Fraser Cain898,304I'd like to invite everyone to enjoy the Perseid Meteor Shower for 2013. This is one of the best meteor showers of the year because it's very active - with upwards of 60 meteors/hour - but also because you get nice warm summer weather in the Northern Hemisphere.http://www.universetoday.com/103826/the-2013-perseid-meteor-shower-an-observers-guide/The shower peaks on the morning of August 12, 2013, but you can see plenty of meteors for a few days before and after, as we pass through the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle.Take some time right now to make plans with your friends and family to enjoy this wonderful meteor shower. Find a place nearby with dark skies so you can really appreciate the meteors against the backdrop of the Milky Way. Pack some comfy camp chairs, a few blankets and bring snacks and drinks. A pair of binoculars would be nice, but they won't help you see meteors - you just need your eyeballs. Here's a great tool that shows you where there's light pollution:http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/Find a spot that's at least green on the map if you can.I'll post more details to this event as we have more organized, but at the very least, click Yes to this event. Start planning your enjoyment of this once a year activity. Thanks to +Randy Halverson for the beautiful picture.Perseid Meteor Shower - 20132013-08-12 06:00:00431G+

Shawn Manaher2,468Better Business Circle (sorry for dup message forgot the circle)Google Plus is all about engaging with each other and building personal and professional networks.  One of the ways you can expand your professional network, gain followers and influence is to share and engage with others through a thing called Circle Sharing. As an owner of two small businesses, I know that networking is one of the greatest way to expand my business footprint and keep me fresh with new ideas.  Circle Sharing is doing that for me and that is why I added you.I've compiled a list of close to 200 Business Owners, Entrepreneurs and Business Service Professionals that I wanted to share with you, so you can start to also engage and build your areas of influence. How Do I Participate In This Circle?Simple, just do these three things:1. +1 this post if you think this idea is good2. Comment below how you think this could help your business and tell us all about your business - please keep it concise for now.3. Share this with other to expand your followers. You can share this Circle in three different ways:1. Followers2. Publicly3. IndividuallyI would suggest you start sharing publicly, then as this group grows and has more engagement, start to share it with your followers and individuals directly.Ok, that's all for now.I look forward to making more connections with each of you in the coming weeks and months! #betterbusinesscircle #sharedcircles #circleshare  P.S. Markos Giannopoulos3,766197 interesting People // If you're into technology, the Web, photography and science, here's a circle to consider. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Voila! I hope you find it interesting :) #circleshare   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  #circlesharing  2013-05-26 09:51:2119713412CC G+

Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113479149CC G+

Eric Hege3,232Photography StreamI haven't shared some of my circles in a while, so over the next few days I plan on doing this. Today's circle is my main photography stream. While I have several photography circle (you'll see a few others later), this is one group I check on a very regular basis. Most of them are very active, and all of them produce some really outstanding work!2013-03-25 00:14:45293908CC G+
Sumit Sen57,209A Circle ShareCircle sharing by individuals seems to passé these days, and most shares are curated circles put together on some general basis by a few. That suits me fine because I am not fashionable and pretty faded! :)This circle is not one which contains all my best friends here or all the folks whose photography I really admire. It contains members who are my engagement set. People who follow my posts and people whose posts appear on my stream on a regular basis. Part of the selection has to do with Gplus's stream feed algorithm and part of it has to do with time zones. But these 200 are part of my life on GPlus now and I meet them virtually almost everyday.I am sharing this list mainly for the benefit of my new followers who are looking for worthwhile additions to their circles. I expect that they will not be disappointed by the selection. Finally, comments are closed. You can of course share and plus if you want to :)2013-03-23 15:19:4120001580CC G+

Charles Lupica60,136►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers          ►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄Once again it's time to share my circle of the top 500 most followed photographers.  I'm sharing the circle here but I posted the the full list as a series of posts on +Most Followed Photographers on G+. Photographers with an " * " in front of their name are not included in the numbered count because they only share outside content,  their content is content suitable to a blog and usually has no images associated with it, or they have become mostly or completely inactive on G+.This list was complied from two previous lists and a line-by-line search of CircleCount.  If you know of someone that should have been on the list and isn't, the most likely cause is that their +CircleCount profile doesn't include the word photographer, or camera, photo, or foto. Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:145001353999CC G+

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard. Here is the 6th and last part  of my list of the top 500 most followed photographers - Here are links to the previous parts of the list.Group 1: http://tinyurl.com/cf58vws - 1 to 100Group 2: http://tinyurl.com/bodaspk - 101 to 193Group 3: http://tinyurl.com/bsb87u4 - 194 to 250 and circleGroup 4: http://tinyurl.com/d4ulv6q  - 250 to 340Group 5: http://tinyurl.com/cjpmgy4 - 341 to 420 Group 6: 421 to 500 and circle of 500 (this post)If you are on this list, I urge you to comment, plus and share the post. I have sifted through lots of pages and circles as well as http://circlecount.com/  to try to get an accurate list. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive. The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.#Top500CircleDec   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  420 +Jennifer Luzio 21797421 +Matt Suess 21794422 +Nichole McCall 21754423 +Dane Clingan 21718424 +Xavier Ruiz Canadell 21700425 +Emi Fujimoto 21697422013-01-07 15:33:25500221350CC G+

So you want a career in Photography and you are wondering what aspect / area you should specialize in... here is one metric to look at:

This is a screenshot from 500px's new Groups area - there are clear winners in what people are most interested in... Sorted by Most Popular and all groups...

Watching the growth over the past few days has been very interesting as it clearly shows Landscape photography as the biggest winner - but as you dive deeper there is clearly more people competing in the same space...

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has agreed to support the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) to manage the construction of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).

This marks the official federal start of the LSST project, the top-ranked major ground-based facility recommended by the National Research Council's Astronomy and Astrophysics decadal survey committee in its 2010 report, "New Worlds, New Horizons." It is an NSF and Department of Energy (DOE) partnership, with NSF responsible for the telescope and site, education and outreach, and the data management system and DOE providing the camera and related instrumentation. Both agencies expect to support post-construction operation of the observatory.

Lawrence Livermore has played a pivotal role in the LSST project over the last decade, including: development of the overall optical design; leadership in the development of the operations simulator (which calculates how the telescope can be optimally scheduled for multiple scientific programs); design of the wavefront sensing and guide sensor systems (which measure the aberrations in the telescope optics and the errors in pointing, so that these can be corrected by the telescope active optics and guiding systems); and design of the camera optics and filters (drawing on expertise from the National Ignition Facility's large optics development).

The Laboratory's current role in the LSST project includes a key management position for the camera system along with leadership responsibilities for two of the major camera sub-systems, the camera optics and the camera "corner rafts," which contain the wavefront and guide sensors. LLNL engineer Vincent Riot serves as the deputy project manager for the camera and is the project engineer for the corner rafts. LLNL also is responsible for the delivery of the camera optics and filters, the largest optical elements of their type ever constructed. The Laboratory recently selected Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. to build the optics and support structure for the two largest lenses, designated as the L1-L2 lens assembly, for the camera on the LSST, which will sit atop the 8,800 ft. tall Cerro Pachón mountaintop in Chile.

The 8.4-meter LSST will survey the entire visible sky deeply in multiple colors every week with its three-billion pixel digital camera, probing the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, and opening a movie-like window on objects that change or move rapidly: exploding supernovae, potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids and distant Kuiper Belt objects.

"This is the largest ground-based telescope being built with U.S. federal funding in this decade," said Scot Olivier, Livermore's lead on the LSST. "It's the No. 1 ranked project coming out of the decadal survey and now it's moving forward. It will be the world's premier astronomical survey facility for the next decade and beyond."

LLNL researchers are already gearing up to use the data from LSST. Lab physicist Michael Schneider leads activities at Livermore to understand how well LSST will be able to estimate cosmological parameters using observations of weak gravitational lensing of galaxy images -- the distortion of observed shapes of galaxies due to intervening mass concentrations along the line of sight from the galaxies to the Earth -- which will help determine the properties of dark matter and dark energy in the universe. Livermore researchers also have previously led work to understand how well LSST will be able to estimate cosmological parameters using observations of supernovae.

Research scientists aren't the only ones who will have access to the LSST data. Anyone with a computer will be able to fly through the universe, past objects a hundred million times fainter than can be observed with the unaided eye. The LSST project will provide analysis tools to enable both students and the public to participate in the process of scientific discovery.

The NSF construction budget for LSST is not to exceed $473 million. The DOE camera fabrication budget will be baselined later this year, but is estimated to be $165 million. Operations costs will be around $40 million per year for the 10-year survey. With the approved start, LSST will see first light in 2019 and begin full science operations in 2022. The construction approval culminates more than 10 years of developing, planning and reviewing of the LSST concept.

LSST Director Steven Kahn of Stanford University commented on the unique contributions LSST will make to astronomy and fundamental physics: "The broad range of science enabled by the LSST survey will change our understanding of the dynamic universe on timescales ranging from its earliest moments after the Big Bang to the motions of asteroids in the solar system today. The open nature of our data products means that the public will have the opportunity to share in this exciting adventure along with the scientific community."

The early development of LSST was supported by the LSST Corporation (LSSTC), a non-profit consortium of universities and other research institutions.

LSST project activities are supported through a partnership between the NSF and the Department of Energy. NSF supports LSST through a Cooperative Agreement managed by AURA). The Department of Energy funded effort is managed by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC). Additional LSST funding comes from private donations, grants to universities, and in-kind support from Institutional Members of LSSTC. Learn more about LSST.

Well worth a look if this kind of thing interests you... And it should as knowing what is going on locally is very important in the big picture of surviving in today's world.

A really good read for some truth behind the supposed science....

The incredible shrinking force

Around 2000, a guy named Roger Shawyer claimed he could bounce microwaves inside a fancy-shaped can and get them to  push the can forwards, without anything leaving the can.

This would violate conservation of momentum.  It's like sitting inside a car and making it roll forwards by pushing on the steering wheel.  Standard physics doesn't allow this.  He didn't claim to be using anything other than standard physics.

So: ho hum, just another guy with a really bad idea.  I get emails like this all the time.

But in 2001, his company got a £45,000 grant from the British government to study this idea.  He built his machine and claimed that with 850 watts of power he could get a force of 0.016 newtons.   That's a bit less than the force of gravity from a penny pushing down on your hand.  It could easily be an experimental error.

Why would people want a machine that uses lots of power to create a pathetically feeble force?   Because - here's the great piece of salesmanship - if it existed, you could use it to build a reactionless drive!  If you had a spaceship with huge amounts of power to spare - like, say, a nuclear reactor - you could use this gizmo to push your spaceship forwards without anything spewing out the back end.

Again, this is about as plausible as powering a spaceship by having the crew push on it from the inside.   But if you don't know physics, it sounds very exciting.

The story goes on.  And on.  And on.  It won't die.  In 2012, some Chinese physicists claimed they could get a force of 0.720 newtons from a power of 2,500 watts using some version of Shawyer's device.

And now NASA is studying it!

They're claiming to see a force one thousandth as big as the Chinese - probably because they are doing the experiment one thousand times more accurately.  And still, some people are excited about this.

The new device comes with new improved mumbo-jumbo.  Shawyer claimed that thanks to special relativity, classical electromagnetism can violate conservation of momentum.  I took those courses in college, I know that's bullshit.  Now the NASA scientists say:

"Test results indicate that the RF resonant cavity thruster design, which is unique as an electric propulsion device, is producing a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon and therefore is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma."

This is bullshit too - but now it's grad school bullshit.  "Quantum vacuum virtual plasma" is something you'd say if you failed a course in quantum field theory and then smoked too much weed.  There's no such thing as "virtual plasma".   If you want to report experimental results that seem to violate the known laws of physics, fine.  But it doesn't help your credibility to make up goofy pseudo-explanations.

I expect that in 10 years the device will be using quantum gravity and producing even less force.

For an article written by a severely optimistic blogger, see:

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-07/31/nasa-validates-impossible-space-drive

For the NASA report see:

Unfortunately only the abstract is free here.___A really good read for some truth behind the supposed science....

One of the most identifiable nebulae in the sky, the Horsehead Nebula in Orion, is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud. Also known as Barnard 33, the unusual shape was first discovered on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The red glow originates from hydrogen gas predominantly behind the nebula, ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The darkness of the Horsehead is caused mostly by thick dust, although the lower part of the Horsehead's neck casts a shadow to the left. Streams of gas leaving the nebula are funneled by a strong magnetic field. Bright spots in the Horsehead Nebula's base are young stars just in the process of forming. Light takes about 1,500 years to reach us from the Horsehead Nebula. The above image is a digital combination of images taken in blue, green, red, and hydrogen-alpha light from the Argentina, and an image taken in infrared light by the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.___The universe is just cool....
