The Weather Channel2,964,169*Upload your photos to this Event on 9/19 or using the #sunsetday hashtag in a public post to celebrate #sunsetday!* Join us for an exciting 24-hour event as we send summer into the sunset in global fashion. We are asking our Google+ audience from around the world to grab your favorite camera on the evening of September 19 and snap your own unique sunset from your corner of the globe. We want to see all types of sunsets in a variety of settings; a city skyline, a beach resort, a beautiful countryside, a desert landscape, a dense forest. *Wherever you may be, please share/upload your sunset image with this event page on September 19.* You can also participate outside of this event page by submitting a public photo post and tagging with #sunsetday. A select number of our favorite photos will be shown on The Weather Channel and accompany a slideshow on weather.com. Other favorites will be posted and rotated through as the cover photo on both +The Weather Channel and the +Google+ Photos  Google+ page. Note: *Only photos uploaded and posted to the event page or associated with the hashtag #sunsetday on Sep 19 will be considered* We hosted two Hangouts On Air in preparation for Sunset Day. The first hangout focused on the meteorology behind sunsets including the reason behind the beautiful array of colors.  The second hangout concentrated on the art of sunset photography. Expert photographers well known to the Google+ community talked about their techniques in capturing the perfect sunset. Links to both HOA videos are posted below. *HANGOUT SCHEDULE* 1. Fraser Cain959,478I'd like to invite everyone to enjoy the *Perseid Meteor Shower for 2013*. This is one of the best meteor showers of the year because it's very active - with upwards of 60 meteors/hour - but also because you get nice warm summer weather in the Northern Hemisphere. http://www.universetoday.com/103826/the-2013-perseid-meteor-shower-an-observers-guide/ The shower peaks on the morning of August 12, 2013, but you can see plenty of meteors for a few days before and after, as we pass through the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. Take some time right now to make plans with your friends and family to enjoy this wonderful meteor shower.  Find a place nearby with dark skies so you can really appreciate the meteors against the backdrop of the Milky Way. Pack some comfy camp chairs, a few blankets and bring snacks and drinks. A pair of binoculars would be nice, but they won't help you see meteors - you just need your eyeballs. Here's a great tool that shows you where there's light pollution: http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/ Find a spot that's at least green on the map if you can. I'll post more details to this event as we have more organized, but at the very least, click Yes to this event. Start planning your enjoyment of this once a year activity. Thanks to +Randy Halverson for the beautiful picture.Perseid Meteor Shower - 20132013-08-12 06:00:00424

The B&W version was the other day.. now for the color version....
This reminds me of the movie The FInal Countdown - Where fighters were taken back in time and scared the crap out of the then prop driven planes of the Japanese. BUt honestly it just looks good as a desktop wallpaper...

PS: feel free to use it as such - just remember where you got it...

Some very cool and spooky Airplane Graveyard photos from +Amy Heiden

North Island
Full moon night. 240 seconds. f/10. ISO 200

Earlier this year, I took a night photography workshop in Arizona taught by Mike Hows (http://takenpictures.com/) and Joe Reed (https://www.flickr.com/photos/hopeless_romantic_photography/).

It was a really great time hanging out in this airplane boneyard catching up with old friends. If you’re looking to do a night photography workshop I’d strongly encourage you to check out one of theirs. They get access to rad locations and have a great laid back and “hands on” teaching style.

First un-powered flight of the North American X-15.

The North American X-15 was a hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft operated by the United States Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as part of the X-plane series of experimental aircraft. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in aircraft and spacecraft design. As of 2015, the X-15 holds the official world record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned, powered aircraft. Its maximum speed was 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h), or Mach 6.72.

During the X-15 program, 13 flights by eight pilots met the Air Force spaceflight criterion by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80 km), thus qualifying the pilots for astronaut status. The Air Force pilots qualified for astronaut wings immediately, while the civilian pilots were awarded NASA astronaut wings in 2005, 35 years after the last X-15 flight. The sole Navy pilot in the X-15 program never took the aircraft above the requisite 50 mile altitude.

Of all the X-15 missions, two flights (by the same pilot) qualified as space flights per the international (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) definition of a spaceflight by exceeding 100 kilometers (62.1 mi) in altitude.....
