The gathering of the herd to pay last respects to the deceased elephant is a relatively common situation, as is the behaviour of the calf to stay by the mother's body. Just another example of the intelligence and compassion of these magnificent animals.
Perhaps one day all of us humans will realize what precious resources we have in our wild animals and leave them alone, hopefully before they are completely eliminated.

Yesterday i received a letter from my friend James Sindiyo, Chief Game Warden of the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya. He faced out, that the Masai Mara reserve has had one of the most stabile cheetah populations in Kenya with more than 60 individuals over the last decades, but now, they have an dramatically decline down to only 25 individuals. And in Masai Mara National reserve, no cheetah cub has survived over last two years.

The Serengeti is not only the animal and nature paradise of our dreams but fulfills an extremely important role in the effort to reconstruct the development history of human beings. The southern territory includes the Olduvai Gorge known as »The Cradle of Mankind«. Early humanoid bone fragments indicate that the region was of great significance to our evolution. It might hold the key to the secret of why the Serengeti has fascinated so many. Some psychologists even suspect that the images of the open, almost treeless savannas are still stored somewhere deep down in our subconscious.

Photography is a lifelong "learning by doing" process, although those super multi-function wonders of modern technology called digital cameras are busy making photographers increasingly lazy. In analog times, the cost of fi lm alone made it necessary for photographers to plan their camera settings in advance and to check them carefully during the shoot using a light meter or mathematical formulae. In these digital times, even we professionals tend to simply "shoot from the hip".
Technically speaking, this often results in a hit-rate of up to 90 percent, even in tricky lighting conditions. However, the very best photos are often amongst the remaining 10 percent.

The says CITES:
"Strategic decisions were adopted at CITES CoP16 for the first time about on-the-ground actions to collectively address the elephant poaching crisis and the escalating illegal trade in ivory. This represents an unprecedented united African front, setting aside divergences, to address this crisis."
This is my opinion:
"Deeply saddened that nothing was agreed at the CITES gathering to give protection to Africa's elephants and rhinos. The murder of so many elephants for their ivory and rhinos for their horn to make useless oriental medicines, must be brought to a close. The horrors just cannot go on - so much pain and suffering to innocent animals Then there are the lions disappearing from the wild at the rate of knots, for their body parts. How many elephants are dying? If the 38 tons of tusks seized in 2011 represented 10 percent of illegal ivory, it translates to something over 40,000 elephants killed annually — an elephant every 15 minutes!!!!
Policy affecting the conservation decisions at the CITES conference, this should not be.

Ethics in Wildlife Photography
Interesting article by long-time BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year judge Mark Carwardine. I subscribe to a full honest disclosure policy in nature photography.
I rarely if ever apply what can be construed as digital manipulation to my images. If I do, it's usually on the monochrome fine art type stuff for printing. Those images used for publication and natural history records I leave as shot - with processing optimisation like curves, sharpening etc applied of course. Whatever I do - I believe in disclosing that and coming clean.
I think all people who are passionate about the art and integrity of wildlife photography need to take ownership of what they do in processing manipulation (and also in-the-field manipulation like baited setups, tame and semi-tame animals etc).

Most lions in SA raised to be hunted
Most lions in South Africa are now canned. What a sad statement that is but also what a reality check for all of us who think South Africa has a “conservation formula” based on placing wildlife in private hands. In fact, the canned lion population (meaning those bred entirely for trophy hunting purposes) in South Africa now exceeds wild lion population numbers in any African nation except Tanzania ....
