In response to the AG office blowing through 1st amendment press rights looks like some of the MSM is starting to try and bring 'dark-nets' one step closer to common usage.

I've always been of two minds on this kind of abuse; one mind says we should be storming the offices of these bastards with pitchforks and torches, and a 'second mind' that says "good, bring it on, this will only force us to all use really secure and open source technology to defeat your abuse, making us all safer and in control of our information" ... this is a good step towards the 'second mind'.

Old news from last fall, but the first I'm hearing of it.

Seems some D.A.s are in league with debt collectors to essentially defraud people. The D.A. sells the rights to their official letterhead to the debt collectors who then use the letterhead to trick people into thinking they are in danger of going to prison, but for only $180 plus debt charges you can take a course (which the debt collectors and D.A. get a kick back.)

The practice, which has spread to more than 300 district attorneys’ offices in recent years, shocked Angela Yartz when she was threatened with conviction over a $47.95 check to Walmart. A single mother in San Mateo, Calif., Ms. Yartz said she learned the check had bounced only when she opened a letter in February, signed by the Alameda County district attorney, informing her that unless she paid $280.05 — including $180 for a “financial accountability”class —... more »

Wife's laptop died, so I had to buy her a new one quickly ... couldn't find a damn place in all of Toronto that sold laptops without having to pay for the stupid Windows preinstalled OS ...we are strictly a Linux household, but for some reason Microsoft has all the Computer resellers working enforcement in collecting their Windows Tax.

The only place that even entertained the idea of selling a laptop without Windows installed still wanted to change me full prices, plus an extra $100 to have Windows removed.

The must be a law against this ... why can't I buy a laptop without Windows installed? Why am I forced to pay Microsoft for somehting I don't want on my computer?

Canadians, please sign this petition to help stop the greedy cell service providers (Telus at this point, with a new $0.40 per message charge, but no one can doubt that Rogers and Bell will soon follow if Telus ges away with it) from adding arbitrary charges to text messaging.

We need to force the government to uphold their own rules and stop the extreme gouging by the big 3 providers, making Canada just about the most expensive place on earth to communicate.

Anyone in Toronto interested in playing friendly and competitive (emphasis on the friendly) rec level softball in a long established league that plays in the Downtown Toronto area? (Stanley, Riverdale, and Greenwood parks.) Any skill level welcomed.

+Google+ anyone know if you can change the default sort order of the G+ 'Trend' streams? ('Best of' vs 'Most Recent')

I continually find myself reading though some posts on the trend feed and wanting to respond, but then realizing that the feed is sorted by 'Best of', and that the post is months and months old.

I'd much prefer that the default be 'Most Recent' as that is what I would expect from a 'Trend' feed ... not some old conversation that just happened to be on the topic from way back in 2011.

Bank Regulators Unable or Unwilling to Control Bank Crime

As much as I like Warren and wish her a long and effective Senate career, let's not make what she just did into a story about Elizabeth Warren (like much of the main stream media is attempting to do) and make it about the banks, their regulators, and the 'pretend policing and justice system for Bank executives'.

This story is about the banks and the bank regulators, their crimes and the refusal of the regulators to do anything other than a bogus 'profit sharing scheme' where the banks steal money from the people, and the bank regulators make them share a small portion of those stolen profits with the bank regulators.

Well, this weeks TWiT was certainly insulting to Linux ... Apple evangelists calling Linux "an OS of no importance' (I'd love to see a 'turn off Linux for a day' day and let them see how "unimportant" Linux seems then?)

TWiT should apologize by having a TWiT with all Linux evangelists as guests in the near future (I really don't see how Leo can call his network a network for geeks, when they barely even acknowledge that Linux exists .. it's be like calling your network a 'automotive network' and only ever acknowledging the top two car manufacturers models. )

Sure, Linux may not have a large desktop following, but until tech evangelists start paying attention to the REAL 'most important' OS, and stop over hyping the 'pretty tech' from the likes of Apple/MS (and even Android), then they are not doing those wanting to knows... more »

How would the NRA world actually work if they were to have their way and everyone carried a firearm?

Just take the case where we put armed guards in every school or classroom.

What would these guards actually do if they saw some guy walking in the school hallway armed? They are suppose to protect the children, so one would assume that he would be required to shoot first, ask questions later.

But, what if that person was just some father coming to pick up his kid for a doctors appointment or some such reason?

Maybe one could say, "but why was her armed, he should not be armed on school property." But I'd imagine that the NRA would take exception to that kind of statement, as one would assume that they would argue that the father has just as much right to be armed in order to protect his children as the security guard.

Had to istall Windows 7 for the first time in years. Someone wanted me to fix a broken RAID device with NTFS partitions, so I figured the easiest way would be to dig out my old Windows 7 CD and run some Windows based RAID recovery software.

Well, what a PITA installing Windows 7 is .. maybe it's because my CD is old and it doesn't have the updated drivers, but on my laptop where I have 4 or 5 partitions of differing Linux installations, the only thing I ever had to do to get all my hardware working was to push the button to install the restricted drivers for my NVidia video care (not even really needed, but that's beside the point.)

For the Windows install I had to download drivers for almost every device on my machine .. video, sound, LAN, wireless, synaptic touchpad, and while the USB hubs worked there were updates suggested for all of them.

Things I'd like to see as a community admin:

1 - sub categories
2 - moving posts between categories
3 - The unread marks on categories should not disappear from all the categories when you read one category.
4 - Stickies: preferably at least one sticky for each category.
5 - merging: so one can clean up all those 'introductory' posts and move them all under one single main post (I joined several communities that are basically useless as they are just pages and pages of "great community' posts.)

ETA:

6 - Community specific search (even category specific search if possible.)
7 - not a specific request as such, but some though needs to be done by all community owners/admins as to what their policy on banning is going to be. Since these communities make a lot of people defacto 'forum owners' only different from Google in... more »
