Thomas Hawk7,894,697One of our favorite San Francisco photographers is very shortly to become one of our favorite London photographers.  Yes, Chris Chabot has joined the flock at Twitter and is moving to LONDON! To send Chris off in style, we will be having one last epic Chris Chabot photowalk -- and what better place for a photowalk with Chris than the annual Burning Man Decompression event. If you have never shot Decom before, you are in for a treat.  It's a visual smorgasbord of pure delight. We will meet at the *second* entrance, near the corner of 20th and Minnesota Streets at 2:30 pm sharp.  Bring your Canon or Nikon or iPhone or Android... or better yet, be like Chris and bring a Leica!   Whatever you shoot, come and hang out with some great SF photographers and help send Chris off in style.  All skill levels welcome. It's $15 to enter Decom.  More details on the event here:  http://goo.gl/XkJlgnIt's the Chris Chabot Farewell Decompression Photowalk!!!!2013-10-13 23:30:00128

Drink And Click™ SF531Wow, you know you are having an awesome month of special guests when you need not one, but TWO Drink and Clicks to fit them all in! I have just received word that +Elia Locardi and his wife  +Naomi Locardi  from http://www.blamethemonkey.com/, AND +Brian Matiash  will BOTH be in town this week! Now this is a trifecta of awesomeness! So to celebrate, we will be taking them out in one of the most fun and diverse sections of San Francisco...North Beach! Chinatown, Portsmouth Square Plaza, Washington Square, St. Peter's and Pauls Church....the shooting possibilities are endless. It also doesn't hurt that this neighborhood has plenty of great bars and cafes to socialize in. I will work on a updated itinerary this weekend. But this much I know. We are meeting at Vesuvio Cafe at  255 Columbus at 5:00PM. PLEASE BRING CASH IF YOU ARE GOING TO ORDER A DRINK! We will be there until a little after 6:15, when we will take off and walk the streets to get the great light. Afterwards, who knows...more drinking and of course more clicking!  So come on SF Bay Area Photogs. Let's welcome +Brian Matiash +Elia Locardi and +Naomi Locardi to SF! (BTW, this is the FIRST time the Locardis have been to SF, so let's get a great big turnout and show them how we do it.) Earlier this year, I took a night photography workshop in Arizona taught by Mike Hows (http://takenpictures.com/) and Joe Reed (https://www.flickr.com/photos/hopeless_romantic_photography/).

It was a really great time hanging out in this airplane boneyard catching up with old friends. If you’re looking to do a night photography workshop I’d strongly encourage you to check out one of theirs. They get access to rad locations and have a great laid back and “hands on” teaching style.

This.

Very wise words +Patrick Di Fruscia.

Sometimes I feel we live in a world that is slowly turning us into zombies. We spend countless hours on social medias wishing we were someone else or somewhere else. We keep judging our lives and who we are in relation to other people’s post. We spend countless hours watching TV Shows or movies with "no soul". Shows that beside making sure we are unproductive or should I say "entertained", have absolutely no other goals. Most of them hardly brings us any positive feelings, emotions or motivations to be better at what we do or who we are as humans. Unfortunately, many of us get trapped into this only to realize after a few years that we are exactly at the same point we were years ago and wonder why. Worst is, after pondering on that for a short while, we quickly start the same pattern again and again. It almost looks like all this has been conceived on purpose in order to make sure we dont think too much, we don’t ask too many questions, we don’t have faith in or even worst don’t have any goals and dreams at all. In other words, making sure we live our lives like zombies. We constantly create ourselves material needs, consume more than we should and think we have no control whatsoever over what is going on in our lives. I personally think that the problem is not the world we live. It would be too easy to blame everything on it.

I Think The Main Problem is.....We forgot how to think!!

The second we have a minute to spare we immediately connect to whatever device we can to make sure we fill in that gap. And this goes on all day until we can barely keep our eyes open. When is the last time you took time uninterrupted, with no distractions, with only a pen and a paper? Took the time to think of things you would like to change or happen in your life, write them down and think of ideas on how you could accomplish them. Don’t question them just write them down. It does not matter how silly they might sound at first, these ideas might trigger bigger and better ideas down the road. By doing this daily practice, you will quickly realize that:

- You do have more control over your life that you thought possible.
- You do have the power to become better person.
- You can make this world a better place for you and others.

As soon as you start doing this, you will immediately feel better about yourself and this will radiate towards others giving them the energy they need to do exactly the same. The best way to inspire others is not by our words but by our actions. Again I will end this post by sharing one amazing quote by the great Mahatma Ghandi

“ Let’s Be the change we want to see in the world”

Sutro Tower

I was looking through my archives the other day and stumbled upon this image of Sutro Tower shot from the Marin Headlands on a beautiful, fog morning in 2013.

I haven't been out to the headlands to shoot the fog much since, but I definitely can remember how glorious this morning was.

This was the last location we explored during our trip to the Southern United States last May.

I was so ecstatic to find a mostly in-tact morgue with drawers and doors. I realize that may sound "crazy" to most people, but it's an artifact of these asylums/hospitals that is usually destroyed or full of graffiti.

The plant still stands on well maintained grounds between many active businesses, while the rubble of the now demolished Rayon Factory lays scattered around the nearby fields.

It was a really great time hanging out in this airplane boneyard catching up with old friends. If you’re looking to do a night photography workshop I’d strongly encourage you to check out one of theirs. They get access to rad locations and have a great laid back and “hands on” teaching style.

Goodbye

Demolition on Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital has been underway for a few months now and yesterday, video was posted showing the demolition has reached the Administration section of the Kirkbride, which means this corridor is gone.

In a few months, she will be nothing more than a memory and that is very tragic. History is vanishing right before our eyes and once it is gone, it will be too late to ever get it back…

Warehouse At Night
Sloss Furnaces, Alabama

James Withers Sloss was one of the founders of the city of Birmingham, Alabama. In 1880, he founded the Sloss Furnace Company, where he constructed the city's first blast furnace and contributed to the industrial production of iron in the south. In 1899, when James Sloss sold the company to investors, they rebuilt the furnaces with modern equipment and also constructed brand new boilers .

The site operated until 1969 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980's. The Sloss Furnaces now operate as a museum and is open to the public.

Kirkbride Blue Hour

This is another one of my favorite Kirkbride buildings at the Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital in New York.

Much of the building has decayed over the years since closing in 2003. Poughkeepsie, New York experiences snow, heat and humidity throughout the year, which have all contributed to the demise of the wings of this hospital. Fortunately, the Administration section, shown here, has remained in tact due to a layer of protection placed over the roof before the weather took a toll.

This is definitely the most unique shot I've seen of Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierras of California.

I love the low perspective, framing, colors and clouds. Wow! Awesome job +Alex Noriega.

"The Two Towers"

A unique view of the tufa formations of Mono Lake, California under stormy skies at sunset.

Since the water level here has dropped in the past couple of years, compositions incorporating water or reflections are much harder to come by. This left me looking for a frame for these strange towers, and this was what found. I thought the curling wave formation of the foreground, along with the stormy skies, looked pretty SPOOKY.

This image is comprised of several stacked exposures for depth of field at f/22 for the foreground frame (it was mere inches from my lens), one for the main formations at f/11, and one at f/8 for the sky.

For information on processing instruction, workshops, and prints, visit www.alexnoriegaphotography.com___Photo of the Day

The Magnificent Greystone Psychitaric Hospital

I wish the outcome had been different. Seeing this beautiful building vanish has broken my faith in politicians and has given me very little hope that many structures like this will be saved in the future years to come. Many Kirkbride structures are already gone and now the Greystone Psychiatric Hospital will be added to the list.

Once the largest contiguous building in the United States, this structure opened in 1876 and was designed to house a few hundred mentally ill patients of New Jersey and the surrounding areas.

Sutro Baths Sunset
San Francisco, CA

I had low expectations for this sunset last weekend. A friend had invited me to meet up that morning but the cloud cover was thick and the wind was blowing vigorously along the coast. I went to the beach with the intentions of hanging out and catching up more than shooting, but miraculously, the clouds began to clear just as the sun began to near the horizon.
