Crags along Lone Pine Creek in the John Muir Wilderness
It's surprising at just how many photo opportunities there are along Lone Pine Creek from the Alabama Hills all the way up to it's different forks smaller tributaries. There are numerous waterfalls off trail that can be seen with a little extra effort. The snow is just about all gone so it's time for the easier exploring!

Moon star over Thousand Island Lake and Banner Peak, in the Ansel Adams Wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Range.
Won't be up in the Sierra during the month of July and part of June, don't want to miss my son being born! I'll find a way to make it up there before or after.
I had a lot of fun on this trip up there, Christina and I got to see the climber memorial up on the slopes of Banner Peak. It's a small plaque engraved and very easy to miss. A big thanks to Bob Meyers for pointing the group in the right direction.

An Eastern Sierra Peak surrounded by clouds.
Should be an easy guess!
Have you ever heard a photograph should have some type of anchor in it? If that were true then this mountain should be floating away somewhere, wouldn't it? Guess an anchor or some type of grounding is not always needed as in this case.

Made the list of a 100 Top Travel Photographers!
The state of California boasts more variety in its landscapes, coastlines, national parks and stunning vistas than many entire countries so it is little surprise that it attracts hordes of travel photographers. Southern California-based landscape snapper Steve Sieren specialises in capturing this rich variety with his beautiful art images, with his work taking him into some of the most remote and unspoilt spots in the area and its nearby deserts.

A beautiful day in Yosemite
#treetuesday
A beautiful day in Yosemite.
Since this is the internet I'll tell you a wild make believe story of how I got this shot for your entertainment! Dude, it was such a wild day with raging cascades everywhere. It was as if all of Yosemite Valley was flooding so it was the perfect day for waterfall photography. I wanted to get closer to the water then anyone had ever been so I rappelled off the bridge and used my daddy long legged tripod upside down while a friend secured it to the underside of the bridge. We used walkie talkies so I would know when to shoot while no cars were passing on the bridge. You could imagine the crowd watching, we told them to whisper so no one would create extra vibrations. I had a moment when the camera slipped off the tripod and almost plunged into the raging torrent below but I reached out ... more »

It's sort of a tight squeeze getting into this one! This is a land of texture so it's just asking to be converted to a black and white shot!

Here's some light painting at Valley of Fire in Nevada.
I wanted to keep the texture and shape of this odd rock so instead of relying on heavy saturation. By doing this the image would work well as a black and white also.

Wild Landscape at the Southern End of California's Lost Coast
Had a rough evening on this trip. Earlier I had traveled along the shoreline to a place where those off shore sea stacks in the distance of this photograph. Got trapped by the rising tide and instead of climbing up the slopes I went for a very short swim. California's Lost Coast is not on the iconic list of landscape photographer destinations but it a wild place that eventually will be.....

What's one thing that makes a great shot?
There are numerous things that make a great shot but in this one it's the color opposites and the percentage of them that are the strongest points. That is merely an opinion if you have one I'd love to hear it...
Sunset in Point Mugu Southern California. 50 west of downtown Los Angeles. 25 minutes from where I lived in Thousand Oaks. There's some great stuff to shoot in and around Los Angeles!!

A sweeping view of Sandstone Peak and the Echo Cliffs in the Santa Monica Mountains right here in Los Angeles!
We need some rain, all the green is disappearing! I think the northwest section of this coastal range is the most beautiful part of this recreation area. Over the background lies Camarillo and Newbury Park.
Shoot Local!!
Why shoot local? If you shoot local you get out more, if you get out more, you exercise your mind and better your composition skills. If you can make the average non iconic scenery near your home then imagine how much better and easier you will be able to compose those famous icons people visit all too often. You may be able to see them in a completely different way.

The Mesquite Tree - Mesquite Dunes Death Valley
Only a 2 day backpack trek to get to the only tree in the dunes here in Death Valley. I was amazed at how tall the tree was! It ended up getting much hotter so I ran out of water and almost died for this darn photo. Don't you just love landscape photo stories that are way over dramatic? There was a windstorm that evening so I lost my tent while shooting star trails but I found it the next day down past Badwater. Here's the GPS coordinates to this exact spot where the only tree in the dunes is!

Sunrise at Monument Valley
It's been a while since I've been to Monument Valley. This was shot w/ a Nikon D70. Don't really recall if these rocks in the foreground were the rocks right in the parking or I took a walk to find something different.
I do remember the Navajo guides talking about all the cool places they could take me to and all the different prices ranging from $200 and I talked some down to $40. That was in 2006, I wonder what they would charge now. I really wanted to go to Teardrop Arch but couldn't afford it at the time. Now I think there is plenty to find in the wilderness to go off and explore on your own.
I got married Friday!! I wasn't feeling nervous at all until put the tux and hour before the ceremony. It was a fabulous day that went by so fast! Off to the honeymoon on Monday!

Guess what? The West Coast has a new National Park!!
http://yhoo.it/X5cAxa
This California Chaparral park is full of lichen covered boulders and high coastal mountain range views!! Some geologist say it's the other half of the Santa Monica Mountains split into two different ranges long ago by the San Andreas and other faults. I've only been to the east side and found it very impressive from a landscape photographer's point of view. Caves, canyons and high trails into a wilderness setting is what you'll find there, check it out!!

Wow! There is a large dune field out in the Mojave Desert without many footprints? (no windstorm necessary)
There is a reason for this, it's because not many people know about it, if everyone knew about it there would be lots of footprints! It's a double edged sword isn't it?
Should we provide GPS coordinates, build a hotel and Starbucks across the street for comfort and certainty? (please say no) I would love tell the whole world where this place is but the animals need their place where humans don't frequent. I'm sure you don't want every dune habitat to look like the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley do you? Don't get me wrong the Mesquite Dunes are beautiful but we all know about the large section the footprints give some people some trouble, not all but some. The world will always have lesser known pristine places to see and they are just a little bit of... more »

A little 80ft waterfall into a Chasm in Death Valley.
NPS told me not to visit this place because I could snap an arm back or get hurt in some other way. Should I take offense to them telling me this? No, they don't know me personally and what my physical abilities are, so they're just doing their job to keep me safe along with the rest of the public. Why don't you just go to Zabriskie Point and stay away from the ledge son! Or visit the Racetrack, just don't get 4 flat tires!
I've got a workshop this March in the iconic places of Death Valley if anyone is interested visit

Joshua trees framing Ryan Mountain at twilight.
Had a goal of finding 3 new places to shoot off the photographer's Icon Map. Found 2 of them and spent so much time looking for the 3rd. It was hardest because it was because it was buried in the Wonderland of Rocks. If you've been off trail in there you know what I mean. You could be standing 20ft from what you're looking for but it can still be out of site. I did come across some other interesting formation so I still ended up finding 3 things. Do you ever set goals like this when you're out there shooting or before you leave?
The scene here is not one of them, it was just an easy view as I was driving away and leaving the park. Was a little exhausted after spending 4 hours in the Wonderland of Rocks so the roadside view a quick one before the 2 1/2 hour drive home.

Processing and Set Up for Panoramic Photography
A few simple basics I recommend keeping in mind.
• Use a tripod unless it’s a snapshot to you. There is nothing wrong with handheld snapshots at speeds of double the focal length with added image stabilization down to about 1/125 shutter speed. If you don’t have a panoramic head level the tripod as best you can. If the light is fleeting don’t let it get away, fire a few shots before you set up perfectly. Catching the best light is more important then being anal with the set up you may miss the moment and have nothing more then a technically boring photograph.
• Establish a beginning and an end point where you'll cut off the edges on the sides of the photograph top and bottom as well.
• Make sure you have enough overlap 20-30% is fine unless you go really wide, then you’ll need more. With older stitching softw... more »

Fiery other worldly sunset through Elephant Rock Arch at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada's Mojave Desert.
This is two merged images with a tilt shift lens to add a little more mega pixels to file and get the 4x5 format instead of the normal 4x6 format created from DSLR cameras. It's a great technique to have available but it's only used every now and then. I prefer zoom lenses when I'm shooting but primes are always a little sharper.
