I'll be joined by +Lara Setrakian, a journalist whom I've long admired who specializes in Syria. Andrew Beiter, a social studies teacher and a regional education coordinator for the Holocaust Memorial Museum, will also be in the Hangout. Most of all, we'll be joined by all of you--so jump into the conversation on this page and leave us your questions. In particular, with this Hangout we want to involve teachers and students, so spread the word in the schools, please, and student questions are particularly welcome! This kind of online interview is something of an experiment, and we're still figuring out how to make it work best. So we also welcome your suggestions and guidance before and criticisms after.||Syria: Weighing the U.S. Response||2013-09-10 20:00:00||6970|

I had it described to me once with the comment "You get away with so much shit just because you're Evo." True, but the secret therein lies in David's quote. Research examining interference effects shows that auditory input often interferes with processing of visual input in young children (i.e., auditory dominance effect), whereas visual input often interferes with auditory processing in adults (i.e., visual dominance effect). The current study used a cross-modal statistical learning task to examine modality dominance in adults. Participants ably learned auditory and visual statistics when auditory and visual sequences were presented unimodally and when auditory and visual sequences were correlated during training. However, increasing task demands resulted in an important asymmetry: Increased task demands attenuated visual statistical learning, while having no effect on auditory statistical learning. These findings are consistent with auditory dominance effects reported in young children and have important implications for our understanding of how sensory modalities interact while learning the structure of cross-modal information. The Hangout-a-thon will start on June 15 at noon Eastern (GMT – 5). Over the weekend, they will host numerous guests, ranging from scientists who will do science demos, creatives who can unite science and art/music, and researchers who will discuss citizen science and address science education from the perspective of research and metrics. Each segment will be released after the event as a stand-alone YouTube video on the AstrosphereVids channel, thus creating a library of content while raising money for future programs. Planning for this Hangout-a-thon was triggered by the cuts created by sequestration, and by the current White House plans to transition education out of NASA. If the President's current budget is passed, all the funding programs CosmoQuest relies on for will be zeroed (see http://bit.ly/11m5XYg) and the project will be defunded. Rather than accept that fate, CosmoQuest is working to raise the funds needed to keep their programs going, to build new citizen science programs for researchers that don't otherwise have the means to accomplish their projects, and to contract, as they are able, extraordinary people laid off by these cuts at other institutions to keep doing great things through CosmoQuest. (Links to essays on these cuts are listed below). CosmoQuest wants to make sure astronomy education survives and remains strong. While one team, and one telethon can't fix everything, they hope this event can raise awareness, while protected one small corner of astronomy research and education. #hangoutathon||The CosmoQuest 24 Hour Hangout-A-Thon - Main Event Page||2013-06-15 18:00:00||317|

|CosmoQuest||42,904||Join us this week as we talk with Jonathan Roberts about the Space App Hackathon and his winning entry from the New York region. I'll let Jon introduce himself in his own words: "I'm a postdoc physicist at NYU, researching the origin of cosmic rays. I used to make predictions for how we would find dark matter at the Large Hadron Collider when I was a postdoc over in Warsaw. I've been doing more and more data visualisation recently after getting frustrated with how hard it is to get a feeling for lots of science data. I went along to the NASA space apps challenge and was amazed by the number of people willing to put their time in to create tools to open up access to science results. I spent 36 hours coding with people I'd only just met, had a great time, and created a functioning tool that's useful for scientists and the public. I was pretty amazed. We created a site that aggregates data on what telescopes are looking at, and when they're looking. The site plots the observations on the sky so you can see not only where the telescope is looking, but click to find out more, and explore historical images of the target - whether it's a distant galaxy or a supernova remnant in our own Milky Way. You can filter by date, or by target, and you can export the data as plain text - making it useful for scientists as well as the public. And there's a twitter account that will tweet to you when telescopes turn to look at new targets, so you can get tweets from space! Oh, and I also draw maps professionally..." #LearningSpace||Learning Space - Apps for Space!||2013-05-02 01:00:00||94|

|The Planetary Society||5,744,402||The Curiosity rover hit an unexpected snag last week and had to switch over to a backup computer. It's coming out of "Safe Mode" operations later this week, but JPL engineers are still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. We'll talk to +Emily Lakdawalla who's been following the story, about what happened, what it means for Curiosity, and how the team proceeds from here. There is also the small matter of a massive solar storm headed for Mars, which will make Curiosity hunker down for a few days, too. We will also speak to Planetary Radio host +Mat Kaplan before he flies down to Chile for the opening of the new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope. He's been making an audio diary of his trip, and he'll give us the latest on this gorgeous new telescope array that will unlock new secrets of the universe. Finally, we check in with the recent issues regarding NASA's budget, particular for Planetary Science. Sequestration is upon the U.S. government, and the House of Representatives just proposed a new budget to fund the government for the remainder of 2013. We'll talk about where we stand and how this uncertainty is effecting NASA's Planetary Science program. If you can't make the live broadcast, you can submit your questions in advance in the comment thread to this post.||Planetary Society Hangout: What's Going On With Curiosity and a NASA Budget Update||2013-03-07 21:00:00||58|

|NASA||2,637,423||Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.||NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station||2013-02-22 16:30:00||8322|

|NASA||2,637,423||Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future. President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible. At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight. During the event, we'll be joined by: - Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall. - Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks. - John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope. - Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. |KQED SCIENCE||405,105||@100526514195087244555 is hosting a Hangout On Air round table discussion about the proposed expansion of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. While the area will increase by just 1%, it isn't just any small patch of ocean water. It's the busiest, most high-profile section of Northern California's coast, a highway for oil tankers and fishing boats, a recreational haven and a backdrop for millions of photographs -- the waters directly west of the Golden Gate Bridge. "People assume that the water around the Golden Gate is protected. It's not," said Maria Brown, superintendent of the adjacent Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. "That area is of unparalleled beauty. It is an iconic area." But expanding the sanctuary could affect everything from firework shows to whether people can ride Jetskis off the Marin Headlands. What's on the agenda this week? - The @101461771579697778955 is perfect so we'll probably have several views of it - The planets are too low on the horizon, so no luck there - somebody might be able to get @106397393735580644683, though. - The summer constellations are fading, and now the fall constellations are coming up. We should be able to see both, including the Eagle Nebula, Swan Nebula, Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, Ring Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, and more. - If we're lucky, we'll also get a view from the other side of the planet, showcasing a live view of the @116479286515493152582 and its current sunspots. (the image for this week's Event is the Eagle Nebula, captured by @107852824321756704184, and a good example of the kind of stuff we'll see) You don't need any special technology to enjoy our star parties. Just join this event, and then you'll get a notification when we go live. Then you'll be able to ask us questions, request objects, and generally learn about astronomy and astrophotography as a hobby. See you on Sunday!||Virtual Star Party - August 26, 2012||2012-08-27 05:30:00||120|

I have bad news. I got duped by this kid. It's been revealed as a political hoax by model number. This clock device has also been used in previous terrorist bomb making by the JDL.
This gives Donal Trump a lot of political leverage at a very curious time since Obama said "cool clock" about circuits used in bombmaking.
I've added a caveat:

Just before death, John Nash "thought he had a better model" for Einstein's General Relativity, proposed change. Nash used to talk with Einstein in the 50s.
Why did we lose this? Because we're still so very stupid about allowing so many auto-related deaths every year.
This appears to be John Nash's GR tweak.

Not sure if this is accurate but it would not be at all surprising if it's authentic.

Both Adam Lanza and Chris Harper-Mercer were angry at an imaginary God. They hated that their "God" made them awkward and unloved by girls.
There were both virgins. And they were both provided guns by overprotective mothers who knew they had mental issues.
+Barack Obama failed. The problem is parental rights and bad parents who will always be able to buy guns despite restrictions on individuals.
There is a selfish aversion to call out parental rights because we think we'll be implicated for the actions of our children.

Important caveat for Ahmed's clock
The addition of a wire to a metal latch connected to a metal case could be used to trigger a clock circuit. The impedance of electrical current through a circuit can be detected when a human touches the metal. This could potentially stop/start the clock or the timer functions.
This would be a "neat" hack or "invention" if it were not for the obvious applications, or being revealed on or close to 9-11 using a commercial Micronta circuit used in previous bombmaking.
1. The latch wire was useful and a real invention.
2. The latch wire was useless & part a hoax bomb.
In general, we should want kids smart enough to make bomb triggers, yet mature enough not to be inspired by religion to kill.

Tip of a hat
When & how does an event horizon start to form?

Hawking: there is no spoon
"...information never actually enters into black holes, instead staying on their inner-most boundary called the 'event horizon.'"
This would also apply to virtual micro black holes. The only way to recover holographic information from black hole evaporation is to have total knowledge of the gravitational potential for the universe. This is not practical for localized observers stuck inside the system. But in principle, it means that information preservation from black hole evaporation maintains a form of practically in-determinant determinism.

A Moon Shot
In Iowa, +Bernie Sanders just announced legislative plans for tuition-free universities and colleges. I've been calling for this since before Goolge's Project 100 and Khan Academy.
It's nice to finally see a politician propose something substantial.

If you isolate something, space-time curvature observes wave function. Conversely, gravity emerges from collapse.

Parental rights strikes again. The 13yr girl that posted this committed suicide following her father forced/shamed her to cut hair off after getting "messed up."
As a kid, I was always alone. My parents divorced when I was very young & I went to more schools than I can remember as I bounced around. Some people can deal with loneliness and others cannot. Even now I have very few real friends.
It would be especially hard if you had an asshole father who forced you to cut your hair off.
