Jeff Smith61,925Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Olav Folland40,259So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005
Lotus Carroll1,774,241This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Instill A Sense of The Bizarre. What is meant by this? Get wacky, odd... put a strange or ironic twist on your self portrait. Get into your "Twilight Zone" state of mind and lets all get a little weird together this month. :) @104871116467578397659, one of our many talented moderators in The Art of Self Portraiture Community, wrote a great tutorial that will help you! Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Inspiration* Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/M7XTQ and ask away! We have categories for questions and discussion and are happy to help with anything. Megan McGuire2,743Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

I'm invoking Section 9 of the Google Penal code because if this isn't art, I don't know...

But that's not why I'm posting.  Right now, +Google Photos is pretty much useless.  I posted this days ago, and the only way I can find it is to go to Photos, and then go back to the old G+ photos.  In fact, the only thing I can find in Photos is crap I've posted from my phone.

This downright unacceptable.  We either need Photos to work like we were promised, or we need to default to what actually works on G+ until it's sorted out.

Note: this isn't me ragequitting, this is me saying I can't recommend artists to G+ until their photos work.

A friend of mine posted this earlier, and it's given me a fair amount of thought (in disclosure, some of this is copypasta from a private group since I took the time to type it all out).

I'm bipolar with some other stuff thrown in for fun.  There, I said it.

My particular manifestation is that I can't really deal with crowds, a lot of noise (that's all trying to grab my attention), or pretty much any other overstimulating environment.  I just can't process it all.  Random things will make me seem high, but in different circumstances can send me so low that people worry.  Sometimes, I can go between states so quickly that the best I can explain is that part of my brain is just screaming at me, and I can't get away from it.

And, it's rough.  I mean, I work full-time and somehow managed to keep my jorb as I descended into madness.  Iskirted... more »

Apparently I was bored.

011 = international dialing
211 = heath & human services (to help you figure out to call for help)
311 = non-emergency services (say you wanted to complain about your neighbor's lawn or something
411 = "information".  Pre-internet, you'd call that number if you were trying to find a phone number, or whatever else.  Usually that is/was billable.
511 = transportation services.  Road info, etc.
611 = the phone company.  Billing, service problems, whatever.  This number works by just having the phone plugged into the wall (it's also reserved for cellphones)
711 = phone assistance for deaf people.  Deaf folks had a phone that (is) was like an electronic typewriter with a screen they could read.  711 transposed the voice on the other end to text, and vice-versa

Unfortunately there's a lot of ambiguity about 111 so I don't have a definitive answer for that.  It may mask caller ID___

Strangely drawn to watch Richard III.  I'll probably have to stop half-way through so Kat doesn't get spoilers, but whatver.

And I promise, this has nothing to do with anything in the current news, except perhaps all the NSA BS that's still going on.

I don't recommend it, but sometimes being a gimp doesn't completely suck.

edit: they were very cool about the whole thing.  They had a bunch of free scooters (like the one I'm sitting in) as well as a whole bunch of 4-seat carts to take people between holes and stuff.  Some of the bigger holes even had spots where we didn't have to drag ourselves into the grandstands.  Good times.

So five+ hours of my life went into combing through these awesome photos and deciding what I liked best, and why.

I'm not going to ruin the surprise, so you'll just have to stay tuned at +ViewBug - Photo Contests to find the results in the next day or three.

http://www.viewbug.com/blog/city-lights-photo-contest-finalists

On a related note, all y'all should check out their contests.  There's usually something for everyone, good prizes,  (The winner here gets an Apple TV, and they're not all "HAHA we own ur photos" like a lot of contests.

An interesting power/tech thing:

I was decompressing from the Senior Open this evening, and at the same time in a discussion partly about solar power.

So, I called +SolarCity to talk to the nice people there about getting a system set up at my place.  I haven't read all the teeny details, but it seems to, at the worst, be just under parity vs my current grid costs.  Not to go into details, but it doesn't seem like a horrible idea.

But that's not the interesting part.  The interesting part is this:
Assuming I'm going to go solar, one of the requirements for me is energy storage for night-time use.  I mean, it seems slightly silly to sell excess power to the grid during the day, and then buy some of it back that night, right?

So, one of the reasons I called Solar City was because Elon Musk, and they have that fancy Powerwall battery that Tesla introduced at the end of April (less than three months ago, anyway).  Here's a $5K power pack that can run my home for a couple of days of bad weather.  Sweet.

But there's a problem.  They'll come out and do the site engineering here in a few weeks to see if it makes sense for both of us (it's a leased system agreement), but they couldn't do in install until next March.

Why?  Because I want the battery.  They don't have any.  None.  Every one is already sold out for the next nine months.  In two months they've sold all the batteries.

And even more interesting, is that if the guy is right, v2.0 (due in March) will be about $1K less, and have twice the storage capacity.

But yeah, PowerWall sold out in two months.

Edit:  two things - one, reservations for 2015 filled up in the first week.  That's around 80,000 batteries.  Two, much if this is reservations, so real numbers can vary depending on how many reservations turn into actual sales.  But, they can't overbook like the airline industry. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-05-08/tesla-s-battery-grabbed-800-million-in-its-first-week___

The moment I realized that I am a photographer was the moment I realized that life isn't fluid - it's a series of moments - vignettes, if you will.

Each one to be savored for its vitality and the subtle underpinnings of light, color, shadows, etc. that binds the moment together. Like one of those old flipbooks that were a series of photographs, that when strung together created movement.

And since then, I've strived to capture those moments, if not on camera, at least in my head. And sometimes the moments in my head on camera.

I think it was always there, intrinsically. I'm sure my parents saw it, or they wouldn't have given me a Yashica SLR when I was nine. It wasn't until a long hiatus between that camera getting stolen, and picking up a new camera many years later that it all really made sense though

I was helping Kat set up her "new" tablet (older Samsung flashed with a custom ROM) and found a good app (so far) this morning.  Someone's ported Open Office to Android, which I've been waiting for for a while.

First, some caveats - you really need to have a tablet, and you really, really need a keyboard.  The on-screen keyboard just covers too much real estate.

That said, it's forked from OO, but it's the full suite, including the normal drop-down menus, etc, horked around a little to work on a tablet.  The biggest change I've found so far is the addition of a "virtual" trackpad, which does take some getting used to - moving your finger around normally scrolls and stuff, but the trackpad is necessary for moving the cursor.  I haven't tried a BT mouse yet.

I only laugh because there's a lot of truth to it.

But to be fair, when I take the Mamiya out, those 12 shots have to count, because for one, I have to pay for the suckful shots too, and for two, I only have one film back, and its a real PITA to swap rolls in the field.

Also, when I'm shooting digital, I can afford to experiment.

I skirted the issue as much as I could maybe some from the stigma, but largely because I didn't know what was wrong, and I wanted to try and keep things together until I had some answers, and a treatment that was working (sorta).  I did end up telling my boss at some point, mostly because I'd hit a plateau that wasn't quite enough.  No details of diagnosis, just that I was being treatment by a shrink.

Anyhoo, I'll talk about it publicly in the right settings (or when there's something relevant, like this), but in general I guess I figure it's no one's business what's going on in my head unless I want to tell them.  My HR manager currently just knows "I have a problem with crowds".  Some of my IRL friends know a little more, and some know most the nature of my illness, if not the backstory.

It's not that I really want to hide it, but I don't want the label.  Sure, that's part of me, but it's not who I am.  If it makes sense, I rarely talk about my day jorb for the same reason.

I want people to understand that I have limitations, just like they have limitations, and we should respect each other's limitations.  Labels only really matter in certain circumstances, you know?

I guess what's important is symptoms - that's what people need to know, and that's what they can comprehend.  Me being bipolar isn't really relevant, since it's the symptoms that affect me and those around me.  Like my HR person the other day - if I'd told her that I'm bipolar and have social anxiety (among other socialization issues) her eyes would have glossed over.  Me saying "I have a problem with crowds, and I think that would be a bad thing for me" is something she could grasp.

My bipolar isn't my wife's bipolar isn't your bipolar, etc..  My wife and I share the same meds (which I recommend, it's really handy if you can get different dosages) but our schedule is completely different.  I take seroquel around the clock to stay functional, and she usually just needs it at bedtime.  But at the same time, I can do that and work, where she just can't work for that and other reasons.

Labels just lead to assumptions, and that's a bad thing, regardless of how destigmatized the illness is.  It's not entirely unlike a woman saying she has cancer and you assume it's breast cancer.  And beyond that, cancer affects everyone differently, both mentally and physically.  How it affects their loved ones is important too, and in a similar way that dealing with cray cray does (but that's a different discussion).

The point being, a number of us have the same illness and the manifestations differ greatly.

Would you want to say "I'm bipolar" and they automatically assume you're just like me, or like their friend, or like the homeless guy they served at the soup kitchen?  Because that's exactly what people are going to do - they're going to take your label and put you in a little box based on their experience, and that's just human nature.   Bipolar is a wide spectrum disorder, and there are no really firm symptoms other than violent mood swings.  And as I mentioned, I can go through the spectrum so fast it seems like all at once - and not always for any noticeable trigger.  Or I can go manic and crash.  Or I can be totally depressed and be irrationally "up". Some people do this, some people don't.   I can say my "ups" have included things like buying plane tickets, and my downs include staring at G+ but not able to form words.

The symptoms are what really matter, and people need to be understanding of those.  If someone says, "I can't do this because of 'x'", it doesn't mean they shouldn't invite them to the next thing, because it may be a different circumstance.  People particularly need to not push things when - anyone - says they "can't", no matter the reason. The person they're badgering may not have any sort of diagnosis whatsoever, but if they're uncomfortable with the idea, then "no" needs to mean "no" in the mental health spectrum the same way it's supposed to be applied to sex.  And they need to be allowed the same in return.

Labels are good for doctors, and things like when someone is so incapacitated they can't work/function, even with meds (i.e., disability).  Otherwise, they just don't fucking matter.  You respect my limits, I respect your limits, and we'll all get along okay.  I mean, everyone is a little crazy when it comes down to it, it's just a matter of degree.

This is probably the best thing I've read all week:  Selfy to blowed up in 22 hours.

Pro tip: When you are at war, posting selfies from a secret military base is probably not the wisest course of action. It doesn't help when you brag about all of the fantastic command and control capabilities of this new base. And it really doesn't help when you include location tags, so that your post comes complete with latitude and longitude.

Also, the head of the USAF's Air Combat Command is apparently named "Hawk." ___This is probably the best thing I've read all week:  Selfy to blowed up in 22 hours.

And some other stuff.  Honestly, it's one of the most powerful radio segments I've ever heard.

I've spent way too much of my evening talking about knives.

So here's my favorite.  Ive never found it's equal (unless you want the plastic NSF version.  It's cheaper)  http://amzn.to/1PYsRRQ

My boy turned 17 today, which is awesome and scary at the same time.  He's turned out to be a pretty damn good kid (would be better if he hadn't inherited my 'can't get shit done on time' gene tho)

But me, the pretend photographer, got zero photos.  Not one.

Why?  Because from the moment I walked in the door I was crowded into a small space with some 13 people all talking at once, and it never stopped.  Not in two hours.  Despite some social lubricant and a couple bits of 'rescue medicine' I was mostly reduced to not freaking out if someone talked to me.

Mental illness sucks :(

I have to share my initial impression of +Google Photos:

One, editing capabilities are about 1/3 of what they used to be.  Not a big deal for my "serious" photos, but barely enough for my cellphone snaps.

Two, there's a certain amount of clunkiness.  If nothing else, clicking on the photos tab in G+ now takes you to Google Photos, but it takes two clicks to get back to G+ (back to G+ photos, which they bypassed on the way there, and then back to G+ proper)

_If you're lucky_.  Poking around, it's possible to get into holes where there's no link back to G+ anything.  When you first go there, there's also an option on the drop-down to go back - in fact, that's the only way to return to G+ proper without manually typing plus.google.com in the top bar, or hitting the grid array in the upper-right.

On the bright side, when you click into Photos, you get the option to go back to G+ photos, with all the old editing tools.

Overall, it feels like beta software to me.  It's definitely an app that's been shoe-horned in, and so completely separate from G+,  or anything else, that it's really lost any sense of cohesiveness.

https://picasaweb.google.com (yes, it's still there.  click the URL, then click return to Picasa) still has more relevance to G+ than Photos does.

Edit - and I tried to share something to FB earlier (I know, heresy) and the pop-up showed my profile pic with a link that read "Olav's photos" (or something like that).  Naturally I didn't share because I have no way of knowing what it would do.

(re-edited for cohesiveness)___

In case you were wondering, this is what six pounds of macaroni salad looks like. For reference, the bowl is 18" in diameter.

It's got to be a testament to excellent engineering that I bought a Moto G for my third kid yesterday - we decided a bit after I bought one for the eldest that the other two get a smartphone when they graduated the 8th grade.  It's also a testament that my eldest is still using his since 2013.

Well done, +Motorola Mobility, well done.

It's been a while since I've brought out the projector, but we finally have the studio back into some sort of usefulness.

I had occasion to poke through my old stuff, and I cam across one of my favorite abstract photos.  Like nearly everything I do, it was all done in-camera to boot.

First take with the glow sticks. I almost used this one, but I like the effects of the other shot better. Only illumination here is the glowstick muck on her skin.___I had occasion to poke through my old stuff, and I cam across one of my favorite abstract photos.  Like nearly everything I do, it was all done in-camera to boot.

A looooong time ago, a bunch of us photography geeks held "smackdowns", a weekly event pitting two photographers mano y mano with a surprise theme.  Contestants and themes would be posted on Sunday, and 3-5 photos would be posted on Friday (I'd move this to Saturday) along with a bunch of light-hearted trash talk for the amusement of the masses.  The photos would be juried by three anonymous judges based on both technical and artistic skills (i.e., sometimes creativity beat technical merit), and the results posted by one of the managers along with some choice quotes from the jury.

Anyway, I've been thinking about bringing this back, but it's not something I can do myself.  I'd like to gauge how much interest there is, and if there are a couple of people out there with better organisational skills than I have to help me out.

This album was my first - the theme was "light" (or something like that) and includes both entries, and the almost-rans I considered.___

Since I have a little (rare) free time this weekend, I'm starting to put some collections together.  First up: food stuff.  I've gone back about six months, and may go further as time permits.
