Jeff Smith61,986Welcome to The Selfie Sunday Project for April 5, 2015 We are back! First thing you may notice is "Selfy" has become "Selfie", just a change to keep up with the more recognized spelling of selfie. A general theme for this week is *New Beginnings* , it's Spring and Selfie Sunday has returned so it seems to fit. If you can't stick to the theme no worries either, since we are freshly back and running any selfie you take is fine.  Please read this post for the guidelines and FAQ for Selfie Sunday. http://goo.gl/SKnkZ8 Your photo can be taken from Mar. 30/15 before the event up until 8:00 AM EDT Monday Apr. 6/15. Older photos posted will be removed from the event. Please only post one photo to the event and that photo should ideally be taken the weekend or the week prior to the event. Olav Folland40,236So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005

Megan McGuire2,765Get excited for the  G+ 2 year anniversary photowalk!. For the Sacramento photo walk we are starting outside of the Railroad museum located in Old Sac. We will work our way around this charming old west styled area for a for a couple of hours. Then we will most likely grab some refreshments around lunch time and discuss as a group if we would like to go into the  RR museum, head toward the capitol where we can shoot both inside and out, explore some more of old Sac, or decide we're too tired to go on.  Please send this along to anyone else you think would be interested.  Pack sunblock and water, it's going to be a hot one Saturday!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk Sacramento2013-06-29 19:00:009

Windows 10, four hours in:
*note: I ran the update instead of a clean install because I'm feeling lazy

Truth be had, I  haven't played with it that much.

First, I had to go and set back all my defaults.  I still haven't figured out how to get apps to open browsers in Chrome (rather than IE) even though that's now the default.

Second was about two hours of going through and figuring out how to turn stuff off, and uninstall where possible.  You can disable, but not uninstall Cortana (at least as far as I've found) but you can uninstall OneDrive - but it really, really doesn't want to go away.

Third was running Wise365 to clean up all the crap.  That took a while, but it takes a while every time, because Windows.

Fourth was getting my antivirus software again.  This was particularly fun as the Windows update had notonly d... more »

Spider webs are among the coolest things on Earth (well, until you walk into one in the middle of the night).

Ounce-for-ounce, spider silk is stronger than steel, but that's only the half of it.

Take a look at any spider web.  Each type of spider spins a completely different kind of web based on it's hunting techniques, and where it likes to set up shop.  These guys used orb weaver webs because they're probably the coolest.  I don't know about your neck of the woods, but the weavers around here have been known to make 3-foot diameter webs, anchored to the craziest things.  We had one that set up shop in a web anchored on one end to the rain gutter, and on the other end to a spot on the hot tub carefully located that it wouldn't be disturbed by our using it.

But what's so special about a spider's web?  Let's take our friend above for an example.  (S)he built this massive affair that on one hand gets pretty regularly buffeted by the winds, but at the same time has to deal with occasionally rather large bugs flying right into it.  Somehow, she managed to balance the two rather well.

So, that's where these guys come in.  They've been modeling, and then printing, synthetic webs to see what makes them tick.

The potential applications are pretty cool - combine material science with biology to create super-strong, lightweight structures that require a minimum of material catered to the task.

So, this happened....

It's nowhere near perfect, since Apple "silos" non-Apple apps, but the consensus I've been reading across the web is that the app+watch covers most of the things that the average user would use a smartwatch for.  And, if you're already using Google apps on your phone, it extends most of those fairly nicely.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/android-wear-now-works-with-iphones.html

**Note, this isn't a yay Google, boo Apple post - I save those for special things.  This does, however, have the potential of blowing open the smartwatch market by making core features far more affordable.

I saw this the other day, and it's still cracking me the hell up.

Honestly, this sort of thing should happen any time politcos gerrymander an area to get what they want (I'm also looking at you California legislature)

TL;DR: a bunch of politicos and business-types get together and form an "improvement district" basically with the intent of passing a sales tax increase to make their area look all pretty.  Problem is, despite all their gerrymandering, there's one college student registered to vote within the district.  Basically, because there's a voter, the property owners don't get to vote. So, if they decide to hold the referendum, she's the one and only vote on the sales tax.

There are a lot of things to geek out about in the world, and admittedly one of my fascinations is typeface (basically, a family of fonts).  I get to fiddle around with graphic design here and there - company newsletters, ad copy, that sort of thing - and it's pretty cool to watch how changing from one font to another (similar) font can change the entire nature of the piece.  We could go for an extreme example - Imagine the Gettysburg Address in Comic Sans - but it's best not to think about it.

But I'll admit, I'm rather a hack, as my pro graphics designers will surely point out, but then there are the uber-geeks out there.  These are the folks that sit around and design new typefaces for fun.

And then there's Doves Type.  Doves Type was created circa 1900, when the world was moved from typesetting to mechanical printers.  It was a labour of love, and at that point (pun intended) rather an anachronism.  The story behind it is one of friendships, partnerships, gain, loss, and at least a ton of metal being dumped in the Thames in the middle of the night.  (more on that here:  http://www.typespec.co.uk/doves-type-revival/)

If those guys weren't geeks enough, 100 years later a guy comes along and gets really obsessed about it - not only did he set out to re-create the type in digital form, he paid divers to collect whatever they could from the river and refined his creation based on what they dug up.

Anyway, it's taking a lot of will to not license they type for my own nefarious purposes.  Perhaps I should put it on my birthday list.

Okay, maybe someone knows someone who can help me.  I'm not ever sure where to start asking, and teh Googles are pretty useless.

I have a friend who added a contact, and Google Contacts pulled some random G+ account because the latter has their old phone number listed.  She's unable to separate or remove the outdated contact info.  I've tried taking her through both contact preview, and the older contacts method and there's nothing to be done.  She also doesn't seem to be able to separate them on her phone because unlike my Nexus 7, her contact manager doesn't have that option (I think she has an iPhone, but I haven't heard back edit:  Samsung S4/Touchwiz)

Any ideas?

Today's "neat"

Molecular computing is a neat idea.  I mean, we're talking about assembling molecules into something analogous to a silicon circuit.  The promises are "small, fast, and cheap".   These guys seem to have made a pretty significant leap, which I can't say about a lot of alternative electronics.  I'm not going to hold my breath until they grow something that can be connected to the outside world, though.

That said, something along the lines of "growing" solar cells in sheets is something that's probably attainable and worth pursuing in the shorter term (less that 15 years) since they're basically a crystalline matrix on silicon anyway.  That could go a long way towards making it cost-effective to putting solar arrays on anything that doesn't move.

I get a couple of trade emails a day, and between them and wanderings on the web I come across stuff that's really neat, especially if you like to geek out now and then.

So, I figured I'd start a collection.

First up is a peek inside the Apple Watch.  Herein you can find the guts of the watch ripped apart, x-rayed, and cut in half for your amusement.

SiP is neat, because if you look at a motherboard in a computer and take away a lot of the connectors and stuff and condense it down you have basically all the core components in a 1" square package.  Granted, this is highly specialized, vs the generalization a computer requires, but it's the same general idea.

As they say, the EMI shielding around the Broadcom chip is pretty novel.  Adding metallization where there's usually just plastic molding requires a bunch of additional processing steps, which they wouldn't do unless it's really necessary.  The Broadcom chip is the Wi-Fi chip, so that probably does explain it.  It's both noisy in itself, and can also be sensitive to other noisy stuff.

The big thing that makes this possible, is that they've gotten away from all the packaging that you see around ICs on a normal circuit board, and just used the bits of silicon "die" that are the actual components.  This isn't anything new at all, but the compactness is pretty impressive.

I just had a great idea for a dating website (mostly for women)

Say you meet a guy, and talk and stuff, and start emailing each other.  Normal, right?

Where this website would come in - a couple of emails in, you would put your email address, and his email address into a form, and (he) would get an obvious spear-phishing email: Your name, but the reply-to is "dickcheese327@hotmail.com"(or whatever) and a link that just says "click here to see my noodz"

If he clicks the link, he gets a website that just says "pwn3ed" and you get an email saying that he's an idiot.

Third was running Wise365 to clean up all the crap.  That took a while, but it takes a while every time, because Windows.

Fourth was getting my antivirus software again.  This was particularly fun as the Windows update had not only disabled it, but buried it so far down that it didn't even show up in the programs list in Control Panel.  The solution was to download and install it, which allowed me to uninstall the old version and then install the new one.

Fifth, I went back, looking for more privacy settings & whatnot to turn off.  I found a bunch of things I'd missed on pass #1, but I gave up after one search after another led to more things.  The final straw was the setting where Windows uses my bandwidth to update other people's computers (like torrent).

At this point, I've decided I can't recommend an update, at least until I can put together a document explaining what to disable/remove, how, and why. ___

Let's say (for the sake of argument) you make towels that you sell to hitchhikers.  Hitchhikers being what they are, traversing the galaxy on 30 Altarian Dollars a day and all, obviously have a limited budget so you've carefully crafted a price that is reasonable to them, but at the same time if by some really off chance, some vendor from the Centurian Mega-Mart would like to buy them for resale you'd still make a buck or two once everyone is paid off.

Some wag comes along and for some random reason wants to buy a bunch of towels.  Doesn't want to sell them, but rather hand them out to wayward hitchhikers that have managed to lose theirs.  Probably due to their old towel achieving such a high level of civilization that it invents space travel.  The reason isn't so important though.

What do?  You're used to selling towels at a fair price, but this wag wants to buy - and he doesn't even know - 100, 200, 500 of their slummy awesomeness.  You gotta cut the wag a deal, but it also has to be fair.

Well, okay, there are pretty, pretty princess that would wear this too - once, at their bachelorette party.

But, this just sums up the sort of culture we've become.  Everyone (it seems) is running around looking for things to be offended by, and will come up with some seriously weird justifications so they can martyr themselves.  I want no more of it.

And I promise, this has nothing to do with anything in the current news, except perhaps all the NSA BS that's still going on.

I don't recommend it, but sometimes being a gimp doesn't completely suck.

edit: they were very cool about the whole thing.  They had a bunch of free scooters (like the one I'm sitting in) as well as a whole bunch of 4-seat carts to take people between holes and stuff.  Some of the bigger holes even had spots where we didn't have to drag ourselves into the grandstands.  Good times.

So five+ hours of my life went into combing through these awesome photos and deciding what I liked best, and why.

I'm not going to ruin the surprise, so you'll just have to stay tuned at +ViewBug - Photo Contests to find the results in the next day or three.

http://www.viewbug.com/blog/city-lights-photo-contest-finalists

On a related note, all y'all should check out their contests.  There's usually something for everyone, good prizes,  (The winner here gets an Apple TV, and they're not all "HAHA we own ur photos" like a lot of contests.

rustle rustle rustle
Teenage skunk wanders onto the patio.
Me:  "Hi there!"
Skunk:  *rustle*
Me: "I think you want to go the other way"
Skunk:  _rustles back off into the dark_

It's not typical, but it's not the first conversation we've had with the family that lives nearby.

An interesting power/tech thing:

I was decompressing from the Senior Open this evening, and at the same time in a discussion partly about solar power.

So, I called +SolarCity to talk to the nice people there about getting a system set up at my place.  I haven't read all the teeny details, but it seems to, at the worst, be just under parity vs my current grid costs.  Not to go into details, but it doesn't seem like a horrible idea.

But that's not the interesting part.  The interesting part is this:
Assuming I'm going to go solar, one of the requirements for me is energy storage for night-time use.  I mean, it seems slightly silly to sell excess power to the grid during the day, and then buy some of it back that night, right?

So, one of the reasons I called Solar City was because Elon Musk, and they have that fancy Powerwall battery thatTesla... more »

So, one of the reasons I called Solar City was because Elon Musk, and they have that fancy Powerwall battery that Tesla introduced at the end of April (less than three months ago, anyway).  Here's a $5K power pack that can run my home for a couple of days of bad weather.  Sweet.

But there's a problem.  They'll come out and do the site engineering here in a few weeks to see if it makes sense for both of us (it's a leased system agreement), but they couldn't do in install until next March.

Why?  Because I want the battery.  They don't have any.  None.  Every one is already sold out for the next nine months.  In two months they've sold all the batteries.

And even more interesting, is that if the guy is right, v2.0 (due in March) will be about $1K less, and have twice the storage capacity.

But yeah, PowerWall sold out in two months.

Edit:  two things - one, reservations for 2015 filled up in the first week.  That's around 80,000 batteries.  Two, much if this is reservations, so real numbers can vary depending on how many reservations turn into actual sales.  But, they can't overbook like the airline industry. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-05-08/tesla-s-battery-grabbed-800-million-in-its-first-week___

Second-guessing history....

How much better would Monty Python and the Holy Grail be if they had made bunnies a running gag?

The moment I realized that I am a photographer was the moment I realized that life isn't fluid - it's a series of moments - vignettes, if you will.

Each one to be savored for its vitality and the subtle underpinnings of light, color, shadows, etc. that binds the moment together. Like one of those old flipbooks that were a series of photographs, that when strung together created movement.

And since then, I've strived to capture those moments, if not on camera, at least in my head. And sometimes the moments in my head on camera.

I think it was always there, intrinsically. I'm sure my parents saw it, or they wouldn't have given me a Yashica SLR when I was nine. It wasn't until a long hiatus between that camera getting stolen, and picking up a new camera many years later that it all really made sense though

Other than photos posted before Photos was launched, the only photos I can find are from my phone.  Nothing I've uploaded to G+ from my computer shows up - I have to go back to "classic" G+ photos to find them.  Is this intentional?
