Do you have one or two high priority issues that override all others in your voting decisions? What are they? How much are you willing to compromise on in order to have those issues addressed the way you'd like?

(A friend this weekend said she always votes for the person who best addresses one particular issue, regardless of any other issues... made me wonder how common this is, and wise it is...)

Stupid things that piss me off today:

1. Norton Confidential (do I even own this product?) has some sort of glitch that has effed up my Chrome browser entirely. G+ doesn't work right, Gmail doesn't work right, nothing works right for the past week or so. No clear solution found as of yet. (I'm not tech inclined enough to grasp much of the discussion I'm finding in support.)

2. G+ notifications still don't seem to work on my phone.

3. Using Firefox as of today, notifications not working right here either.

4. Been trying to upload video from our NOLA trip to YouTube since June, finally was able to spend the 3 hours required yesterday. I believe this messed up my online speed so much that I couldn't access my work calendar while it was running. After it uploaded, it was "removed" for being too long. The world's first doll that "breastfeeds".

Not sure what I think of this, but at first glance I think surely something is lost in translation. Among other things, the website says: "Little girls need to learn to breastfeed." Um, I'm sure they will learn it when the time comes...

On the one hand, certainly it is a positive thing for us to grow up understanding that breastfeeding is natural and normal. On the other hand... so is sex, but I don't want a doll that does it.

I haven't traditionally been a fan of fundraising, and I'm even less a fan of begging for money.  Growing up, selling Scout Fair tickets or See's candy bars wasn't particularly meaningful or enjoyable for me.  But context matters, and I feel like my perspective on this is changing - see below.

On September 8th, I'm participating in the Best Buddies Challenge, a 100 mile bike ride from Carmel to Hearst Castle down the PCH.  It's going to be really fun.  But the main purpose of the event is really to raise money for Best Buddies International, a non-profit "dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities".  A great cause!

We are renewing our wedding vows for our tenth anniversary. Second line parade, ceremony onstage between sets of Kermit Ruffin at Vaughan's... suddenly hubby decides we have to get this once in a lifetime experience on film. We can't really afford to hire a photographer/videographer. I could probably carve out $200 to pay someone for what will likely be a couple of hours.

(I hate to be so cheap. I'm usually all about paying a real professional to do the job. It's just that it's a last minute thought, and we are already so overbudget... so I'm thinking maybe this would be a good opportunity for a college student or someone out of work.)

Art auction to help Shaun Duke replace his laptop.

+Shaun Duke  recently lost his laptop. He's a doctoral student; so, having a laptop and being mobile is kind of a necessity for him. He's in a tough spot at the moment financially and can't afford to buy a replacement. He needs to raise $742.00.

About a week ago, he made a post explaining his situation. Someone suggested that he ask his friends on Google+ to kick in and help him out. I've offered to auction off a painting that I did over a weekend about a month ago. All of the money is going to go to Shaun. In addition, someone has made an offer to match any amount of money raised by the auction up to 250 dollars.

First, let me admit that I didn't read the entire article (it's long and I'm impatient right now, but I'll go back to it). What I did read is very interesting and touches on topics that I've given some thought to.

As an adult, I cringe at all the damage I did to nature as a child. I cannot believe I caught lightning bugs, squeezed their tails off, and rubbed the glowing stuff on my skin. I surely ruined the homes of various critters in my clumsy attempts to create forts, catch crawdads and lizards, and pick flowers. And as a childless adult, I cringe at seeing other people's children now do the same.

On the other hand, I learned a lot about nature and the sheer wonder and joy of the universe. And maybe these things are exactly what taught me to appreciate and treasure it all. I honestly don't know.
