This is very sad news to me. Syria, and particularly Damascus and Aleppo, are some of my favorite desitinations in the world for photography - amazing places!

Generally I love any improvements to the design of G+, which have been really nice and progressive, but a recent change just keeps on visually assaulting me every time I visit - those insipid little round avatars and profile pics!
It's a format that just doesn't make anybody's mugshot look good, neither does it do any favors to carefully constructed (square) artistic avatars and logos. All you end up with is a round blob with something in it! Anybody else feel the same?

Candid portrait of a dhow packer, taken at the Dhow Wharf on Dubai Creek a few years back. I miss the many days I spent photographing there, and eventually also often being invited onto the dhows to enjoy some tea together with the crew.

By chance, I came across an old abandoned taxi on the streets of a small town in Penang a while back. My first attempts to photograph it kinda failed, as they were just shots of an old taxi - nothing special and a bit ho-hum. I later returned to try another approach and then noticed what's been left behind by the owner inside the car. A polarizer filter took away the glare on the windscreen, but also exposed some strange streaking that must be something inside the glass.
Perhaps the result is not to everybody's liking, but I like playing around with this image. Opinions most welcome.

Having just moved into a very old house, the previous owners (in their late 80s) left me with a rather curious device - an old stereoscope with about 100 old stereo image cards. The device is handmade from wood and tin and I suspect that it may date from the second half of the 1800s. The image cards are mostly hand coloured, apart from a black & white series too.
Do anybody know more about such stereoscopes, i.e. age, value etc? More info is most welcome.

Wishing everybody a wonderfully prosperous 2013, full of bright, white toothy grins!
Also a huge and special thanks to those who've been supporting and following my efforts here on G+. It's been a tough 2012 for me on many levels, and I'm still without reliable internet and a functioning laptop - hoping that will change soon so that I can properly engage with my photographic work again. Best wishes!

Don't you just HATE that trying to remove all kinds of stupid manufacturer stickers from the faces of new household appliances takes longer than manufacturing the piece?!! And that's if you manage to actually get it off without having to call upon the heavy chemicals ...

Haven't been using Snapseed for a while, but every time I do, I get reminded how much fun it is to play around with.
Out of curiosity, when / if you do mobile photography and processing, what's you fave app to use? There's obviously Snapseed, Instagram, Hipstamatic etc. I've personally been using Hipstamatic more than any others (results which I never really post to G+) as I kinda like the "unpredictability" of selecting a lens / film combination upfront and not having to post-process.

I'm now getting more than slightly pissed off with Apple!
I (used to) routinely link my wifi-only iPad to my iPhone data via the "Personal Hotspot" function, which worked wonderfully all the time and every time up to IOS 5. Since upgrading to IOS 6, and subsequently IOS 6.1, about 90% of the time I have to reboot both devices before they connect!!!
I used to like Apple products because they simply worked without fail, but my opinion is now very much tainted. I can accept an IOS upgrade to have some minor bugs, and that these are usually quickly solved with a smaller upgrade, but with how is it possible that this problem cannot have been properly addressed and solved by now?
Anybody else having the same problems? If it's something that I'm doing wrong, or some hidden new setting that I need to know about, please let me know.

A few years ago, I started a street project called "The Graphic Tweets of Idiot". I've forgotten about it until somebody recently inquired about it again, so - perhaps time to resurrect Idiot ...
This is the first, introductory image from a 12-part series. This project was basically inspired at the time by (what I find) the absolute nonsense that most people tweeted, which got me thinking: People can tweet whatever the hell they want, and lie about their true circumstances. Most text-only tweets seem to also be totally without context. Idiot was born - a faceless, lonely wooden puppet tweeting his daily encounters, but within a photographic context that with nowhere to really hide the truth behind his tweets.
The project was meant to be a tongue in cheek look at social networking, and not designed to offend - just a bit of fun. I'll post the first 12 sequential &qu... more »

WINDOWS 8: SOME SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY QUESTIONS
I'm still contemplating upgrading to Windows 8, but am hesitant if it will involve having to not only get familiar with a new OS (which I'm ready for), but having to struggle with having to make my existing software work again as it should, and if it will...
Do anybody have some experience and advice to share?
In particular, I mostly run the following software on a regular basis:
Photoshop CS5.1
Lightroom
InDesign
AutoCAD 2010
Adobe Acrobat
MS Office Suite
What's your opinion? #windows8

As a street photographer, where do YOU draw the line?
A recent comment on one of my images (on a different forum) made me wonder once again what kind of subjects different street photographers actively avoid shooting, We obviously all have different interests, styles and "moral" standards of some kind, for lack of a better word, and a street "roamers" are bound to bump into a few situations that will challenge your principles. It would be interesting to know what kind of subjects or circumstances you will generally NOT shoot (if any), and why do you avoid it?
