Into Darkness

Another image from the Rome Workshop led by +Luca Cesari and +Michael Diblicek.
This time I wasn't satisfied by the result of the shot itself (I did imagine something different, unfortunately it was almost raining and the light didn't help me out..), so I decided to process it in a totally different way.
As you can see the final result is a kind of silhouette image, with strong contrasts and cloud streaks (~90 seconds exposure at f/16, with a 13-stops ND filter).
Oh btw, guess what? The shot was taken at 1 pm! :P

Perpetual Motion
Piazza di Spagna, Rome, Italy.
During the amazing LE workshop in Rome, I had the chance to experiment with some motion blur (a technique I had never tried before) under the wise supervision of the instructors +Luca Cesari and +Michael Diblicek.
I must confess I had fun while taking the series of shots from which this image comes from, together with my workshop colleagues +Charles Paul Azzopardi and +Matteo Pedalà.. Just a few minutes later we had to dash off due to rain drops! :)
This shot was taken from the famous Spanish Steps just above Piazza Di Spagna in Rome, Italy.
I chose to call it "Perpetual Motion" because of the endless passage of tourists across this well-known square, at any hour of the day (and most of the night as well!)

I worked for quite some time on this photo to enhance and emphasize its geometrical shapes and lines, that's why I decided to play with a mix of light/shadows and strong contrasts.
My very first idea was to take some long exposures, in order to capture the cloud streaks in the sky. Unfortunately that day it was all gray and dull, so I went for normal shots instead of LE.
In post-processing I opted for a pure black sky to eliminate any distraction.
Even if this is the first image I processed in this way (and the technique is still very embryonic), I like how it came out!

Extraordinary experience!
I truly want to thank +Luca Cesari and +Michael Diblicek (also known as Professor Sticklicek..) for the amazing and instructive 3 days of workshop here in Rome!
I had so much fun with you and I could learn so many things about Architectural Long Exposures, Motion Blur shots and Time Lapses!
Both of you are GREAT instructors :-)
It doesn't happen very often to have a permit to use tripods to photograph some of the most famous monuments in the world (the Colosseum, Trevi's fountain, the Pantheon, the Square Colosseum and so on)! It was a real privilege, and another reason to thank you.
This workshop also gave me the chance to meet two other great photographers and now friends, +Charles Paul Azzopardi and +Matteo Pedalà. It was really nice to meet you guys!

Me on top of the Shard - Behind The Scenes
The Shard, London, UK
You know I don't usually post photos of me or behind the scenes shots, but I particularly liked this one.
It was taken by my girlfriend with her Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, while we were on top of The Shard (currently the highest skyscraper in Europe) during our latest trip to London.
No need to say that the view from the panoramic floor on top of The Shard is breathtaking.. Totally worth the quite expensive (30 pounds/each) ticket!

Sony World Photography Awards - Exhibition
Somerset House, London, UK
As promised to my good friend +Julia Anna Gospodarou (shortlisted in the Architecture category), yesterday I went to the SWPA Exhibition at Somerset House here in London.
Ok, yes, I'm in London till Monday evening, but I couldn't say anything before now because it was a surprise for my sister's birthday! She lives in London and she IS on Google+ :P
It was an amazing exhibition, with so many wonderful photos hanging all over the walls of the West Wing (you can get more information here: http://www.worldphoto.org/worldphotolondon/exhibitions/).
It's a pity that only the winner, 2nd place and 3rd place's artists were showcased.. Shortlisted photos were just looping through a TV monitor in a corner.

Bigger Cover Photo!
I finally decided to update my profile to the big cover photo layout (yes, I was still using the separated scrapbook images!)
What do you think about my new cover? Do you like it? Does it show up well?
I'm still struggling against G+ to have my cover photo in the exact aspect I uploaded it. Actually it should be a bit sharper (like in the original format), but I think I'm at a good point.
I also used the suggested max size (i.e. 2120x1192 pixels) but it seems G+ is still cropping/resizing it to 2048x1152px, making it a bit less crisp grrrr..
Any idea? Thank you in advance :)
UPDATE: I tried to re-size the original photo in Photoshop CS5 by saving it directly to 2048x1152px, but it seems G+ is still cropping/re-adjusting it! Unbelievable :P

New Shoulder Bag
Wohoo, I've just received a belated (but always welcome) birthday present: a shiny new Manfrotto Bella VI shoulder bag!
I so needed one of them, because I just had a camera backpack until today. Now I can easily and safely carry around my camera during shootings :)

I-AM-SPEECHLESS
Big news today: my first interview ever went live!
I am really honored and I want to thank my friend +Kami Naru and her blog (located at http://photoartists-united.blogspot.it) for the interest in my photographies!
I must admit it took me some hours to answer all the questions, since it was my first time with this kind of things. I hope that what I wrote makes any sense :P

Myself in Low-Key
I know, I know.. I usually don't shoot people! But this time it's not people, it is ME :)
To be honest it was my first attempt in self-portraits, that's why it took me some time to figure out even a simple set-up. I used a single Nikon Speedlight SB-25 (I've got only that little one) positioned to the right of my face, at a distance of about 30-40 cm and limited to 1/64th of its power.
I would have liked to try to use also a dish reflector on the left side, but actually I don't have one :P
I will probably buy one of them and re-try this kind of shot in the future.
Anyway, I had much fun shooting myself! I will do better next time!

The Gherkin and the Moon

This is a re-processing of one of my old architectural shots from London.
I wanted to give it a try with Nik's Silver Efex Pro 2 (which I didn't use at the time) and it came out quite well I think :)
The subject is obviously the well-known 30 St Mary Axe skyscraper (formerly Swiss Re Building and informally called The Gherkin by people, for its curious shape), one of the most famous buildings in London.
I cannot wait to go back there!

Positano Beach in B&W
Positano, Costiera Amalfitana, Italy
This is the B&W version of a photo I posted quite some time ago, from my little trip to the fabulous Amalfi Coast in 2012.
Technically it is a 6-images stitched panorama taken handheld, and then converted to B&W using Nik's Silver Efex Pro 2.

Tuscan Panorama
Val D'Orcia, Tuscany, Italy
This is a 6-images stitched panorama (handheld) of the wonderful Val D'Orcia in Tuscany, Italy.
The little town on top of the hill in the right part of the photo is Pienza, considered the "touchstone of Renaissance urbanism" and declared a World Heritage Site in 1996 by UNESCO.

STOLEN CAMERA GEAR!
One of my biggest fears came into reality yesterday.
My camera bag, full of almost everything I own has been stolen. (except for a 200€ flashgun I accidentally left at home).
It all happened while I was having lunch, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in a small bar in the city center of Milan. My backpack was between my chair (which I never left) and a solid concrete wall; I still can’t believe they succeeded in taking that cumbersome 10+kg backpack without me even noticing.
Side note – just to give you a smile: I was drinking still water at the time.
It’s pretty hard to get insured if you’re not a professional here in Italy, so no chance of getting ANY money back.

The Face | Smoky Lines II
At first I didn't spot it.
Then, while processing the photo, I began to see this happy face made of smoke. It seems like it was portrayed from a side view.

Liquid Smoke | Smoky Lines series I
Many of you will agree that this is something totally different from what I usually do. I happened to see some amazing smoke photography shots around the net, so I decided to give it a try :)
Following a couple video tutorials on youtube, I built my "studio set" to take the photos: black paper background + 2 off-camera flashes positioned to the sides of the smoke source (the traditional incense sticks!) and wirelessly triggered by my D7000).
This is the first image of a series I decided to call Smoky Lines, others will follow as soon as I process them (I have like 700 RAW shots to be processed yet :P)
Suggestions and advices are more than welcome, since this was my first attempt ever in smoke photography!

Sea of Clouds

This is the strange but dreamy view I found at my window, during my recent trip to Tuscany.
I chose the B&W processing because it seemed to fit very well the mood of this cloudscape :)

Sunset over Tuscan hills
Hills near Siena, Tuscany, Italy.
I was driving to Siena when I happened to look at the rear-view mirror and got a glimpse of a wonderful sunset over the hills. I had to pull over my car and take some shots! :)
In post-processing I tried to use low values for hdr corrections (composed in Photomatix with 3 RAW exposures at -2,0,+2), in order to keep the photo as real as I could.
Obviously I enhanced some colors in LR, but overall the result is almost the same as the sunset I was admiring that day!

Leading Lines
Shame on me!
I've been so busy during the last 36-48 hours that I totally forgot to submit MY contribution to the #MonochromeMonday theme (curated by +Charles Lupica +Hans Berendsen +Jerry Johnson and also guest curated this week by me)!
Since I live in West Alaska (j/k), it's still Monday and thus I'm still on time to contribute :P
Jokes apart, this is the new modern building which encloses the ancient Ara Pacis in Rome, in order to preserve and protect it.
I've chosen the details of the ceiling because I love its leading lines and geometry.

Siena At Dusk
Piazza Del Campo, Siena, Italy.
After a long walk I was very lucky to arrive in Piazza Del Campo at the perfect moment, so I could capture the awesome dusk colors of this famous square!
This is a stitched panorama of 6 RAW shots taken handheld. For this panorama I decided to follow another way than usual: I "pre-processed" the 6 photos in Adobe Lightroom to reduce the noise and the lens distortion before stitching them together, then I post-processed the resulting image in LR (again) to enhance colors and contrast a bit.
I must admit that I liked this new process and the result very much. I will use it again for all my future panoramas :)

Flaming Sky

After a period of inactivity (my apologies!) it seems I'm able again to post some new photos, yay!
The one below is from my most recent trip to Tuscany, Italy. I had the chance to admire and capture this breathtaking sunset and its silhouettes. Colors weren't altered in post-processing, as you can see they were truly amazing!

New Filters and Backpack
My apologies if I haven't been much active lately (last month or so), but I could hardly find any spare time to log in here. Job and some other stuff I'm taking care of kept me away from internet almost at all!
I didn't have the time to properly test my new D7000 even! :)
Plus, I was still waiting for some equipment I ordered weeks ago. Now that everything has arrived, I'm much happier :D
As you can see in the photo, I just received my new ND/CPL/UV filters, a shutter release timer and a backpack to carry all of it. I figured I didn't have a bag for the new camera, so I decided to buy that amazing backpack (Lowepro Vertex 200 AW).
