Young Americans Lead Trend to Less Driving
For six decades, Americans have tended to drive more every year. But in the middle of the last decade, the number of miles driven — both over all and per capita — began to drop, notes a report to be published on Tuesday by U.S. Pirg, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

Selling web ads as time not space
I just saw some mind-bending work Chartbeat is about to release about measuring the time users spend exposed to an ad online.
As background, to quote Chartbeat CEO Tony Haile: “Chartbeat monitors activity by checking in with users every second and looking for signals (mouse movement, key strokes, etc) that show they are actively consuming the content in front of them. This means they can measure how long readers spend actively engaged on a page and what parts they’re reading. Because of this Chartbeat knows how long are actively reading while an ad is in view — both for an average user and the cumulative time of all users.” Chartbeat then did some internal research that found high correlation between engaged time exposed and a user’s ability to recall the advertiser’s brand and message. This has many implications:

Our cyborg future?
Humans vs. Machines: Match Made in Heaven, or Oil and Water?
...in the real-time information space, there’s a limit to how well bots can zero in on answers to some questions. That’s where human intelligence can help, complemented by the speed, accessibility and accuracy that technology can provide. The robust answers users demand rely upon a perfect mix of human and artificial intelligence: let’s call it “Hybrid Intelligence.” And the way it develops will determine the future of how we consume content.

Good or bad?
Applying Moneyball to the workforce?
Job vacancies haven’t come down from 2008 levels despite 30% greater unemployment (the Beveridge curve has a tail). Number of interviews and time to hire has doubled. Companies spend 40% or more of revenue on payroll and yet average turnover rates have climbed to 15%. Simple multiplication: *6% of revenue is wasted every year.*
My Bottom Line: companies seem to be spending too much time and too much money on only hiring rock stars... And they are making decisions based on gut feeling rather than data.
Nice article by +Frida Polli on Forbes:

Identity is about You not Them!
Excerpts from a post by +Doc Searls that explains the ongoing problem with Identity, Authentication, and Namespaces. Basically, yet another example of why we need to leverage the in-built architecture of the Web with regards to Web-scale verifiable Identity.
"I believe, as do more many others, that the only solution is for those with the damn names to be in charge of those names, and to identify themselves in their own ways to the many different systems that require putting those names in their namespaces."
You should be the overseer, manager, and controller of your Identity.

What happens if you give a thousand Motorola Zoom tablet PCs to Ethiopian kids who have never even seen a printed word?
Great Story!
MIT researches dropped off nearly a thousand Android tablets in two Ethiopian villages in boxes. These kids had never seen:
.. a book
.. a street sign
.. a label
.. ANY printed word
However, the story goes on to report...
"We left the boxes in the village. Closed. Taped shut. No instruction, no human being. I thought, the kids will play with the boxes! Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, but found the on/off switch. He'd never seen an on/off switch. He powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs [in English] in the village. And within five months, they had hacked Android. Some idiot in our organization or ... more »

Perception and Form
As we interact in the Google+ environment, we are also observers of our own interaction. This creates a duality within our minds where we ‘do’ and then we understand that we ‘did’ and analyse why. That action of self-analysis also creates its own complex dynamic.
To put this in a different form consider printing. The advent of printing turned spelling (up to that time left to each person’s inclination and penchant) into a skill and invented an entirely new profession (the lexicographer) and a new official arbiter (the dictionary). Printing did not just make spelling a necessary skill with a 'right' and 'wrong' but in doing so it also invited judgement where none had been applied before. By judging whether one could spell we suddenly had a yardstick by which to gauge a person's education, which impacted on his authority, reputation... more »

A reporter asked me today if +YouTube and other video sites should be self-censored or censored by the government to remove "all materials" that could be of help to would-be terrorists, after claims that the Boston bombing brothers supposedly were inspired and trained from Internet videos. I told him that not only was the concept abhorrent on civil liberties grounds and impractical, but could actually be counterproductive by making it more difficult for authorities to see what sorts of materials were circulating -- since censoring of public sites would not eliminate the items in question, only drive them underground.

Information technology amplifies irrational group behavior
Web tools and social media are our key sources of information when we make decisions as citizens and consumers. But these information technologies can mislead us by magnifying social processes that distort facts and make us act contrary to our own interests -- such as buying property at wildly inflated prices because we are led to believe that everybody else is. New research from the University of Copenhagen, which has just been published in the journal Metaphilosophy, combines formal philosophy, social psychology, and decision theory to understand and tackle these phenomena. "Group behaviour that encourages us to make decisions based on false beliefs has always existed. However, with the advent of the internet and social media, this kind of behaviour is more likely to occur than ever, and on a much larger scale, with possibly... more »

Some weekend food for thought - should we regulate the ability of firms to access social media posts?
I had a fascinating discussion with Helen Kennedy from Leeds University this week.
She approached me about an interview to support her research and book about social media monitoring.
During our interview, she was particularly interested on my view, and the view of the industry on the status of “public” social media posts.
In particular, she wanted to know if I felt the industry would (or could) be regulated so that consumers had the right to decide if their social media posts could be monitored or captured by social media monitoring firms.
It raises a very interesting question – how private are our public posts?
Also where do we draw the line?
Can a monitoring firm collect and store a public tweet or blog post? How about a newsp... more »

One of the things that is well established about local SEO is that getting your data consistent (or precise as implied by the jets below) allows search engines to TRUST the local data they see, and makes them more comfortable rank you higher, which leads to more traffic.
What is less understood is how much work that is! In a world with hundreds of sites/entities consuming the local data, each of which has update cycles you are already facing a tornado like challenge.
Layer on top of that a large business with hundreds of thousands of locations and you rapidly get - you guessed it - an epic furball.
The internal coordination and management efforts are a massive effort! Lots of data mapping, and a need to keep many processes working closely together!
