Parenting lesson of the day
Just registered Tyler in about 10 golf tournaments for this spring/summer. Best sport in the world. Tyler is our biggest little guy. He'll be graduating HS next year and can probably twirl me around over his head with one hand. But we're certain he loves it when we call him one of our little guys.
Tyler can practice golf for 8-10 hours a day and even indoors. He'll wake up the next day looking for more. When you witness passion like that, you do everything you can to support it.

Wax Museum fail
A staycation day with the kids here in DC led to a trip to Madame Tussauds. Evan's been asking to go there since we moved here 3 years ago. I finally relented and afterward he admitted it was a bust.
Except for this Jennifer Lopez wax figure that is. What the??? I know the whole butt thing was a major "go to" a few years back, but this is ridiculous. They could have cut back on the wax a bit here. A better move would have been to focus on her green dress from the Grammys a few years ago.
Stick with the Smithsonians when you're here in town. Can't go wrong.

My Google Life
This morning at 6am I needed to check out of my first hotel. I've never ever cared about bed quality in these things until last night. So I used my trusty Google Maps via android to look for a Homewood Suites nearby. Yes, I love the free happy hour every night (light dinner and a couple free beers). And I needed to get there quick.
Used my Google Maps walking directions and it said 8 mins away. And this is the best part. Google freakin Maps included a little shortcut through a neighborhood park.

Google Sets
Give it two examples, and Google's spreadsheet can make a list of almost anything.
Create a new spreadsheet in Google Drive, type mazda in A1 and honda in A2 (the first column), highlight the two cells and then press Ctrl (or Option for Mac) while clicking and dragging the small blue box from the lower-right corner to select additional cells where to place the Google Sets results.
Yesterday +TechCrunch reported that if you make a spreadsheet in Google Drive (Google Docs, formerly), enter and highlight the names of two beers, and pull down on the corner of the spreadsheet cell while holding Option or Control, the app will automatically fill the following cells with the names of other beers. The information is pulled, seemingly, from nowhere. It doesn't just work for beer, car brands, colors, states, or websites, as reported, but just ab... more »

Groupon - best final words by a departing CEO ever
"After four and a half intense and wonderful years as C.E.O. of Groupon, I've decided that I'd like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding - I was fired today. If you're wondering why... you haven't been paying attention."
I've written a ton about Groupon here in the past and have often expressed my disgust in their IPO. It's been a great week for anyone that hates those guys. The stock was down 25% the other day and yesterday the CEO finally got canned. If you own Groupon stock, you're an idiot. If your 401K owns Groupon stock, I suggest you switch firms. The stock will get to $0 soon enough, as you can only live off other people's money for so long. As much as I deride the company, I can appreciate the final words of Andrew Mason to his team:

I'd play the Top 100 Golf Courses in the country and give everyone access. They'd have a point of view like never before. People who love the game would dream of seeing some of these holes up close and people who don't love the game might learn to appreciate the majesty. Of course, with me playing, they might get tired of seeing the woods.
Maybe I'd even capture a hole in one at Pebble Beach's 16th. Hey, we can all dream.

ClubGolf - Future Champions Golf Academy
A new camp the local High School golfers will be starting in a couple of weeks. I think they'll be kicking some butt on the DC Metro junior golf scene this year.
Clubgolf is an indoor golf facility just north of DC in Gaithersburg, MD. The stuff they have in there and the commitment to golf is really unbelievable. If you need golf lessons this is definitely the place.

One of engineers +Mike Hearn in my spam team wrote this wonderful google blogpost about account hijacking that is prevalent in the web, and most importantly what you should do about it. In this world full of passwords, make sure you pick strong unique ones. Use 2 step verification (fancy name for protecting your account using 2 things - password AND a phone). Make sure you plan in event of a hijack - update your account with recovery options - it is online world's equivalent of an emergency kit.

Dear Google, I sort of want to have sex with you. Or I want you to be my father. Or my best friend. I don't know, I feel so nervous writing this letter. I hope you write back but you can't because you're God and God has to care for all of Her People and not just one tiny little person like me.

Dear Google,
The other day I wanted to learn about "Vincent Van Gogh". I saw a book in the bookstore but it looked boring and it was around 1000 pages. Who would read such a book?
But when I was thumbing through it I saw how he was trying to become friends with other artists and how he was trying to organize exhibitions of other artists. It was almost like he was trying to build his TRIBE which is a modern word to describe a group with similar interests who try to help each other.
Van Gogh had the right idea. I wanted to read more about ... more »

Quote of the year from resident genius below. This guy thinks it might be the internet that's causing trouble for old media like Time magazine. No kidding??? The internet? Holy crap. Where's he getting this information?
There are many reasons why Time Warner and its rivals are struggling in the current environment. Anthony Wile at The Daily Bell thinks it’s the “Internet revolution” that is giving readers a vastly larger and more variegated offering of news and views that is causing the disruption: "Much as the Gutenberg Press undermined the system set up by the powers-that-be 500 years ago, so the Internet is doing the same sort of thing now."

Netflix's House of Cards is a big success! The homegrown series is the most watched title at Netflix, according to Netflix’ Ted Sarandos, who's speaking at the D: Dive Into Media conference.
It's definitely a worthy show if you're looking for a new series to watch. You'll be hooked. #netflix #houseofcards #TV #allthingsd #KevinSpacey

Great article again about my favorite topic.
Never even thought of this possibility, but it seems very logical at the moment.
"The value of supplying driverless software to some portion of all new cars might warrant Google’s pursuing the Android strategy again by licensing the software for a price so low that manufacturers cannot refuse. Imagine a fleet of millions of cars feeding map and traffic data to Google maps, feeding location and behavior data to Google’s customer intelligence, acting as repeaters to Google’s broadband mesh WiFi network and, of course, exchanging queries and advertising via Google’s search engine."

Is House Of Cards The Future Of TV? The broadcast and cable TV channels need to revisit their business model. The excellent (dare I say addicting?) new NetFlix series House of Cards is changing all the rules. As if to thumb their nose at conventional TV, which builds suspense by making viewers wait a week before checking on a series they have started watching, NetFlix has made the entire first season of House of Cards available at once. NetFlix changed the way we watch movies; now, it is changing the way we view TV. Of course, the series has to be quality, and this one is. It reminds me of a novel that you can't put down. It is available as easily as you pick up a book, or load an Ebook. If I had to categorize it, it is West Wing meets Shakespeare. Spacey's character speaks to the audience, Iago like, and is just as cunning and evil. Watch the first episode, and, if you aren't already a Netflix ... more »

Read this whole post? Ain't nobody got time for that! ;o) You can do it. A little love for the long form posters on here...
I love all things Google. I believe that the projects they work on, make my life better. I work with Android, Chrome, Drive and Maps everyday and try to learn more about them all the time. I love the framework that is Google+ and learning more about how we can all use it better.
I love business. To me, creating and building a successful business, one that makes something people want, provides a service people want and charges a price to make a fair profit and grow, is the highest art form. Google Groups vs. Google Communities
I ended up joining a few Communities to check em out. One of them is about using Google Docs and Drive. The problem with this Google+ Community is that most of the joinees have questions about Google Drive and not many of the members have the answer.
So then I thought how great it would be if a "Google Docs Community Manager" would participate in our Community and help us give some answers. After all, they are still actively doing that over in Google Groups. Then I thought why do we still have Google Groups??? Should I be sending these Google+ people over there for the answers? Doesn't seem like the right move.
Google Groups has a lot of forum functionality that would be useful in Communities. Do you think Communities will soon get that kind of functionality?
What is the future of Google Groups? Will all of the... more »
