Chuck's Photography Tip of the Day: Don't Forget about your metering modes!!!
With the delluge of information available in DSLR photography, new photographers may feel overwhelmed and forget some extremely helpful basics. One of those basics is deciding which metering mode to use!
While the attached article talks about Nikon's 3 metering modes (matrix, center weighted, or spot), most if not all camera makers have some derivation of these. Forgetting to switch from matrix metering to center weighted metering when taking concert pictures, for example, can mean the difference between an image with blown out highlights (if you matrix metered), and a perfectly exposed shot full of color and appealing tonal range (if you used center weight metering)!

Plasma Device Could Revolutionize Energy Generation and Storage
Scientists at the University of Missouri have devised a new way to create and control plasma that could transform American energy generation and storage. Randy Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering, and his team developed a device that launches a ring of plasma at distances of up to two feet. Although the plasma reaches a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, it doesn’t emit radiation.

IRON MAN THREE: THIS WAS A COOL MOVIE!!!
My wife and youngest son went to see this last night and we were impressed!!! Fun, action packed, but also brought the "human" to a world dominated by "super humans/heroes" - very well done and hard to see how a NEW Iron Man will not be in the works after this. Let's face it, it made money - LOTS of it and is projected to surpass last year's Avengers BILLION DOLLAR PLUS showing (if it hasnt't already).

Another sunset example
Here is another example of a sunset image - of course, the Bride and Groom are the main subjects but the colorful sun-setting sky in the background certainly accentuates the shot!

3 Quick Tips for Photographing Sunsets
While there are other tips (and photographers write somewhat comprehensive articles on this subject), here are a few things to try the next time you want to nail that perfect sunset picture!
1) Underexpose: Typically, I underexpose sunset pix by 2/3 to a full stop (or more ) if sunset is farther off. Bracketing your shots at 1/3 stop intervals is always a safe bet!
2) Timing: The best, most colorful/vibrant sunset pix are usually just as the sun is about to touch the horizon or for a few minutes following the actual "setting" of the sun (the window of about 10 minutes before and after sunset).
3) Sunglasses: This is a personal decision but after doing this a while you realize that looking into the direction of the sun (Note: You should never look directly at the sun!), setting ... more »

Working with models
Escorts - My thoughts:
I am always amazed when a model asks me if it it alright if they bring an escort. The fact that some photographers do not allow models to bring an escort makes me look even better.
Who would want their daughter, girlfriend, or other female you care about to show up to a shoot with a strange man by themselves? Not me. When the subject comes up, I tell models that indeed, their escort is welcome. I then share with them the real concerns that some photographers have about escorts which are 1) the escort may get in the way of the creative flow of ideas and the creative mood. 2) the escort may get uptight at seeing their girlfriend in sexy poses, etc. and clam up, get moody and ruin it for the model. 3) the escort may egg the girlfriend on to be more provocative than either the photographer and model have previously agreed to or are... more »
