Mammatus (or mammory) clouds describe the cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud. These clouds are often associated with severe thunderstorms and are typically composed primarily of ice.

Here's a baby Tasmanian Devil

And although Tasmanian Devils have been dying from a very strange contagious cancer called "devil facial tumor disease" there's hope for this little one. A vaccine could be on the way. It's a fascinating story and breakthrough, and a recommended read especially if you are interested in immunology. Read more here:

On April 17, a paper arrived in the inbox of the Annals of Mathematics. Written by a mathematician virtually unknown to the experts in his field — a 50-something lecturer at the University of New Hampshire named Yitang Zhang — the paper claimed to have taken a huge step forward in understanding one of mathematics’ oldest problems, the twin primes conjecture.  And it had!  Rumors swept through the mathematics community that a great advance had been made by a researcher no one seemed to know — someone whose talents had been so overlooked after he earned his doctorate in 1992 that he had found it difficult to get an academic job, working for several years as an accountant and even in a Subway sandwich shop.

For the whole story read this:

Roses are Red, Blood Cells Blue

The heart is a symbol of love, and on this Mother's Day, let's consider the cardiovascular changes in a pregnant mother. As the sole provider of nourishment to the baby, the mother's cardiac output (blood volume) increases by 50% during pregnancy...that's an extra liter and half. Her heart will enlarge and beat faster, by about 15 beats/min. The growing fetus pushes her heart upwards and to the left. She will need more red blood cells to carry extra oxygen, although the increased numbers do not keep up with the blood volume. The higher requirement for iron and the dilution of red cells in blood can make mama-to-be tired and anemic.

A pregnant woman is hypercoagulable: more likely to form clots. This is thought to be an evolutionary precaution against hemorrhaging after delivery, but it puts the motherat ... more »

Break through in flu vaccine production

Science collaboration involving Craig Venter Institute and Novartis* and others  have developed a revolutionary way to synthetic create (non-enzymatically create the sequences) pandemic flu vaccines to order in  weeks rather than months earlier. Timing is everything when it comes to preventing new pandemics.

A Boy and His Atom

⚛ How do you make the world's smallest movie? By moving atoms, one at a time. Certified by the Guinness Book of World Records, this stop motion animation made by IBM nanophysicists only lasts 60 seconds and shows a tiny atomic "boy" jumping on an atomic trampoline and playing with his ball atom, magnified 100 million times. It took 242 frames, each made by a scanning tunneling microscope that weighs 2 tons and operates at -268 degrees Celsius (or 450.5 degrees below zero on the Fahrenheit scale). A needle comes within 1 nanometer of each atom (actually diatomic carbon monoxide), grabs and drags it across the surface of a tiny chip to a new location..you can hear the dragging sound in the "behind the scenes" movie.

⚛ Why was this movie made? According to Moore's Law, chip performance doubles every 18 months, as theind... more »

H7N9: A virus worth watching

Thanks to the two Virology Hangouts on Air that +Scott Lewis and I hosted ("Going Viral" - SciSunHOA from 28 April, 2013 and http://goo.gl/1WO5Q), I have viruses on my mind (in a good way!). So it was with interest that I read about the recent outbreaks of H7N9 in China. If you want a nice primer on why influenza strains have these letters to their name, read +Deeksha Tare's post here (which explains the significance of Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase: http://goo.gl/CnQLX).

H7N9 is an animal influenza A virus that has crossed the species barrier to infect humans. The first human infection was reported in China two months ago, and the latest WHO report confirms a total of 108 cases and 22 deaths thus far. The virus has now spread beyond mainland China as a case has been reported in Taiwan.

Ring is a vibrating alarm clock that fits over the finger to gently and noiselessly rip slumberers from their states of peace. It is ideal for couples, the hearing impaired, and people who associate the sound of their wake up call with aural torture akin to contemporary pop stars singing live without Auto tune.

From Mars, With Love

This valentine from Mars is actually a pit formed by collapse within a straight-walled trough known in geological terms as a graben. Graben are formed along fault lines by expansion of the bedrock terrain. The heart-shaped pit is about 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) at its widest.

Deadly Datura

Datura inoxia , or night blooming moon flower, has many alkaloid poisons and nerve toxins that the Aztecs and native Americans used in medicine to heal wounds and block pain. Too much of the "medicine" results in delirium, bizarre behavior and amnesia. Still, it's an ornamental flower in many gardens!

Using the Internet and Social Media the Right Way
Over the last year and a half I have met some really great musicians here on Google+. I would like to take this opportunity to mention one of my favorite bands on Google+ and comment on what they're doing right.

1. Engagement: Unlike many musicians on social networks, +Moonalice engages and interacts with everyone on a variety of topics, while at the same time they make it very easy to find their music. Prioritizing engagement and diversity of content over massively distributing their own music is an approach that more musicians should follow.

2. Sharing for free can go a long way: +Moonalice takes sharing to the next level. For example, they stream all of their live shows for free (see www.moonalice.com for links). The combination of engagement on social platforms and sharing live shows is a recipe forsu... more »

Tiny Parrot, Big Spoon

This 3-day-old Edward's Fig Parrot (also known as a Scarlet-cheeked Fig Parrot) is being hand fed, after it hatched at Prague's Zoo Praha on April 5. Usually found in humid lowland forests in northeastern New Guinea, it is rare to breed them in captivity. Don't worry about his looks...he's going to grow up to be green with red breast and cheeks, and a yellow crown. See how handsome he will be ▶ http://goo.gl/oht7j

Steven Tyler's Vocal Folds - up close and personal

Today is World Voice Day - a day we honour and celebrate our voices and the incredible physiology that makes our voices loud and proud.

The vibrations of our vocal folds (aka vocal chords) translate into the sounds we hear as speech or song. From Crazy  (http://goo.gl/w47Zk) to Walk This Way,  (http://goo.gl/pK2It), Steven Tyler's vocal folds vibrate more than 500,000 times during a single concert, covering the equivalent of more than 6 miles.

In the +National Geographic video below, you can get an up close view of Tyler's vocal folds in action, and an inside view of how all of our bodies create sounds, even if we can't quite hit the high notes of Dream On.  (http://goo.gl/fmqZN)

Spring

☼ Pictures from my spring garden (and bunny!), although we have leap-frogged into summer. The iris and azalea I shared last spring are not out yet ▶ http://goo.gl/sMmFU

"Now that the winter's gone, the earth hath lost
Her snow-white robes, and now no more the frost
Candies the grass, or casts an icy cream
Upon the silver lake or crystal stream;
But the warm sun thaws the benumbed earth,
And makes it tender; gives a sacred birth
To the dead swallow; wakes in hollow tree
The drowsy cuckoo and the humble-bee.
Now do a choir of chirping minstrels bring
In triumph to the world the youthful spring.
The valleys, hills, and woods in rich array
Welcome the coming of the long'd-for May".
