Lotus Carroll1,774,490This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Multiplicity. What this means is create a self portrait where you appear in the image multiple times (2 or more, your choice). Get creative and think up an interesting scene you can use this effect on and then make your image. Here is where you enter your ONE Multiplicity Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* There are several different ways to go about achieving this effect. In camera, you can use a long exposure and move around. Alternately, you can use post processing to create multiples in an image. Art through the Apeture Photography11,279There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00300

Lotus Carroll1,774,490This is the Event for our November Self Portrait Challenge: *Cinematic*. What this means is let your images be inspired by the look and feel of moving films, cinema, movies! Basically, they'll look like stills taken from a movie - drama, mystery, and action are all great genres to focus on. Location, lighting and angles will play key roles in your imagery, as well as your post processing technique for color, cropping, and more. Here is where you enter your ONE Cinematic Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST November 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* Like most things, there are many ways to achieve this kind of look (just as there are many styles of cinema!), so find a style that suits you and work with it. This @111480916026711337375 article has some interesting information that you might enjoy: http://goo.gl/KhWR79   A good thing to remember when creating your image is that _movies tell stories_. As such, the story being told by your photo will have a huge impact on how "good" the finished product is - does your one image effectively pack the punch to tell a story? I think that the greatest cinematic images have great scene, lighting, angles, post processing (color, cropping, etc) and ALSO have been set-up such that they tell a story with impact. Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want. http://youtu.be/VYmFpYdwqLsYou are Beautiful2014-02-21 04:00:0047

First Friday Art Walk660,262The May #FirstFridayArtWalk  is here! It is open to all. Whether you are an artist, or simply an art lover, there is a way for each and every one of us, who wishes to, to participate.  The May First Friday Art Walk will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013.  San Francisco (PDT): From 6 a.m. Friday, May 3 to 12 a.m. Saturday, May 4. New York (EDT): From 9 a.m. May 5 to 3 a.m. Saturday, May 4. Paris (CET): From 2 p.m. Friday,  May 5 to 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4. See starting and end times for your local time zone here: http://mytimeconverter.com/  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *How it works:* Artists, simply share work of your own, a painting, a drawing, a sculpture, an illustration, and add the hashtag #FirstFridayArtWalk . The Art Walk is open to non-photographic work, in traditional, and digital media. Art lovers and artists alike are welcome to reshare the work of other artists with the  #FirstFridayArtWalk  hashtag as well. This way, we should be able to get a flurry of art circulating in everyone's stream. The hashtag will be supported by Google efforts, so don't miss this opportunity to find new art lovers and artists and attract them here. Also, please use this opportunity to tell us more about your work, or about your favorite artists here on G+ and what fascinates you in their work. This is a unique opportunity to flood Google+ with art and beauty! Also, please circle @103038056099487506311   so that we will be able to reshare the work that you have hashtagged   #FirstFridayArtWalk , from the page. Please note that this time the page will be re-sharing work selectively, so the hashtag is the way to see everything, and the page is the way to see just our selection. Thanks, and we look forward to seeing your work! Please feel free to invite artists and others that you feel may be interested in this event. :) Creatively,  @104672614700283598130 and @107923530149758134024 May G+ First Friday Art Walk2013-05-03 15:00:00264

Scott Jarvie429,302UPDATE: it's online now: http://youtu.be/-DItFCAg4jM  *We like to call this a "PLUS ONE PARTY"* Because people submit links to their albums and we look through the pictures and _*we plus one the pictures we like*_ in the album. It's my way of giving quick feedback to people about which pictures really catch my attention out of their images. It's quick and yet helpful. Last time we looked at over 120 albums *LIVE PUBLIC HANGOUT* Yep it'll be a live public hangout again. Shorter and more awesome than last time. So if you LINK us an album make sure you know they will be on video and then on youtube. We're both really nice people and with people pictures we worry about commentary for fear they're related to you or something. But we may make commentary and you gotta be alright with that as well.  The video won't be edited when it goes onto youtube. I'm basically saying: _*The easily offended need not apply*_ *THEME = PEOPLE PICTURES* @109486822103622036238 and myself have a separate project going on where we're spending dozens of hours researching to find great photographers and create the most awesome list of "people shooters" https://plus.google.com/u/0/100962871525684315897/posts/UMBDiPKJqKa So therefore we've made the theme this time to People pictures as well because that's what mood we're in. If you already have an album like that share it. Or maybe put together another one in the next 24hrs that you'd like us to go through.  Professional work, weddings, families, kids, selfies, street candids, models etc *JOIN IN* This time we'll be linking the albums and having people join us as we go through the pictures... so you may be getting a lot more plus ones (eyeballs) than normal. *FAQ* We won't be looking at non-people pictures even if they're in the album. We'd rather not look at crazy large albums so try to keep them under 50 (but we can be a bit lenient) Please submit open/public albums specially since other people than myself will be wanting to view. Make sure you're following myself (@100962871525684315897 ) and @109486822103622036238  who'll be the moderators of the video. We're looking for someone awesome to help out on the show and provide interesting insights about the people who's work we're looking through so we can focus on the task at hand. *SHARE* Let your friends who photograph people know that it's a fun and easy opportunity. *VIEW* Hope to see you there during the live viewing saturday night at 9pm Mountain time We'll be using this Event as the chat log for the event. *ALBUMS* 1. +susan marinello - https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/109486822103622036238/albums/5787749627481544897 2. +scott jarvie - https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/100962871525684315897/albums/5628519010157340641 3. +Jason Jakober - https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/111397628815301589258/albums/5790838803220260353 4. +Paul R. Trever McGhee95,800Please accept my apologies if your one of the few that got hit by a bug in their system! This is my first event and for some reason Google notified some people 20 times and for some their system was planning on doing that within their calendars for the next 5 years...every single day...20 times a day...how it did or why it would set peoples calendars up to be notified 20 times a day...I don't know. Hopefully they've got it corrected, if not please let me know. I know I wanted to help peoples wishes come true but not in that way, The goal of this event my Birthday is give you as many of my Birthday Wishes as you require...why because you deserve it. My wish is here is to connect you to the thoughts/ the energy of thousands of people around the world all making a Birthday Wish for themselves from the heart... to you. I like to Imagine the energy from all those making a wish and the energy coming from the ones that come true(the smiles..the laughter..the tears...the overflowing of pure joy) being connected to you to power your own wish to come true. Thanks to some theories about Quantum Physics there's no space between you or me or them...topped with the fact they tell us energy is never destroyed, it's gotta go somewhere as each new person joins in, so why not to you to empower your wish to come true sooner rather than later. Imagine being connected to thousands....millions of others all making wishes...all hoping that your wish comes true for it will help empower their wish. They've documented several cases of where positive thoughts have made a difference, so why not around someones birthday who can then share it with everyone whose connected to that person...so me for this event. It's never been done before, so why not now....be part of it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain as we go day by day, year by year building this community of wish granters. Now think of an image that represents your wish and then take2seconds to think of that image at least once a day until it comes true. Have fun with it, there's no right or wrong way when you come from the heart. Please let us know as each wish comes true...yes each wish...there's no law that says you're only granted one wish...you deserve everyone of them when they come from the heart..when that wish fills you with the passion for life... *****UPDATE at first I was focused on getting as many people as possible for this so that everyone had more energy but now after reading your comments..hearing your passion for life...the numbers have gone completely out the window for each one of you have brought your own unique energy to the equation that's priceless....THANK YOU In my world Birthday wishes can be made everyday of the year because it's a celebration everyday that your here to share this with. So today I Celebrate being 44 and 1 day old.Update to fix Google Bug for "It's My Birthday and my wish is for your wishes to come true!!"2012-08-17 12:00:00202

Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream.

I am strong - fit and fierce - and no longer feel like I need to hide who I am.  I suppose that may be why I am oddly fixated with the most recent album by Taylor Swift.  Yeah, that's right, the Tool, APC, Puscifer and general rock music lover is oddly fixated by Tay-Tay and I am okay with that too.  To be real, I love a lot of music, in general, and my only real requirement is that it makes me think or feel.

Anyway, on with the post...

So, since May of 2014, I have been working to get myself back in shape.  Having surgery in 2013 was a wake-up call.  I had a great series of interesting setbacks from leaving the crappy big box gym and dropping the over priced personal training, to a nice, small gym that makes me happy.

"They taped over your mouth, scribbled out the truth with their lies." - Paramore

It isn't often that I shoot without makeup, but sometimes I do.  I hear the debates about PS'ing and "catfishing", but it is art (for me, at least).  I am not falsely advertising myself because I am trying to tell a story or convey some emotion.

I am not marketing myself or a product and selling it to be greater than it is.

Using my +Lensbaby , I wore no makeup and taped over my mouth to follow the lyrics and my vision for this creation.  The flames were previously composed so they were added and texturized, blurred, and used for my framing - a play on that liar, liar (pants on fire) saying.

For me, it isn't about just "snapping a picture", it is about making something that visually says what I want to say.

Namaste! ♥

I Am Not Your Click Bait

Let's just say that I do not like being someone's click bait. I work damn hard to create my art projects, and I don't like false advertisement or someone trying to piggyback off of it. I don't mind my work being reshared without commentary since I write enough in my initial posting, and I certainly don't mind when props are given, but putting links for promotion and using my work as the "bait" just irks me.

This is what I posted as a comment on this reshare:

"If you are going to reshare my work, I would appreciate it if you would not post an advertised link to a Facebook page that has nothing to do with my work. That is my hard work and hours applying makeup to promote my own work and I do not appreciate it being used to click bait people into promoting an event planner that had nothing to do with this... more »

12 Months of Makeup

Makeup Number 6: July

"It won't last you forever. Sooner or later, I'll destroy it. Then I'll show you what the Zerg are really capable of. Oh, and by the way, Admiral, your friend Stukov was twice the man you are. I'm glad you saved me the trouble of killing him." - Sarah Kerrigan (Starcraft)

Queen of Blades
After the panelists weighed in for the month of July, it was decided that I would create a Kerrigan: Queen of Blades Makeup, and I got well under way to strategize the makeup and shoot.

After the panelists weighed in for the month of July, it was decided that I would create a Kerrigan: Queen of Blades Makeup, and I got well under way to strategize the makeup and shoot.

For those of you who do not know about Starcraft or the infamous Sarah Kerrigan (a super badass of the franchise), here is her story:

Sarah Louise Kerrigan, the self-styled Queen of Blades who first appears as a twenty-six-year-old female Terran Ghost, a psychic trained both physically and mentally as an expert espionage agent and assassin. Initially the second-in-command of Sons of Korhal, a revolutionary movement against the oppressive Confederacy of Man, she is captured by the insectoid Zerg and infested, turning her into a human/Zerg hybrid completely under the control of the Zerg Overmind.

She becomes one of the Zerg's most powerful agents, but during the Brood Wars, she replaces the Overmind following its destruction at the end of the great war, and gains control of the Zerg to seek dominance over the galaxy.

A girl forced into impossible circumstances and still overcomes to seek dominance over the galaxy? Yeah, that is why she just rocks!

For this makeup, I mixed a lot of Snazaroo greens, yellows, purples, white, and browns to gt the complex "mottled" look along with the various "infested pox" markings.  After that, it was a simple shadow, lashes, and last looks before popping in my yellow contacts and dystopian dread wig since I just did not have the time to create any kind of carapace or beetle leg dread caps in a single month that I would be proud of.

What is it all about?
At the start of the year, I polled a few friends about new project I wanted to start called   #12monthsofmakeup   and what they thought.  It was then that +Ralph Uy added it might be fun to let a group of willing panelists (aka anyone who wanted to join in on the circle) choose and vote on the concept for the next month.

So, I asked for anyone interested to to make a comment stating their interest as well as ideas to go into the idea pool for February (as I had January already planned), and I received a few responses as well as ideas for February (and onward).

Now, I want to invite anyone publicly to join the group, if you wish, to share ideas and/or vote on the upcoming theme each month.  All you have to do is say that you do, and you are added. Also, feel free to share ideas of makeups you wish to see me do.

How it works:
The first of each month, I will share a list of concepts/themes for make up to the panelists circle to vote on.

There will be one full week to vote.

UPDATE: Since we have an abundance of ideas, we are now doing a fun voting death match so to speak.  Certain themes go head to head until we reach a monthly winner!

After that week, the winning concept will be used in the month and the rest of the ideas go back into the pool for voting in the next month.  During the winning concept/theme reveal, I will also ask for any new ideas.

At some point in the month, before the end, I will shoot the image and post it with the hashtag   publicly for everyone to see.

At that time, people will also have time to join the panel if they wish by doing exactly what I asked this month.

If it catches on, I may even throw out some exclusive hang-out invites to panelists to watch me work my magic!

If I end up with any other rules or processes, I will add as I go, but for now...

Enjoy! ♥

Today I dusted off the Lens Baby Sweet 35.  The fun part of this portrait was that I didn't do much in editing beyond evening the tones and adding a little texture.  Sometimes... A little goes a long way.

After the panelists weighed in for the month of June, it was decided that I would create a Cleopatra Makeup, and I got well under way to strategize the makeup and shoot.

The history of Cleopatra is a fascinating one; I know this will be a long read, but it is worth it to understand why I feel such a connection to her strength and tenacity:

"I will not be triumphed over." - Cleopatra

Daughter of Isis
After the panelists weighed in for the month of June, it was decided that I would create a Cleopatra Makeup, and I got well under way to strategize the makeup and shoot.

The history of Cleopatra is a fascinating one; I know this will be a long read, but it is worth it to understand why I feel such a connection to her strength and tenacity:

Cleopatra VII ruled ancient Egypt as co-regent (first with her two younger brothers – in marriage - and then with her son) for almost three decades. She became the last in a dynasty of Macedonian rulers founded by Ptolemy, who served as general under Alexander the Great during his conquest of Egypt in 332 B.C. Well-educated and clever, Cleopatra could speak various languages and served as the dominant ruler in all three of her co-regencies. Her romantic liaisons and military alliances with the Roman leaders Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, as well as her supposed exotic beauty and powers of seduction, earned her an enduring place in history and popular myth.

Once ascended to the throne with her brother as a co-regent, a feud began and Cleopatra was forced to flee the capital.  Meanwhile, Julius Caesar arrived at Alexandria in the summer of 48 B.C., and found himself drawn into the Egyptian family feud. For decades Egypt had been a subservient ally to Rome, and preserving the stability of the Nile Valley, with its great agricultural wealth, was in Rome's economic interest. Caesar took up residence at Alexandria's royal palace and summoned the warring siblings for a peace conference, which he planned to arbitrate. But Ptolemy XIII's forces barred the return of the king's sister to Alexandria. Aware that Caesar's diplomatic intervention could help her regain the throne, Cleopatra hatched a scheme to sneak herself into the palace for an audience with Caesar. She persuaded her servant Apollodoros to wrap her in a carpet (or, according to some sources, a sack used for storing bedclothes), which he then presented to the 52-year old Roman.

The image of young Cleopatra tumbling out of an unfurled carpet has been dramatized in nearly every film about her, from the silent era to a 1999 TV miniseries, but it was also a key scene in the real Cleopatra's staging of her own life. "She was clearly using all her talents from the moment she arrived on the world stage before Caesar," says Egyptologist Joann Fletcher.

Like most monarchs of her time, Cleopatra saw herself as divine; from birth she and other members of her family were declared to be gods and goddesses. Highly image-conscious, Cleopatra maintained her mystique through shows of splendor.  Cleopatra had strongly identified herself with the goddess Isis, the sister-wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. (This was consistent with the ancient Egyptian tradition of associating royalty with divinity in order to reinforce the position of kings and queens. Cleopatra III had also claimed to be associated with Isis, and Cleopatra VII was referred to as the “New Isis.”)

Though Hollywood versions of her story are jam-packed with anachronisms, embellishments, exaggerations and inaccuracies, the Cleopatras of Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh and Claudette Colbert do share with the real queen a love of pageantry. "Cleopatra was a mistress of disguise and costume," says Fletcher. "She could reinvent herself to suit the occasion, and I think that's a mark of the consummate politician."

When Cleopatra emerged from the carpet—probably somewhat disheveled, but dressed in her best finery—and begged Caesar for aid, the gesture won over Rome's future dictator-for-life. With his help Cleopatra regained Egypt's throne. Ptolemy XIII rebelled against the armistice that Caesar had imposed, but in the ensuing civil war he drowned in the Nile, leaving Cleopatra safely in power.

After the assassination of Caesar, Cleopatra once again needed to solidify her grip on Egypt.  Egyptian custom decreed that Cleopatra marry her remaining brother, Ptolemy XIV, but with her allied gone she had him killed to ensure she stayed in power.  She also had her sister dispatched to prevent her son’s succession to the throne with her.  Such ruthlessness was not only a common feature of Egyptian dynastic politics in Cleopatra's day, it was necessary to ensure her own survival and that of her son. With all domestic threats removed, Cleopatra set about the business of ruling Egypt, the richest nation in the Mediterranean world, and the last to remain independent of Rome.

What kind of pharaoh was Cleopatra? The few remaining contemporary Egyptian sources suggest that she was very popular among her own people. Egypt's Alexandria-based rulers, including Cleopatra, were ethnically Greek, descended from Alexander the Great's general Ptolemy I Soter. They would have spoken Greek and observed Greek customs, separating themselves from the ethnically Egyptian majority. But unlike her forebears, Cleopatra actually bothered to learn the Egyptian language. For Egyptian audiences, she commissioned portraits of herself in the traditional Egyptian style. In one papyrus dated to 35 B.C. Cleopatra is called Philopatris, "she who loves her country." By identifying herself as a truly Egyptian pharaoh, Cleopatra used patriotism to cement her position.

Cleopatra's foreign policy goal, in addition to preserving her personal power, was to maintain Egypt's independence from the rapidly expanding Roman Empire. By trading with Eastern nations—Arabia and possibly as far away as India—she built up Egypt's economy, bolstering her country's status as a world power. By allying herself with Roman general Mark Antony, Cleopatra hoped to keep Octavian, Julius Caesar's heir and Antony's rival, from making Egypt a vassal to Rome. Ancient sources make it clear that Cleopatra and Antony did love each other and that Cleopatra bore Antony three children; still, the relationship was also very useful to an Egyptian queen who wished to expand and protect her empire.

Though some modern historians have portrayed Cleopatra as a capable, popular Egyptian leader, we tend to imagine her through Roman eyes. During her lifetime and in the century after her death, Roman propaganda, most of it originating with her enemy Octavian, painted Cleopatra as a dangerous harlot who employed sex, witchcraft and cunning as she grasped for power beyond what was proper for a woman. The poet Horace, writing in the late first century B.C., called her "A crazy queen...plotting...to demolish the Capitol and topple the [Roman] Empire." Nearly a century later, the Roman poet Lucan labeled her "the shame of Egypt, the lascivious fury who was to become the bane of Rome."

After Roman tempers cooled, the Greek historian Plutarch published a more sympathetic biography. Cleopatra became a tragic heroine, with love of Antony her sole motivation. Over the next two millennia, countless paintings and dramatizations—including Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and John Dryden's All for Love—focused on the fantastic details of her suicide after Octavian defeated Antony. We know almost certainly that Cleopatra, along with her two most trusted servants, killed herself on August 12, 30 B.C., to escape capture by Octavian. However, since the facts of her death were unclear even to the men who found the bodies, we will never know if it was the famous asp that killed the queen, or a smuggled vial of poison. The asp legend has prevailed, however, and the image of her death, more than anything else, gave Cleopatra immortality.

Most info from: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/who-was-cleopatra-151356013/?page=1

A woman who could reinvent herself, use her charisma to win over a nation that she was not truly born into, and used her talents to be successful in her 3 decades of rule.

This power manifests itself as anything from an enemy's equipment failure to hitting just the right switch with a stray shot to shut down an overloading nuclear reactor.

The makeup was pretty straight forward with a palette of golds, blues and teals. I used bronze contouring powders and also some soft highlighters to go for that Egyptian glow.  I used the many makeups done for Cleopatra and paintings of Isis as inspiration for what I created in this challenge.

In processing, I wanted glamour AND I wanted to keep the old paintings and hieroglyphic/papyrus/vintage feel.  There is a great deal of a bronzing and old/scratchy look to the overlays.

I think it was a pretty good success despite all that I had stacked up against me.

Enjoy! ♥

Bad Blood

"Band-aids don't fix bullet holes
You say sorry just for show
You live like that, you live with ghosts
If you love like, that blood runs cold"

~ Taylor Swift - Bad Blood ~

The lyrics have been speaking to me over the last few weeks.  I have seen some bad blood in my days.  Whether with people or more recently with my last job, I remind myself that it doesn't last.

Petty apologies don't fix things, but what does fix things is not being present when the blood runs bad, or two parties that want to make amends come together to try and communicate for the sake of working things out.

Fight or flight?

Run if the relationship isn't worth it - forget about it and let it go - or fight for it if the relationship is something you can't live without.

Just because someone has a problem, it doesn't give them the right to treat others like crap and have it excused away.  They have to TRY to be better.  It's not good enough to say "but this happened to me...."

The moral to the story is exactly this...

Don't make excuses... Don't let bad blood ruin something good and certainly don't let it ruin you.

I suppose it also falls under the #coffeethursday umbrella as well!

Oh, NSFW if you don't have headphones.  There are a lot of bombs dropped in the lyrics!

It has been a good, long time since I contributed to #webcamwednesday by +Isabelle Fortin, so I thought I would share one today.

I don't like to eat breakfast with lipstick on because it gets everywhere. So, I opted to eat my oatmeal and then apply the pencil, color, and gloss with the best mirror I had in the office...

the camera!

Enjoy! <3

Domino: Hey! I resemble that remark.

Caliban: Caliban thinks you're funny, patch eye. Doesn't understand you. But still thinks you're funny.

Yup, I am a big time nerd on so many levels. I like Star Trek, Comics, Anime, Sci-Fi, Star Wars, Coffee and Cat Humor, Techy Things, and so many other nerdy/geeky things.  Getting the opportunity to take one of my favorite marvel characters into my art was super fun.

Over the last few days, I was able to edit and composite yet another shot from the series (below), and it definitely piqued my interest in creating a Heroes and Villians series....

So, stay tuned for those!!!

To embrace that sentiment, I chose to create an image for the challenge that feeling of beginning a journey - a starting point - into being a better and happier version of me.

April ended up turning into May because of the who c. diff infection, but it did give me so much time to go through my old comics while I was resting and recovering, plus I was able to research characters I wasn't as familiar with like the Lost Souls, Fixx, and others, and also look into some of my favorites like Boom Boom, M, Penance, Jinx and others.  I even had time to see Age of Ultron for more inspiration.

I finally decided on a character that I really liked from my pre-tween-dom, Domino.

Domino was a B-A fighter with "luck" on her side.  She was part of an experiment to create perfect weapons (Project Armageddon) making her a strong woman with the ability to subliminally and psionically initiate random telekinetic acts that affect probability in her favor by making improbable (but not impossible) things to occur within her line of sight.  Basically, causing her to have "good luck" and her opponents to have "bad luck."

This power manifests itself as anything from an enemy's equipment failure to hitting just the right switch with a stray shot to shut down an overloading nuclear reactor.

Another of her many notable qualities is that she excels under pressure.

I feel like after the last two months, I have had some luck, I have had to be strong, and I have had to keep myself in check while under a lot of stress.  She was the perfect choice.

The make-up was pretty straight forward with a Snazaroo "clown white' base and then the eye tattoo, which was black paint that I used blue and purple shimmer powders to create the dimension and highlights.  To keep the comic book look alive, I used the black paint and black powders to create ink lines and shadows plus topped it off with a black wig, blue hair chalk, and my pinky paradise lenses.

In processing, I decided to keep it sketchy as well and composited a random free stock comic backdrop to the shot and a little smoke out of the barrel of my "gun".

I think it was a pretty good success despite all that I had stacked up against me.

Being A Wolf

"Wolves don't lose sleep over the opinion of sheep" - My Shirt

I've had a rough go of it these last two months. I faltered on projects (which will be made up) and keeping up with life in general, but for good reason.  The bacterial infection called clostridium difficile (or c. diff for short) was creating chaos in my intestines and it took a good long while for a diagnosis and a course of treatment.

I am normally a pretty patient person, but in this case, when sometimes I seriously wondered about my own mortality, I was truly losing my mind.

I fought hard with countless doctors to figure out what the hack was going on.  You could possibly go so far as to say I was like a wolf hunting for prey (in my case, I was hunting for answers). Once I finally had an answer and a treatment in place, I felt a huge surge of relief.  Itwas... more »

I've had a rough go of it these last two months.

It was something that would not be chronic, and I would be able to go back to normal (as normal as I can be anyway).

During all this scary time of unknowing, I had moments to really evaluate what I am doing and what I want to do from this point forward. One thing I do not want to do is let things - silly, stupid things (and people - aka sheep) - get me down. Sheeple are gonna be sheeple (I don't think they will ever change) and I am going to be a wolf.

In an effort to institute some changes, I opted for a full length capture of myself, which I rarely do.  I sometimes have a love/hate relationship with my body, especially when it comes to shots that are meant to be glamorous or flattering.  It isn't that I don't love being me or in my own skin, but I am not a trained model and I am much better at seeing a vision of what I want, creating it through make-up or compositing, and usually those visions happen from the belly button and up.

I also left out the make-up and any sort of costumes or props.  In this #SSP  image, you simply get me in what I would wear (and how I would look) on any given Sunday.

Namaste and enjoy! ♥

"Wealth is the ability to fully experience life." - Henry David Thoreau

This posting will probably not win me any friends or followers, but that is okay.  We are all entitled to our opinions and experiences and for me, one of the reasons I used to be excited to log into social media was for the friendships, the learning, and the community that it held.

Google to a larger degree was a definitive place for me to hone my craft, build up my skill sets, and just make good art.

Over the last few months, whenever I log into my social media accounts, I see more advertising and promotion rather than simply the art or education that I had become accustom to.  It is actually one of (not all) the reasons I am not as present.  I want to log in when I have good art to share.  I don't necessarily want to see mediocre images or people posting art asadv... more »

Over the last few months, whenever I log into my social media accounts, I see more advertising and promotion rather than simply the art or education that I had become accustom to.  It is actually one of (not all) the reasons I am not as present.  I want to log in when I have good art to share.  I don't necessarily want to see mediocre images or people posting art as advertising either.

I do understand that some people make a living by photography or art, in general, but when the promotion is without substance and is only being done to gain 'popularity or internet fame', it becomes rather boring.

As a way to put my thoughts together for an artistic piece, that also works as my entry for the AoSP April Challenge of Wet; I used my ring light, water in a bathtub, almond milk, and money (I had a barrier of tape between my mouth and that five dollar bill because money is gross) to illustrate my vision of selling out.

This is not a posting to sound callous or mean, it is simply how I feel towards art and especially my own; I make it because there is some idea or message I want to make or some sort of challenging fun I want to have.

Namaste! ♥

12 Months of Make-Up

Make-Up Number 3: March

In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different. - Coco Chanel

After the panelists weighed in for the next month, it was decided that March would be Vintage Victory Rolls, and I got well under way to figure out my concept, plan my makeup and obviously hair, and strategize the shoot.

Since victory rolls are kind of self-explanatory, I didn't have to research much except for a few different ways to wrap them up based on my own hair length.  In addition to that, I referenced some starlets from the 1940's to get an idea on how I should rock the make-up.  I opted for a softer, simpler look since the hair would take center stage.

Once I had the look, I had to think of how I wanted to shoot it.

I decided to kill two shots with one session by creating my multiplicity shot for AoSP challenge, and also a nice close-up glamour shot for this project.  In both, I wanted to stick to a very vintage look all the way down to the processing.

I think it was a pretty good success.

What is it all about?
Earlier in January, I polled a few friends about new project I wanted to start called #12monthsofmakeup  and what they thought.  It was then that +Ralph Uy added it might be fun to let a group of willing panelists (aka anyone who wanted to join in on the circle) choose and vote on the concept for the next month.

So, I asked for anyone interested to to make a comment stating their interest as well as ideas to go into the idea pool for February (as I had January already planned), and I received a few responses as well as ideas for February (and now March onward).

At some point in the month, before the end, I will shoot the image and post it with the hashtag   #12monthsofmakeup   publicly for everyone to see.

At that time, people will also have time to join the panel if they wish by doing exactly what I asked this month.

If it catches on, I may even throw out some exclusive hang-out invites to panelists to watch me work my magic!

If I end up with any other rules or processes, I will add as I go, but for now...

Enjoy! ♥___

Behind The Scenes

Some of you know me as the lady who does crazy make-ups and sometimes fancy portraits of myself; however, sometimes I get asked if I really do it all.  Do I do the make-up? Do I do the hair? Do I really set my own lighting? And, do I really get it all done by myself?

The answer is YES!

I thought, for the AoSP March Challenge Multiplicity shot, I would play off that theme of doing it all while creating my #12monthsofmakeup  Victory Roll look.

I struggled with the look because foolishly I forgot hairspray lol, but once the hair was done, the make-up was simple and classy to match the 1940's era.

Very soon I will have the actual image processed for that project, but for now...

Enjoy your Sunday, my loverlies! ♥

Another day, a different dream perhaps.

I created this image from my Alice #12monthsofmakeup  photoshoot series as a way to say thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday!

I make art for myself and for the enjoyment of my friends!

So, the best gift I gave myself (besides an awesome new pillow top) is making a new image to share!

Thanks my loverlies and enjoy! ♥

Get them while you can! Limited Edition Prints from the wonderful, and ultra talented +Rachel Tine!

Rose -
Very Important – Please Read

For those of you who don’t know, I was married once, and I have a beautiful and awesome 5 year old son from that ill-fated union. Due to abusive behavior, I won my divorce in 2012, and have been raising my son on my own ever since. In that time, I have earned my Bachelor’s degree in psychology and have started to get my freelance photography business off the ground. However, my ex-husband stopped paying his court-ordered child support 3 months ago, and in that time I have spent much of my savings while trying to expedite the process of building a financially viable photography business and providing for my son. In an attempt to stay afloat while I put the pedal to the metal with photography, I have decided to offer my first limited edition print sale. For this sale, I will be offering only 10 copies each (after which I will never print the image again) of any of the abandonment prints on my website (racheltinephotography.com/abandonments/), any of the images from my first published magazine editorial (racheltinephotography.com/beauty-portraits/), and the image featured in this post, which was just published on Vogue Italia’s website. All photographs will be printed on Kodak Endura Luster paper; the prices for this limited edition print sale are as follows:

8x12 - $50
10x15 - $75
12x18 - $100
16x24 - $120

Payments can be made through PayPal to racheltine@gmail.com; please be sure to indicate the name and size of the print that you are purchasing, as well as your mailing address. Non-limited edition prints of other images are available at lower price points; shoot me an email at racheltine@gmail.com for more info. Thank you in advance for your support. <3 <3 <3

Now, on to your regularly scheduled programming:

For #halfnekkidthursday ,  #tbt , and for #lyricallyinspired  from +Jason Jakober, +Tara Romasanta, +Amanda Recker and me, here’s a song to accompany a shot from my first time shooting a model (Lauren Arsenault) in an abandoned building:

#TheNational

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef1nJWtkprU

“Today you were far away
and I didn't ask you why
What could I say
I was far away
You just walked away
and I just watched you
What could I say

How close am I to losing you

Tonight you just close your eyes
and I just watch you
slip away

How close am I to losing you

Hey, are you awake
Yeah I'm right here
Well can I ask you about today

How close am I to losing you
How close am I to losing.”

Thank you for your constant encouragement and support; I’ve grown so much since joining this community, and I look forward to what the future has in store! :)___Get them while you can! Limited Edition Prints from the wonderful, and ultra talented +Rachel Tine!

Multiplicity... The more the merrier... More of you to love... Me, myself, and I...

Take part in the fun challenge for March; the details are below in the original share!

This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: Multiplicity.

(The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified.

Tips & Inspiration

There are several different ways to go about achieving this effect. In camera, you can use a long exposure and move around. Alternately, you can use post processing to create multiples in an image. Photoshop is most widely considered in this type of editing, but other programs can also be used to achieve effect, such as Gimp.

For those with no experience with creating "multiplicity" images with post processing, here are a few resources to help you get started:

Gimp Multiplicity Tutorial Videos: http://goo.gl/hChZ0Q

Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired.

If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/W69Ohj and ask away! We have a category for discussion and questions and are happy to help with anything.

Thanks to +Shantha Marie Fountain, one of the talented moderators of The Art of Self Portraiture, for the image used in this Event's header.

Love Is...

Never Letting Go

I created this for a few reasons.  One, it was from my time with +The Traveling Shirt ; two, it went with something I had contemplated doing when I got the #pinkshirt  ; three, it went with a #lyricallyinspired  shot I had been planning to the song The Heart Wants What It Wants; and lastly, because the theme for the AoSP February Challenge was Love Is...

For me, once you have love, and a true love (whether spousal, family, parent-child bond), you don't let it go.  What I mean by this is that you work at it.  It won't always be easy, but it will always be worth it.

Now, here is the low down on the challenge from the words of +Lotus Carroll :

This is the Event for our February Self Portrait Challenge: Love Is...
There is always quite a divide in feelings about Valentines Day out there, and about Love in general, and we figured that we'd let you guys battle out your feelings about that here on the "Self Portrait Stage" for this Challenge.

Is Love Cruel? Is Love Kind? Is it something else? What is love? Let's see how you can conceptualize this with your self portraits!

Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait with a "Love Is..." theme. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST February 28th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified.

Inspiration

Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we'll be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired.

I've thrown some of my own self portraits that would loosely fit this theme into an album here: http://goo.gl/zZHbNG

Halfway Through

I have been a little absent from the Goog-sphere recently, but not because of any love lost; it is because I am working hard in the gym to complete a 90-day challenge. I am eating well, lifting heavy, rocking the 5x5s, and staying super busy.

In honor of making it to the halfway point - day forty-five - I thought I would share the side-by-side from Day 1 to Day 45 for #webcamwednesday with the awesomesauce +Isabelle Fortin

Enjoy beasties! <3

If it catches on, I may even throw out some exclusive hang-out invites to panelists to watch me work my magic!

If I end up with any other rules or processes, I will add as I go, but for now...

Enjoy! ♥

In being happy, I found awesomesauce support from bodybuilders, gym junkies, fellow healthy ladies and lady lifters, and the like, which have helped me with direction and friendship while on my fitness journey.

This shot was about sticking a knife in the old and fiercely taking my life by the horns.  I am the controller of how I am, and I rather like it these days!

Namaste and enjoy, my loverlies! ♥

There Can Be Only One Me

“I am a rare species, not a stereotype.” ― Ivan E. Coyote

I love to inspire people to go beyond their comfort zones to find a realness and true-ness within themselves.  I make art, write words, and create things to act as a vehicle for that kind of inspiration.  I do this sort of thing in the virtual world as well as in the real world.

Even more so now in the real world with my crazy workout schedule and fitness challenge.  It has become infectious and people are joining with me, and asking me for my opinions on things.

On that note, it has given me a lot more confidence in myself to be who I am, and say what I want to say.  Live the way I want to live.  By nature, I am calm and lead a pretty peaceful existence, but one thing that does bother me is my shadow.

On that note, it has given me a lot more confidence in myself to be who I am, and say what I want to say.  Live the way I want to live.  By nature, I am calm and lead a pretty peaceful existence, but one thing that does bother me is my shadow.

This shadow started following me in 2009/2010 and has tried to add itself to many things I have put myself in.  Attaching itself to friends I have made and so on.  Most recently, I have had to block IPs and privatize a lot of my life because I just want to be free of this darkness.

It has been a good move and it has filled me with a great amount of satisfaction to step out from behind that shadow to be me.  I have found a new-found sense of freedom; like a bird let loose from a cage.  I spoke about it some on other social media sites, but I just don't feel like I need to sensor my mouth or my emotions towards anything because I am more confident and happy this way.

One of my favorite quotes says it best:

"You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better." - Anne Lamott

Behave well, and you will never fear what anyone has to say about you, and if you are worried about what someone might say, then behave better! ;)

Without further ado, I present my entry to the "Faceless" AoSP January Challenge.

Enjoy and namaste loverlies! ♥

Joyful Glamour

This year has been interesting, to say the least.  I have seen a lot of good and even seen my share of bad times.  I graduated with my digital design degree and I have had lots of changes at work.  People have come into my life and some have left - some have even left their mortal coils.

Still, joy is a very personal thing.

I rejoice in knowing those who have passed, and I feel joy for all the things I have accomplished this year.  I have become quite serious about my health and taken to strength training and weight lifting; this is something I plan on expanding in the upcoming year as well.

These are the types of things that make me glow.

Each of us are different, though.  It was actually quite difficult for me to come up with something that I thought would emote happiness in such a way that befitted me.

These are the types of things that make me glow.

Each of us are different, though.  It was actually quite difficult for me to come up with something that I thought would emote happiness in such a way that befitted me.

I thought of taking pictures with my daughter, since she makes me happy; I thought of even holding images of my family since they are also another place for joy with me, and then finally it hit me today.

Creating something from nothing is one of my most happy outlets.  So, I pulled a few of the holiday decorations out, did a smokey beauty makeup, and then began fashioning a head piece and harness to allow me to create the image you see.

It is joyful glamour because it made me happy to create - it encompassed my favorite elements of photography and design.

So, let's all go say goodbye to 2014, and usher in 2015 right!

Enjoy! ♥
