Nicholas Kristof1,309,252The issue of the moment is Syria, so I'm delighted to host a Google+ hangout in which we'll be able to pose questions to Secretary of State John Kerry about Syria policy. I'll be joined by +Lara Setrakian, a journalist whom I've long admired who specializes in Syria. Andrew Beiter, a social studies  teacher and a regional education coordinator for the Holocaust Memorial Museum, will also be in the Hangout. Most of all, we'll be joined by all of you--so jump into the conversation on this page and leave us your questions. In particular, with this Hangout we want to involve teachers and students, so spread the word in the schools, please, and student questions are particularly welcome! This kind of online interview is something of an experiment, and we're still figuring out how to make it work best. So we also welcome your suggestions and guidance before and criticisms after. Syria: Weighing the U.S. Response2013-09-10 20:00:007027G+
Evo Terra690,579Oops! I had this set to a week in the future. Sorry! It's really on the 18th!As it turns out, for any plan to work, every team needs at least one asshole who doesn't give a shit if he or she gets fired or exiled or excommunicated. - David McRaneyIt's no secret that I pride myself on being an asshole. I had it described to me once with the comment "You get away with so much shit just because you're Evo." True, but the secret therein lies in David's quote. On Sunday, I'll share a few more secrets on how you can become a likable asshole just like me!About Show Up SundaysFor me, Sunday is part work, part relaxation, and part planning for the week ahead. I start early -- or rather I should -- to get the jump on the day.Care to join me? Each week I'll choose a different theme, talk about that for a bit, and then answer questions you submit during the show. Science on Google+366,447Posterside Hangouts is a new Hangouts On Air, which is hosted by the Science on Google+ Community (http://goo.gl/uhJCN). The main goal of this HOA series is to recreate a poster session-like atmosphere here on G+, so researchers can present their recent findings. Presentations will be grouped by discipline and individual presentations will last approximately 10 – 15 minutes.Do you have a recent conference presentation, manuscript, or book that you would like to share with the Google+ community? Do you want to give your undergraduate or graduate students practice presenting their research? If yes, then let us know by filling out this short form: http://goo.gl/e0KPhE.================================Psychology Talks for Posterside Hangouts #1, Authors (Affiliations)When audition dominates vision: Evidence from cross-modal statistical learning+Chris Robinson (The Ohio State University at Newark)Automatic selection of eye tracking variables in visual categorization for adults and infants+Samuel Rivera (The Ohio State University at Columbus)Foreign accent does not influence cognitive judgments+Andre L. Research examining interference effects shows that auditory input often interferes with processing of visual input in young children (i.e., auditory dominance effect), whereas visual input often interferes with auditory processing in adults (i.e., visual dominance effect). The current study used a cross-modal statistical learning task to examine modality dominance in adults. Participants ably learned auditory and visual statistics when auditory and visual sequences were presented unimodally and when auditory and visual sequences were correlated during training. However, increasing task demands resulted in an important asymmetry: Increased task demands attenuated visual statistical learning, while having no effect on auditory statistical learning. These findings are consistent with auditory dominance effects reported in young children and have important implications for our understanding of how sensory modalities interact while learning the structure of cross-modal informationScience on Google+ Posterside Hangouts #12013-08-13 02:30:0099G+

Each segment will be released after the event as a stand-alone YouTube video on the AstrosphereVids channel, thus creating a library of content while raising money for future programs. Planning for this Hangout-a-thon was triggered by the cuts created by sequestration, and by the current White House plans to transition education out of NASA. If the President's current budget is passed, all the funding programs CosmoQuest relies on for will be zeroed (see http://bit.ly/11m5XYg) and the project will be defunded. Rather than accept that fate, CosmoQuest is working to raise the funds needed to keep their programs going, to build new citizen science programs for researchers that don't otherwise have the mThe CosmoQuest 24 Hour Hangout-A-Thon - Main Event Page2013-06-15 18:00:00320G+

CosmoQuest41,833Join us this week as we talk with Jonathan Roberts about the Space App Hackathon and his winning entry from the New York region. I'll let Jon introduce himself in his own words:"I'm a postdoc physicist at NYU, researching the origin of cosmic rays. I used to make predictions for how we would find dark matter at the Large Hadron Collider when I was a postdoc over in Warsaw. I've been doing more and more data visualisation recently after getting frustrated with how hard it is to get a feeling for lots of science data.I went along to the NASA space apps challenge and was amazed by the number of people willing to put their time in to create tools to open up access to science results. I spent 36 hours coding with people I'd only just met, had a great time, and created a functioning tool that's useful for scientists and the public. I was pretty amazed. We created a site that aggregates data on what telescopes are looking at, and when they're looking. The site plots the observations on the sky so you can see not only where the telescope is looking, but click to find out more, and explore historical images of the target - whether it's a distant galaxy or a supernova remnant in our own Milky Way. You can filter by date, or by target, and you can export the data as plain text - making it useful for scientists as well as the public. And there's a twitter account that will tweet to you when telescopes turn to look at new targets, so you can get tweets from space!Oh, and I also draw maps professionally..."#LearningSpace  Learning Space - Apps for Space!2013-05-02 01:00:0095G+

NASA1,421,272Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future. President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible. At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight.During the event, we'll be joined by:- Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall.- Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks.- John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope.- Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. To join the event, visit http://plus.google.com/+NASA at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Ask your questions of the group in the comments below or using hashtag #askNASA :50 Years Later: NASA Discusses Using Innovation and Ingenuity to do Big Things2012-09-12 21:00:00652G+
KQED SCIENCE221,753+KQED SCIENCE is hosting a Hangout On Air round table discussion about the proposed expansion of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. While the area will increase by just 1%, it isn't just any small patch of ocean water. It's the busiest, most high-profile section of Northern California's coast, a highway for oil tankers and fishing boats, a recreational haven and a backdrop for millions of photographs -- the waters directly west of the Golden Gate Bridge. "People assume that the water around the Golden Gate is protected. It's not," said Maria Brown, superintendent of the adjacent Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. "That area is of unparalleled beauty. It is an iconic area." But expanding the sanctuary could affect everything from firework shows to whether people can ride Jetskis off the Marin Headlands. We'll touch on all of these issues in our discussion.Learn more here: http://goo.gl/1JvnYYou'll be able to watch the Hangout On Air here on our Event page. Morons want to secure crash site by fighting rebels for it. Genius. Candy Crowley wants Ukraine to "push" rebels away by using mortars? That won't hurt the evidence at all.

This is just an excuse to further critique rebels by saying people can't get to the site.

Ukraine may be violating UN resolution 2166

"Ukrainian security officials have said that it was their intention to take over the site militarily," Churkin told a news conference at UN headquarters in New York.

"That of course would amount to a direct violation of Resolution 2166."

The Perils of Bankrupting the Enemy

The slope of a strategy to bring opposition "to it's senses" isn't far away from "strangulation." Often times, as with the Japanese, there is no easy way for that opponent to save face.

For the Japanese to come to "it's senses," it took a world war & several nuclear bombs.

Curious scorch marks

US State/DNI call out does not align very well. Suggests that they rotated it a bit more counter-clockwise for unknown reason. It's also unclear precisely where this call out is from because there isn't enough information to place it along the line of trees.

Once accurately placed, one would be able to tell if the angle of the scorch marks align with the suspected target.  This suggests that the rotation of the callout could have been to make it seem to align more with the target.

When I rotate and guess as to it's location, the alignment of the scorch marks does appear to align with the suspected target. However, I cannot be sure of accurate placement and scale because the call out doesn't have enough information.

This is the supposed location of the scorch marks and rocket impacts.

Note that the US State/DNI image is rotated -90 degrees left.  The border here actually runs east and west, meaning that if this was a rocket launch, the Russians launched northeast around 58deg for 13.68 km.

However, this image appears in a document that was indexed on the 23rd, contradicting the 25/26th date estimate for these marks. The craters are also very hard to see.

NPR's Scott Neuman published this on the 24th.

As we reported earlier this week, the U.S. has said it has "new evidence" that Russian forces were lobbing artillery across the border and that Moscow was planning to ship powerful multiple rocket launcher systems to the pro-Russian separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine.

This links to an article on the 24th as well:

The 22nd-23rd of July when it was announced that the US would send Pentagon advisers to Ukraine.  Therefore, it seems plausible that it may have been planned ahead of time that they would instruct Ukraine's military on how to advance/circle towards the #MH17   location as early as the 22nd or 23rd.

Hence, the NPR document about the Russian shelling is indexed on the 23rd with references to images supposedly from 26/27th, when the press release was to be made by the State Department Ambassador to Ukraine on Twitter.

If true, this shows that the Russian cross-border shelling is a fabrication meant to be released prior to military actions they knew Ukraine would be getting ready to do.

What is Ukraine hiding?

The release of US "images" of Russians "shelling/rocketing" (they can't seem to get it straight) Ukrainian positions over the border is a coordinated release of what is probably faked images.  This occurred a day or two before Ukraine started shelling rebel positions in towns around the crash site.

Therefore, if people are flooded with the idea that "US says" Russia is "shelling" Ukraine positions, followed by hearing that there is shelling around the crash sit a day or two later, they will naturally think that this shelling is the fault of Russia and/or the separatists when in fact it is a provocation by Ukraine that results in the destruction, injuries, and deaths of local villagers to live in the area. These people are also potential witnesses to recent Ukrainian air activity such as low overflights.more »

The variation of mitochondrial DNA between different people can be used to estimate the time back to a common ancestor, such as Mitochondrial Eve. This works because, along any particular line of descent, mitochondrial DNA accumulates mutations at the rate of approximately one every 3,500 years per nucleotide.

Mitochondrial Eve is the most recent common matrilineal ancestor, not the most recent common ancestor. Since the mtDNA is inherited maternally and recombination is either rare or absent, it is relatively easy to track the ancestry of the lineages back to a [ matrilineal most recent common ancestor] MRCA; however, this MRCA is valid only when discussing mitochondrial DNA.

Mitochondrial Eve lived later than Homo heidelbergensis and the emergence of Homo neanderthalensis, but earlier than the out of Africa migration.

"To test the hypothesis that mitochondrial variation contributes to Parkinson disease expression, van der Walt et al. (2003) genotyped 10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms that define the European mitochondrial DNA haplogroups in 609 white patients with Parkinson disease and 340 unaffected white control subjects. Overall, individuals classified as haplogroup J (odds ratio = 0.55; 95% CI 0.34-0.91; p = 0.02) or K (odds ratio = 0.52; 95% CI 0.30-0.90; p = 0.02) demonstrated a significant decrease in risk of Parkinson disease versus individuals carrying the most common haplogroup H. Furthermore, a specific SNP that defines these 2 haplogroups, 10398G (516002.0002), is strongly associated with this protective effect (odds ratio = 0.53; 95% CI 0.39-0.73; p = 0.0001). Indirect != direct

This potential autism link to dysfunctional mitochondria in the context of vaccines is not served well by the misconception that this is a direct connection between the autistic child and the given vaccine.  This is a direct result of a fraudulent paper connecting a vaccine directly to autism.

Since mitochondria is inherited only from the mothers, and since autism more often than not appears in boys, it's surprising that they're not considering the affect of 50-70 years of vaccines on non-autistic mothers and their non-autistic daughters such that there is no mtRNA feedback from ADS males while their child-bearing sisters carry on the suspect mtRNA.

If there are mitochondrial defects causing a rapid increase in ASD, these defects are being passed on maternally, mother to daughter, with no male input because ASD tends not to show in females... more »

84% of affected bird populations are composed of chicken and farm birds, while the 15% is madeup of wild birds according to capture-and-release operations in the 2000s, during the SARs pandemic. The first deadly Canadian case was confirmed on January 3, 2014.

This is interesting because in order to produce a vaccine for H5N1/A H1N1/A, we typically need billions of chicken eggs.

H5N1 has killed millions of poultry in a growing number of countries throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa. Health experts are concerned that the coexistence of human flu viruses and avian flu viruses (especially H5N1) will provide an opportunity for genetic material to be exchanged between species-specific viruses, possibly creating a new virulent influenza strain that is easily transmissible and lethal to humans. The mortality rate for humans with H5N1 is 60%.

Today, L0 is restricted to African populations, whereas L1 is the ancestral haplogroup of all non-Africans, as well as most Africans. Mitochondrial Eve's sequence can be approximated by comparing a sequence from L0 with a sequence from L1. By reconciling the mutations in L0 and L1. The mtDNA sequences of contemporary human populations will generally differ from Mitochondrial Eve's sequence by about 50 mutations.

In genetics, paternal mtDNA transmission and paternal mtDNA inheritance refer to the incidence of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) being passed from a father to his offspring. Paternal mtDNA inheritance is observed in a small proportion of species; in general, mtDNA is passed unchanged from a mother to her offspring, making it an example of non-Mendelian inheritance. In contrast, mtDNA transmission from both parents occurs regularly in certain bivalves.

In human mitochondrial genetics, there is debate over whether or not paternal mtDNA transmission is possible. Many studies hold that paternal mtDNA is never transmitted to offspring. This thought is central to mtDNA genealogical DNA testing and to the theory of mitochondrial Eve. The fact that mitochondrial DNA is maternally inherited enables researchers to trace maternal lineage far back in time.

Since the father's mtDNA is located in the... more »

SIRP-Alpha is a protein that is found on the surface of various cells throughout the body. It helps normal cells tell the immune system not to attack, and previous research has shown that they are involved in a neuron’s ability to form a presynaptic nerve terminal, which is an extension of the cell that reaches out towards a neighboring cell and can send the chemical signals brain cells use to communicate with one another.

They found that when a brain cell receives signals from a neighboring cell across a synapse it releases SIRP-alpha into the space between the cells. Two molecules within the cell, CaMK and MMP, act like scissors that cut the SIRP-alpha protein in half so it can float to other cells. The SIRP-alpha protein attaches to a #CD47 receptor on the other cell. When this binding occurs, a message is sent to the first cell indicating that the signal was received and that the synapse isa... more »

CD47 is a 50 kDa membrane receptor that has extracellular N-terminal IgV domain, five transmembrane domains, and a short C-terminal intracellular tail. There are four alternatively spliced isoforms of CD47 that differ only in the length of their cytoplasmic tail.

Form 2 is the most widely expressed form that is found in all circulating and immune cells. The second most abundant isoform is form 4, which is predominantly expressed in the brain and in the peripheral nervous system. Only keratinocytes expressed significant amounts of form 1. Little is known about the functional significance of this alternative splicing. However, these isoforms are highly conserved between mouse and man, suggesting an important role for the cytoplasmic domains in CD47 function.

Binding of TSP-1 to CD47 influences several fundamental cellular functions including cell migration and adhesion, cell... more »

Nrf1 functions as a transcription factor that activates the expression of some key metabolic genes regulating cellular growth and nuclear genes required for mitochondrial respiration, and mitochondrial DNA transcription and replication. Nrf1, together with Nrf2, mediates the biogenomic coordination between nuclear and mitochondrial genomes by directly regulating the expression of several nuclear-encoded ETC proteins, and indirectly regulating the three mitochondrial-encoded COX subunit genes by activating mtTFA, mtTFB1, and mtTFB2. The Nrf proteins are also important for the upregulation of antioxidant and xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes during oxidative stress.

Nrf1 is also involved in heme biosynthesis through regulation of globin gene expression. The protein has also been associated with the regulation of neurite outgrowth.

In one theory, meiosis is primarily an adaptation for repairing DNA damage. Environmental stresses often lead to oxidative stress within the cell, which is well known to cause DNA damage through the production of reactive forms of oxygen, known as reactive oxygen species (ROS). DNA damages, if not repaired, can kill a cell by blocking DNA replication, or transcription of essential genes.

When only one strand of the DNA is damaged, the lost information (nucleotide sequence) can ordinarily be recovered by repair processes that remove the damaged sequence and fill the resulting gap by copying from the opposite intact strand of the double helix. However, ROS also cause a type of damage that is difficult to repair, referred to as double-strand damage. One common example of double-strand damage is the double-strand break. In this case, genetic information (nucleotide sequence) is lost... more »

The female ovum originate from a single primary oocyte via oogensis which is a form of gametogenesis, a biological process by which diploid or haploid precursor cells undergo cell division and differentiation to form mature haploid gametes.

The process of ooctyogenesis, wherein oogonia are developed, occurs via the transformation of primordial follicles into primary ooctyes. [Human] ooctogensis is complete either before or shortly after birth.

It is commonly believed that, when oocytogenesis is complete, no additional primary oocytes are created, in contrast to the male process of spermatogenesis, where gametocytes are continuously created. In other words, primary oocytes reach their maximum development at ~20 weeks of gestational age, when approximately seven million primary oocytes have been created; however, at birth, this number has already been reduced to approximately... more »

A unique form of life on Earth is the intracellular cnidarian parasite

This is the type of stuff I imagine being on Europa.

In addition, there exists a weird cnidarian parasite, Polypodium hydriforme, which lives inside its host's cells. It is sometimes placed in the Hydrozoa, but actually its relationships are better treated as unresolved for the time being—a somewhat controversial 18S rRNA sequence analysis found it to be closer to Myxozoa. It was traditionally placed in its own class Polypodiozoa and this view is presently often seen to reflect the uncertainties surrounding this highly distinct animal.

+Google+ Help

Why is Google+ recommending me to add 99+ people in a never ending list? And, why is Google+ expecting me to actually click through and select all these suggestions to individual circles, as if I would actually take the time to do this?

Is this a joke?

Doesn't Google+ already know that I don't really know any of these people? This is the worse suggestion in the world.  And why doesn't Google+ let me easily mark them all as people I don't really know?

If they're people I might like to get to know, why not let me multi/bulk add them to a new circle?  Or, are circles still the older son that doesn't get as much love?

+Larry Page, can't Google hire at least one person on the Google+ user experience team that has some common sense?  Or is Google+ on it's way out?

A Mystery in the Emergency Room: Mitochondria and the Inflammatory Response

Scientists have now discovered that the innate immune system uses [pattern-recognition receptors] PRRs as "microbial sensors" to detect a set of evolutionarily conserved molecules found in a variety of pathogens. These molecules are collectively known as pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), and they are expressed in a wide variety of microorganisms, including those that do not cause disease. In patients with severe infections such as sepsis, PAMPs are the major external "stimulators" of the inflammatory response
