Gold Harbour, South Georgia, Antarctica this past December.  I don't think this fur seal is going to have much luck finding a place to relax!

I love fur seal pups - so cute with tons of personality.  And just when you think they can't get any cuter, estimate vary, but maybe as few as one in a thousand are born leucistic with blond color morph.

Back home from Antarctica at last!  You wouldn't know it is January in Alaska - 46 degrees and no snow!  I love these beautiful birds - King Penguin from South Georgia.

Long-tailed duck, Alaska Arctic.
You can see these beautiful ducks in Seward during the winter, but I have never been able to get close to one until last week in the Arctic. At first I was disappointed he turned away from me before doing a wing flap, that is until I saw the wonderful patterns on his back!

Although my photo tours are full, I’m leading one for Hugh Rose which I think has the potential to be my favorite trip of the year – and , it still has room!

This trip is timed to hit the amazing fall colors in the Brooks Range.  It will also place in in spectacular scenery in the heart of the aurora circle, which could provide us a dramatic northern lights show.  Plus, it places us in an Arctic village at the historic height of the whaling season, which not only brings in large numbers of polar bears, but may give us the opportunity to witness this culturally significant event.

Indian Paintbrush, Zion National Park, Utah.

We are home from a fun, but interesting trip.  Fun as we saw lots of beautiful country and did a couple of wonderful backpacking trips.  Interesting as in the weather.  Our past trips during that time of year to the same areas often featured highs in the 90's.  I teased my buddy Patrick a bit for bringing a down jacket, but in the end, I regretted not having mine.  This year we had more rain, cold weather and even snow then we would have back home of the Alaska Coast!  Pretty crazy, but it did lead to some unique photo opps!

This is looking the opposite direction up Nutirwik Creek from yesterdays photo.  It is interesting how different the colors in the aurora looked the other direction.

I can’t wait to get back for more!  I’m going to be in the area for four more nights in late August and early September, as part of a polar bear and autumn color photo tour I’ll be guiding for friend Hugh Rose.  With just 5 guests, and timed to hit the amazing autumn colors in the Brooks Range, I think this will be a great trip.  Throw in more auroras, and it could also be one colorful trip!  Here is the link to the trip:  http://www.hughrosephotography.com/arctic-autumn-landscapes-northern-lights-and-polar-bears/

This is in Bear Lagoon, Kenai Fjords National Park. We spent the night there last summer, but this image was actually from a trip a couple of years earlier. Thanks

Think I just met the world's smartest White-crowned Sparrow!

We had a red ant colony at our last campsite, and as you probably know, these little guys are impressive to watch as they are able to haul relatively large loads of food on their backs, and carry them long distances back to their holes.  Well one particular White-crowned Sparrow figured this out and would just stand near the opening to the colony and pick the bits of food off the backs of the unsuspecting ants!  He did it over and over.  Sometimes it would get the ant too, they most not taste too good as the sparrow would quickly spit it out, and then pick up just the piece of food.

It was entertaining to watch, and fascinating to see such a small animal develop a learned behavior.  Unfortunately I didn't capture any images of the interaction, this is a White-crowned Sparrow in camp last night.

Yesterday at Coyote Canyon.

A steady dose of 80 degree temps is really speeding up the wildflower bloom.  A week earlier, this was just a bunch of green plants.  Now, there is a fair amount of blooming Sand Verbena, along with a number of other species.  So far, it looks to be a pretty good year for Sand Verbena and Desert Lily, and maybe not as good for other photographer favorites like Desert Gold and Brittlebush, although it is still early.

Well that two weeks at home sure went fast!  We are now in Arizona picking up our RV then will head to Anza-Borrego.  We picked an expensive time to pass through Phoenix with a big golf tournament and even bigger football game taking place in the area this week.

It has rained off and on through out the first evening adding more rain to what has been a decent year for precipitation.  It has been a few years since we have had decent desert wildflowers, maybe this year will better.  More rain is in the forecast for the end of the week.

This is going to be a busy stretch of travel.  After 5 week in the desert, I'm home for 3 days before heading to the Arctic for a Northern Lights photo tour.

I have subscribed to Outdoor Photographer many, many years – long before becoming a full time photographer, really since my days as a beginning amateur.  Back then I would devour every issue as I was so hungry to read and learn anything and everything about outdoor photography.

I still subscribe today, now mainly to keep up with trends and friends – I am friends in one way or another with the authors of every major article in one recent issue.

So given this history, I must say I was very excited when they contacted us before my recent Antarctica trip looking for a high-res comp of an image for cover consideration.  That would be cool!  Days before leaving, they told us they would definitely use the image, if not for the cover as a Showcase image.  I had my fingers crossed!

Sitting on a plane between Atlanta and Seattle on my way home from a wonderful trip to South Georgia and Antarctica.  We had great weather / light wildlife, couldn't have asked for more!  The photo above was from New Year's eve near mid-night.

I have lots to share in the days ahead.  Right now, adjusting back to being connected.  It is weird to be so disconnected.  Just now learning of plane crashes, ferry fires and who made the NFL playoffs. Funny how that stuff doesn't matter when exploring scenery like this on the other end of the world  But, it is going to be great to be home!
