Sunrise & Lions at the Waterhole

When on safari I've always liked being at a waterhole for sunrise and sunset. The light is good and there is often little wind so reflections are clear. The animals are also more active at these times than during the heat of the midday sun. They are drawn to the waterholes to drink, bathe or even coat themselves in mud as a natural sunscreen against the hot day ahead.

When we arrived at this particular waterhole early one morning we were initially disappointed there were no animals lining the water's edge. The reason for this quickly became clear however as soon as we saw the pride of lions lounging around on the far bank (visible in the centre left of this photo). We ended up staying with them for almost two hours watching them as they rested, drank, climbed trees and played in what proved to be a wonderful sighting.

Doline #2, Hang Son Doong (World's Biggest Cave)

This photo shows some members of our party beginning the climb up one of the two collapsed cave roof sections or "dolines" that are prominent features in Hang Son Doong. The vegetation that can be seen is still inside the cave, with the real jungle floor some 150 metres further above what is visible here.

I'm happy to say that this photo has made it to the top of today's "Daily Dozen" At National Geographic's YourShot website http://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/daily-dozen/2014-05-27/

Camp One, Son Doong Cave

This shows the location of our camp for two of the nights we spent in Son Doong. My tent is the one closest to the camera. Not a bad spot at all, I had a great view out onto the first doline which is just out of shot to the right. You can see a thin line of smoke rising from our campfire but most of the cloud you see is natural, caused by the difference in temperature and humidity between the cave and the jungle above.

Son Doong Cave, Vietnam

I recently was fortunate enough to go on a week long adventure to see the world's largest cave, Hang Son Doong in central Vietnam. The cave is of course enormous, but it is also stunningly beautiful. Two sections of the cave roof have collapsed, bring the jungle down into the cave and letting in a lot of natural light that creates an incredible atmosphere. This photo is looking out towards the first of the two collapsed sections (or dolines). The mist you can see here was very dynamic and in the space of a couple of minutes could go from impenetrable to clear and back again.

Golden Monkey

Golden monkeys live in the highland forests of the volcanic mountains that join Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. Due to habitat loss and wars in the region they're now classified as endangered. There's some hope for them however because, much like the nearby mountain gorillas, they bring much needed income to the area through surprisingly well regulated and responsible tourism.

From a photography point of view they make wonderful but challenging subjects - they don't sit still for long that's for sure! This guy was the alpha male making his way through the bamboo canopy.

Swan Lake

These swans in Northern Finland were holed up on this small patch of open water for the winter. This stretch had avoided freezing because there was something of a current running across the shallow rocky water; everything else for miles was frozen solid. It doesn't look it but the temperature when this photo was taken was around -29°C (-20°F).

Trivia: I was just wondering what the collective noun for swans is. According to Wikipedia there are lots of possibilities: bank, bevy, drift, eyrar, flight, game, herd, lamentation, sownder, team, wedge and whiting. Who comes up with all these anyway?!

Nile Juveniles

Recently some friends and I spent a couple of weeks in East Africa, during which we stayed a couple of nights on the banks of the River Nile near Jinja, Uganda. One evening I got chatting to a local boatman who offered to take us for a short trip on the river before darkness set in. After negotiating a price (and stocking up with a few drinks for sundowners!) we set out.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much we saw in such a short time. Local fishermen packing up their boats and nets for the day, people washing themselves, their clothes, or even their motorbikes in the river, young children waving frantically to us with big smiles on their faces. There were a few small huts dotted along the banks that were actually restaurants serving fresh fish. All the while we were surrounded with beautiful rugged scenery.

On top of that the bird life far exceeded my expectations. Some of the trees provided roosting sites for hundreds of cormorants, egrets, storks and darters. Various kingfisher and heron species were in abundance too. New for me was seeing a pair of adult African fish eagles with their two juveniles on a small rocky island. Unfortunately the two adults flew off before we got anywhere near them. The children however were a little more obliging!

Many of you are no doubt already aware of Comet ISON, a.k.a "The Comet of the Century" that is on course to graze past the sun today. No one knows whether the icy comet will survive its brush with the sun or not but if it does we could be in for a real visual treat in the days and weeks ahead. There's a decent chance that the comet will emerge from its close encounter with a spectacular tail, easily visible to the naked eye in the next week or so for those in the Northern hemisphere.

This webpage has some fantastic (and quite staggering) live data about the comet's journey: http://www.cometison2013.co.uk/perihelion-and-distance/  In particular take a look at the comet's current speed as it accelerates in towards its close encounter with the sun. At its peak in a few hours from now it will reach a top speed of 845,000mph!

Kittiwakes are often seen in huge numbers in front of glaciers. This is because the combination of fresh water and currents bring lots of marine life such as fish and krill to the surface where they become easy prey.

This photo shows hundreds of kittiwakes erupting into the air after they were disturbed by ice calving off the glacier wall.

Collision Course!

This puffin was coming in to land at its burrow with a mouthful of food to feed its chick, only to be ambushed by a black-headed gull at the very last second. The ensuing chaos saw the puffin lose about half of its catch to the gull before scrambling to safety underground. It could have been worse, it wasn't uncommon to see a poor puffin lose an entire mouthful.

Taken at the Farne Islands, June 2013.

Midair Mouthful

Here's a fun photo to start the week - a pelican catching a thrown fish while still flying. I was surprised at how agile these birds can be in the air given their enormous size. Note I said agile, not elegant! :)

Taken out on the estuary at Walvis Bay, Namibia.

Lake Inari and the Northern Lights
I recently spent a few days in the far north of Finland in the hope of seeing the northern lights. Fortunately the conditions came together perfectly on my last night there and I was treated to an incredible light show that far exceeded my expectations. A solar flare hit Earth that night, creating an unusually strong aurora that danced and flickered across the sky like crazy.

This photo was taken in the tiny town of Nellim, located close to the border with Russia and Norway. Unbelievably I didn't see a single other person the whole night. I guess perhaps the locals take nights like this a little more for granted than I did!

Vervet Monkey Mother and Baby - Tough Love?
Mum had finished eating the fruit so it seemed only fair that the baby should have a chance to finish the leftover core. Mum obviously thought otherwise - a split-second after I took this shot mum dropped the remains down into thick bush, never to be seen again! Seemed like the baby was going to have to work for its dinner after all.

The crowned crane is the national bird of Uganda and appears on both their national flag and coat of arms. They're spectacular to see, especially when in flight. This one is just coming in for a rather awkward (but nevertheless successful) landing!

Aurora Borealis over Lake Inari, Finland

I'm just back from a few days in the very north of Finland where I was attempting to chase the Northern Lights. The first few days were heavily overcast and raining, with the forecast saying there was more to come so I'd basically resigned myself to the trip being a write-off. Fortunately I managed to track down some clear skies on my last night (Tuesday just gone), and even more fortunately a solar flare caused a geomagnetic storm to hit that night too. The result were strong aurora that put on a spectacular show throughout the night. In a word - wow!

I'll have more photos once I find time to do some processing, in the meantime here's one that caught my eye.

Think he looks cute and cuddly? Think again! The leopard seal has a mouth full of jagged teeth and is one of the Antarctic's top predators, second only to the killer whale. They predominantly eat penguins but also prey on fish, krill, seabirds and even other seal species. They are also known to have a fondness for attacking inflatable boats!

Mufasa in the Mist

This is Mufasa, the dominant male lion at Thanda Game Reserve. This particular morning we could hear him roaring out in front of us, somewhere in the thick mist. We sat with the engine off and soon his outline became visible as he continued roaring and walking directly towards our vehicle. He continued closer, eventually passing by so close that I could have easily reached out and touched him. What a way to start the day!

Southern Rockhopper Penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome)

These two rockhoppers had just emerged from the ocean after returning from a fishing trip. They still have quite a journey ahead of them; to get back to their nests they need to waddle up the beach and then climb and hop their way up a long and steep rocky incline. The often comical hopping action is how they get their name.

These penguins have declined in numbers by about 30% in the last 30 years. They are threatened by oil spills and commercial fishing. They are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN.

Pied Kingfishers fighting

This was a bit of a lucky shot. I was tracking a pied kingfisher who was fishing along the shoreline of Lake Malawi. If you've ever seen these guys in action before you'll know that they tend to hover in one spot for a bit and if they see a fish they'll dive down to try and catch it. Everything happens quite quickly and it's hard to get very close, which makes them challenging but fun subjects.

The one I was tracking must have encroached on another one's territory (or vice-versa) and there was a flurry of activity for a split second before they went their merry ways. I instinctively fired off a burst of 3-4 shots but it wasn't until I reviewed them on my camera that I even realised exactly what had happened!

In celebration of the new #PolarThursday theme, here's a recent shot of an iceberg dotted with black-legged kittiwakes. This was taken in Bråsvellbreen, Svalbard, during a Zodiac cruise through ice that had broken off from a massive ice wall. I must say that icebergs are simply amazing to see. It's almost as if their sizes, shapes and colours are specifically designed to be as awe-inspiring as possible.

On a completely different note, this afternoon I am going to go flying in a vintage de Havilland Tiger Moth! I'm quite excited and a bit nervous at the same time since I'm not sure what to expect really. Hopefully there won't be any sign of the Red Baron.

Lions at Sunrise
A few weeks ago I shared a photo of a waterhole at sunrise, with some lions sitting in the background (https://plus.google.com/104380036950579300637/posts/5EQBxgV6jB8). Shortly after that photo was taken we drove around the waterhole to get a closer look at the lions. Fortunately at the same time the sun decided to break through the clouds and present us with this scene. The bright "cloud" between the rightmost lions is from their breath in the cool morning air.

Sunrise in Sapa, Vietnam
We arrived into Sapa at about 4:30am by a very uncomfortable overnight bus and were unceremoniously dumped on the outskirts of town in cold, thick fog. the fog was so thick that I needed to use my GPS to even figure out which way the town actually was! Fortunately the centre was only a couple of hundred metres away and the next hour or so was spent trying to find a guesthouse that was open and still had a room available.

The place we finally found turned out to be great. The staff were extremely helpful and the views over the valley were stunning. This photo was taken from the breakfast table! What fascinated me was that the cloud rolled in and out in about a 5 minute cycle. At its peak it wasn't possible to see anything at all but then moments later the cloud would pour away down the valley like water draining from a sink, leaving behind a view like this.... more »

Polar Bear

One of the most amazing sightings we had in Svalbard was also one of the most unexpected. We had just returned to the ship after having spent a couple of hours in Zodiacs when this large bear appeared out of nowhere and swam over to investigate us. He swam alongside, the ship making eye-contact with everyone watching, then lost interest and continued on his way.

Polar bears are classified as vulnerable. They are finding survival increasingly difficult as the pack ice retreats further and faster every year, taking their main food source (seals) along with it. Many bears now end up stranded on land over the summer where they sometimes starve because food is in such short supply.

Arctic Fox Cub Emerging from Den

This cute little chap was one of three young Arctic fox cubs that we encountered on our very last landing of a two-week long trip around Spitzbergen. The parents were presumably off hunting and the other two cubs spent the entire time asleep on the grass. This one however made up for the rest of the family and entertained us by scurrying around, chewing on various leftovers around the den, and occasionally trying to wake up one of his siblings to play.

During the previous two weeks we'd only seen one other fox in the distance so this was a great bonus to end the trip with.

"Hey, guys, is that who I think it is?!"

After a couple of trips away and various other diversions, I've somehow managed to find that over three months have gone wizzing by since I last posted a photo or took the time to catch up with the many friends I've made on here. It's time to change that!

These lovely lion cubs at Thanda Game Reserve are the same ones from a photo I posted in May (https://plus.google.com/u/0/104380036950579300637/posts/X8Pmq5V59FR). It was fantastic to see them again. As you can see they're a lot bigger now, but still just as playful and in the very best of health!

[edit: I must say there have been a lot of changes on G+ since I was last here! I'm still struggling to find my way around and so far I'm not sure all the changes are improvements. I guess I'll get used to it soon enough though...]

Northern Lights and the Milky Way

BEST VIEWED LARGE (view it then press "space"). Even better is if you can view it at 100% (2048x464) because that way you get to see much more detail in all the stars, including the trails of some satellites passing overhead.

This was taken out on a frozen lake in the north of Finland at about 11pm. The panorama consists of 13 separate photos stitched together to create a final image that is around 54 megapixels in size.

Elephants in Ngorongoro Crater

Every morning at about the same time these elephants make the journey from where they spend the night up on the crater wall down to a waterhole on the crater floor. They were still some distance away when I took this but our guide knew exactly where they'd cross the road. As a result they ended up passing within just a few metres of us.

Iceberg Graveyard, Pleneau Island, Antarctica

BEST VIEWED LARGE!

This was just one of dozens of icebergs that get trapped and run aground by the currents near Pleneau Island, Antarctica. They remain here until they melt - a process that can take many years.

Have a look through the arch at the Zodiac to give you some idea of the scale - there are 11 people in that boat. Then remember that up to 90% of the iceberg is under water!

The Treasury. Petra, Jordan

The first sight that visitors see after walking through the 1.5km "Siq" (narrow gorge) at the main entrance to Petra is Al Khazneh, commonly known as The Treasury. Seeing the iconic structure suddenly appear after rounding the last bend in the Siq is a sight that stops many visitors in their tracks, myself included!

The Treasury was thought to have been build around the 1st century AD. It is carved out of solid sandstone and is over 40 meters high. Despite it's name however it is thought to have been a royal tomb rather than a treasury. The name "Treasury" originated from a legend that said pirates or bandits had hidden their treasure inside the urn carved into the top of the façade. As a result of the legend, local Bedouins tried to retrieve the treasure by shooting the urn, damaging it significantly in the process. In reality the urn is carved from solid rock.

Petra by Night

Three nights a week the path through the Siq and the open area in front of the Treasury is lit by around 1,800 candles and it is possible to visit for a couple of hours while local musicians play for the crowd. I wouldn't actually recommend it if you're going just for the experience alone. The show they put on is rather short, the atmosphere is spoiled somewhat by the large numbers of tourists present, many of whom disregard the requests for silence. I also think it is rather overpriced. If you like photography, however, Petra by Night is fantastic!

For photos, my advice would be to go in early so you have time to set up your tripod and figure out the best camera settings to use (the light is tricky to say the least). Try to take some photos from the Siq entrance too before everyone starts leaving, and once people do start to pile out en masse, move back into the forecourt area and take shots of the candles, façade and so on until they kick you out! At that point you should be able to walk out the Siq having the whole thing to yourself and get some more great shots along the way.

It seems the news for rhinos just keeps getting worse as they are targeted by poachers in ever increasing numbers. A good friend of mine Sam is trying hard to do something about this however. He is raising money for Save The Rhinos by running the London marathon. The catch? He'll be wearing a full-body rhino suit for the entire race! Madness I say...

If you want to see what the suit is like, Sam made this little promotional video which I think is absolutely brilliant. Please do check it out, I think you'll enjoy it too: Run Rhino Run

Of course if you do feel willing to sponsor Sam he would very much appreciate anything you can give, however small. You can do so here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SamuelBond

If you aren't able to sponsor then sharing this post or the video would help too (yes, Facebook or Twitter also count! On Twitter he's @MagpieTravels). So far he is still quite a long way short of his target with just over two weeks to go which I think is a shame given the cause and how much effort he is putting in. Thank you!

===================
UPDATE:
Sam finished the marathon in an official time of 05:44:47. He's pretty happy with that considering the costume he was wearing! He is also very pleased that he has managed to reach his sponsorship target, which is of course good news for the real rhinos out there. Thanks so much to everyone who helped with sharing his video and with sponsorship, I know how much he has appreciated it and hopefully it can make a real difference.

Giant's Castle, Drakensberg, South Africa

I've just seen +Morkel Erasmus's post for today's Vast Vistas  #AfricanTuesday  theme (https://plus.google.com/115370996311184482015/posts/LsUZX9m8WUb). I recognised the location immediately since I was lucky enough to spend a day there last September. Here's a photo of mine from almost the same location.

While Zodiac cruising at our very last stop on South Georgia we saw our first Weddell seal lying on a rocky beach. We approached slowly, but to my dismay the seal took one look at us then quickly slipped into the water and disappeared. You can imagine our surprise when a few seconds later it surfaced right next to us and proceeded to swim a couple of laps around the boat, clearly curious about the strange "creature" that had entered its domain.

Gentoo Penguin

Watching penguins on the land is often hilarious because they look so clumsy and comical. Watching them in the water is fascinating too though - they're so fast and agile it is as though they have transformed into a whole different species. I like to think this photo of a penguin jumping for a breath of air captures a bit of both sides of their two polarised personalities.

This was taken from a boat just off the southeast coast of South Georgia as several Gentoos swam alongside.

Hello! After a month overlanding from Johannesburg up to Nairobi followed by a week in the north of Finland, I'm now back home and finally have some time to catch up a bit with my photos and also of course with you all on Google+.

I thought I'd start by posting a photo of one of my favourite animals - a chameleon. I found this little guy asleep at the tip of a branch one evening in a campsite in Botswana. Knowing that he would stay there all night, I went back first thing the next morning and sure enough he was just getting moving on his morning adventures. This photo was taken as he climbed his way back up towards the trunk of the tree, presumably in search of some tasty insects for breakfast.

Puerto Natales Waterfront at Sunset

Note the funky lenticular clouds to the top right. These are formed when cool moist air flows over mountains, causing standing waves to form on the downwind side which condense into clouds at their crests.

In this case the mountains were those of Torres del Paine, visible in the background on the left. They're the same mountains as in my previous photo, only this time around I was happy to have the wind back because without it these clouds wouldn't have appeared.

Single exposure with minimal processing, shot using an ND filter and a hard ND grad.

And with this I bid you all farewell again as I'm off on another very last minute adventure, overland and camping in East Africa.
