The latest whitepaper in the Live Web series. Want to see the future? This is it, regardless of whether Kynetx is the one who brings it about or not. A world where everything is connected is inevitable.

I love that Jon does this kind of thing with non-technical students. Exactly what people need to know about computation.

On the desk or laptop, we feel at home in a console, a collection of windows (cough) of multiple cooperating or not processes. The metaphor is to pull information from various sources and push our responses out onto that thoroughfare. We call this thoroughfare the Web, and we love the feeling of control the PC provides.

In both cases his underlying argument is that the Court has no business getting in the way of “progress”—with progress defined, apparently, as whatever the duly elected members of Congress say it is.

+Jon Udell mentioned this book by +Phil Windley on Twitter.
The Amazon page says: "Through the use of a new programming language called KRL, "The Live Web" introduces the ideas, concepts, models, techniques, and technologies necessary to easily create applications that work across the Internet in real-time."
Interesting. The first language called KRL Wikipedia told me about is a Knowledge Representation Language by Terry Winograd. This isn't that one.
Instead it's Kinetic Rule Language. It's an event-driven, rule-based language aimed at the Web. There is an open source implementation on Github, written in Perl (I'm scared of Perl so won't be investigating that any further). But the idea seems on the nail - Phil uses a great quote on his blog: A Database is Like a Phone that Doesn't Ring
This all comes as a nice... more »

I have been contemplating taking over someone else's project that is written in .Net. As I thought about it, I realized it's not C# that is a problem, it's the framework. Learning a language you don't know--particularly one like C# that is fairly traditional in style--is much easier and far less daunting that learning the framework that the language exists in.
People constantly say that learning a new language is a barrier, but I'm beginning to think it's not the language, it's the framework that surrounds any modern language. If you want to get something done, you have to know the framework.
One of the nice things about CGI was that it provided a common framework that was largely language independent.
