Nicholas Kristof1,407,637The issue of the moment is Syria, so I'm delighted to host a Google+ hangout in which we'll be able to pose questions to Secretary of State John Kerry about Syria policy. I'll be joined by +Lara Setrakian, a journalist whom I've long admired who specializes in Syria. Andrew Beiter, a social studies  teacher and a regional education coordinator for the Holocaust Memorial Museum, will also be in the Hangout. Most of all, we'll be joined by all of you--so jump into the conversation on this page and leave us your questions. In particular, with this Hangout we want to involve teachers and students, so spread the word in the schools, please, and student questions are particularly welcome! This kind of online interview is something of an experiment, and we're still figuring out how to make it work best. So we also welcome your suggestions and guidance before and criticisms after. Syria: Weighing the U.S. Response2013-09-10 20:00:006975

Science on Google+579,687Posterside Hangouts is a new Hangouts On Air, which is hosted by the Science on Google+ Community (http://goo.gl/uhJCN). The main goal of this HOA series is to recreate a poster session-like atmosphere here on G+, so researchers can present their recent findings. Presentations will be grouped by discipline and individual presentations will last approximately 10 – 15 minutes. Do you have a recent conference presentation, manuscript, or book that you would like to share with the Google+ community? Do you want to give your undergraduate or graduate students practice presenting their research? Research examining interference effects shows that auditory input often interferes with processing of visual input in young children (i.e., auditory dominance effect), whereas visual input often interferes with auditory processing in adults (i.e., visual dominance effect). The current study used a cross-modal statistical learning task to examine modality dominance in adults. Participants ably learned auditory and visual statistics when auditory and visual sequences were presented unimodally and when auditory and visual sequences were correlated during training. However, increasing task demands resulted in an important asymmetry: Increased task demands attenuated visual statistical learning, while having no effect on auditory statistical learning. These findings are consistent with auditory dominance effects reported in young children and have important implications for our understanding of how sensory modalities interact while learning the structure of cross-modal information. Each segment will be released after the event as a stand-alone YouTube video on the AstrosphereVids channel, thus creating a library of content while raising money for future programs.  Planning for this Hangout-a-thon was triggered by the cuts created by sequestration, and by the current White House plans to transition education out of NASA. If the President's current budget is passed, all the funding programs CosmoQuest relies on for will be zeroed (see http://bit.ly/11m5XYg) and the project will be defunded. Rather than accept that fate, CosmoQuest is working to raise the funds needed to keep their programs going, to build new citizen science programs for researchers that don't otherwise have the means to accomplish their projects, and to contract, as they are able, extraordinary people laid off by these cuts at other institutions to keep doing great things through CosmoQuest. (Links to essays on these cuts are listed below).   CosmoQuest wants to make sure astronomy education survives and remains strong. While one team, and one telethon can't fix everything, they hope this event can raise awareness, while protected one small corner of astronomy research and education. #hangoutathon  The CosmoQuest 24 Hour Hangout-A-Thon - Main Event Page2013-06-15 18:00:00319

CosmoQuest42,704Join us this week as we talk with Jonathan Roberts about the Space App Hackathon and his winning entry from the New York region. I'll let Jon introduce himself in his own words: "I'm a postdoc physicist at NYU, researching the origin of cosmic rays. I used to make predictions for how we would find dark matter at the Large Hadron Collider when I was a postdoc over in Warsaw. I've been doing more and more data visualisation recently after getting frustrated with how hard it is to get a feeling for lots of science data. I went along to the NASA space apps challenge and was amazed by the number of people willing to put their time in to create tools to open up access to science results. I spent 36 hours coding with people I'd only just met, had a great time, and created a functioning tool that's useful for scientists and the public. I was pretty amazed. We created a site that aggregates data on what telescopes are looking at, and when they're looking. The site plots the observations on the sky so you can see not only where the telescope is looking, but click to find out more, and explore historical images of the target - whether it's a distant galaxy or a supernova remnant in our own Milky Way. You can filter by date, or by target, and you can export the data as plain text - making it useful for scientists as well as the public. And there's a twitter account that will tweet to you when telescopes turn to look at new targets, so you can get tweets from space! Oh, and I also draw maps professionally..." #LearningSpace  Learning Space - Apps for Space!2013-05-02 01:00:0095

The Planetary Society5,061,250The Curiosity rover hit an unexpected snag last week and had to switch over to a backup computer. It's coming out of "Safe Mode" operations later this week, but JPL engineers are still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. We'll talk to +Emily Lakdawalla who's been following the story, about what happened, what it means for Curiosity, and how the team proceeds from here. There is also the small matter of a massive solar storm headed for Mars, which will make Curiosity hunker down for a few days, too. We will also speak to Planetary Radio host +Mat Kaplan before he flies down to Chile for the opening of the new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope. He's been making an audio diary of his trip, and he'll give us the latest on this gorgeous new telescope array that will unlock new secrets of the universe. Finally, we check in with the recent issues regarding NASA's budget, particular for Planetary Science. Sequestration is upon the U.S. government, and the House of Representatives just proposed a new budget to fund the government for the remainder of 2013. We'll talk about where we stand and how this uncertainty is effecting NASA's Planetary Science program. If you can't make the live broadcast, you can submit your questions in advance in the comment thread to this post.Planetary Society Hangout: What's Going On With Curiosity and a NASA Budget Update2013-03-07 21:00:0058

NASA2,314,876Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008338

The Planetary Society5,061,250This week we will be talking about the effects of the impending Sequester, the across-the-board cuts to almost all federal programs, on NASA and the U.S. Space Program. The Sequester is scheduled to begin on March 1st, 2013, unless Congress acts to replace it with targeted cuts and/or revenue of equal value. Joining me is a very special guest from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Jon Morse. Dr. Morse previously served as the Director of NASA's Astrophysics Division in Washington, D.C., and was a Senior Policy Analyst for the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). He currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Research for Physical Sciences & Engineering at RPI. Dr. Morse will bring a wealth of experience on how last minute budget cuts can effect the direction and capability within NASA, how a division makes decisions to prioritize programs, and what it's like to work for NASA headquarters. As always, we will be taking your questions on our Google+ event page, Twitter via the hashtag #planetarylive, or on the YouTube comments thread for the video. Please feel free to submit a question in advance if you cannot watch live.Planetary Society Hangout: Sequestration at NASA with Jon Morse2013-02-21 21:00:00150

NASA2,314,876Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.   As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future.   President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible.   At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight. During the event, we'll be joined by: - Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall. - Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks. - John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope. - Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. KQED SCIENCE356,170@100526514195087244555 is hosting a Hangout On Air round table discussion about the proposed expansion of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. While the area will increase by just 1%, it isn't just any small patch of ocean water. It's the busiest, most high-profile section of Northern California's coast, a highway for oil tankers and fishing boats, a recreational haven and a backdrop for millions of photographs -- the waters directly west of the Golden Gate Bridge. "People assume that the water around the Golden Gate is protected. It's not," said Maria Brown, superintendent of the adjacent Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. "That area is of unparalleled beauty. It is an iconic area." But expanding the sanctuary could affect everything from firework shows to whether people can ride Jetskis off the Marin Headlands. We'll touch on all of these issues in our discussion. *Learn more here:* http://goo.gl/1JvnY You'll be able to watch the Hangout On Air here on our Event page. Fraser Cain953,336Join us every Sunday night for another @100902337165997768522, where we stream the view from several telescopes into a live Google+ Hangout on Air. We'll stream whatever's in the sky right now. We'll answer questions, take requests, and generally geek out about astronomy. What's on the agenda this week?  - The @101461771579697778955 is perfect so we'll probably have several views of it - The planets are too low on the horizon, so no luck there - somebody might be able to get @106397393735580644683, though. - The summer constellations are fading, and now the fall constellations are coming up. We should be able to see both, including the Eagle Nebula, Swan Nebula, Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, Ring Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, and more. - If we're lucky, we'll also get a view from the other side of the planet, showcasing a live view of the @116479286515493152582 and its current sunspots. (the image for this week's Event is the Eagle Nebula, captured by @107852824321756704184, and a good example of the kind of stuff we'll see) You don't need any special technology to enjoy our star parties. Just join this event, and then you'll get a notification when we go live. Then you'll be able to ask us questions, request objects, and generally learn about astronomy and astrophotography as a hobby. See you on Sunday!Virtual Star Party - August 26, 20122012-08-27 05:30:00121

Peter Vogel44,635My circle of educators who post about information technology from an education perspectiveSomeone asked me earlier today if they could have access to this circle of about 450 educators. For some reason a private sharing didn't work for him so I am sharing the circle publicly. Perhaps it will be of use to some others as well. The circle isn't perfect. There are sure to be some dormant accounts in it but that should be more than made up by the many devoted G-plussers you will find here.2014-11-14 04:49:174553311

Peter Vogel44,233Sharing a circle of terrific ICT educatorsHere in British Columbia we are about to head back to school. What better time to share this circle of people who share their expertise in Information and Communications Technology or Educational Technology if you prefer another label.I've been a Google+ user since day 1 and in fact I began using it, appropriately enough, while on a three-week stay at the birthplace of the World Wide Web, CERN, perhaps better known as the home of the Large Hadron Collider. I began building this circle of plussers while there. Now I must admit I haven't been good about culling dormant accounts of late so don't expect everyone in the circle to be a gem. Also, if you happen across this post and circle and wish to be included (on the basis outlined above) just send me a note.  2014-08-29 22:11:48451101

Taking them a while, but they're getting finally closer to understanding the fabric of space-time through stellar mass black hole EPR=ER analogy to the Planck scale

The idea goes like this... Space-time is comprised of entanglement. You get this entanglement from entangled virtual micro black holes. As the mechanism of these virtual fluctuations cycles, virtual wormhole bridges are created between entangled virtual micro black holes. The idea goes like this... Space-time is comprised of entanglement. You get this entanglement from entangled virtual micro black holes. These virtual micro black holes are constantly forming and evaporating into virtual Hawking radiation faster than can be observed in accordance with fundamental Uncertainty Principle.

As the mechanism of these virtual fluctuations cycles, virtual wormhole bridges are created between entangled virtual micro black holes. This is all occurring at scales and times beyond the limits of observation (more accurately, the mechanism of observation itself emerges from this). The entanglement between virtual micro black holes gives rise to virtual Einstein-Rose bridges. We observe these bridges through space-time as EPR spooky action at a distance (EPR=ER) existing between entangled particles upon observation of wave function collapse. But the key here is that it is the emerged mechanism of observation (the distinction between virtual and non-virtual) that transforms the entanglement state into observable non-locality (EPR).

Each non-virtual rest-mass particle is a standing 2sphere wave of entanglement with no interior virtualization fluctuations (a meaningless void of true nothingness). These are flat objects sitting on closed & holographically curved surfaces. It is the very distinction between the virtual and non-virtual where the existence of the rest-mass emerges. As a rest-mass particle traverses space-time with momentum, it's virutal/non-virtual distinction is remade, continually interacting with the fluctuations in the virtual realm across a boundary (itself curving through space-time) comprised of entanglement.

If you have an array of entangled pairs aligned about a fully entropic black hole event horizon, the interior of this volume will have zero length. This is like having a 2sphere with a radius of zero, in a sense. It has a theoretical radius in accordance with the presumed mass / entropy held on the surface area of the event horizon. This is therefore a holographic volume because the entanglement existing between the pairs cause information/energy changes to traverse the interior with zero length. It is this entanglement about the surface from which the hologram emerges (that there is an interior volume inside the closed 2d curved surface).

In a sense, every rest-mass particle is comprised of an aggregate of continually forming & evaporating & entangled virtual micro black hole (from the Dirac sea) between which virtual Einstein-Rosen bridges also form. The momentum of every rest-mass particle is it's continual interaction with the virtual bed in which the rest-mass particle exists, and so it curves along the space-time of the virtual Dirac sea.

You are to imagine two entangled virtual micro black hole that evaporate into virtual Hawking radiation all of which is never observed.  This would form an Einstein-rosen bridge or wormhole, meaning information wise, the interior or volume has zero length. The act of observation is a fundamental mechanism of information exchange wholly dependent on scales of length & time. In this sense, all photons (having no rest-mass) are virtual as they are only ever observed once (when they die). They experience no time as scattering is a cascade of new photons. Their lives are all virtual zero time (like zero length). It is only from our limited perspective that perceives time passing for a photon, it does not. This is pure information exchange (a massless boson) through space-time where time is zero (not unlike EPR). The only non-virtual or observable (from our perspective) persistence is a particle with rest-mass.

Tensor networks provide a mathematical tool capable of doing just that. In this view, space-time arises out of a series of interlinked nodes in a complex network, with individual morsels of quantum information fitted together like Legos. Entanglement is the glue that holds the network together. If we want to understand space-time, we must first think geometrically about entanglement, since that is how information is encoded between the immense number of interacting nodes in the system.

The short answer is that we don’t know. But many physicists, writes +Jennifer Ouellette in “How Quantum Pairs Stitch Space-Time,” have long “suspected a deep connection between quantum entanglement — the ‘spooky action at a distance’ that so vexed Albert Einstein — and space-time geometry at the smallest scales.” How might entanglement stitch together the structured fabric of space-time? One compelling recent idea, writes K.C. Cole in “Wormholes Untangle a Black Hole Paradox,” suggests that quantum entanglement “could be creating the ‘spatial connectivity’ that ‘sews space together,’ according to Leonard Susskind, a physicist at Stanford University and one of the idea’s main architects.” This idea, though still in its infancy, would solve the troublesome black hole firewall paradox and, enticingly, could help explain quantum gravity.

I have proposed this idea many times (see #VMBH ), even going so far as to claim it solves the double slit experiment:

Holographic principle holds in flat space-time

A new proof shows that a holographic reality (a lower dimensional background plate) is consistent with what we know of what we perceive as physical reality. A flat space-time can be holographic. It does not disprove that reality is not holographic, but it shows it CAN be.

Therefore, Brian Koberlein's previous bullshit disproof falls... flat.
http://www.universetoday.com/107172/why-our-universe-is-not-a-hologram/

Brian has no basis to claim any proof shows the universe is not potentially holographic. It cannot be ruled out.

Being able to categorize YouTube comments (that become G+ posts) into collections is another added benefit of the ability to tag posts by subject with the new functionality.

Eg.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/+JonathanLangdale/posts/iyFh2qHpLbH

It is for this reason that I've been trying to argue that comments need to be elevated to the level of a post for categorization (especially if you want to be more like Twitter & real-time). When people make comments by subject, they should be listed in collections that can be subscribed to (and presumably put into circles).

I doubt Google will be smart enough to implement this anytime soon.

If massive (stellar) black holes never fully form, if they bounce, then our perception may be a near frozen collapse. As this collapse occurs & approaches the formation of an event horizon, it gets sent further and further into the future (relative to us), in a sense.

There is a complementarity here. The colder this Hawking temperature is relative to the cosmic micro-wave background radiation, such that you cannot see it until the CMB is colder, then the farther into the future a black hole's full evaporation must be because the black hole needs to be larger to have such a cold Hawking temperature.

As a smaller black hole evaporates more quickly (assuming you could make a small one using a non-stellar collapse mechanic), approaching full evaporation, then the hotter it will be (such that it can now be seen).

If massive (stellar) black holes never fully form, if they bounce, then our perception may be a near frozen collapse. As this collapse occurs & approaches the formation of an event horizon, it gets sent further and further into the future (relative to us), in a sense.

It's therefore fundamentally not possible to directly measure the Hawking temperature of a very massive black hole without waiting. This entire relationship & mechanism appears to be a precise collarily with the virtual Planck realm, the vacuum, the quantum foam suggesting that it's comprised of many extremely highly fluctuating virtual micro black holes & virtual Hawking radiation.

For a particle to have rest-mass and be observable, it must have a temperature relative to the Planck realm that is much "colder" in a sense. I imagine two tennis balls bouncing directly off each other in a box with near perfect elasticity & very nearly zero friction. What happens if these tennis balls are then collided with very near the point where they bounce off each other? This is how I imagine rest-mass is liberated from the vacuum during the conversion of energy to mass, and how rest-mass curves through a vacuum.

Therefore, as a black hole evaporates down to a point, it (and all of it's evaporation products) must naturally return to the virtual sea from which it originally came, for it is defined by the very distinction been the virtual ("empty" space) and non-virtual (rest-mass w/momentum).

It seems to be the case that the information for a volume is best contained on it's surface area, when in the configuration of a black hole, because it's very existence is defined by the distinction between the virtual and non-virtual, the border. Therefore, it must be the case that unless an electron has an interior, it is a black hole as well (continually feeding & evaporating).

We take this (information) border for granted because we only perceive classic aggregate mechanics.  Yet, for every particle of rest-mass, this border would seem to be constantly falling into the void & forming as rest-mass is engaged with momentum across the Dirac sea.

Now consider a black hole evaporating. Now consider an evaporating black hole with momentum. It's momentum must necessarily be defined by the evaporation only because the information it carries sits on the surface area of the event horizon. This evaporation is a continual distinction between the virtual and non-virtual existence of the black hole, at the event horizon. In a sense, it might be said that any rest-mass with momentum is continually evaporating and reforming across space-time (as opposed to a singular particle moving through a void). If this is the case, then it might true to say that it's impossible for anything ever be in any a non-evaporative state of some kind, such that entropy is always increasing.

So you can only have one post in a collection, then if you try to add it to a second collection, it becomes a new re-share.

I am dying to use Google+ almost exclusively to note information I find interesting throughout the day, but it's currently way too frustrating how badly implemented this stuff is.

The implementation of collections is encouraging though (albeit way late). At least they can be typed into the field. There are many things that need to be improved and changed however.

I really wish I had control over Google+ development. This is frustrating.

All I want to do is unfollow everything and be able to add groups of collections to circles of my own creation. And it would be great if I could add a post to multiple collections simply by adding #tags.

As it stands, it seems that the best thing to do is make your current G+ profile in-active as an archive of older posts simply for search, then start a new profile for actual browsing of content by topic.

If only Google let you subscribe to collections by putting/grouping them into circles (which would be nearly one in the same thing as collections)... ?

Why would I want to go through all my old posts tagged with MH370 to add them to a new collection when they're already tagged via search?

It would be easier if we could customize the collection to auto include posts we've tagged going backwards & forwards in time.

I also have to be in the collection to have post in collection, or move it after posting it.

It would be easier/simpler if auto or manual +tagging put a posts in dynamic collections.

But at least we have the move functionality for older posts, as much of a hassle as that is.

I could be totally wrong, but from what I can tell... Google still doesn't know what they're doing with this stuff.

So everyone is going to create new collections that everyone will be defaulted to follow?

Medium, Twitter or Google+

Google+ still makes creating posts a pain in the ass, and a less than enjoyable experience (long form web), other than for Android sharing. I do not yet see the new collection functionality enabled for me, but even with what I've seen how it's going to work, don't see going back to using Google+ as much I have in the past even with collections. Of course, that could potentially change. And for the web, it still feels like a lot of bloat with bad user-experience.

If Google wants to hire me to tell them how to do this stuff properly, I'd consider it. I still think Google is wasting a huge opportunity w/G+ to be more innovative, especially in terms of real-time type comments & posts.

Google can either buy Twitter or out-do them. Following the pack & implementing half-ass user-exerience long after another site seems like bad form. By now, G+ should be well beyond where both Medium & Twitter currently are. It makes no sense why Google doesn't want real-time & why they want G+/YT comments to just sit there doing nothing simply because they're afraid of the confusion generated by Google Wave.

Collections > Communities

Will communities last?

I called this a long time ago. Posts dynamically put into Collections should have been implemented a long time ago, as I had continually suggested.

Communities are not worth the effort because it gives the reader no control to tailor which posts they see without blocks, not to mention the time wasted on all the moderation of spam/trolls, & re-inventing a BBS/forum.

A little late, why didn't Google listen to us before?

Long time coming. It's interesting that they've taken the same name as Medium.

However, this could have been done a long time ago to make the collection topic the same thing as a circle, so you could circle only a subset of a person by topic instead of the whole person.  It could still be integrated with Circles, and it should... but it won't.

Also, the auto-tagging should automatically group posts into dynamic collections.

Introducing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic

Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions. So we set out to give people a place to express the things they love. Today, we’re announcing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic.

Every collection is a focused set of posts on a particular topic, providing an easy way for you to organize all the things you’re into. Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections.

Posts in collections you follow will appear in your Home stream, with a link to easily jump right into the collection so you can get to similar content from that author. Collections give you a great way to find more of the stuff you love from the people you follow.

Collections is available on Android and the web, and iOS is coming later. For Android users, make sure to update your Google+ app to get access to Collections.

For inspiration on interesting topics, check out our Featured Collections page here: g.co/collections

"You're not disciplined enough to be violent."

A senior at a Baltmore high school liked a prior video on day of Mall riot. This is the kind of stuff that makes law enforcement heads explode regarding domestic "terrorists."

And it's the type of stuff that appears to spark riot police to show up when local high schools let out across malls, after having shut down public transit.

This is how you get real Boston Tea Parties, where instead of destroying tea, people are destroying cop cars because they're pissed that they're unfairly sentenced to lengthy death sentences on prison ships by the British.

Everyone saying Google shouldn't acquire Twitter are morons. Buying Twitter is the smartest thing Google could ever do. The only question is whether Google would fuck it up or not. I have to think It would be hard, yet not impossible, to fuck up something like Twitter.

Google buying Twitter would likely [inevitably] kill Facebook & turn it into what MySpace is.

Yet, I wonder how important national security folks are in such a deal.

It is amazing how the traditional science celebrities are so closed minded. We don't really know the mechanics of the virtual realm fully. This domain is inherently unobservable directly. We don't know it's limits, or whether energy/momentum is conserved via virtual mechanics that only appear to break conservation to us.
