THANK YOU GOOGLE & G+ FRIENDS
It was a funny surprise to see the Google search page designed in gifts this morning. I figured it was also the birthday of a historical figure or famous living legend.... so I placed my mouse cursor over the pic and was totally surprised, it was for me. *BIG SMILE*

Snowflake-a-Day #97
This is a favourite snowflake for a few reasons: the symmetry, the center, and varying silver tones created by crystal thickness. Be sure to view large or you're really not seeing it. :) and help out the snowflake book project, now 25% funded in less than a week! http://igg.me/at/skycrystals/
High res: http://donkom.ca/gplus/DKP_0349.jpg . When it comes to "composition" of my snowflakes, I typically crop square and throw the branches on angles... but this one was screaming to be placed perfectly horizontally and I think it works well. You can clearly see the angle of the light from my ring flash coming in primarily from the left side, and on just the right angle to show the changing elevation in the center of the crystal.
Based on the thick flower-like center and the blocky tips on the branches, I'd say that this... more »

AND NOW....
something completely different from me in HD
I was doing a bit of experimenting this morning with how I could run my sound through my new camcorder using the audio in/out. I mounted the cam on the end of the guitar using a mini Gorilla Pod and actually found the results intriguing because of the auto focal changes and the image stability reacted like an actual person shooting the clip.
My little Jam? Haha..., Not planned or practiced, just improvising for the test.
The name Jammy Jam comes from actually still having my Plaid flannel jammy pants on when doing this early this morning.
Also posted on my FB account, so those that are friends there www.facebook.com/stuart.m.williams/ may have already see this today, but maybe not?
Enjoy my Jammy Jam CAM TEST

FROZEN HAZE
a result from extreme cold, -42
(Factory steam rises in the cold)
The past few days have been the brutal times that we all dread during the winter months up north. There are a few things that are quite beautiful when it's extremely cold, but that obviously requires being outside to capture the goodness. Unless I can go out looking like a padded round ball of warmth, and not be noticed by kids pointing their finger and laughing,.. I'm going to stay inside.
AS FOR THE PIC
I snagged this the other evening from my balcony 9 floors up, using a 300mm and just loved the orange glow that the ice crystals were providing, similar to pollution or sand storms. Just like a sandwich of sun, it was the final moments of another cold day gone by.
PLEASE ADD YOUR CURRENT TEMPERATURE :o)

A Mobile Moment

This is my current morning scene, as I drink coffee and freeze on my fingers while outside sneaking a smoke. I could never smoke inside, especially in a car. GROSS!!!

EASY WATER-DROP BACKGROUND TIP
how to 'TUNE' in color
Go grab on of those CD thingies that we never really use anymore, and either try a really strong light with a very low angle, or use a perfect WINTER AFTERNOON sun with low light coming through your WARM window.
ALMOST NO SETUP NEEDED (maybe a tall chair)
I've talked about this easy color background before, but if 1 new pair of eyes see this for the first time and then gets the desire to try, then my job is done here. :o)

Get on & ride a NEW CIRCLE
(hold on kiddies)
G+ is an experience, and it differs for everyone participating. Like most users today, I also wasn't here at the very beginning to gain from all the huge Circles, but managed to still participate with designing great Circles like "International Eye Candy" and the highly active "Pay It Forward Circle", which was one of G+'s most shared Circles, EVER.

Please suggest Circle Themes below, and don't be afraid to SHARE this request so we can encourage others to be a part of the growing G+ experience.

PICK'n a PIC
#macromonday +Macro Monday +Jennifer Eden +Kerry Murphy +Kelli Seeger Kim
This morning was really hard to Pick a Pic. Such a great week we just had here in Ottawa, Canada. The weather yesterday broke all the current records, and you could be outside in shorts without even caring. Maybe only little trips to the balcony, but outside is outside! :o)
Over the weekend, I relocated my work space at home and can now have drives hooked to laptop all the time, Browsing through all of my saved folders, and checking out shots from 2003 to present was sort of fun, also a reminder of how I once thought I knew what I was doing. Oh, how times have changed. For the better or worse, each of us chooses a path to travel.

Ninja Macro Shooting
sneaking in undetected
We all want the best shot possible, and sometimes we don't want to scare our little bug friends away, so we become satisfied with telephoto macro shooting from a few meters away. *Not Me*
I would rather have 5 missed opportunities with 1 captured ultra close.
Sometimes I''ll bump an insect and loose my chance, but most times when I move ultra slow, like a tree in the wind swaying back and forth, I get close enough to catch a KEEPER, Ninja style.

Reflections of a Spring morning melt.
After digging more through my LR exported folder, I've found all sorts of photos I played with while using LR.
This shot is the outcome of fast snowmelt in our local forest, and sometimes it's like a giant lake with little islands of trees popping up everywhere, quite a sight.
Thanks for allowing me to stop by... :o)

Favorite Flap
known as The Happy Dance
Have a HAPPY Tuesday
I spent years photographing ducks for practice, well over 750,000 shots snapped as I worked on all aspects of Speed shooting. Of course, I would go to the pond, (which is extremely close to home) fully loaded with photo bait, (aka: bread) and pop off shots for hours, 12 months out of the year. Coldest was -40 degrees, which is the same in either Celsius or Fahrenheit at that temp.
My rule was this, if my bare hands are in pain from the extreme cold, then the camera needs to be inside.
We're once again in the colder months, and I hear the duck calling me out to the pond. I think it's time to re-visit my little feathery friends and hopefully they will perform some classic flapping for me, with the sun shining bright for those needed high speed shutter bursts.
Smiles for the camera..... more »

If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry. I have missed a few people by pure accident. My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people. I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard.

Cheap & Easy LightChute
FREE Lens Reversal & MACRO Tool
If you've ever tried getting close to a subject using the body flash on your camera, then you know that the lens creates a shadow that basically kills the whole shot.
With a larger External Flash, you will also get a lens shadow and never actually be able to fully extend your macro lens.
Fully lined with foil for reflective value and not larger than the flash head width.
Just a tube, hollow flash extender.
LightChute constructed w/ Hobbyboard, Tape & Foil.
Considering the different sizes of lenses and gear, you're going to have to do the measuring and cutting all on your own, but I hope that just getting a visual of this LightChute that I've been writing about may excite any DIY'rs wanting to save a few dollars, and enter a whole new level of... more »

Okay Ladies, herrrrrrrre's Johnny!
(a little Sunday morning fun with photoshop)
Lots of layers, some done with 'Find Edges' and then blended with bottom layers. Others done in Painting mode and also blending. I did a fine smoothing blend with mouse and lots of little circles and rubbing in the end to soften the tones, and works just like rubbing tissue on a pencil drawing. *Outrageously Artsy, eh? :o)
Anyway, enjoy your Monday & do whatever you do, with a smile.

Dragon Flake
snowflake from today
50mm reversed on 90mm macro lens, and I saw a dragon.
Truth is, I had such a hard time with jamming the end of the 50mm into the snow, but after a few thumb wipes and 90% of snow removed, I was back at attempting to catch some snowflake goodness.
For what it's worth, fellow Canadian +Don Komarechka is a absolute pro with catching the details in his snowflake photography, and well worth the ADD to your Circle or Community.

Guess what doesn't happen on Friday? The end of the world!
To be clear: the world is NOT coming to an end on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. The Earth won't be destroyed. The Maya calendar has nothing to do with anything. The Sun won't align with a galactic black hole. Planet X doesn't exist. There is no planetary alignment. There won't be a solar storm that'll fry us. There are no giant asteroids on their way to impact us. The Earth's poles won't shift.
We good? Want more details? You got 'em:

DROP TWINS
a new life begins today
Using a drinking straw to control my water drop placements, I gently squeezed the straw and touched the feather to leave a beautiful, clear droplet on the water-repellent feather I found earlier in the day.
#MacroMonday has been an active theme on G+ for the past year, and a wonderful place to not only view fabulous images from around the World, but also a great place to learn new tricks in snapping "very close" shots of what we see through our cameras.
Be sure to tag your G+ photo with #MacroMonday in order to be seen when others search for submitted photos.

The sands of time...
never have enough grains
I feel like I really needed to share my past few days. My Facebook friends at https://www.facebook.com/Stuart.m.Williams are already aware, so I'm sorry for the double dose of my grief.
My wife's father died on Saturday in a very unexpected situation. It was, and still is a very large shock for the immediate family, and we're dealing with the services along with every other aspect of this tragic event.
He was a hero, and changed the political landscape for the better. A meager man that was officially recognized by Pope John Paul II & polish President Lech Walesa for his devotion to the Polish Solidarity movement during the 1970's and 1980's.

Have you BEEn busy?...
During the Summer and Fall, I've had some great opportunities, and of course a few cancelled events, and out of my control.
I snagged this tongue extended bee shot during the beginning of our Canadian Fall. This happened to be the only type flower in the area, and the bees would just come and go in a very desperate attempt to not miss the few bits of pollen that was available.
It's during this time of the year, or their cycle, that they are so preoccupied with gathering pollen, that they will even allow you to bump them without taking flight. Obviously allowing for ridiculously close shots, without really disturbing nature.
That's right, 2 posts in a single day. :o)

the OLD & the NEW G+'rs
If we haven't met yet, because I've been somewhat of a bad googler at times, and possibly didn't notice your icon slipping through my New Contacts list in the past months, please drop a quick hello in the comments below. I'd like the extra push to see who everyone is.
To some of the older users, there have been many positive changes for G+ and all of it's photo users during the past year, and I simply need to re-organize to fully appreciate the good people right here at my finger tips.
Time to find some sort of organization "Chrome Extension" tool or something that actually works better than my frugal attempts.

Seeing EYE to EYE
with a Daddy Long Legs spider
(50mm lens reversal)
Day 3, that I have posted a morning pic to G+... after a long pause.
Getting in close is a must when using another lens attached to a macro lens as I do with my old 50mm reversed on my Tamron 90mm Macro Lens, and scaring away bugs is the story of my "macro life".
For whatever reason, this spider let me get in closer than most others. Maybe, this spider simply figured if it did not move, I wouldn't notice it.
Using my LightChute to clear the lens setup and direct light straight down on subject, I snapped the best spider shot I have ever taken.
It's WEDNESDAY Googlers, enjoy the day.

After a summer of waiting and being rescheduled, it's time to get ready for next year instead.

Round & Round We Go
(not to fast, just comfortably slow)
On a Saturday morning walk, looking for "Bugs or Flowers", I didn't spot much except snails. Sure there were a few bugs, but nothing that I haven't seen 2 ga-zillion times before. The heat has been extreme, and we have basically lost 1\2 the summer to burning sun drying up our eco-system.
The shell of a snail has always fascinated me, so I was please to see so many varieties of them during my morning stroll in the forest.

STORM HEADS HOME
(between the red & me)
It's just the skyline from my balcony, on one of those days that was just a bit worse than other days.
The red part of the cloud can only be explained from the possibility of a towering cloud catching the setting sun, which had already sunk below the horizon a few minutes earlier. Similar to fiber optics channeling light.
This would have been the perfect evening and cloud formation for a 10mm-22mm lens, but I sadly do not have one.
It's Friday, enjoy.

↬LAST ONE STANDING↫
prepare for flight...
After the wonderful G+ member +Robin Griggs Wood posted a beautiful dandelion a month or so back, similar to the one here, I knew I had snapped one just days earlier and went Card hunting to find it.
In the end after I found it, I used my PixelBender plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 to give it a nice painted look.
I really enjoy the smooth strokes and attention to details with PixelBender, but sad news comes when you upgrade to Photoshop CS6, no more support for the plug-in and there's no plan for offering it. Instead, CS6 has included a feature called OIL PAINT in the Filter area. It's simply not as good PixelBender, and a little bit of a disappointment that the choice has been removed.
On a lighter side... I just posted something new!
HAVE A FANTASTIC FRIDAY

Not the best from what I've seen here tonight , but glad to get out and crank the cam up to ridiculous speeds to shoot through a regular 70-300mm w/ no filters at the sunset. I could see Venus, but the atmosphere distortion and local rain storm between me and the Sun, was a bit of a hinder.
I can now say, "I took a Venus Transit shot."
(even if it's a bit of a mess...) :o)

Where's My Colour?
I noticed the other day that my image was a little drab, not as vibrant as I remembered. Today I had the same feeling after posting and put both versions side by side. Can you see the difference?
Every time I install a new version of Photoshop, I get the same issue. And because it's only once in a while that I need to correct it, I always forget. Can't remember if it's the Default Working Space, or some other silly setting. But, I do remember that it's an easy fix. :O)

MORNING FRESH
(90mm + 50mm reversal macro)
Although yesterday was #macromonday , I had to unfortunately miss it and concentrate on the dreaded four letter word that ends in "K", and usually happens between Monday & Friday.
This is my favourite way, and least expensive method of getting in really close to your macro subject. Just an older style 50mm SLR lens, mine is an old film type with aperture ring on it which I must manually set to wide open.
Lighting is the only thing I've seen hold people back from getting a good result with 50mm reversed, and the most common mistake is adjusting the Aperture to compensate for lack of light, because your focal plane gets thinner with each step.
I like to shoot macro with f/22-32, this is how I make my own light and don't rely on natural light.
