You can waste a lot of life waiting for somebody to do the right thing.

Why not do the right thing yourself?  Find somewhere else to be, among people you're not waiting for.

Today's Google Play Free Song of the Day is Janet Jackson's "All For You" from her 2001 album of the same name.  This is Janet at her Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis freest, most playful and sexy since the early 90s.

"All For You"
All my girls at the party
Look at that body
Shakin' that thing like you never did see
Got a nice package alright
'Cause I'm gonna have to ride it tonight

All my girls at the party
Look at that body
Shakin' that thing like you never did see
Got a nice package alright
Edit four, three, two, one

It's all for you
If you really want it
It's all for you
If you say you need it
It's all for you
If you gotta have it
It's all for you if you make a move
It's all for you

How can I pass up a Halfway to Halloween sign at my local music and video store, Bull Moose Music, without picking up a little something?  Got me a used DVD of "War of the Dead" (2011).  Here's a YouTube trailer for it:  War of the Dead New trailer 2012 HD 720p

I've already seen some zombie Nazis in the Norwegian movie, "Dead Snow" (2009), but how can you pass up any movie with good guys fighting zombie Nazis??

For the last few years, Congress's approval ratings have been dismal. A Gallup poll last month showed only 15 percent of Americans approve of how Congress is doing its job. Seventy-nine percent disapprove. Olympia Snowe is fed up with Congress, too. After 18 years in the U.S. Senate, the Maine Republican called it quits. When she announced she would not seek re-election in 2012, she cited increasingly partisan politics as a major factor. In her new political memoir, she tells how she went from being an orphan at age 9 to a GOP lawmaker known for reaching across the aisle. Her take on what’s wrong with Congress and how to fix it.

You have to admire a structure that makes even the oldest Egyptian pyramids seem new in comparison.  Gobekli Tepe's oldest parts are dated as 11,000 years old.

The oldest pyramid is 4,700 years old, and when humans were visiting and living at that new place we call Gobekli Tepe the Hebrews did not yet exist, nor did their god called Yahweh.  Now, that's old.

But, it still only shows us a snapshot of what was based on the bits that remain for our study and wonder.  Humans (or maybe Neanderthals, our extinct human brother species) were painting cave walls at Cave of El Castillo in present-day Spain 40,000 years ago.  Paintings in France's Chavet Cave are dated at 30,000 years ago, and Lascaux's brilliant and powerful images of Europe's mega-fauna (now mostly extinct) were painted by human hands over 17,000 years ago, when Rome was far off and overtime... more »

This week's iTunes Free Single of the Week is Emma Louise's "Boy" from her album, Vs Head vs Heart, which drops today.

"Boy"
You've got sparks
It's not enough and we make time
Speaking sheets
And closed doors to dull out words, whoa

But all you do is lay around
Spending time
Smoking cigarettes
Boy you know your heart's so big
And you could love
Give it all you got
Sitting in clouds of smoke
Waiting all alone
Why?
Talking to me on the phone
When you're feeling low

We made plans
But you don't see them keeping space
And open eyes and empty minds
You're not anywhere, whoa

But all you do is lay around
Spending time
Smoking cigarettes
Boy you know your heart's so big
And you couldlove

The American Red Cross is the best way to reach out and help Oklahoma City.  You can text $10 too.

"If you want to send a $10 donation to the Disaster Relief fund via text message, you can do so by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999. As in the case with other donations via mobile, the donation will show up on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your balance if you have a prepaid phone. You need to be 18 or older, or have parental permission, to donate this way. (If you change your mind, text the word STOP to 90999.)

Phone: 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767); for Spanish speakers, 1-800-257-7575; for TDD, 1-800-220-4095."

Even if you don't like Country music you owe it to yourself to listen to Keith Urban's style of Country music.  Fortunately, right now you can do that for free.  Google Play's Free Song of the Day is Urban's "'Til Summer Comes Around" from his 2009 album, Defying Gravity.

I'm not sure it's worthwhile to point out that Angelina Jolie "forgot" to mention statistics; she was telling a personal story, not acting as public health commissioner.

But, using her name and implying that she held out on us will probably put more eyes on the screen.

The attached opinion pieces remains interesting, though.

The takeaways:
99% of women do not carry the BRCA1 mutation that raises the risk of breast cancer.
Women should look at family history before getting tested for the mutation.

It is a false assertion that sarcasm is justified against the stupid or the rude or the mean-spirited.  Sarcasm just puts one in the same box as the opposition.

There is a difference between sarcasm among friends and sarcasm designed to harm.  But, no matter what, sarcasm is a lower form of communication that arises from a position of weakness in a place of hiding.

It's OK to speak your mind.  You'll get it wrong much of the time.  But, how else would you ever know the difference between what you know and what you need to understand if you never have the courage to speak from a position of authority in a place of authenticity?

When you get it wrong simply say, I got it wrong.  I now understand that (fill in the blank).  No need for fuss or mea culpas.  Grown ups correct on the fly and adjust to new conditions; it's seldomdramat... more »

Relationships are super complicated.  Especially when you're trapped in a storage facility with a murderous creature.

Decently made with some quirky characters.  Dragged here and there, mostly a retread of stuff we've seen before.

Netflix blurb:
In this creepy thriller, an emergency power shutdown in London leaves four friends trapped by random circumstances in a cavernous storage facility. Before long, the group realizes that something lethal is inside the darkened warehouse with them.

This is one of my favorite Brueghels.  I would love to say it's because of its amazing use of narrative in character, tone and color.  But really it's because you just know that when Rocko Red Cap there snags that pie the tray is gonna flip and the rest of the pies are gonna go flying.  Yoiks!

The world, and therefore Plus too, is filled with angry people.

Unless you raised them, stole their birthday or killed their dog, you did not cause their anger.  Therefore, you are not responsible for their crappy life.  You have no debt to them.

Angry people just want you to feel hurt so they can feel like they suck less in comparison.

Exhaust and confound them by refusing to be part of their sick dance.

Eventually, the really bright ones will come around and decide to let it go and have a nice day.

I've always grown sugar pumpkins for eating, and last year I put in a hill of the Mammoth variety and my neighbors all got a giant pumpkin for their doorsteps.  This year, in addition to sugar and mammoth, I'm trying a test hill of these beauts:  French Pumpkin; aka, Rouge Vif D'etampes; aka, The Cinderella Pumpkin.

I saw of these at last year's Common Ground Fair and determined to try them this year.

The trick is to keep all these varieties well separated.  Pumpkins and squashes readily cross pollinate, and I depend on seeds harvested from the previous year to give me the pumpkins I expect the next year.

Avocados can improve your health
and help your skin look even better.

Ultra Marathoner Rich Roll has extolled the benefits of avocados as part of a health-improving diet:  “…PlantPower is not fat-free. Nor, in my opinion, should it be. Fat associated with the typical American diet is your enemy. But PlantPower fat, in modest amounts, is your friend. There’s this confusing business of EFAs — the essential fatty acids which must be obtained from food and are crucial to a wide array of bodily functions. And yet many people suffer from a deficiency caused by an imbalance of these crucial fats, which leads to unhealthy skin conditions. Reduce your omega-6 and increase your omega-3 intake.”

A well-rounded diet includes plant-based foods that are high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, such as avocado! Here's how to slip more omega-3s into your daily diet andhelp yo... more »

TCM is showing "Mary of Scotland."  Beautifully filmed, it whizzes history down its leg in incandescent black and white.  Katharine Hepburn, deserving of every award earned in her long career, takes an early career turn as Mary, Queen of Scotland, and chews the scenery along with all of her costars.  It's a hoot.

Attached is a loving video tribute to the movie.  The music, unless I'm mistaken, is a John Murphy composition used in the movie "28 Days Later."

Authentic atheists are a small minority and probably have interesting brains that have much to teach us about ourselves.   True atheists will never be a majority except maybe in the room at atheist conventions.  It's OK.  Atheists, never stop your works and your struggles.  We need you.

Voltaire famously said, "If god did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him."

More recently, brain research is pointing to the idea that humans in societies seem to naturally develop communal spirituality.

Does that mean that we give up and allow people to use religion to make decisions that impact our lives?  It does not.

It means that we understand that spirituality is the condition and religion is often how the condition shows itself.   We seem to need spirituality, divinities, entities and powers outside of ourselves.  But, that doesn'tmean we... more »

One of the movie's big plot points is a girl with her tongue cut out.  Throughout the entire movie, nobody hands the American teenager a pen and paper and says, "Here, honey.  Sorry about your tongue, but you still have fingers, so how about writing down what you know?"

Sloppy.

Apart from that, decent ghost story fare.

Released this year by the same folks who brought you "The Last Exorcism."

"The Frankenstein Theory" is another in the found-footage genre of horror movies.  It's not fantastic, but it's also not terrible as long you can buy into its central conceit: that the Frankenstein story is non-fiction.  More suspenseful than frightening.  There is no graphic onscreen violence, though you do see some blood and aftermath.

Neflix's write up:
Professor John Venkenheim leads a documentary film crew to the rim of the Arctic Circle in a desperate effort to vindicate his academic reputation. Venkenheim and his team search for the legendary monster, a creature mired in mystery and drenched in blood. What they find is an unspeakable truth more terrifying than any fictional nightmare from which there is no waking.

A beauteous butte of grass clippings. Onto that, as I do every year, I'll dump a yard or two of soil and plant the Monster pumpkin seeds in that. The butte keeps the seeds off the swampy ground, the decomposing clippings heat the soil and seedlings roots from below during the iffy nighttime temps of Maine, and all of it takes place way out back where the vines can spread all they want.

A Salty Dog

Tattered sails
Swell with breath
My battered boat
Groans and complains
As it’s guided from
Safe harbor to the
Cold and merciless sea
By invisible hands

I am weary of adventures
Scarred from fighting monsters
Hideous ones
Beautiful ones

All I ever wanted was a cat
A hearth, a dram, a meal
A woman who knew how to sew
A roof and wall to guard against
The cruelties of winter

But fate decrees that I am bound
Bound to the mast
Bound to the sea

Whatever rocky coast
Is my new home
I’ll tell my story there

Whatever rocky coast
Is my new home
I’ll tell my story there

Soil got its last spring tilling. Next step is raking out the rows. Then planting.

Not sure the picture shows the change in soil color, foreground to background. The foreground is former turf, newly claimed for gardening.

The background is what the foreground looks like after years of composting.

Why the new Google+ rocks for writers.

Some writers are less than gruntled about Google+'s new design. Here's why they should love it.

The complaint goes like this: The new Google+ emphasizes pictures and de-emphasizes words, which is a Pinterest-like move that panders to non-readers and disadvantages the word people.

This whole argument is false, and here's why:

Falsehood #1: You need a lot of words, not a picture, to promote writing.

It's false because that's how the most successful books are promoted: with pictures, not a wall of words. Ask any book jacket designer.

Falsehood #2: A "card" doesn't have enough information to convey what's in a written work.

In fact, that's how libraries were organized for centuries -- with a catalog of cards.

Time to till the garden again!  Last tilling was in April, to get things woken up and stirred about.  Now I'll till again in preparation for raking out the rows later today or tomorrow.  Then, late next week, I plant.  Today is the first phase of the moon. Late next we'll head into the full moon, which appears Saturday.  I'm taking three days off late next week.

Trivia:  May's full moon is sometimes called the corn planting moon and is the moon associated with the twins, Castor & Pollux--one in the air, one underground--and their constellation, Gemini.

We spend the same time and energy and belief on convincing ourselves to be the happiest and most wealthy that we used to spend on creating security and sustainability in our social organization.

Our efforts should contribute to our personal well-being and needs.  But, those efforts mean nothing if we wake up feeling isolated and lonely and the human world around us is crumbling.

Best of all is when your personal well-being and needs are incidentally met by your efforts because they harmonize with the well-being and satisfaction of the world around you.

Try not to put too much faith in fear-peddlers, those who treat you like you are too stupid to understand something and must have it explained to you.  They do not care about you and will casually abandon or destroy you if doing so serves their agenda.

Fear-peddlers use their voice like an anti-laugh track.  Such people often employ a forceful tone that drips with disgust and sarcasm to try to influence your feelings about the topics or people under discussion.  Cheap trick, but surprisingly effective among those who already feel insecure or fearful.

Also, enjoying a performance/book/image is not the same thing as endorsing the politics or ideas expressed in the thing.   You can actually read "Mein Kampf," for example, without fear that doing so will magically turn you into a goose-stepping Nazi.

Finally, if your mind cannot contain contradictory ideas,wor... more »

GLAD TO BE IMPERFECTLY AWFUL - MEET CHARITY VANDERBILT

For reasons we might want to explore at some other time, I spent over 30 years toiling in the corporate vineyards as an advertising copywriter – an occupation which enjoys a level of social prestige roughly equivalent to that of garbage collector, lawyer, and snake oil salesman – although to be sure – the latter group is begrudgingly afforded a modicum of respect since almost everyone abhors a squeaky snake. I know I do.

But I digress. Writers, as you know, are a disreputable lot. As a rule they live in culverts, subsist on scraps of food left by others in greasy spoon diners on the outskirts of town, frequently showing up for work with three day’s of stubble, pockets crammed with losing lottery tickets, reeking of bourbon and cheap cigars. The men are even worse!

As a bipolar dipsomaniac with a chronic attitudeproblem... more »

"Wonderful"
by Gary Go

The person that you were has died
You’ve lost the sparkle in your eyes
You fell for life - into its traps
Now you wanna bridge the gaps
Now you wanna bridge the gaps
Now you want that person back

And all your ammunition’s gone
Run out of fuel to carry on
You don’t know what you wanna do
Cause what you want does not want you
If what you want does not want you
And you’ve got no pull to pull you through

Say “I am”
Say “I am”
Say “I am wonderful"

Say “I am”
Say “I am”
Say “I am wonderful"

If what you’ve lost cannot be found
And the weight ofthe world weighs you down

Here's a puzzler.  What is happening when my boombox's power switch--which clicks from CD to Off to Radio FM and Radio AM--malfunctions so that I have to wiggle it to get the speakers to play the sound?

Is something I can repair?  Or, is it time to find a new boombox for the laundry room?

Those are three novels by our own +Judith McGuinness.

Thank you so much, Judith! I'm now going to call Marilyn and say, "They're here!"

It's always more fun when you know the author.

Or the poet, or painter, or songwriter, or photographer-- My not so subtle hint to support our resident artists.

Did you ever +1 something without intending to, move to correct the errant finger brush, but then you think, man, I don't want to seem mean or like a tease? So, you leave the misplaced +1.

And then mutter under your breath about frakin' First World problems as you return to those activities that score you the filthy lucre.
