We've been blogging a lot on the Sesat School blog: http://www.sesatschool.org/blog/

My latest posts are about taking a field trip to the dump, and the great idea a teacher at Alt School had of taking the kids to a field trip to Pottery Barn.  I also wrote about community and the Amish, and another learning idea from RADschool, where the children made a whole city, with different businesses and services, and even ATMs and policing. So many good projects out there!

Today, we launched the Findery app for iPhone that I've been working on for nearly a year. I'm super proud of what we accomplished.

We've had excellent coverage in both the tech press and in the general press.

Here's a great review which does a nice job of covering the app:

Amazing video!

"Last Thanksgiving, Cerniello traveled to his friend Danielle’s family reunion and with still photographer Keith Sirchio shot portraits of her youngest cousins through to her oldest relatives with a Hasselblad medium format camera. Then began the process of scanning each photo with a drum scanner at the U.N. in New York, at which point he carefully edited the photos to select the family members that had the most similar bone structure. Next he brought on animators Nathan Meier and Edmund Earle who worked in After Effects and 3D Studio Max to morph and animate the still photos to make them lifelike as possible. Finally, Nuke (a kind of 3D visual effects software) artist George Cuddy was brought on to smooth out some small details like the eyes and hair."

Watch this entire video, sound on, from beginning to end. Don't skip around, or you'll miss the point.

Great quote from Robert Frost:

"But yield who will to their separation,
My object in living is to unite
My avocation and my vocation
As my two eyes make one in sight.
Only where love and need are one,
And the work is play for mortal stakes,
Is the deed ever really done
For Heaven and the future's sakes."

Inspiring. More young people in office please!!

The case for young people running for office. A wonderful talk by Svante Myrick, 26 year old mayor of Ithaca NY.  I think my favorite moment is when he talks about a young black man being asked (mistakenly) if he was the Mayor, and how that changed how he felt about himself. He'd been mistaken for a lot of things - a mugger, someone to be scared of, but never someone to look up to, someone in authority.

I also love how he tells the story of how many people helped him, and why the myth of the self-made man is destructive.  +Jennifer Pahlka, who shared this with me, pulled out this quote:

"Why is it important to tell the story that way? What does it matter how we tell our stories? It matters because if we tell the stories the correct way, we get the correct moral from those stories. And when we tell them the wrong way, the way we’ve been telling them for too wrong in this country -- the story of self-made men and great men and women of history -- we’re get the wrong morals, and from the wrong morals we take the wrong actions."___Inspiring. Love this from +Ken Yeung

"While thinking about this post, I did some searches on what a pinwheel actually comes to represent. In the Chinese tradition, a pinwheel has come to represent the flowing in and out of fortune. It might seem like a stretch, but the pinwheel seems to be a symbol of sharing memories between a group of people back and forth and forever for all time."
