Enda Cavanagh896The Copper House Gallery will launch my photographic exhibition Duality, from 6-8pm on Wednesday 24th October 2012. Duality is based on a series of large panoramic images celebrating the swimming areas and baths along the Dublin coast. Senator John Crown will open the exhibition. These structures are displayed as evolving and almost living entities with their own personalities: visible connections to our past. I illustrate how these transient structures may be an intrinsic part of the Irish landscape, yet in time become consumed by their surroundings, evoking a fragile beauty that beholds a sense of memory and of place. The exhibition runs at The Copper House Gallery from the 24th October to the 24th November 2012. Admission is free and all are welcome. My photographic exhibition Duality2012-10-24 18:00:008

A new low for LinkedIn   #clickbait   #hoax   #urbanlegends
This silly fake motivational story about the jobless man who applied for the position of office boy at Microsoft has been doing the rounds on e-mail for years. In fact the origins of the story can be traced back to Jewish folklore and Somerset Maugham’s 1929 short story ‘The Verger'. a story about an illiterate church caretaker who is fired by the vicar when his lack of education comes to light. The ousted verger goes on to become a tobacconist, eventually owning a string of shops in London.
http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/bookkeeper.asp#xIuuCxW7LrmgrYpu.99

It’s a cute feel good story but it’s not a true story and it should not be presented as such. It’s a sad day indeed when a professional business network such as LinkedIn promotes viral click bait.

Gap of Dunloe     #Killarney   #RingOfKerry
I missed the Gap on a recent trip to Killarney as the road is extremely narrow and not suitable for cars. Most people take the trip in horse-drawn traps. There are also riding ponies for hire. The trap and ponies are guided by men from families that live in and around the Gap. These pony men use a rotation system called the Turn which determines who takes the next customers. The Turn has been in existence since the 1920s and is passed down in families to the next generation.
(Thanks +pat o'duffy  for braving the road and taking the photo!)

Wifi and Internet access is always bad at large tech conferences, fact  #Wifi   #WebSummit
Paddy Cosgrave, the founder of the Web Summit, which attracted more than 20,000 visitors to Dublin over the last three days, has warned that he may be forced to move the event out of Ireland next year due to a disagreement with the RDS over the provision of wifi at the venue.
Has Paddy been at any event with comparative numbers attending where the wifi worked well for everybody?
There’s an interesting discussion here on why wifi and internet access is always bad at tech conferences http://serverfault.com/questions/72767/why-is-internet-access-and-wi-fi-always-so-terrible-at-large-tech-conferences
Maybe people need to start talking to each other at these events instead of talking to their devices….

I’m absolutely thrilled my +Ireland  page has just passed 10,000 followers. But it has been hard work for a team of 10 of us, sharing and curating content on a daily basis for three years. We’ve got no help from Google, we’re not on any of their suggested user lists or recommendations. We don’t play ‘daily shared circles’, it’s been word of mouth and thanks to all of the mouths! We’ve had Photowalks and we’ve met in real life and we’ve made real friends. That’s what’s worth it and thanks to all of you for following Ireland and all about Ireland on G+.  Sláinte ! #Ireland

“Touristification…an aspect of modern life that treats humans as washing machines, with simplified mechanical responses and a detailed user’s manual.”

If the tourist is the traveler that wants things to be clear, safe and predictable, then his opposite would be the “flâneur”: he who strolls aimlessly, open to randomness and volatility in the journey as he moves forward. What we need is institutions that can provide a “flâneurial” education.

New media trends
For anybody interested in new media, the increase in user generated content, overlaps between the Social and Interest Graphs, this is well worth taking 10 minutes to read. Gideon’s presentation is a clear, concise and very readable overview of the New Media landscape.

A Pattern Language for New Media

28 slides aimed at making sense of some of distinguishing elements of modern media: things like topic, interest, and social graphs, and how they connect to identity, writing and viewing functionality, as well as revenue models.

At the end, you'll find examples like Google+, Google Search, Facebook, LinkedIn, reddit, Huffington Post, and WordPress. I'm sure there will be plenty of differences of opinion and interpretation on these examples, but then that's part of the usefulness of models like this.

A more in-depth analysis, focusing on the critical role of automated, unpaid, end user engagement in media is here (along with a pointer to the SlideShare version of the slides):

A Pattern Language for New Media
For more: http://www.the-vital-edge.com/new-media/

Our new media giants operate powerful, automated platforms that enable end users to contribute all kinds of value around information processing, and with as little employee intervention as possible. Minimizing employee involvement in all these end user contributions lowers costs and improves quality assurance, as does all automation.

But automation also plays another important role in generating scale – the kind of scale needed to engage very large numbers of people.

P.S.
I've pinged a few people who seemed to have expressed interest in these kinds of ideas in the past. I do it rarely, but if you prefer I not at all, please let me know (or if you'd like to be notified in future).

LinkedIn Pulse News Feed on mobile   #LinkedIn   #News
It’s still in beta but I’m really impressed with the updated Pulse News mobile app. There are options to select favourite news media sources, preferred contributors and journalists and areas of interest. More importantly, LinkedIn customise the news feed based on colleagues and connections, what they are publishing, when they are mentioned in the news and what they are sharing.
Twitter have been sending news e mails for a few months now, a bit of a random selection. And very recently Facebook have started sending e mails with ‘top news in your network’. But family and friends are not the people we turn to for news stories.
Interesting to watch the race, LinkedIn is winning in my opinion.

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park
Bunratty Folk Park is a living reconstruction of the homes and environment of Ireland of over a century ago. Set on 26 acres, the park features over 30 buildings in a ‘living’ village and rural setting.
Rural farmhouses, village shops and streets are recreated and furnished as they would have appeared at that time according to their social standing, from the poorest one roomed dwelling to Bunratty House a fine example of a Georgian residence for the gentry built 1804 home of the Studdarts, the last family to occupy Bunratty Castle.
The village houses and shops in the Folk Park have been chosen from many different areas, to form a collection of typical 19th century urban Irish buildings including the School, Doctor’s house, Pawnbrokers, Pub, Drapery, Printworks, Grocery, Hardware shop, Pottery and a Post Office.

The Martello tower in Sandycove is the most famous as James Joyce lived there for a while and the tower made such a dramatic impression that he set the entire first chapter of Ulysses inside it.
“They halted while Haines surveyed the tower and said at last: Rather bleak in winter time I should say, Martello you call it?”
Fear of an invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte reached panic proportions among the authorities in Ireland and England in 1804 and was the reason Martello Towers were built, first in Ireland and then in England. Their purpose was to provide what were, in those days, 'bombproof' towers from which fire could be directed at ships of the hourly expected French invasion fleet.
The name “Martello” derived from the name of a tower at Mortella point in the gulf of Fiorenzo.  The Royalist French along with the Royal Navy, failed to take the tower after attempting to rebel against the Napoleonic French in 1794.  So impressed were the British by the strength of the tower, they suggested that similar towers would be useful in Ireland and England.  However, an error occurred during communication between the sides and the word “Mortella”, was written as “Martello”.
The original Towers from the Napoleonic era are circular in shape, with 2-4 meter thick walls, which were made from solid stone that was all sourced locally. The entrance doorway of the towers are 3.0 metres from the ground which meant at the time access to the entrance was only made by a ladder.  The ladder then could be removed to protect against an invader.
The Towers never fired a cannon in anger, as Napoleon never invaded Ireland or England. However, it is believed that the Towers acted as a deterrent, as Napoleon had every intention of invading England using Ireland as a “back door” bridgehead.

Ireland has apparently over 30,000 castles and many of these were fortified homes for chieftains, or Anglo Norman settlers and were designed primarily for defence.
The seven Dalkey castles were built as fortified residences by wealthy merchants and landowners in the town in order to protect their stock and families from raids by the O’Byrnes and the O’Tooles of the Wicklow Mountains. In 1358 Dalkey rose to prominence after the Dublin Merchants succeeded in an application to the Crown to use the deep and sheltered waters of Dalkey Sound to off- load goods bound for Dublin city.

Goat Castle which is today part of Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre is one of the two remaining castles in Dalkey town. The name was given to it by the Cheevers (‘chevre’ means goat in French) an Anglo-Norman merchant family who were associated with the castle in the 17th century. Archibold’s Castle, on the opposite side of the main street, is the other remaining castle.

“Google is struggling to deal with the sheer volume of demands for it to erase aspects of people’s pasts. Around 70,000 requests for links to be removed have been made in the past month …Articles about a former Merrill Lynch banker, singer Kelly Osborne, a football referee who lied about a controversial penalty, and a “foul-mouthed” former president of the Law Society were among the first tranche of web stories to be removed from search results, it emerged today…
It may be that they’ve decided that it’s simply cheaper to just say yes to all of these requests.”

And who would blame them? What a silly farcical ruling where requests now have to be looked at on an individual case by case basis.

John Banville at the Dalkey Book Festival
I read John’s latest novel The Black Eyed Blonde where Philip Marlowe private investigator is back in action again and absolutely loved it but was curious to know had Banville made Marlowe a more ‘politically correct’ character to suit the 2014 readers. He told me he hadn’t done so deliberately.
It is years and years since I read the original Raymond Chandler novels but I re-read The Big Sleep last week and was a bit shocked to find a rather misogynistic and possibly homophobic Marlowe. For example, the younger me hadn’t noticed snide remarks about slapping women around: “she didn’t mind the slap…Probably all her boyfriends got around to slapping her sooner or later. I could understand how they might.”
I think I prefer Banville’s Marlowe!

What’s happened to the +1???
The +1’s are missing from the stream and have vanished from profiles. This screen grab is from Mr Google Plus and has 1011 reshares and not a single +1.
You have to click on the time stamp to see that  it has in fact got 141 +1’s.

Learn about Water Safety and help save lives
Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death. There are an estimated 359 000 annual drowning deaths worldwide. Learning some life-saving skills, such as CPR and rescue techniques, can help you save a life.

I know many of you don’t live in Dun Laoghaire but raising water safety awareness is an issue all over the world.   In Ireland, on average 140 people drown each year. Irish Water Safety’s volunteers work to reduce this number by teaching basic life saving skills.  If any of you are around Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin this weekend, please drop by, have some fun and learn some essential skills for water safety.

Photos of Ireland in the 1930s: The past is a foreign country
This amazing collection of colourised photographs was taken by an American photographer Branson DeCou (1892-1941) between 1932 and 1935.  DeCou spent nearly thirty years travelling the world and his images of Ireland give us a rare glimpse into a way of life that has long since disappeared.

The right to be forgotten       #Google   #Privacy    #Law

The evolving law in the EU concerning the “right to be forgotten” is problematic not only from the perspective of intermediary liability but also from the perspective of the integrity of the historical record. The CJEU’s embrace of a double standard with respect to the information (i.e., it was permissible for the newspaper to publish it in 1998 but not for Google to link to it in 2014) raises a difficult question about the law’s role in empowering people to sculpt their public information profiles to conform with an image of themselves that they want the world to see
Does damaging public information become private simply by virtue of the passage of time? How stale does information have to be to be considered “irrelevant or no longer relevant”? And what is the standard for measuring relevance? Relevantto what, to whom,... more »

Does damaging public information become private simply by virtue of the passage of time? How stale does information have to be to be considered “irrelevant or no longer relevant”? And what is the standard for measuring relevance? Relevant to what, to whom, or for what purpose?

The slow death of purposeless walking    #Walking   #Creativity
"Your senses are sharpened. As a writer, I also use it as a form of problem solving. I'm far more likely to find a solution by going for a walk than sitting at my desk and 'thinking'
There is something about the pace of walking and the pace of thinking that goes together. Walking requires a certain amount of attention but it leaves great parts of the time open to thinking. I do believe once you get the blood flowing through the brain it does start working more creatively," says Geoff Nicholson, author of The Lost Art of Walking

Queen of the May
'Bring Flowers of the Rarest' is an old traditional hymn and one of my earliest memories of childhood. I associate it with May Day when as young school children we gathered to crown the statue of Our Lady, the Queen of the May.

Let’s hope G+ keeps walking alive     #Google   #lovegoogleplus
I was offline for a few days and came back to read all sorts of rumours and innuendoes about G+ walking dead and all the staff being moved elsewhere. So what are the alternatives?
LinkedIn? The Pulse News feed is quite good but often several days old. The status updates are mainly self-promotions and X has new contacts, Y has been endorsed for new skills and Z is celebrating a birthday.
Twitter? More self-promotions, lots and lots of retweets with little or no comment or discussion let alone analysis.
Facebook? Nice photos of people’s kids and vacations, causes (lots of causes) and do share if you care and you’re not my friend if you don’t share. Oh, and ads and sponsored posts too that you may or may not like….
I’ll stick with the walking dead for the moment!

Bob Hoskins  RIP   #BobHoskins

“I was interested in making a film about the total and absolute gap of understanding between a man and a woman, and would have hung this obsession onto any coat hanger that became available. We commissioned David Leland to write a screenplay, which developed into something else in turn. The project floated in this kind of apsic or limbo for a while until I met Bob Hoskins and suddenly I knew I had found the central character. I rewrote the whole story, with this inarticulate romantic at the center of it, brutal, pitifully simple, with a beautiful heart ”  (Neil Jordan)
