Lost Camera: UPDATE #1:  I used other pictures in the camera and found further evidence of the exact house the photo was taken.  It's a bit scary what you can find out with the internet these days, but I'm sure these guys would rather want their camera back -- especially with the kind of photos on there.  I will be writing to them and keeping you guys updated on what happens.  Stay tuned...

The camera unfortunately never got redeemed on "lost and found" from Carnival Cruise, which makes me believe either the owners never called in or Carnival gets overwhelmed with stuff like this.  Since then it's been sitting in one of my drawers, unused, and I have no use for it whatsoever.

I decided to give this a secondchanc... more »

*I need your help on a new social app project!*

Hi Everyone, I’m working hard on putting together a new social app that I think you’ll really like. I’m in the process of building a prototype and researching behavior trends to better understand my audience (i.e. users like you), and I really need as big of a sample as possible to form my data in order to better mold the experience.

If you could help me by taking about 5 minutes of your time to fill out the survey below as honestly as you can, it would help me tremendously.

Manipulating SVG Icons with CSS

I keep forgetting that SVG can also be styled - and the results can be pretty darn amazing (check out http://bit.ly/17hw9Ei).

Mostly of us use SVG icons for projects these days and then just do simple opacity transforms to for example indicate button states or something similar. But SVG and CSS can do so much more - +PJ Onori has an awesome series of articles out (http://bit.ly/1apDST8) on smarter contextual icons and styling SVG.

Highly recommended reading!

Finally looking forward to start developing :)

Hi Everyone!

A few months ago we told you about the Mirror API. It's how you develop Glassware, which is what we're calling Glass services. We know a lot of you are eager to learn more about it, and I have some great news. Today we're releasing the API documentation and a bunch of example code, so even though the API is in a limited developer preview, you can start dreaming with us.

We look forward to hearing your feedback about this look into the Mirror API.___Finally looking forward to start developing :)

What's the trick for rendering pages in <1 second on mobile?

Answer: One request. Inline. Defer the rest. Majority of the 1s budget is consumed by network latency, which means that we must aggressively inline critical CSS and defer all unnecessary JavaScript.

Facebook is once again pushing the limits of your privacy... but that's not their fault.

Today's newly announced Facebook Home is very intuitive and a great move for Facebook, but like most cases it's a risky asset for users.

Underneath the slick UI, there is a ton of information collected on how you use your phone, and with the pipelining of your SMS messaging through their messaging app it provides them even more opportunity to monitor your communication activity.

Some of the ways FB benefits with this data is their expansion on their mobile and platform marketshare with non-FB users.  They can use the information collected to innovate further and optimize their software so that you get the best experience-- however, the crevice that comes with this is your privacy.

If Facebook hadn't pushed the limits of privacy, then they wouldn't be where they are now.  If they hold back on collecting user data, the platform would not be as rich as it is today.  Innovation would not have sparked as fast as it is now.  Competitors would have been granted opportunities to swoop your data if Facebook wouldn't.  But why would it be their fault?

We chose to share content.  We chose to identify people by tagging them.  We chose to post silly statuses about ourselves... and heck, we chose to post chain messages on privacy and demonstrating ignorance with the lamest "solution" to solve it (truth be told: it doesn't!).

This is a social platform where people interactions are based entirely on this platform, and by posting on here you're the one granting them permission to use your information.  Always remember before you post: Privacy does not exist on the internet.

4) The husband is likely a subscriber to +Planet Fitness, since we see him wearing a shirt in one of the photos.
5) No other photos show any clues or any contextual information... maybe Sherlock Holmes would suggest otherwise.  I've attached enough photos to clearly identify those who lost the camera.

I decided to give this a second chance and find any clues... there are hundreds of pictures on this camera, but not one picture tells me whether they live within or outside the United States... except one.

The picture of this couple are standing on a patio.  Behind them are three identifiable buildings: Doubletree, Chase, and Wells Fargo.  I spent a good 10 minutes on Google finding these buildings, but it doesn't seem to be easy.  *If I can target where the those three buildings are, I might actually trace the area where the camera owners might live.*___

Very comprehensive, and shows you some cool tricks on AngularJS.  I've been tinkering around with this framework for quite some time and it's pretty neat, though I think it takes some time to get used to.

What's your experience with AngularJS so far?

Another excellent and rather deep article on some of Angular's features at http://www.yearofmoo.com/2012/10/more-angularjs-magic-to-supercharge-your-webapp.html___Very comprehensive, and shows you some cool tricks on AngularJS.  I've been tinkering around with this framework for quite some time and it's pretty neat, though I think it takes some time to get used to.

Something worth looking into for any JavaScript developers out there!

Check this out, super set to JavaScript that brings the optional Static Typing, Classes, and Modules. Can be used in server side (with Node.js) and client side.

1) You start in JavaScript and you end in JavaScript, unlike Coffee Script and Dart.
2) It doesn't produce bloat of JS when compiled like how others do it.
3) You can use classes, types, modules for large code bases
4) You can use any library like Backbone.js, jQuery, Angular.js
5) Rich tooling experiences, auto complete, intellisence, there is a plugin for Visual Studio 2012 Express+ for it.

You can code in JavaScript like how you always have done, and just use some TypeScript when you want to, at the end, the code is optimized.

What do you all think about this? Here are some samples, http://www.typescriptlang.org/Samples/ and it is Open Sourced under Apache 2.

Personally, if it is just a superset of JavaScript EC5 (JavaScript tests have to pass 100%), not a new language, adds features to help big projects develop faster with optional typing, and modules! It can't go wrong can it?

The creator of it did a video talking about it and CoffeeScript/Dart/Closure http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/Anders-Hejlsberg-Introducing-TypeScript Some nice discussion over there.___Something worth looking into for any JavaScript developers out there!

There are cool new changes made on +My Hangouts just released today, including the new sleeker design we've been working on.  We've also given you the ability to now preview your captured moments straight from the drop down without having to launch the gallery!

Feel free to contribute on the open source project through GitHub: http://goo.gl/1QFec

Just released v5.5 for +My Hangouts with a sleek new design!

I wanted to release this version for a very long time, but I was pretty busy. This version has a sleek new UX, and uses an updated Unofficial Google+ API, and critical optimizations for mapping and perf updates.

Force the update to version 5.5.0: http://goo.gl/iEsmF
Download from the gallery: http://goo.gl/L8Znm
Source Code on GitHub: http://goo.gl/1QFec
*Unofficial Google Plus API:* http://goo.gl/KqPoq

I am sorry I haven't been updating my open source projects, moving is difficult, and my new job is pretty addicting and fun, I get to hack on awesome web projects all day and night! But I didn't forget you guys! So enjoy :) If you like it, don't forget to rate it in the extension gallery!

Remember, this is open source, so if you would like to help out, please let me know! Thanks to +Rayan Bouajram for the new User Experience, and +Tzafrir Rehan from +Do Share for continuous contributions for the Unofficial Google+ API (He was recently granted committer writes, yay)!___There are cool new changes made on +My Hangouts just released today, including the new sleeker design we've been working on.  We've also given you the ability to now preview your captured moments straight from the drop down without having to launch the gallery!

Although the points in this article are strikingly similar to the techniques introduced in "Subject to Change", I've seen UX designers make cool looking things, but completely miss the point in what makes a design usable.

If an innovative design has no connection to solving a problem from other familiar designs, it shouldn't be used :)

There's a niche that needs to be filled, and this is it!

It's Time For Something Different

I hate the entire job search process.  Don't you? Putting together a resume that will get noticed is too difficult.  Searching through job banks takes too much time.  Putting your resume out on current job sites results in too much SPAM or worse bad job leads.  Because the best engineers usually have an OK job, this leads to inertia.

You may think that this is just what it takes to find a job but that doesn't make any sense.  Ask any growing tech company and they will tell you they are desperate for the right talent.  If good engineering talent is in so much demand, why do engineers have to go through this tedious job search process?

They don't.  Having been both an engineer and a hiring manager, I got fed up with the whole situation.  So I decided to do something about it.  That's why today, I'm proud to announce persway.me  It's designed to take the pain out of the hiring process and give everybody exactly what they want.

Great engineers get to hear about the right job opportunities without the painful job search process or the fear of receiving too much junk.  Less noise, better jobs.  Companies can spend less time scouring mountains for resumes for people who don't have the right qualifications and spend more time focused on trying to get the better engineers to join.  Quality not quantity.

For the next five days we want to celebrate our public unveiling.  For job seekers, we will be giving out 100 invites to the site (the site is and will remain invite only).   For those with job openings, we will be giving away five free job listings.  Sign up is simple and takes under 3 minutes after you are accepted.

If you work in a technical field, sign up here - persway.me/beta
If you hire technical people, sign up here - persway.me/hire
If you like the idea or you just like me, share this post.    :)___There's a niche that needs to be filled, and this is it!

The Kaloud Lotus is an amazing product that will change the way you enjoy your hookah.

I had the privilege of testing +Kaloud Interact's newest invention, and I can say you won't be able to smoke without it!  It's cleaner, it lasts longer, it's easier to maintain.

Kaloud Lotus™ is a Heat Management Device that was designed and engineered to regulate the transfer of heat from charcoal to Shisha.  Kaloud Lotus™ also works to significantly reduce the ash, ultra-fine particles, and volatile gasses that pass from charcoal into Shisha.  In doing so, Kaloud Lotus™ makes the clouds produced by the Shisha noticeably smoother, cleaner, and flavorful, while also considerably extending the life of a Hookah session.

Luckily the company is allowing preorders at a significant discount.  You can visit Kaloud here for more details or if you want to place anorder:

Within a year or two, regular cars will start coming on the market with an "auto-pilot" feature; it will work like cruise control, but take total control of the vehicle. The "driver" will be able to sit there and read a magazine on the freeway.

The major car companies -- including Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Ford, GM, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Volvo -- all have advanced self-driving car projects in the works, as does Google, many universities and even the Pentagon.
