This shot is just at the end of the sunset that seemed to take us all by surprise. I've been trying for a haunting blue hour shot like this for a while, pretty happy with this.

The Veins of LA
That day I got stuck in LA rush hour traffic. Well I stayed the night in LA and shot around for a little bit. I met up with some photography friends and hit some spots that have been on my list.
This is a 3 shot vertical pano. I have been doing a lot more panoramas lately. They seem more challenging I would like haha. I think it might be time to invest in some L brackets or a more serious pano head to make the post process part a bit less stressful. w/ +Bobby Gibbons and +Khris Griffis

McWay Milky Way
Most people on their birthday and Friday night would probably head to the bar. 8pm and I was thinking about doing just that, but really wasn't feeling it. So as I usually do, I decided to up the car with enough stuff to stay a week and drive 3 hours down to Big Sur. As I got down there it was pretty foggy, stopped by Brixy Bridge and it was too foggy. I was starting to get doubts about my 3 hour adventure. I decided to still head to McWay Falls, hoping it would be clear. I finally got there, and couldn't be happier. I could see the Milky Way with my naked eye, guess it was time to get shooting. I tried shooting a 360 panorama as well, hopefully that will stitch when I get to that. Definitely a successful birthday photo mission.
This is two shots. One for foreground and one for stars.

Since becoming a "night" photographer, I've had countless people contact me about my techniques. I usually answer most of those questions.
I've also helped out may photographers by providing "tips and tricks" to help them along the way.
Almost every image of the Milky Way I have seen from the "better" night photographers has been enhanced (which is normal and quite acceptable in my view.)

New York City - Lights
Dusk dances on the water
every evening
as the city hangs
brightly in a night sky
illuminated by the lights
of skyscrapers that
climb their way up
to the surface of
dreams.

The moments between day and night are some of my favorite moments. The sky seems to linger and dwell in the hues of the day while the city’s lights mix with the colors of the recent sunset on the surface of the water.
This image was taken with the Sony A99 on a brisk night while standing in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The view is of the skyscrapers of lower Manhattan including 1 WTC (also known as the Freedom Tower, the Woolworth Building, and New York by Gehry.

"Awestruck By Beauty"
I really can not describe the overwhelming feeling I had when I took this photograph. I had never seen the beauty of the colorful night sky some together quite like this before. Slight orange glow from far away cities mixed with green airglow and brilliant blue casts. The milky way was incredibly vivid even to the naked eye.
This image was taken in Patriarch Grove, deep in the White Mountains. The panorama was created using 13 images overlapping side by side. There was no HDR or compositing involved in this photograph. Only the stitching of the panorama.
This image really means a lot to me, if it means something to you feel free to share it with your friends.

#SeafarersBridge again - this time from the opposite end. You wouldn't know it by looking at this image, but while I was taking this long exposure, I had to endure an older couple having an argument as they walked towards me. They apologised for their foul language and behaviour as they finally spotted me. I smiled and let them know that my final image won't capture them nor their behaviour. They looked confused as they walked off and continued their argument.

Bodie Night Photgraphy in Motion
I decided to put a few images from this star trails shot at Bodie into an album to see if Auto Awesome would animate them. It did! It doesn't know whether the stars or the ground are moving though, so it decided to move them both a little bit. Technically it's more accurate to show the earth moving because it is the rotation of the earth which makes the stars seem to move, although we don't think of it that way from our point of reference.

Painting The Hawaiian Sky
Last night I met up with +Dallas Nagata White and +Tom Anderson in Hanauma Bay to shoot the stars and Milky Way. There were so many awesome things to shoot up in that area, it will definitely take me a while to digest all the shots I got. Here is one from the walk up, I guess I have decided to do a little #selfportrait series with my +Goal Zero Flashlight. I can't get over the beam on this thing. +Cole Yamane and I decided to stay out after Dallas and Tom went home. We even were up for sunrise, and then we crashed at 9am when we got home.

Bodie Night Photography Workshops for 2013
I've fine-tuned my workshop schedule to offer six sessions at the "ghost town" of Bodie State Historic Park this year, 5 at night and one for interior access:

The Bodie night access we are given starts when the park closes to the public at 6 pm, and goes until 1 am, so we get a full range of daylight, sunset, blue hour, twilight light as well as night. The ARC Gloria
I was just sitting, shooting surf and the awesome swells that all the surfers where drooling over. Too my right the sun rays blasting through the clouds had me drooling though. To my left a rainbow even started forming. So many things were were going on I needed 4 cameras and 4 clones of me to get it all haha.
What had me really focused was this ship out at sea. The way the light was hitting it, was just perfect. I knew right as I took it, it woudl make a perfect black & white. So here it is! I later found out this ship was the ARC Gloria, a Colombian Navy training ship, a three-masted sailing vessel and is the pride of Colombia’s Navy and was in Hawaii for a three-day stay. Glad I was there to get it!
I originally only rented a water housing from +Hawaii Photo Rental but ended up getting a 2x extender for my 70-200mm. It certainly came in handy, more ... more »

Dancing with the stars
