to rot, are the true victims of the selfish act!

Gathering your thoughts can be a tough obstacle to accomplish. This room reminds me of a place that people would use to do just that! Lately I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. All for the better of course! ;) Things are coming to a crossroad for me mentally. It’s really time to buckle down and step up swinging with full force. I’m not being specific here for one main reason, which I’ve learned in my old age of 33! ;) I don’t really like to speak of things until they happen. This is a rule I live by in my personal life and now it’s becoming more apparent in my artistic endeavors as well. I’m looking forward to putting the finishing touches on my thoughts and applying them to actions!

As always I forget to post on #tuesdecay ! Actually this week I have an excuse, I was in NYC! ;)
