Some pretty cool stuff to play with when you got a minute (ok, few hours) alone in front of your computer. Better than go click-click endlessly:-)

"Blown Away"
First image from another fantastic night out. This was the scene near Bow Summit this morning at around 3:45. The Milky Way seemed to emerge directly from Crowfoot Mountain. I already miss the northern reaches of Banff National Park!
Note: I really don't endorse lying in the middle of the road for photos. I had not seen another vehicle for hours and it seemed like an OK thing to do...

6 Things to Love About The New Google+ Photos
There are a lot of features to discover in the new Google+! Here are some of my favorite updates to Photos you might not have found yet.
1. Highlights view. The new photos landing page is called Highlights and it's your photo timeline -- showing you not only your best photos, but the best photos your friends have shared with you.
2. Trash view. Now when you delete photos, they go to the trash for 60 days. When you visit your trash, you can choose to restore photos (for those "oops" moments) or delete them permanently.
3. Photos search. When you do a search from the photos page, we'll search all your uploaded photos. It's pretty smart too -- we've brought all the awesomeness of Google search to your photo collection.
4. New organize mode. We have ... more »

Go With The Flow
The Story Behind The Image
One sunny day at Long Pond in Acadia National Park, Maine I became fascinated by the patterns of light in water I saw in my viewfinder. Suddenly, the patterns were disrupted. I looked up and saw the source of the disturbance. My dogs had gone swimming in my picture. But I soon found that the new patterns they made were much more interesting. I decided to go with the flow. Instead of calling them back to the shore, I threw sticks into the water for them, simultaneously playing and photographing for the better part of an hour.
When I got my film back (Yes, this image was made during the transition from the ‘good old days’ to these ‘strange days’.) I was surprised once again by how complex and varied patterns of light can be. These patterns became more pronounced when symmetry, almost mandala-like, was created. Creatin... more »

Adobe & Law Enforcement
Meet Sr. Solutions Architect John Penn II
This is both sobering and inspiring.
"Many law enforcement agencies and communities this week are commemorating National Police Week, which takes place during the week of May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day. During this week, we’re thinking about how photographs play more of a role than ever in helping law enforcement officials gather evidence. To learn more, we met with Adobe Sr. Solutions Architect John Penn II, who dedicates his work to helping law enforcement solve cases with digital imaging technology ..."

Astonishing Underwater Sculptures: Vicissitudes
Vicissitudes depicts a circle of figures, all linked through holding hands.
These are life-size casts taken from a group of children of diverse ethnic background. Circular in structure and located five meters below the surface, the work both withstands strong currents and replicates one of the primary geometric shapes, evoking ideas of unity and continuum.
This exhibit sits on the floor of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Grenada and in case you thought it was just art, it has a very practical purpose as well. The Cancun Marine Park attracts over 750,000 tourists a year and this places a lot of pressure on the natural coral reefs. These sculptures are designed to encourage coral growth and thereby add to the oceans biological flourishing.
The project is unique in its fusion of public art with environmental... more »

What You Eliminate Is Just As Important As What You Include
The Stories Behind The Images
You may have heard the phrase, “You’re responsible for everything that’s included within the frame of your images.” Few stop to consider that this also means, “You’re responsible for everything that’s not included within the frame of your images.” We can eliminate objects in the frame in many ways – moving the frame, moving objects, and retouching are the three most common and progressively make pre-visualization more challenging. All three practices came into play while making this image.
One day, I drove to a remote corner of California’s Death Valley National Park called the Racetrack a location famous for the unusual paths that rocks made on the clay playa’s time-cracked mud. Theories about the cause of this mysterious phenomenon include ice, wind, magnetism, and ... more »

Awesome Satellite Timelapses Powered By Google
Learn more about these awesome timelapse videos here.

“Spacecraft and telescopes are not built by people interested in what’s going on at home. Rockets fly in one direction: up. Telescopes point in one direction: out. Of all the cosmic bodies studied in the long history of astronomy and space travel, the one that got the least attention was the one that ought to matter most to us—Earth.
That changed when NASA created the Landsat program, a series of satellites that would perpetually orbit our planet, looking not out but down. Surveillance spacecraft had done that before, of course, but they paid attention only to military or tactical sites. Landsat was a notable exception, built not for spycraft but for public monitoring of how the human species was altering the surface of the plane... more »

My Take on Adobe’s Announcements Yesterday at the MAX Conference
Over on my blog today I did a Q&A about Adobe's new subscription-only plan for Photoshop and the Creative Cloud, and I hope I dispelled a lot of rumors and misinformation floating around out there. Here's the link: http://scottkelby.com/2013/my-take-on-adobes-announcements-yesterday-at-the-max-conference/
I also got the opportunity to take quite a public flogging over trying to answer a lot of questions people have out there. Ahh, another day in paradise. ;-)

Breathtaking Pictures Taken With a GoPro Camera
GoPro is the company that makes small, wearable, waterproof and shockproof cameras.
Founder Nick Woodman was inspired to start a company dedicated to adventure photography after a 2002 surfing trip to Australia. Hoping to capture incredible images, he soon discovered that high quality equipment could not be obtained for reasonable prices. So, he decided to start a company where everyday people could capture professional-like shots. Hence, the company's name "GoPro."
GoPro's cameras have now been used by the surfing community as well as by the skiing, bicycling, and skydiving communities. To show you just what this camera is capable, the company also just released an awesome 5-minute video. Warning: It's a heart-thumping, blood-pumping video that'll make you want to grab your bike, surfboard,... more »

Sebastiao Salgado – The Silent Drama Of Photography
“Economics PhD Sebastião Salgado only took up photography in his 30s, but the discipline became an obsession. His years-long projects beautifully capture the human side of a global story that all too often involves death, destruction or decay. Here, he tells a deeply personal story of the craft that nearly killed him, and shows breathtaking images from his latest work, Genesis, which documents the world’s forgotten people and places.”

Equivalence In Photography
Here's an essay I wrote for an upcoming exhibit.
Equivalence is an idea that has been discussed often in my family and among my father's colleagues. This was an interesting opportunity to explore it further - and to have a few more good conversations with my old man.
"The idea of equivalence in photography is richly rooted in a time when photography was beginning to discover its own nature and continues to be a powerful force for discovering our own nature, which is greater than we think.
Alfred Stieglitz first used the term equivalent as a title for a series of photographs of clouds, whose aspirations were more musical than representational, and to describe a particular kind of activity in art and its result, “My photographs are ever born of an inner need – an Experience of Spirit … I have a vision of life, and I try... more »

17 Quotes On Light
Here's a collection of my favorite quotes on light.
" Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography." - George Eastman
"Science is spectral analysis. Art is light synthesis." - Karl Kraus
"In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary." - Aaron Rose
"I find the light and work it, work it, work it." - Janice Dickinson
"Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep." - Le Corbusier
"The substance of painting is light." - Andre Derain
"What makes photography a strange invention is that its primary raw materials are light and time." - John Berger
