Kris and I are off to Costa Rica tomorrow.  I just wanted to say thanks to the guys at Guragear.com. I have their photo backpack (the Kiboko) and realized I lost the rain cover for it -- something I'll no doubt need in the rainforest.  I wrote to them to ask how much it would be to buy a replacement, and they shipped me one free of charge.  Not only is it a great bag (the lightest one I know of at this level of quality and roominess), but I can now say they have great customer service as well.

Jeff Atwood's puzzle: "A hundred prisoners are each locked in a room with three pirates, one of whom will walk the plank in the morning. Each prisoner has 10 bottles of wine, one of which has been poisoned; and each pirate has 12 coins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs either more or less than a genuine coin. In the room is a single switch, which the prisoner may either leave as it is, or flip. Before being led into the rooms, the prisoners are all made to wear either a red hat or a blue hat; they can see all the other prisoners' hats, but not their own. Meanwhile, a six-digit prime number of monkeys multiply until their digits reverse, then all have to get across a river using a canoe that can hold at most two monkeys at a time. But half the monkeys always lie and the other half always tell the truth. Given that the Nth prisoner knows that one of the monkeys doesn't know that a... more »

Andrew Revkin does some research on the recent WSJ Op-Ed which asserted that the best response to climate is to do nothing for 50 years. The Op-Ed cites William Nordhaus as supporting their case, but Revkin asked Nordhaus, who said "The piece completely misrepresented my work. My work has long taken the view that policies to slow global warming would have net economic benefits, in the trillion of dollars of present value. ... I have advocated a carbon tax for many years as the best way to attack the issue. I can only assume they either completely ignorant of the economics on the issue or are willfully misstating my findings."

#aiclass - We're having an optional AI programming contest for those class members who choose to participate. Instructions are at http://code.google.com/p/opennero/wiki/NeroTournamentExercise . Submissions will be due on December 15th at midnight CST (which is GMT-6:00). This is on the Open Nero platform, which you have seen some demos from before. The contest is hosted by Risto Miikkulainen and his team at the University of Texas. Thanks to the team and good luck to the participants. Check out the web site, decide if you want to participate (and even if you don't, now would be a good time to review some of the nice demos there, in preparation for the upcoming final).

#aiclass I apologize for the glitch with the office hours hangout this morning. We had 27 of you come in to the hangout live, and I thought we had a great conversation. But unfortunately there were software problems with the broadcast distribution of the hangout, and the majority of you who tried to connect were turned away. We'll try again another day. In the mean time, 1000 of you asked 300 questions, and 12,000 voted for the toip questions, so Sebastian and I will record answers to a bunch of those and post them soon.

I don't always agree with David Brooks, but when I do ... well, today he makes the excellent point that raising the educational attainment of the 70% without a college degree would do more for the long-term betterment of the country than resolving the 99/1% divide. Too bad he didn't give us any hints on how to go about it...

Inspired by +Matt Cutts , I'm embarking on a 30-day challenge: I hereby decree that I will give up all sugary foods for the next 30 days. No ice cream, no cake, no candy, no sugary soft drinks, no sugar in coffee. If a bread recipe happens to have a little sugar in it, that's ok, but nothing that is primarily a sweet. If my willpower wavers, or if I am forced through politeness to have piece of somebody's birthday cake, I'll confess here.

#aiclass, congratulations to the 46,000 of you who did homework #1. A total of 134,000 of you visited the site yesterday, some to complete the homework, and some, in the Basic Track, just to watch the videos. Welcome and thank you to all.

#aiclass Thank you all for being such thoughtful and considerate discussants in the various forums: here, on reddit, on facebook, and others. Sometimes a community can get out of hand, but you all have behaved admirably. Just as a reminder, we expect you to do homework assignments and exams on your own, and to not discuss them until the due date has passed. For quizzes and general questions/discussion about the lectures, you all have been doing great at helping each other out and having good discussions. Keep it up! But do let people have the experience of thinking about quiz questions on their own too. You can provide a hint or clarification, but don't give away answers and rob others of the chance to think about it.

#aiclass There was a huge rush of people finishing their homework in the final few hours, so we decided to extend the deadline by 24 hours. You now have just over 21 hours left to get homework #1 finished. Good luck!
