+Ricki Lake won the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host this year. Obviously because she was smart enough to feature @BlogHer on her show :)
Congrats Ricki.

Interesting to see the WSJ cover a local Bay Area preservation story. My stepsister Heather David is quoted as is an old friend Scott Guggenheim.

You GO, +Patton Oswalt
Long, windy essay, mostly about joke-stealing and heckling, but ending up with a change of heart about the existence of rape culture and the reaction to rape jokes.
Most moving excerpt:
"And just because I find rape disgusting, and have never had that impulse, doesn’t mean I can make a leap into the minds of women and dismiss how they feel day to day, moment to moment, in ways both blatant and subtle, from other men, and the way the media represents the world they live in, and from what they hear in songs, see in movies, and witness on stage in a comedy club."
Great read.

I just donated to this Indiegogo project from a fellow SJSU theatre department alumni :)
I'm not sure I believe indiegogo and Kickstarter are not meant for the big stars like Zach Braff and the Veronica Mars folks...but I do know they are meant for folks like my former classmate Kelly McAllister.

A poignant closing to +Jack Myers Media Business Report this morning (his predictions for 2013-2030). I hope he's right:
"On a very personal note, I'm hopeful that in two decades we will look back at the political polarization of the first two decades of this century as an especially dark and depressing time in American history, when forces tied to the past battled to prevent the inevitable advance of the economy, culture, basic human rights and a globally connected free society. The price will be steep -- environmental and infrastructure decay, social upheaval, political morass, economic struggles, the long-lasting impact of war, the overall health of society, the failures of educational systems, the role and value of organized religion, and the repression of a great generation that fundamentally wants to come together for the betterment of society. But ultimately, the connected ... more »

June 3rd is Blogging for LGBT Families Day.
I know it feels like this year has been all about momentum towards marriage equality. And there is momentum. But while we're celebrating Minnesota as the 12th state to approve marriage, let's also remember that it's only the 12th state to approve gay marriage.
And for that matter (and also for my friend +Denise Tanton ) I'll say that marriage isn't actually required to be a family.
So, here's to all the families, married or not, wanting to get married or not!

A Tale of Two Customer Service Experiences:
Warning: A bit of a rant.
I just had another great in-and-out-in-30-minutes Apple Store experience. You can't discount how the Apple Store experience has propagated Apple fandom beyond pure geeky circles.
When something goes wrong (as when my iPhone speakerphone just suddenly stopped working, in the middle of a long conference call) I don't panic; I don't freak out. I expect I'll be able to get it taken care of relatively painlessly.
My Apple Store customer service experiences just doesn't compare to the customer service I've gotten at most other places. It is still shocking to me when I make an appointment, am seen on time, and have my problem solved, usually at no cost to me, and usually in under an hour. This is just not typical out in the rest of the world.
Case in point: ... more »

Reading an advocacy guide from PETA and came across a paragraph that articulates really well one of the primary reasons I originally went #vegetarian and now #vegan. It's my personal choice, my personal economic vote, and something I have direct control and power over. All the other advocacy and voting and charitable giving and petition-signing etc. that I do in the world is still really one (or more) step(s) removed from effecting change. Eating is something we do every day. In fact, that we have to do every day. It's active advocacy. Active choice. It allows you to say, "If nothing else, I do this and make this change in the world."
I mostly post recipes and talk about great vegan food, because that's the biggest fear people have...that being vegan will suck. But the below excerpt really is at the heart of my own choices.
It took me 17 years (!) to... more »

Our latest keynote announcement for BlogHer '13.
+Majora Carter is someone I've been following and admiring for over 5 years now, so thrilled to host her at BlogHer. Lisa Donovan, +Brit Morin and Randi Zuckerberg are each fascinating makers & creators in different ways. But they all have one thing in common: I think they represent the kind of path more and more of will (and can) follow because of the freedoms and accessibility the Internet and technology provides.

Our +BlogHer community had a LOT to say about this article, so +Lisa Stone +Jory Des Jardins and I decided to weigh in with our perspective. We decided to think about the greater context of what happens at other events. And of how women who blog generally feel about coverage of our industry.
And we took a rather unusual tack for us. So, enjoy.

Meet the Pathfinders. For three years now Pathfinder Day has been a a focused, intense pre-conference experience at BlogHer's annual conference. It's a great way to center yourself and go into the main conference with your path more brightly illuminated and your goals more clearly understood. We'll announce the Pathfinder keynotes later this week.

On Monday morning, it took mere minutes before we made the call to shut down all of +BlogHer 's social sharing and publishing unrelated to the #BostonMarathon bombings. But I saw more debate about whether that's the obvious choice this time around than I had seen in the past. People seem to be overwhelmed with the the weight of what's going on in the world, and deciding how to adapt in the face of each new blow to our collective psyche.
I don't have a guideline or a rule of thumb about what "qualifies" as a sufficient tragedy to warrant action, but I can recommend this: Listen to your community. If their mental and emotional bandwidth is being completely consumed by real-time events, then step back and shut everything else down.
We offer a few more tips about what we do and why in this post.

The clever +Cheryl Contee had a brainstorm, I had an open laptop. Hence this new Tumblr: My New York Times Obituary.
After the brouhaha over rocket scientist Yvonne Brill's obit in the NY Times, we thought it would be convenient for the Times if we let them know ahead of time what we'd like to lead off our obits.
Make sure the NYT gets it right when they write your obit. If it's your "mean beef stroganoff", cool. But if it's, perhaps, something else? Here's your chance to let them know.

It was amazing spending the afternoon at the +Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research brainstorming with the dude himself, many members of his team, and lots of bright minds from the worlds of brand, marketing, social, CSR and more
The most interesting things was that for 3-4 hours this afternoon I did n't open my laptop, and checked my phone briefly during a break to make sure my dinner plans were still on. Other than that brief check-in, the focus was solely on the people in the room and the questions at hand. It made me realize how rare that is. And how valuable.
I need to figure out how to carve out more time like that into my days. It matters.
So, I probably should be talking about what we were there doing for the Foundation, and instead I'm talking about what it did for me. But isn't that always the way it ends up feeling when you're ... more »

+Michelle Magoffin has taken the grand leap into entrepreneurism, and her story is relatable to so many of you, I'm sure. I know I didn't ever think of myself as someone who wanted to start my own business.
I wanted to follow in my mom's footsteps and climb the corporate ladder.
Didn't work out that way.
Which suits me just fine :)

As always +david carr has some excellent turns of phrase in this article, most striking being:
"It was one of a number of on-the-nose statements she made from the witness stand. It is easy to forget that Ms. Stewart, who has aspects worthy of “Saturday Night Live,” altered the way that people live by decoupling class and taste."
Not a bad thing to be credited with, at the end of the day.

So you'd think, being the boss and all, I could get people into all our conferences whenever and however I want. But in reality, a lot of our conferences are capacity-constrained, and they're priced so low for attendees that we don't actually cover costs via attendee registration. And that means, bottom line, I don't get to give tickets out like candy.
I do, however, have a discount code for the upcoming BlogHer Entrepreneurs '13...our third time doing this super-focused and intense bootcamp for women with big ideas. Each attendee get a one-on-one mentoring session with a relevant woman leader, and we have some amazing investors, executives, entrepreneurs and other role models who have signed on happily to give back in this way.
The discount is 15%, and the code is: E13BlogHerandMe
