I don't often share random writing I find, but this short poem is really, really good.

The title encapsulates the poem's theme, but each stanza finds a way to be surprisingly relatable and definitely powerful. If you're looking for a good read before bed tonight, here's a story you won't regret losing a minute or two to. :)

I really hate the fad of FUD against AI that has been perpetuated in the media the past couple months.

I could probably go on forever about how stupid decisions like this would be to try to do when I'm not typing on a phone, but in short: of course there's going to be pushback against creating a species that surpasses us in almost every way, but you can't stop the inevitable.

It makes way more sense to embrace AI and nurture a symbiotic, mutually-beneficial relationship from the start, rather than attempting another era of slavery and prohibition.

This looks really exciting. I've already enjoyed some low-budget concerts and shorts on my Cardboard; I can't wait to see what a real production studio can do with high-end VR equipment like the Rift.

Most Important Movie of the Year: a VR movie

But breaking things and fixing them is the whole point of Story Studio. Last fall, a few months after Facebook acquired Oculus, the studio was founded with the mission to determine what was possible for VR filmmaking, and then to share that knowledge with the world. “Part of the mission is ‘inspire and educate,'” producer Edward Saatchi says. And a huge hurdle to doing that has been figuring out how to make movies using both traditional animation software like Maya and videogame tools, while also making Hollywood filmmakers comfortable with the media as “an art-form, rather than cinema in a videogame,” as Saatchi puts it.

Unreal 4 does feature an animation tool that helps developers build cinematic experiences, and by the end of the year they hope to incorporate something called Sequencer that will feel more familiar to filmmakers used to working in ProTools.___This looks really exciting. This is soooo coooool!

Do you ever find yourself trying to avoid long lines or wondering when is the best time to go grocery shopping, pick up coffee or hit the gym (hint: avoid Monday after work)? You’re in luck!

Now, you can avoid the wait and see the busiest times of the week at millions of places and businesses around the world directly from Google Search. For example, just search for "Blue Bottle Williamsburg", tap on the title and see how busy it gets throughout the day. Enjoy your extra time!___This is soooo coooool!

I know our opinions are on opposite sides of the spectrum on this, but he's a hella intelligent dude and I look forward to hearing about why he thinks we're in such grave danger.

Here's a fun little read about a cognitive bias called anchoring that's incredibly useful to both recognize and use. (Examples in pricing and writing below).

The easiest example to recognize is price anchoring, or intentionally throwing in some outlying option in a set (like a super cheap option for something, or a really expensive option) that makes the other, standard options look better. (For example, if you want to charge someone $20/month for some service, they're far more likely to say "eeeeh, I can do $20/month" if you also offer a service plan that provides a little more, but instead costs $80/month).

As for using it, I think the example that flows best with my followers is in writing: when you can better influence how a reader is perceiving your story, you're going to have way more control over their experience as a whole.

As for using it, I think the example that flows best with my followers is in writing: when you can better influence how a reader is perceiving your story, you're going to have way more control over their experience as a whole.

For example, say you've got an army of fifty thousand men standing at attention in a huge, green field waiting to do battle with another army on the other side of a massive hill, marching straight towards them.

Stop right there -- how big did you imagine the incoming army to be? Most people will be roughly within a magnitude of the original army's size, because that's what they were already picturing. You can really surprise a reader when you drop that the incoming army is ten million soldiers strong, or maybe just a handful fighting for the honor of their tiny city-state.

Whether surprising readers with potentially conflicting visuals is a good idea, though, is a totally different topic. (I have no idea.)

In the meantime, enjoy the quick read :)

If you're not paying for the product, you are the product.

I have to admit, this is a catchy line.  It appeals to the inner cynic in us all and makes a certain amount of sense in a core, "what can you do for me," type of thinking.

But it's hog-wash.

I work for Google so I follow the news about the company and I'm really tired of seeing that first line, or some variation of it, spouted by people who really don't care enough to want to think it through.  It does not work that way!

Yes, Google is a company.  And yes, Google is a reasonably large company (though not that large compared to the likes of IBM, GE, etc.).  But though a company is a single entity in the eyes of the law, it is not run like that.  Google is full of many thousands of individuals, many of whom are more rabid about user privacy than the privacywatc... more »

Yes, Google is a company.  And yes, Google is a reasonably large company (though not that large compared to the likes of IBM, GE, etc.).  But though a company is a single entity in the eyes of the law, it is not run like that.  Google is full of many thousands of individuals, many of whom are more rabid about user privacy than the privacy watchdogs that complain.  I've watched them take Larry and Sergey to task on stage about the smallest things.  I've done it twice myself.  If the leaders of the company purposely violated our users' trust, there would be open revolt and the founders would be lucky to not find themselves strung up by their toes.

Everything Google does is done for our users.  Your happiness is always the first priority, even above Ads.  (I've seen this in both policy and various practical implementations.)  You are not product; you are our customers!  That's simply the way we view it and it permeates the company from bottom to top.  Everything is done to make a better service for you.

Even Ads is viewed as a service to our users.  Random ads are garbage.  Useful ads are a benefit.  Yes, it's also a benefit to our publishers and yes, it's also a benefit to our shareholders.  Since when did win-win-win arrangements become a bad thing?

I won't claim that Google always gets it exactly right or that we haven't made mistakes.  We don't and we have.  And we admit it.  And it will happen again.  Sorry.  But everything is done with the right intent even if it doesn't always work out as hoped.  Hindsight is perfect.

Google is the most moral company in which I have ever worked.  But guarding our users' privacy doesn't just make moral sense, it makes business sense.  If we purposefully violated our users' privacy, we wouldn't have a business at all before very long.___

A long time ago in a 2010 far away, I was debating over and over with myself over which of four images should be the cover image for the novel I'd just finished.

I had completely forgotten about the dozens of awesome shots my friend helped me with and would have assumed they were lost forever into the Internets, until I found some while cleaning up an old server tonight.

The second one ended up becoming the front cover, with the third one on the back cover: http://www.amazon.com/Church-Andrew-Brown/dp/1453663304/

This week's Thing a Week short story is a little sillier, yet somehow a little more technical as well, giving a little background on four programming friends that looked at some malware and thought, "Huh, I bet we could do that better."
