Just heard that another dog I'm close to has passed, Nico, very gentle, very sweet dog. Here's the only photo I could find.

The IVMF is sponsoring a research project which intends to understand the relationship between military service (and those who volunteer for military service) and American society, our values, ideals and priorities. This anonymous survey will assist our research and takes approximately 12-15 minutes to complete. Share this survey with your networks and thanks to those who participate! http://ow.ly/m6LKI

Thanks again for sympathies re Holly the dog. I've grown attached to a lot of dogs here in Cole Valley, 19 years, but Holly was my pal.

Tolkien's Dwarves Would Have Been Envious
Several of my all-time favorite travel experiences have been underground tours:
1. The salt mines at Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, near the Austrian border: http://bit.ly/126IhnL The photos here don't do it justice (and I visited it before the days of digital cameras, so I don't have any of my own to share.) It brought to life Tolkien's Mines of Moria - vast underground chambers a kilometer under a mountain, with the remnants of ancient wooden mine works. The images from Tolkien fed the real life experience, and the real life experience clothed the images from Tolkien.
2. The Accelerator at CERN: http://bit.ly/11jAEPC Modern and high-tech rather than ancient and dusty, but also redolent with cultural imagery, this time from James Bond movies. (Was it Thunderball that had a similar setting?)
3. The ... more »

My new post on my site, PressThink, is about two kinds of commitment in political journalism and some lessons for the press in the leak of the NSA story to columnist Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian.
The two kinds are "see? we have no commitments! so trust us!" which I call in this piece politics: none vs. "here's what's happening and here are my convictions" which I call politics:some. My purpose is not to denounce one or praise the other but merely to make the point that both are valid, effective, "traditional," and professional.
Is the distinction helpful? It's supposed to be.
A small window into this issue was provided by Greenwald when he posted the email exchange between a New York Times reporter seeking comment on Greenwald and blogger Andrew Sullivan, who knows Glenn. As you can see by going here http://goo.gl/geJ6S the r... more »

How can journalists and bloggers decide which images, videos and other copyrighted material they can reuse legally under "fair use"? A new guide from American University helps: http://to.pbs.org/11asbdZ
