GM Kernspecht on why we become stiff in Wing Tsun:

 - If you pause after the last movement and “pose“, you stiffen up. There is a motto in WT: “Never pose during a Bong-Sao“. But should the same not apply to every movement?
 - If you start to think (Why did he manage to hit me? Why doesn’t that work? What technique/combination shall I use now?), you stop and become stiff.
 - If you block or resist, you stop and become stiff.
 - If you perform a successful movement and do not immediately follow it with another, but rather pause to admire its effects, you stop and become stiff.
 - If you use combinations learned by heart and they fail to work, you are shocked, stop and become stiff.
 - If you exert yourself and grab the opponent, you stop and become stiff.

An editorial by GM Kernspecht (Leung Ting) on Chi Sao training

Aggression, strength and speed have no place in sensitivity training

It is never enjoyable to be hit by someone, and some feel frustrated or even humiliated. But being hit by virtue of the WingTsun principles is a quite different matter. Because you have practically hit yourself, like treading on a rake and the handle comes up to hit you. We know that the rake has no will of its own, and no intentions, and it was not the rake’s ego that wanted to injure us, therefore the ego of the person hit is not, or should not be, involved either.

Blocking the other person’s movement prevents the learning effect

At least for those who seek salvation in blocking. Everything the other person does should be welcomed, and not prevented. I remember an occasion in 1977 very well, when I was practicing ChiSao with mySiF... more »

I remember an occasion in 1977 very well, when I was practicing ChiSao with my SiFu in his school in Hong Kong. I must have committed the beginner’s error of trying to block my teacher’s arms, i.e. to impede him in his movement. Today I also criticise my students if they try to prevent something by resisting it, rather than accepting the impulse and softly exploiting it.

At any rate, my teacher quite rightly asked me what I thought I was doing. Proud of something which really should not be a source of pride in ChiSao, I truculently answered: “I’m blocking you.” Within fractions of a second I was on the run, as anger personified drove me across the room with an unending fusillade of chain-punches and pursuit steps, shouting “Nobody can block me!”. Si-Mo was present to witness me disproving the accepted natural principle that nobody can run backwards as fast as forwards.

Insist on nothing, and resist nothing

We let everything happen that our partner initiates! But we are no longer where he intends to strike: The target has gone!

We must not put ourselves under pressure!

I not only mean this psychologically, i.e. in the sense that we are hungry for success and therefore come under self-imposed stress. I also mean it in the sense that the resisting force we feel is often our own. Often it is our own body that gets in the way of the arms our partner is pushing towards us.

Cat-like softness should not be confused with limpness!

Please do not misunderstand me: I am talking about “slight” forward pressure, or even barely perceptible pressure, but not about “none at all”. Neither do I want our students to be completely without any structure, as is the case with certain newly created styles which have misunderstood something somewhere along the line, and practice the softness of “limp fish” or overcooked spaghetti. Always Yin is just as wrong as always Yang!

Defence no faster than the attack

The defence should not be faster than the partner’s attack. Only then can we be sure that no mistakes are committed which are concealed by speed. Moreover, it makes no sense when practicing together slowly if one party increases speed to the extent that there is a difference in speeds that can never occur in a real fight. I am referring to the prevention of blows, not to counter-attacks!

Defence no stronger than the attack

Both partners should not only work at the same speed, but also exert the same strength.

Use the same weaponry

Out of fairness, anybody practicing ChiSao with a partner holding a much lower grade should restrict himself to “methods” that the partner also has at his disposal. This particularly applies to the traditional divide between Biu-Tze techniques and the basic WT repertoire. What most people do not know, or do not want to acknowledge, is this: there are strictly speaking two types of WingTsun, one being the relatively simple, linear WingTsun of the SiuNimTau and Chum-Kiu forms and the second the curving WingTsun of the 3rd or Biu-Tze form, which is derived from the WT knife techniques. ChiSao training always begins with the relatively linear, prescribed “techniques” of the first two forms. Linear movements are the hardest to learn, as they are contrary to nature, which loves curves. Even very advanced students find linear techniques difficult under the influence of adrenalin, which is why ChiSao begins precisely with these. Once a student holding a higher or assistant teacher grade has learned the 3rd form, he begins to learn a completely different, almost opposite approach which has been so poorly understood that there are hardly any mottos (rules of thumb) pertaining to it. Lower-graded, uninitiated students are completely unable to cope with these slashing, sabre-like movements, and it would be unfair to confront them with these.

No footwork at first

While it is true that many things can be avoided with good footwork, it must not be used to avoid the necessity for developing the tactile sense. The closer we are to our opponent, the more our ability to give way is tested and therefore developed (hollowing the body out and leaning backward). Taking a step to the side or even to the rear to avoid the opponent’s pressure is a good way to defuse an attack in a real fight, but in training this answer deprives the student of a necessary learning process. It is not without reason that WingTsun says “Do not (unnecessarily) retreat”, or “Only give way so as to attack all the more effectively at once”.

Two types of pressure

1. Clinging

This should be so light that a fly trapped between our arm and that of our partner is not squashed. Our hand should only be “there”.

Classic psycho-physics, which concerns itself with the relationship between
the intensity of a stimulus and its perception, teaches us that with respect to sensual perception, the relationship between the stimulus and its perception is seldom linear (“Weber-Fechner law”). More pressure leads to less feeling! My student Tilmann Feistel drew my attention to the legendary Olympic champion in antiquity, Milo of Croton (see Pausanias VI/14,6): " … he could hold a pomegranate in such a way that he did not relinquish it to another who was exerting all his strength, but did not damage it with his own pressure either."

2. Sticking

This is a kind of sawing motion with forward pressure, and is based on skin tension (friction).

The most important classic attack in ChiSao

This is the palm-strike with a deeply penetrating attacking step into the partner’s stance – and the appropriate answer to it. This seems to be accepted as a matter of course in Europe, as it is a major component of the LT WingTsun style which I introduced into Europe on a broad basis in 1976. In Asia and America, where LT WingTsun is not so widespread, this is often a completely unknown exercise!

The inside PakSao and punch, on the other hand, is not very suitable as an attack, but more as a counter-attack or second counter under certain circumstances. Curiously, however, most of the partner forms begin with the questionable “PakSao/punch” attack. Indeed many rather exotic combinations actually require a partner who provides a template in the form of an inside PakSao/punch.

I call this inside PakSao “questionable” as an attack (!) because outside our incestuous WingTsun (i.e. except between WingTsun people), I consider it to have little practical importance. And because it entails numerous unnecessary risks for the user, which is why there is even a Chinese motto for it: “Avoid the inside PakSao”.

Creativity required, but only by the very advanced

Advanced students (higher grades) should no longer adopt their movements from the forms only on a 1:1 basis. In his great book “116 Wooden Dummy Techniques”, for example, my SiFu issues this warning: “Please understand that we never apply the techniques in the sequence in precisely the same way.” As he adds later, this not only applies to the sequence of movements, but also to the exact way they are performed. Progress is only possible where creativity is permitted, even encouraged. The criterion for acceptance must always be whether the movement discovered (but seldom invented) is in line with the eternal concepts of WingTsun.
