Spent the weekend recharging the batteries.
(Literally.)
As in several dozen sets of 'AA' batteries, digital camera batteries, and making sure that neglected electronics all have a full charge :)

Here's an image from my recent trip to the desert of Israel... Our group was hiking in a dust storm. But being from Colorado, we just kept going and didn't know it was bad. The color / white balance is straight out of the camera. The camera... needs to go in for a cleaning. :)
Canon 5D Mark III, 70-200 f/2.8 lens; 1/500 second exposure, f/5.6, 85 mm.

A quick photo from Casa Bonita in Denver today - the cliff-diving restaurant. There was a strong backlight, and the place is really, really dark. So I cranked it up to ISO 10,000 and used the flashlight app on the iPhone to throw a little extra light on the face.

Rabbis on Skis!
Enjoy these images from a rabinnic conference in Vail, Colorado, with rabbis from around the US.
All images were taken with the Canon 5D Mark III; all the outdoor shots were taken with the 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens. (Mostly because the lens fits so nicely under a ski jacket.)

The view from Chair 5 at Vail, Colorado.
I took this earlier this week while photographing a conference. If you have skied Vail, Chair 5 is some of the best skiing there.
Tech Specs: Canon 5D Mark III, 40mm pancake lens.

I didn't post the final photos of these bottles of Bourbon from Sam Medley, but now that the Old Medley brand is now on store shelves, here's the final images that I took of both bottles.
Tech Details: This was done on a black background, with three flashes. Two flashes were remotely triggered on light stands, shot through Gary Fong Diffusers, then through white umbrellas, and then through a third diffuser panel. The third flash was directly behind the bottle, and had a yellow warming gel on it that helped light the liquid from the inside. I used a halogen light, again on a lightstand, but diffused that as well with a dome diffuser to cut reflection. It was shot using the Canon 1DX (then on loan from Canon; I had to send it back), with a 150 mm macro lens @ f/16, on a tripod with mirror lockup.

My friend, Sam Medley is re-launching a bourbon brand... his grandfather had distilled this in the 1950s, and Sam found a bottle of it hiding in his basement. Sam dropped off a new bottle today for photos, but the best part is that I get to keep the bottle when the photos are done. It's fun to have this a few weeks before it hits the shelves.
Tech Specs for the photo: I still am testing the Canon 1DX, so I used this, along with a macro lens and a three flash setup with lots of diffusers (i.e. a flash on a Gary Fong collapsable diffuser, shot through a white umbrella, then diffused even more with a 1 stop diffuser panel). I also had a halogen light shining on the front, and a clipped the top of a Gary Fong diffuser to cut more reflections. (Good thing we did a bunch of work on Gary's site, so I was able to get a bunch of products).
Canon 1DX, 150 mm macro lens, f/8.0, ISO 8... more »

FYI, Adobe is now offering free CS2 Downloads off of their site for free:
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.html
This is in response to all of the stuff out there, and they’d rather have people get an older version for free than have people pirate stuff.

What would you do if you received a Canon 1DX to test out? I decided to take it skiing at Copper Mountain, Colorado, and see how it compared to skiing with the Canon 5D Mark III. I used the 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens, as it works really well in bright light, focuses fast, and fits easily under the ski jacket.
Here are some images from today. Bottom line: most of the functionality is similar. But the 1DX is a race car. You press the shutter button and boom... lots of images. I went through 20 gb before I knew it. Great camera. But it costs more than my truck. Which isn't saying a lot for the truck, I guess :)
