Tony Eckersley11,521Ok guys! Sorry for the delay, but I was trying to make a few things work for our Drink & Click but unfortunately it didn't happen for this Thursday. Maybe next time! Regardless, as this is the first D&C in a while, and because it's dark so early now, let's meet up at Americano on Mission and Embarcadero between 5:30 and 6pm. It's close to the Bart for those getting to the city too! From there, we will talk down the Embarcadero, taking shots of the Bay Bridge and from Rincon Park before making our way to Hi dive where we can grab food (if you haven't eaten already).    Hopefully everyone can make it! Also, The November Challenge is Transportation - so look for shots that qualify! See Details Here: http://goo.gl/2l9h1Y By entering a qualifying photo to the Challenge you have a chance to win: 1st Place prize an awesome bag from Pan Am - check their stuff out at http://www.panam.com/shop.html 2nd Place prize +Gary Fong Flash Diffusers Snoot 3rd Place +Think Tank Photo Pixel Pocket Rocket™Drink & Click SF is back!2013-11-22 03:00:0027

Thomas Hawk7,790,278One of our favorite San Francisco photographers is very shortly to become one of our favorite London photographers.  Yes, Chris Chabot has joined the flock at Twitter and is moving to LONDON! To send Chris off in style, we will be having one last epic Chris Chabot photowalk -- and what better place for a photowalk with Chris than the annual Burning Man Decompression event. If you have never shot Decom before, you are in for a treat.  It's a visual smorgasbord of pure delight. We will meet at the *second* entrance, near the corner of 20th and Minnesota Streets at 2:30 pm sharp.  Bring your Canon or Nikon or iPhone or Android... or better yet, be like Chris and bring a Leica!   Whatever you shoot, come and hang out with some great SF photographers and help send Chris off in style.  All skill levels welcome. It's $15 to enter Decom.  More details on the event here:  http://goo.gl/XkJlgnIt's the Chris Chabot Farewell Decompression Photowalk!!!!2013-10-13 23:30:00125

Drink And Click™ SF537Wow, you know you are having an awesome month of special guests when you need not one, but TWO Drink and Clicks to fit them all in! I have just received word that +Elia Locardi and his wife  +Naomi Locardi  from http://www.blamethemonkey.com/, AND +Brian Matiash  will BOTH be in town this week! Now this is a trifecta of awesomeness! So to celebrate, we will be taking them out in one of the most fun and diverse sections of San Francisco...North Beach! Chinatown, Portsmouth Square Plaza, Washington Square, St. Peter's and Pauls Church....the shooting possibilities are endless. It also doesn't hurt that this neighborhood has plenty of great bars and cafes to socialize in. I will work on a updated itinerary this weekend. But this much I know. We are meeting at Vesuvio Cafe at  255 Columbus at 5:00PM. PLEASE BRING CASH IF YOU ARE GOING TO ORDER A DRINK! We will be there until a little after 6:15, when we will take off and walk the streets to get the great light. Afterwards, who knows...more drinking and of course more clicking!  So come on SF Bay Area Photogs. Let's welcome +Brian Matiash +Elia Locardi and +Naomi Locardi to SF! (BTW, this is the FIRST time the Locardis have been to SF, so let's get a great big turnout and show them how we do it.) The Giants are hosting the Cincinnati Reds that evening, so there should be a lively atmosphere, with plenty of street photography to mix in with the usual Bay Bridge and Waterfront photos.  There will be free schwag, drink specials, photography talk, friendships being born, friendships being ended, and a plethora of fun photos that you will most likely regret in the morning. *You do NOT need to Drink to be a part of the #DrinkAndClick . Nature's Doctor

Nature has some incredible healing qualities. There's something about fresh air, your toes in the sand, leaves rustling in every direction, critters dancing around your feet and the open sky above your head that creates a sort of natural high.

Watching this sunset being painted in the sky was magical. I had been spying on the clouds all afternoon and hoped it would unfold like it did. When I arrived at the beach, I was shocked to see I was the only person on the sand.

Sadly not much is known about this beautiful power plant, but it appears to have been part of the former 1950's era Beaunit Rayon Factory in Childersburg, Alabama.

The plant still stands on well maintained grounds between many active businesses, while the rubble of the now demolished Rayon Factory lays scattered around the nearby fields.

Seclusion Doors

These seclusion rooms are located on the first floor, basement level, of the Polk Building, or K Building, at the Western State Hospital in Tennessee. These rooms contained two doors, the first has an open window with a metal covering. The second is a solid wood door with a glass window. This allowed nurses to check on patients but kept the noise to a minimum.

First light seeps through a small personnel door in the side of the cooling tower.

Having the opportunity to revisit this location was really awesome. The last time I was here, it was incredibly humid and the temps reached the high 80's. I felt much more refreshed during this last visit and was able to capture some of the angles and perspectives I didn't photograph on the first visit.

Warehouse At Night
Sloss Furnaces, Alabama

James Withers Sloss was one of the founders of the city of Birmingham, Alabama. In 1880, he founded the Sloss Furnace Company, where he constructed the city's first blast furnace and contributed to the industrial production of iron in the south. In 1899, when James Sloss sold the company to investors, they rebuilt the furnaces with modern equipment and also constructed brand new boilers .

The site operated until 1969 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980's. The Sloss Furnaces now operate as a museum and is open to the public.

Kirkbride Blue Hour

This is another one of my favorite Kirkbride buildings at the Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital in New York.

Much of the building has decayed over the years since closing in 2003. Poughkeepsie, New York experiences snow, heat and humidity throughout the year, which have all contributed to the demise of the wings of this hospital. Fortunately, the Administration section, shown here, has remained in tact due to a layer of protection placed over the roof before the weather took a toll.

This is definitely the most unique shot I've seen of Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierras of California.

I love the low perspective, framing, colors and clouds. Wow! Awesome job +Alex Noriega.

"The Two Towers"

A unique view of the tufa formations of Mono Lake, California under stormy skies at sunset.

Since the water level here has dropped in the past couple of years, compositions incorporating water or reflections are much harder to come by. This left me looking for a frame for these strange towers, and this was what found. I thought the curling wave formation of the foreground, along with the stormy skies, looked pretty SPOOKY.

This image is comprised of several stacked exposures for depth of field at f/22 for the foreground frame (it was mere inches from my lens), one for the main formations at f/11, and one at f/8 for the sky.

The Magnificent Greystone Psychitaric Hospital

I wish the outcome had been different. Seeing this beautiful building vanish has broken my faith in politicians and has given me very little hope that many structures like this will be saved in the future years to come. Many Kirkbride structures are already gone and now the Greystone Psychiatric Hospital will be added to the list.

Once the largest contiguous building in the United States, this structure opened in 1876 and was designed to house a few hundred mentally ill patients of New Jersey and the surrounding areas.

Sutro Baths Sunset
San Francisco, CA

I had low expectations for this sunset last weekend. A friend had invited me to meet up that morning but the cloud cover was thick and the wind was blowing vigorously along the coast. I went to the beach with the intentions of hanging out and catching up more than shooting, but miraculously, the clouds began to clear just as the sun began to near the horizon.

I really enjoyed this post. Thanks for the inspiration +Patrick Di Fruscia.

I recently got asked, "What is the single biggest mistake you have made in your life?" Took me a little while to answer this one and could not come up with an answer. I kept going back in my life and thought about all those moments where I thought I literally screwed things up only to realize an hour, or a year afterwards that these weren’t mistakes at all. All these so called mistakes were actually blessings in disguise. I can sincerely say that my mistakes were and still are the best life coach I could ever ask for.
- They made me realize that no matter how much I stress over things I do not control, It will never affect the outcome in a positive way, as a matter of fact, it will only make it worst.
- They made me appreciate the people or things in my life instead of focusing on what I don’t have.
- They made me realize that impatience always leads to no good.
- They made me realize that most of my fears were nothing more than small pebbles in my shoes..Very uncomfortable but once removed, very trivial.
- They made me realize that no matter how much I wish to be someone else, I will always be my one and only self and to be proud of that.
In other words, they all made me a better man.
I know that some of you might be able to share with me mistakes that you simply cannot find a positive outlook from but I am sure you will agree that you can on most of them.
If you are presently thinking you have just made a big mistake in your life, instead of making things worst by dwelling over it, Try asking yourself..What can I learn from this that will make me a better person? Who needs to spend money on a life coach really…lets just keep making mistakes.. They're free!!! (well sometimes they are) wink emoticon
In the end the important thing is to remember this famous quote from an unknown author : "You can't make the same mistake twice. The second time you make it, it's no longer a mistake. It's a choice.” So I advise you to learn quickly !! Wishing you all a beautiful week full of mistakes. tongue emoticon

Wingdale Wards, Harlem Valley State Hospital

During my visit last year, I discovered the owners had begun illegal abatement of the property. The State of New York shut down the work being done on the property, but the damage had already been done. Just months before, this building showed evidence of natural decay. The floors were covered in moss and many rooms contained artifacts such as old telephones.

Seattle Skyline

Taken during a ferry ride into Seattle from Bainbridge Island, during my trip up to visit friends at the start of 2015.

We specifically chose this ferry ride because it occurred right at sunset. By the time we hit Seattle, it was blue hour, my favorite time of day to shoot. It was cold, the water was choppy and I was losing light quickly, so this was the only useable image I snagged of the city.
