Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671

Jake Kern24,894The Silver DonutBeen wanting to do a circle share for a while, but I just haven't wanted to put in the work to get a group of 100 for another #GoldenDonut. Instead, I grabbed the top 500 from my Google relevancy algorithm. Then I removed a couple people who don't like being in circle shares & some pages so I could stretch the 500 a bit. (For instance, both +Melissa Bagley & +Melissa Ann Bagley Photography would be in the circle--in the top 25, actually--but I just included Melissa's personal profile even though you should circle both.)Many amazing people in here. Thank you for making this corner of the Internet worthwhile.Peace. #SilverDonut  2013-07-13 22:19:3849915023134
Mz Maau10,204I rarely share circles, and I regret to inform, this is not the promised #CircleDirk , rather, it's a circle I've been semi-maintaining since last spring, when it was created for +Pierce Arner to jump-start his Plus experience.Today, I'm resharing the current version on behalf of +Søren Dalsgaard Brath, who, like Pierce, is looking for new content for his stream.I figure he and I probably have a chunk of overlap, so I've added a few extras he might not yet know about. Some notes about the curation of this circle:I've tried to set aside those who have not posted recently, and I've tried to only include those who post publicly, or to extended circles.  I may have missed a few, and if you're in this circle and would like to be permanently removed, please let me know. This is not the final version, as I'm not sure such a thing is possible. This circle DOES come with a warning:You will, most likely, NOT enjoy everyone in this circle.  I, like many, have eclectic tastes, and I'm still a bit gun-shy after seeing some of the explosions from last year's crossing of the streams, so PLEASE, edit this circle to your liking with that in mind.If I ping you, you're in the circle.  There is no expectation or requirement to add this circle, it's merely a courtesy ping.  Again, if you would like to be removed from any future circle shares, please let me know. And yes, I promise, I'm still working on the #CircleDirk .Also note:  This is NOT an indication of who I like best, though some are included in this circle.  It is simply meant to be a sample of the diversity I follow.#PinkAndFluffyPersonsOfQuestionableRepute2013-06-22 16:38:09164143576

Melissa Bryan25,213Circles Everywhere!Over the past couple of days I have been shared in some really awesome circles.  It reminded me how long it's been since I shared one of my own.  And with all the new people around, I figured it might be helpful.  These 200 lovely plussers were chosen by google's magic as being the most relevant to me (minus a few pages and the people who don't use G+).  I went through them and can assure you that these are all top notch characters (well, mostly :p).  They definitely make google+ the amazing place that it is.  Just, be prepared for shenanigans.  If you were notified, you are in the circle.  I don't ever notify, so hopefully you guys don't mind this one.2013-05-18 18:18:01200157597

Seriously questioning whether there's actually any point in continuing to post to G+ at all at this point.

I knew my move to blogging would dramatically drop interest, but it's actually taken it all the way down to 0.

So... kind of a waste of time isn't it?

Ten Classic Sci-Fi Movies To Watch On Netflix

While it's selection of the latest movies is inconsistent at best,  if you're a fan of older science fiction and fantasy movies then Netflix can be quite a treat. What follows is a list of 10 movies that Netflix categorizes as classic scifi. Though their use of the word classic seems... liberal.

Even if you don't have Netflix these are movies that are worth watching should you get the chance. Though in some cases I wouldn't recommend actually buying them.

10 British SciFi Shows You Need To Watch

So you've seen Doctor Who. You know about Torchwood and perhaps Blakes Seven or Space 1999. These are the cornerstones of British telefantasy. But there's a lot more out there and it's worth watching.

TV Review: Supernatural S10E03 - Soul Survivor

Well that was… underwhelming.

I wasn't planning on writing reviews for every episode of this season of Supernatural but this is the third episode in a row that has inspired me to write a review for whatever that's worth. Unfortunately this time out I don't have a much in the way of positives to offer.

Anyone Here On Medium?

I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my Medium account for some time now. I like the look and feel of the interface and the emphasis on longer posts. But, I don’t want to simply replicate my blog there.

It has been suggested that perhaps I could post my fiction to Medium. That certainly give the account a distinct focus. And Medium is a good format for reading fiction in. I’m seriously considering it.

So, do you have an account on Medium? And if so what do you use it for?

Social Media Brings Out The Worst In Us

In which I get on my high horse and tell everyone what they're doing wrong.

There's a song in the musical The Music Man called Pick a Little, Talk A Little. This song reminds me of how people behave on social media. While we talk a big game about effecting social change and broadening our understanding what's actually going on is more like this:

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little,
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more

Currently slowly working through my blog weeding out a lot of old posts.

Which might seem like a weird thing to do but I had over 7,000 posts and many of them were time sensitive. So those are going. Plus I'm trying to focus it a little more on certain types of content so things that don't fit are also going.

So far I've removed about 1,000 posts. This is going to take a while.

Doctor Who Review: S08E09 - Flatline

Oh this was such a good episode. Doctor Who is a juggling act and th best episodes manage to give you humor, fear, action and a big idea all in a single package. It's not easy, but when it works it's great. This worked. Writer Jamie Mathieson came through with a script that was actually even stronger than Mummy On The Orient Express, which is no small achievement...

Tonights episode of Doctor Who was great. As usual I'll have a full review tomorrow. My blog post for today was about more positivity in science fiction stories: http://www.eoghann.com/positivity-bad-thing-project-hieroglyphs-push-positive-science-fiction

And now let's have another photo from the Worldwide Photo Walk 2014. #WWPW2014

Shenandoah Street, Harpers Ferry, WV

I had to fiddle with this shot quite a lot to get the sky to come out.

When I took the photo I bracketed it so I had three different exposures. But none of them really gave the range of shadows I needed so I had to experiment in Adobe Camera RAW with all three of them using the Highlights an Shadows sliders to expand the range as much as possible without getting too much grain.

Positivity Is Not A Bad Thing - Project Hieroglyph's Push For Positive Science Fiction

In the last couple of decades the tone of science fiction has been overwhelmingly pessimistic. There's a cultural notion of late that it's more realistic to portray everything as going wrong and being bad. Because that's what life is.

Except it isn't.

Today's post about 10 British SciFi Shows You Need To Watch (http://www.eoghann.com/5-british-scifi-shows-really-watch)seems to be popular, but don't forget that earlier this week I posted about the Worldwide Photowalk. And here's another photo from that: http://www.eoghann.com/world-wide-photo-walk-2014-harpers-ferry

Where The Shenandoah Meets The Potomac

I take photos from this general area on a regular basis since I take weekly walks there, but I don't think I've shot this exact angle before. Which was clearly a mistake because the tree and the wall frame the shot nicely.

In the distance you can see the bridge across the Potomac and into Maryland. If you look closely at the cliff face on the upper left there's actually the remains of an advert that was painted there in 1906.

Guys meet Tom.

Tom is a serious Doctor Who fan. Tom is currently 9 years old. His blog Project Indigo (which he apparently started when he was 8) covers his adventures as he travels to the many locations where Doctor Who has filmed over the years.

The picture below is Hound Tor in Devon where The Sontaran Experiment was filmed. Tom reached out to me on Twitter to tell me about this after reading a repost of my review of that episode.

Also... he's met the 12th Doctor in person and you haven't. :D

Okay half-way there. I have five of the shows for my article 10 British SciFi Shows You Need To Watch written up.

Wonder if anyone can guess which they are. Some are definitely obscure, some less so. But I've tried to avoid the obvious ones. No Doctor Who and no Blake's 7.

Parents. Do the world a favor.

Before your children reach double digits. Sit them down and explain to them how the world does not revolve around them and their likes or dislikes.

Because the internet is full of people who apparently cannot grasp this concept.

People have been worrying about the death of the short story for a long time. But that is still generally where a lot of aspiring authors start. Perhaps because it’s shorter and therefore easier to complete? Or perhaps because it’s seen as a necessary stepping stone.

But maybe that’s not the right approach as this post by Jason Sanford (who knows a few things on this subject) points out.

Peter F. Hamilton is a writer of epic galaxy spanning space opera science fiction. And all of that is right here on show in Great North Road. But the novel manages the clever trick of also being very down to earth and character focussed.

I will be glad when the press for Neil Gaiman's latest book finally dies down. I like some of his work quite a lot. But the pedestal geeks put him on is immensely tedious.

Much like Neil deGrasse Tyson, everything Gaiman says is quoted and requoted and then put in an image to be posted as though it is of the deepest import and worthy of instant memorization.

So far though I'm expecting to post these:

Positivity Is Not A Bad Thing

Some musings on a movement for more positive science fiction stories and how people are reacting to the idea.

History of Science Fiction Special - Traveller

A sort of spin-off of my chronological history that takes a look specifically at what is probably the definitive science fiction roleplaying game in Traveller. Not only is the game quite interesting, but it's had quite a history jumping from company to company and influencing other things.

Great North Road Book Review

Technically I haven't finished the book yet, but I will in the next couple of days. Doorstop science fiction space opera from Peter F. Hamilton

The Wolves Of West Virginia Part 3

This one needs another re-draft but it will definitely go out next week.

And beyond that I have plans for reviews of Live, Die, Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow and X-Men: Days Of Future Past and another short fiction story. Plus there's whatever might inspire me during the week.

So of the ones that are reasonably fleshed out, which one interests you most? Remember... your vote means very little because I'll probably do whatever I want anyway. It's not like you're paying me for this you know. :D___

What Have You Missed This Week?

No new post on the blog today. I was busy with the Worldwide Photo Walk. I am working on a post about that though and of course there will be a review of the latest episode of Doctor Who tomorrow.

In the mean time, what have you missed this week?

- TV Revew: Arrow S03E01 — The Calm
http://www.eoghann.com/tv-revew-arrow-s03e01-calm

My review of the season 3 premier for Arrow. A strong episode I thought.

- Short Fiction: In The Shadow Of The Eternals
http://www.eoghann.com/short-fiction-shadow-eternals

A thousand word sci-fi story inspired by some great artwork.

http://www.eoghann.com/tv-review-supernatural-season-s10e01-black

The first episode of Supernatural's 10th season was competent but not inspired.

- The Wolves Of West Virginia Part 2: The Missing Girl
http://www.eoghann.com/part-2-missing-girl

The second part of my story The Wolves of West Virginia. The plot thickens etc. Third part should go up some time in the next week.

- Can You Go Home Again? Returning To Twin Peaks
http://www.eoghann.com/can-go-home-returning-twin-peaks

Musings on the announcement that Twin Peaks is returning to tv screens after a quarter of a century and whether it can live up to its own reputation.

- Doctor Who Review: S08E07 — Kill The Moon
http://www.eoghann.com/doctor-review-s08e07-kill-moon

Last week's Doctor Who episode was great I thought. But you have to be willing to ignore the hand wavy bad science.___

TV Revew: Arrow S03E01 - The Calm

Season 3 of Arrow starts with things in a good place for Team Arrow, showing us everyone working together happily and effectively like… well an actual team. This is not normal for this show.

And speaking of not normally Oliver seems almost, happy, for once. Which is completely contrary to the normally sulky individual we are used to. It's all quite refreshing really.

So I'm set to do the World Wide Photowalk again this Saturday.

My batteries are charged. The memory cards have been formatted. Lenses are all nicely cleaned.

And the weather forecast? Well of course it says rain

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That's pretty much been the rule for Supernatural for several seasons now. They throw in a few twists and turns, but fundamentally you know what you're going to get when you sit down to watch an episode…

Seriously questioning whether there's actually any point in continuing to post to G+ at all at this point.

I knew my move to blogging would dramatically drop interest, but it's actually taken it all the way down to 0.

So... kind of a waste of time isn't it?

So I got a code for Amazon's new Write On site where authors can post bits of their work in progress for feedback.

Figured I'd throw up the first part of The Wolves of West Virginia and just see if I got any reaction at all.

Of course I'm already posting that at my site, but in theory at least this would be a place where people are specifically looking to give or receive feedback.

Anyone else using this yet?

For the moment at least I am rather enjoying the longer posts that I'm putting on my blog.

Granted as expected almost no one is reading them, but they have depth to them. I feel they are relatively free of the more emotional and reactionary postings that social networks seem to inspire.

Currently about halfway through the second Designers & Dragons book (the 1980s). There's a load of good information about RPG companies in there, but a couple of patterns are really standing out to me.

1) Many (most) of the companies who went out of business made the same basic mistakes.
2) RPGs have a lifespan.

Reddit is so funny.

There are people downvoting my Doctor Who review link because they didn't like the episode. Not because the review is bad... because I didn't give the right answer. :D

What's that? You need a 1200+ word review of the latest Doctor Who episode? Well it just so happens...

Doctor Who Review: S08E07 - Kill The Moon

Well that was certainly a wild ride.

The episode opens in very familiar territory for this season but we soon find ourselves surrounded by classic horror tropes (flickering lights, flashlights, noises, spider-like creatures). Of course over the years Doctor Who has often borrowed the common elements from movies to sculpt its episodes.

But Kill The Moon isn’t satisfied with just aping one genre. Instead we rapidly transition from horror to epic disaster movies as the whole moon begins to break up around the Doctor and his companions.

Here's What You Missed This Week

So I'm not posting as much as I used to. But I am posting.

What Does Ello Tell Us About Social Networks In 2014?
http://www.eoghann.com/ello-tell-us-social-networks-2014

My thoughts on the state of social networking right now. Hint... I'm not very impressed.

The Messenger

A flash fiction/scene (you worry about the definitions I don't care) piece inspired by some gorgeous artwork.

Book Review: Elantris By Brandon Sanderson

If you enjoy fantasy this one's worth reading. And the book too. ;)

The Case Files Of  Douglas Brodie - The Wolves Of West Virginia -Part 1: A Wizard In West Virginia
http://www.eoghann.com/wizard-west-virginia

It's about time I got back to writing my urban fantasy set in West Viriginia (because all the good locations were taken).  I do all sorts of things authors are not supposed to do in the setup here. I still think it's a fun read.

Back To The Blog (And Away From Social Networks)
http://www.eoghann.com/back-blog-away-social-networks

Why I'm posting less and where all my stuff is. Basically less but longer posts, to my blogged and links on G+, Facebook, Twitter.

The History of Science Fiction Part 10: 1950 – 1959 (Books)
http://www.eoghann.com/history-science-fiction-part-10-1950-1959-books

Another ongoing project of mine that needed to return. I've finally reached the 1950s and boy is there a lot going on in science fiction and fantasy.

TV Review: Doctor Who S08E06 – The Caretaker
http://www.eoghann.com/tv-review-doctor-s08e06-caretaker

Last week's Doctor Who episode didn't sit that well with me (though I seem to be in a minority). I'm hoping for better things with Kill The Moon.___
