Bearman Cartoons73,859People Who Paid Attention to My July 1 Morning PostThis morning I posted a benign comment with no image wondering if people are engaged in G+ without images.  I said I would share a circle of anyone that commented and surprisingly many did.  OP: https://plus.google.com/103857459148999991693/posts/ThcDtFipGTDSO WHY SHOULD I CARE?You may ask.  I don't recommend ever blindly adding an entire group of people shared in a circle.  However, so many complain about the Ghost town of G+ where engagement is rare.  These are obviously people who are engaged in the platform.  So pick 5-10 and take a look at their profile.  If you like what you see, circle them and tell them I sent you.  If you don't, move on.What I learned- Circle shares aren't dead.  While many have been lost in communities there is still a place for specific, targeted Circle Shares on G+- Some of my commenters still think they are snarkier than me :)2014-07-01 23:04:169952455

Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441178

Circle Distribution0And then there was the RANDOMNESS  #CircleOfRandomness v5.0(Not to be confused with   #CircleYouShare  which will be revamped separately, hopefully based on equal shares to individuals)Just because I think #YoureAwseome  I have included you in this random circle share, separate from my "A Wonderful Distribution of Wonderful People" This is my 5th series of  "Circle of Randomness". I will not do this every week, but instead more like every other week. Every so often, I decide to be my random self and randomly select a group of people who have interacted with me rather by +1ing , commenting, & or sharing on & from my various accounts here on G+. Besides the  +Altered DNA +Tech Integration & +Circle Distribution, my main personal account remains anonymous, and I'd like to keep it that way (sorry). I'm a private kind of guy, that's all =DSo yeah, if you're in this circle I'd like it if you shared it. Why? Because YOU deserve to be shared...fyi, I really don't care if you share THIS circle privately, just share it, rather private or public (public makes it easier for me to track and therefore easier to know that you may want to be included in future circle shares)....SHARE IT! Danial Hallock10,323No Name NeededIt's getting close to the Holiday Season, and the whole point of this particular part of the season is to "give thanks" to the people (or, in America, things) that have positively impacted your life.  For me, these are those people. You all should remember my initial circle The Three Hundred (http://goo.gl/kqE8h) which was well received at 251 +1s and 48 reshares.  This circle was my first round of hyper-vetting individuals for circling, based on a lot of criteria that was centered around high quality content and a high level of engagement.  I think I combed through about 2,300 profiles on a one-by-one basis before arriving at the final product. That circle then morphed into the The Collaborative Circle (http://goo.gl/Ex9ai) which was less publicized, but still racked in 90 +1s and 13 reshares.  This circle was based on the premise that "If four people from The Three Hundred enjoy person X, then I should also enjoy them."  Well, the combination of these circles lead to an interesting scenario in which I was able to locate all stars through a combination of overlap and relevance (via Google algorithms).  Out popped these twenty five individuals, and I could not be happier with the results.  These are twenty-five individuals in which I am subscribed, their posts are always enjoyable as well as insightful, and the notification stream keeps me engaged throughout the day.Whether you're looking at the tech news from +Mike Elgan, the social and scientific commentary of +Yonatan Zunger, or the general internet awesomeness that is the enigma of +Sarah Rios, you're not going to be disappointed.I normally only notify people that are contained within a circle, but these people are too awesome not to be guilty of a little plus-spam;  feel free to request a removal from the notified (all) circles.(Link to this post: http://goo.gl/AlsXG5) #nonameneeded   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring   #sharedcircle  2013-11-13 23:53:242639671

Go figure: The biggest problem women face on the internet isn't the harrassers (these sexist fools are a minority), but the majority of men who don't believe women when they express the severity of the harrassment they recieve.

Sexism in Technology and Gaming

Take a look on the Gamergate or pro-feminism posts of really popular Plussers like  +Yonatan Zunger, +God Emperor Lionel Lauer, or +Kimberly Chapman and you'll find people talking about how women are just as sexist as men.

Let's see where that train of thought takes us.  Spoiler: Even if everyone is equally sexist, women still get harassed exponentially more.

Dude, you're Racist

+Yonatan Zunger offered this up to me as recommended reading during one of his posts a week or two ago and I just got around to reading it, because job and life and stuff. I read it, largely, because I want to learn how to portray people outside of my ethnic group in a work of fiction I'm writing; but I think this is really a fantastic read for everyone.

In particular, I found this quote to be well worth sharing:

"Privilege is a smooth road. When you have privilege, you still have to travel from point A to point B to get what you want. It may tire you out, but the road you walk is smooth; it's paved.  The sun is shining and birds are chirping and there's a cool breeze helping you along. You don't even notice that your road is smooth; you expect it to be, and it is, so you walk it. Whereas the less privileged person beside you, also trying to get from point A to point B? There are potholes in his road. There are man-made barriers that he has to climb over. There may be a pit of snakes. Oh, and it's raining and he can't afford a coat or umbrella. Sucks to be him."

"This is not to say that your road is always and entirely smooth. Just the portion affected by race, in the case of white privilege. Or the portion of it affected by gender, in the case of male privilege. And so on.  This doesn't invalidate the individual and specific pain you may feel as you walk your road because you have chronic arthritis, and your son has cancer, your boss is a sociopath, and your marriage is falling apart. We all have our individual pain. Privilege is the absence of pain in areas you can't even see."___

"The chances of an Ebola outbreak in the United States are extremely low. In the unlikely event that someone with Ebola does reach our shores, flight crews can now better identify whose sick, more labs can test for the virus, and our hospitals are trained, ready, and able to deal with possible cases appropriately."

"In West Africa, Ebola is an epidemic; if it is not stopped now, we could see 100,000s affected with significant political and economic implications for all of us."

This is why I like this man; he doesn't get caught up in the politics when we need prompt action. This is an epidemic that should be treated as such, but one that doesn't require us to isolate the area. Isolation only works in the movies.

I better get a campaign medal out of this one.

The World Health Organisation has recently mandated a new, single use syringe design.

The unique construction of the syringe plunger prevents reuse of each item. After one complete injection, it cannot be drawn back again and will break if tampered with. It is hoped that this cheaply fabricated syringe will lower rates of accidental or misinformed reuse of contaminated needles and thereby transmission of the associated blood-borne diseases.

WHO estimates that 1.3 million deaths occur annually as a result of contaminated needles. Hepatitis, AIDS and viral hemorrhagic fever are all diseases which are targeted by this innovation

As a leader, your default mode should be to share everything with as much of your organization as you can. And no, I don’t mean “everything that wouldn’t look bad if it leaked and doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings,” I mean everything you possibly can.

Leaders always think they know what's critical to share. But if you arm smart creatives with as much information as you can, they’ll be able to solve problems and identify opportunities you might never come up with.

A few days ago, I posted about big data and sex; now I'm sharing a post about statistics and contraceptions, and you may be surprised how poorly they perform.

Sex and Probability

Today it's time for a lesson about sex and the basics of probability theory, because why not? It's also going to be a great opportunity to annoy many people: some of you by telling you that your favorite method of birth control, the one you've known and loved for years, doesn't actually work very well; some of you by advocating birth control in the first place, since birth control is secretly a form of abortion (it isn't); some of you by advocating birth control in the first place, because sex is a terrible thing and should only be done for procreation (I hear you, recognize what you're saying, and have nothing useful to say to you; you should probably just move on); and some of you by advocating probability theory, because mathematics is just an inappropriate subject for delicate young minds such as your own.*

* It has been rumored that thinking about mathematics can cause women's uteri to migrate uncontrollably. It may also lead to bicycle riding and the wearing of pants, and thence to the collapse of Western civilization. You have been warned!

So for those of you who have not yet run away in abject terror, let's take a look at this lovely graphic produced by Gregor Aisch and Bill Marsh at the NYT, showing how likely various birth control methods are to fail. They bring up an important point: normally, when you hear about the success rate of some method, it's given to you as two numbers -- the probability of failure per year when used perfectly, and the probability when used "typically." The difference between the two can range from minor to catastrophic, as you can see from the graphs. (The dotted lines are "perfect," the colored ones are "actual")

However, most people don't just have sex for a year and then decide it's not really for them; most people are happily shtoinking away for decades at a stretch. And in that case, you might ask yourself, what are the odds that this system will fail after ten years?

At first, you might make the obvious naïve guess, that it's ten times the odds of failure per year. But something's obviously wrong with that, because (for example) the rhythm method fails 24% of the time in a year, so that would give you a 240% chance of having a child in a decade. While this may put you on a good path to having the 2.4 children of a typical family, it doesn't sound like actual probability theory.

So let's do the math properly, and then let's talk about birth control methods. This math is useful because once you know the basic methods of probability, you can use them for all sorts of things. (Mathematicians often use "giving someone a lesson in probability theory" as a euphemism for "cleaning them out at blackjack," for example. I promise that's not what I'm going to do below.)

A probability is a number between zero and one which tells you how likely something is to happen, if you try it a huge number of times. Zero means that it will absolutely never happen; one means that it will always happen; and any number in between tells you that it will happen that fraction of the time. (A probability expressed as a percentage is simply 100 times the probability expressed as a decimal)

Probabilities obey two simple rules:

1. If you have a list of all the possible outcomes of a single test, the sum of the probabilities of those outcomes is one: that is, one of those things has to happen. In particular, if you're looking at the probability of a yes/no question, and the probability of a "yes" is p, then the probability of a "no" has to be 1-p.

2. If two events are independent of one another (e.g., flipping two coins), then the probability that both will happen is the product of the two probabilities.

Now, let's say that we want to find out if your birth control will work for ten years. You go to the manufacturer and find that there's a probability "p" that it will fail each year. (For example, 0.02 for a perfectly-used male condom, or 0.18 for a "typically" used one) Now, what's the probability that it will succeed for ten years straight?

Well, that's simply the probability that it will succeed in the first year, and in the second year, and the third year, and so on. The probability that it will succeed in each year is 1-p, by our first rule; so the probability that it will succeed in all of the years is (1-p)(1-p)...(1-p) = (1-p)¹⁰. Or (using our first rule again), the probability that it will fail at some point during those ten years is simply the probability that it won't succeed for ten years straight -- that is, 1-(1-p)¹⁰.

Note what I didn't do: I didn't say that the probability that it will fail in any of the ten years is the probability that it will fail in the first year, plus the probability it will fail in the second year, and so on. In fact, there's no simple rule for the probability of an "either" statement: instead, whenever you work with probabilities, you convert it into a "both" statement like I did above.

The general rule: the probability that either A or B will happen is one minus the probability that neither A nor B will happen. "Neither A nor B" is simply another way of saying not A and not B, so that's simply the probability of (not A) times the probability of (not B). And by our earlier rule, that's (1-A) times (1-B). Or if I phrase that in terms of math,

P(A or B) = 1 - P(neither A nor B)
                 = 1 - P(not A and not B)
                 = 1 - P(not A) * P(not B)
                 = 1 - (1-A) * (1-B)
                 = A + B - A*B

Note that this is almost the naïve guess of A+B: there's just that extra term, - AB, which basically comes from the fact that if both A and B trigger, then it only counts as triggering "A or B" once, but A+B counted it twice. If A and B are both numbers much smaller than one, say they're each 0.01, then A*B is even smaller -- 0.0001 -- and so you can ignore it. But when the total probabilities start to get close to 1, this makes a difference.

So that's how you calculate the probability that something will fail if used repeatedly. To reiterate, if the probability of failure each year is p, then the probability of failure after ten years is 1-(1-p)¹⁰. And that's what was graphed below.

So now, having done some math, let's talk about sex. (This is also the point where I'm going to upset you by telling you that your favorite method doesn't work. Sorry.) The numbers below come from the manufacturers, who have a fairly good reason to want the failure rates to come out low -- but even they can't make them look great.

In fact, we can break these methods into four groups by eyeball:

The ones that reliably work: The bottom row of the graph, hormonal implants, IUDs (both Levonorgestrel and copper), and sterilization, obviously reliably work, even after ten years. Hormonal implants have only a 1% failure rate even after that long. More importantly, these methods show no difference between the "used perfectly" and "used normally" graphs, something which I'll come back to in a moment.

Some things to be aware of with these methods: sterilization is not, generally, reversible, so if you only want temporary birth control these two are out. IUD's have some rare side effects which you should talk with your doctor about -- however, the horror stories that you may associate with them have to do with the very early models made in the 1970's. This was resolved 40 years ago, and today they're considered very safe. Hormonal implants have an extremely low rate of side effects, and are the most reliable of all.

The ones that "work" in a loose sense of the word: The Pill, the Evra patch, the NuvaRing, and Depo-Provera. These have excellent success rates if used perfectly (2-3% failure rate after ten years!), and terrible success rates if used normally. (60% failure rate after ten years!)

A marketing executive from these companies will tell you that these work wonderfully. Speaking as an engineer, this is utter bollocks. A system that works well when operated perfectly and fails completely when anything isn't operated perfectly is basically the textbook description of what a safety system isn't. And in all of these cases, "perfect use" is a much tighter definition than you may be expecting: failure to take a pill at the correct time, or not realizing that another medication that you (or your partner!) is taking cancels out your pill, are the two most common kinds of "imperfect use" which move you from one curve to the other curve. (A large fraction of all oral and topical antibiotics will cheerfully deactivate most oral contraceptives, for example.)

They do have their upsides -- for example, the Pill can be more easily tuned (trying different prescriptions) to find the one that works best with your body. But if I tried to sell you a car and told you that, so long as you keep it in perfect maintenance (you always check your tire pressure before each drive, right?) the brakes will work just fine, you would be awfully suspicious of me. For a good reason.

This brings us to...

The ones that "work" in only the most abstract sense of the word: Withdrawal, the rhythm method, and the male and female condom are sort of like the previous category -- they work much better when they're done perfectly. Unlike the previous category, though, even when they are used perfectly they're incredibly unreliable: in perfect use the best of them (the male condom) will still fail 18% of the time after ten years.

These methods are also the ones most famous for not being used properly, because "perfect use" isn't as simple as it seems. For the male condom, that means storing the condom at the right temperature range and replacing it regularly, avoiding any (even indirect) genital contact before putting it on, using correct lubricants, not using it for too long, withdrawing immediately after ejaculating, bracing the base of the condom properly during withdrawal, and making sure that no semen gets anywhere (including on your hands) during the cleanup process.

In short, these are not good methods at all for avoiding pregnancy. However, two of them -- the male and female condom -- are good methods for avoiding STI's (and in fact, they are the only ones on this list which will do anything at all about that!) and so there is very good reason to use them. However, if you're serious about preventing pregnancy, you should use them in addition to other methods, not instead of them!

The other two methods on this list -- withdrawal and rhythm -- are not serious methods for avoiding pregnancy; at best, they are methods for reducing its frequency. However, the rhythm method in reverse, also known as the "basal-temperature method," is the best place to start when you're trying to get pregnant.

And finally, we have

The ones that do not, in any meaningful sense of the word at all, work: Spermicides, the sponge, and the diaphragm are absolutely terrible at preventing pregnancy. I have to admit that I'm impressed that anyone is willing to market, as birth control, something that when used perfectly has an 89% failure rate over ten years. That's not an advertisement for birth control; it's an advertisement for a fertility treatment.

Also, none of those methods protect against STI's.

Now, after reading through this list, what can we learn?

If you're trying to avoid becoming pregnant or getting someone else pregnant, then by far your best bet is hormonal implants, sterilization, or the IUD. Unfortunately, only one of these is available for men right now, and it's the non-reversible one, but people are working on it and hopefully we'll have some improvements soon.

The various methods in the middle are significantly flaky, but if you combine enough of them they can work. (Again, you can do this with probability theory. Say you use both a condom and the Pill, both "typically." You'll only get pregnant if both fail -- so the probability of that in a year is 0.18 * 0.09 = 0.016. After ten years, our previous formula then gives a total failure rate of 15%, compared to 86% and 61% for using them separately.) Don't rely on any one of them alone.

However, and this is extremely important, don't forget that STI's exist and are a very serious problem. Condoms (and dental dams, and other related barriers), used correctly, protect against them. If you aren't in a completely monogamous relationship with a fluid-bonded partner, or aren't engaging in the sort of extremely rigorous continuous testing regime that porn actors do, then you need to be using them. This is in addition to whatever you're doing to prevent pregnancy!

And on a final note: Sex and probability can be fun. Consider working this into your time with your partner: can you build a model of the probability of orgasm after N strokes (or licks, or caresses, or so on)? Can you use this to work out how the probabilities must be changing with each successive stroke, that the next stroke will be the one to push your partner over the edge?

This will probably work best if both you and your partner are tremendous geeks. But on the other hand, if you just read an entire article about birth control and probability theory, the odds of that are pretty good.___A few days ago, I posted about big data and sex; now I'm sharing a post about statistics and contraceptions, and you may be surprised how poorly they perform.

Flawed World Map?
As we now know the Earth is round. Therefore, the challenge of any world map is to represent a round Earth on a flat surface. There are literally thousands of map projections and each has certain strengths and corresponding weaknesses, but the one you’re now picturing in your head most likely isn’t the area accurate representation.

The most widely used map today is the Mercator projection map. Mercator maps often appear in businesses, in libraries and in classrooms where geography is taught. And here’s a direct representation of the previously assumed factual map with the real flattened version (bottom image)

The Peters Projection Map shows how Africa is larger than the combination of China, the US, Western Europe, India, Argentina, three Scandinavian countries and the British Isles.

Mercator maps show Europe as being larger than South America. In reality, South America is almost twice the size of Europe. Alaska appears to be three times larger than Mexico, although Mexico actually is larger than Alaska. Greenland looks roughly the same size as Africa, when, in fact, Africa is fourteen times larger than Greenland. Africa also looks considerably smaller than Russia, even though Africa is actually 33% larger.

While the orientation of a map might seem harmless, it can have a significant effect on one's perception of the world, and the relative importance of the different place in it. A simple change in the look of a map can cause a reconsideration of your fixed ideas about a place.

I don't believe in a "the one," and I'm a hardy convert of rationality even in love, so this article was quite a refreshing take.

This was (surprisingly?) insightful and rational. I'm a big fan of rationality and due to the nature of my internal landscape, I self audit relatively frequently and try to communicate my changing landscape to those who, while they might not want to know it, probably need to know it. It makes for exciting times in my household, some days.

So, do you self-examine? Do you know, specifically and thoroughly, the ways in which your personal insanities run when they are let off the leash? Why you are as you are? Do you try to accommodate who you are, and not who you think you are, when you are either trying to find a partner or have already made that choice?

Because we all know that guy or girl who's in a marriage they should never have gotten into, that fundamental incompatibility that as outsiders we observe and wonder what kool-aid the pair drank before the altar. And have you ever woken up one days and realized you're in that pairing yourself?

Just how well do you know yourself? ___I don't believe in a "the one," and I'm a hardy convert of rationality even in love, so this article was quite a refreshing take.

Go figure: The biggest problem women face on the internet isn't the harrassers (these sexist fools are a minority), but the majority of men who don't believe women when they express the severity of the harrassment they recieve.

If this were allowed to go unchecked we would have serious problems in the long term; isolation wouldn't really help us.

I normally tell people to calm down when they hear about the outbreak of the latest horrific disease or potential problem or the like. 99% of the time, this is the media getting ahead of itself. After seeing this data about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, I think we may be seeing the 1% here. As the author of this article puts it:

"I’ve spent enough time around public health people, in the US and in the field, to understand that they prefer to express themselves conservatively. So when they indulge in apocalyptic language, it is unusual, and notable.

When one of the most senior disease detectives in the US begins talking about “plague,” knowing how emotive that word can be, and another suggests calling out the military, it is time to start paying attention."

That is, to put it mildly, alarming. Fortunately, there are concrete suggestions about things which can avert disaster right now: in fact, dealing with situations like this is one of the things the military is best at, and dropping in, establishing large field hospitals, setting up various infection-control protocols, and the like could make the difference between an out-of-control epidemic that ravages the planet and something which ends relatively quickly.

The graph of most interest is the one on the right, below, showing cases per day in three countries. Sierra Leone seems to be stabilizing slowly; Guinea is showing oscillations, which probably has to do with hospital visitation patterns and waves of panic in the population; but the really scary line is the one from Liberia. You can recognize it as the one that's pointing sharply upwards. This likely has a lot to do with the increasing urbanization of West Africa, as Ebola has a much easier time spreading in dense cities than in small villages.

Given that we are looking at an estimate of 77,000 to 277,000 cases by the end of the year if we don't do anything, and that this could easily lead to mass political instability -- which would then spread Ebola carriers left and right, and turn a regional issue into a global one -- perhaps now would be a really good time for our political leaders to invest in some goddamned catastrophe aversion.

Really, on the priorities list, this is much more likely to be a threat to our governments' (and people's) collective interests than ISIS.

Hi. I make games. I write about games. I get paid to make games. I used to get paid to write about games. I walked away from paid writing about games, because it was a pretty shitty, corrupt, jaded process that really flew in the face of why I wanted to write about games.

I've talked to a lot of pro- #GamerGate  people over the past few days. I've tried to hear out as many as I could. It was hard. I want to first address why that was hard, then I want to try to address some of the trends between the reasonable, cool people I spoke with.

First off, it's very difficult to wade through the hate. The signal to noise ratio is not good. In fact, it's terrible. If you're reasonable, and you want to have a conversation, it's difficult to do that when the person is hearing ten death threats and thirty insults for every single reasonable message. That mars any perception of credibility for a group that's invested heavily in credibility and ethics.

Now, I've heard a few people say, "Point out the threats and insults when they happen! We'll report those people! They don't speak for us!" I've seen numerous people pointing these threats and harassments out. A couple of very bad times, I saw some people jump in, report, and otherwise shut down the threats. But more often than not (by a wide margin) what I saw was apologism and excuses for the threats and harassment. I saw a lot of "but this time it's warranted!" style messages. That doesn't help anyone. That doesn't build dialogue.

So, if you want to know why there are prominent journalists right now talking about how gamer culture is toxic, and how gamers as a label are dead, this is why. Because even if you're rational, passionate, and wanting good things, your voice is being drowned out by loud, hateful, toxic people.

A couple of days ago, I posted an email from the San Francisco Police Department verifying a police report placed by Anita Sarkeesian. Why? Because a muckraker accused her of lying, and drummed up a BUNCH of hate. His message had over six hundred reshares. His thread had dozens of people talking about how she needs to be imprisoned, how she needs to be shot, and how she's... you get the picture. So, I fact-checked. And I posted the results of that fact-checking. Did I get six hundred people recanting their threats, insults, and accusations? No. I got a couple dozen people threatening me, and a fuckton of people insulting me for DARING to fact-check a journalist. When, mind you, the Gamergate movement is supposedly about holding journalists accountable. Do you know how many messages came up to the effect of, "Oh. I shouldn't have jumped the gun and accused her without the facts?" None. None at all.

So understand why a lot of us say, "This group of people is toxic." It's because a large majority of what we're experiencing is people doing very toxic things. There are some reasonable voices. But from where we stand, they're a stark minority. The movement is about accountability and ethics in journalism, yet the ONLY reaction I got from fact-checking a journalist was hate, denial, threats, and insults. From where I stand, calling Gamergate toxic and hateful isn't a far stretch at all, because it appears to be doing toxic and hateful things.

Yes, there's some positive. Yay, charities. But that's drowned out. And ironically, when we hear about a charity or otherwise positive thing, it's universally used as a method of attack. For example, there was a period where the Gamergate folks had it in their head that Zoe Quinn was lying about charitable donations. They'd trot out, "We aren't lying con artists! We really donate to charities!" Essentially, weaponizing charity. Then, I also heard a lot of people bragging when Zoe's donations were verified officially by the charities, because a group of (allegedly) thousands of people were able to donate more than a single independent game designer. Like seriously, very petty shit.

So, corruption in journalism. Can I let you in on a secret?

We want to have that conversation. We all do, with maybe a couple of exceptions. This is a conversation we've tried to have, and wanted to have for years.

But why aren't we just sitting down and talking it over and smiling and playing games and shutting up about the feminisms? Basically, it's because we're having two completely different conversations. One's an insider conversation, informed about the industry. The other is an outsider conversation, based on half-truths, misunderstandings, and what we see as skewed priorities.

On our side, a lot of journalists hate the nepotism, and most importantly, they hate the relationship the industry has with journalism. Because a while back ago, "games journalism" was essentially coopted as a marketing arm for certain AAA publishers. At that point, AAA publishers became gatekeepers for success in games journalism. It's awful, because we want to be talking critically. We want to be looking at games in different lights. We want to approach these works of art as works of art, and not just as the next success or flop. But that can't happen on any large scale, because of that corruption, because of the commercialism of it all.

The way a lot of the Gamergate stuff looks to us really looks like some strange bizarro world where the games industry works completely different than it really does.

The biggest targets of Gamergate have been people who are frankly powerless in the games industry. People like Zoe Quinn and Phil Fish, they are not gatekeepers. They are not able to enact any real, significant influence on the industry. Most independent game jams, awards, and exhibitions are small groups of people, trying to make names for themselves in their little ponds. That's how independent artists work in pretty much every creative field. They can't compete with the game industry, so they're trying to carve out their own little micro industry, where they do their own things and have a captive audience.

The people being targeted the most are small names, on the fringe of the industry. Even if these people all pat each other on the proverbial backs and promote each other into the ground with the corruption of a thousand watergates, their games will NEVER be as successful as even moderately popular indie games like Castle Crashers. We're talking about games that won't pay a single basic salary if successful. To these games, success doesn't look a lot different than failure.

"SJWs" aren't affecting widescale change in video games. There's some minor change here and there. But most of it is shit that, if you weren't aware was changed, you wouldn't know was any different. If they get what they want, and that's a big if, the end result will be a few more games featuring a little more diversity, and maybe less rape and objectification. This will never, ever approach social justice change in major titles like Call of Duty. The SJWs know that. The Call of Duty developers are making Call of Duty. Nobody expects them to make something else. There's room for Call of Duty. Nobody is trying to take it away. Fuck, the ideal is ultimately MORE GAMES. This is a good thing. Experimental games move the industry forward, and make your core games better. Those games get to be the testing ground where we try out new ideas in a less risk adverse environment.

Anita Sarkeesian? So far, a writer for an already very diverse game was influenced to cop to a trope in his games, and say he won't be using it again. Fundamentally, the game is still a manshooter game. Just, one story element will be swapped out for something else in the future, instead of recycling the same old thing. That's pretty much as far as her influence has gone.

Here's why: She's not trying to enact and force change. She's pointing out trends, the way an art critic does. Some people might look to what she's saying, and ask for more exceptions from that trend. Some developers might see those trends in their work, and shift away. But she's never once said that games featuring sexist tropes should not be made. She even makes explicitly clear in every one of her videos that playing games with sexist tropes is okay, it's not wrong to have fun with those games. But, certain trends do influence attitudes, according to numerous scientific studies. She doesn't say these games will make you sexist. That would be stupid, since she, and numerous SJW types, have played these games. If she was saying that, and she's not, she would have to follow up her videos with, "I played this game. It made me sexist."

Do you know what else this focus on Anita's doing? It's making your games worse. And I'm not saying, "Oh, if you leave Anita alone, she'll make games better". No. But right now, AAA game executives see people like Anita calling for diversity in games, and they're seeing people like Gamergate attacking them vehemently. They see SO much hate. They see 650 people retweeting the guy claiming she lied about a police report. This tells them that the market doesn't want diversity. This tells them to double down on boring, scruffy 30-something male protagonist with a dark past, blah, blah. When we look at games like Watch Dogs, and we think they could have done better if they were a little more ambitious, understand that people shitting on "SJWs" causes that risk averse, milquetoast game design.

You can have discussions about Anita's points. But understand that she's making critique. A lot of it is subjective. A lot of it relies on specific definitions that she gives. For example, it's popular to attack her use of Hitman as an example of Women as Background Decoration. However, the only way it's not a valid example is if you're not actually using her definition. Essentially, you're throwing out her thesis and applying a different thesis to her examples. That's not fair, and it's not academically sound.

But have these discussions! Just focus on the art, the trends, and the culture. Don't focus on the person. Because if your goal is debunking her, you've already lost. Right now, people are throwing so much shit at her, hoping it sticks. Seriously. A journalist literally investigated whether or not she actually made a police report when people were threatening her life, and another prominent blogger demanded police report numbers from her. Neither of these people are entitled to that information. They're trying so hard to catch her up in a lie, that they're losing sight of what they're doing, and how silly and unethical it looks. Why does Anita have to be discredited, if her points are not valid? If her arguments are wrong, discuss them.

Right now, publishers are buying reviews. Right now, publishers are giving large amounts of money and other perks to journalists in order to skew the public perception and influence, both positively and negatively, game sales. Right now, Metacritic is being used to determine whether or not designers get to keep their jobs. Right now, AAA executives are cutting women and LGBT characters out of games in development, because of "the core demographic". These are huge problems. These are problems we want to talk about. These are problems we want to fix.

We aren't going to smile and nod while hundreds of people dogpile a couple of people's sex lives. We're not going to cheer you on while muckrakers are hounding people for answers to stupid, invasive questions they shouldn't be asking. We want a better industry. But we feel that what we're seeing, or at least the bulk of what we're seeing is making a worse industry. ___

I wish Destiny was on PC. I don't need to buy a new console. Free shipping? No! Credit rewards? No! White? No!

Want to go halfsies on a new Playstation for your birthday?

Guess who has an awesome fiancé and will be posting a lot of Destiny related content soon?

The Sedlec Ossuary also known as the Church of Bones is one of the most unusual chapels you will ever see.
The Sedlec Ossuary is nothing spectacular on the outside. It is a small chapel located in Sedlec, in the suburbs of Kutna Hora, in the Czech Republic. You would think that it is just an average old medieval gothic church.

As you enter the Sedlec Ossuary though, you will soon realize why it is one of the most amazing and unique churches in the world. The Sedlec Ossuary is artistically decorated by more than 40.000 human skeletons.

In an age where animation is used often to ludicrous excess, an attempt to snatch on to your orienting reflex and grab your eye, there's a lot to be said for its delicate use: things which are still except for the slightest shifts, focusing your eye both on what moves and on what remains fixed.

If you've followed my discussions on police militarization you know that I've been annoyed at the over-arming of precincts; but this -- a school district -- is absurd.

Dear +San Diego Unified School District,

Please tell me this fuckery is not true.

Dear +Department of Defense,

Please stop handing out your clearly ridiculously excessive surplus of gently used war implements to people who neither need nor know how/when to use them.

Signed,
A Concerned Citizen___If you've followed my discussions on police militarization you know that I've been annoyed at the over-arming of precincts; but this -- a school district -- is absurd.

Wasn't Tennessee the state that banned the word "Homosexual" and hand holding to fight the Gay Agenda? When did they start being progressive?

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam promised his state something unprecedented: free community college tuition.

The “Tennessee Promise” is now more than a promise: It’s a law Haslam signed in May. The bill provides two years of tuition at a community college or college of applied technology for any high school graduate who agrees to work with a mentor, complete eight hours of community service, and maintain at least a C average. High school graduates will start to reap these benefits in fall 2015.___Wasn't Tennessee the state that banned the word "Homosexual" and hand holding to fight the Gay Agenda? BOOM! Goes the Poverty-Myth Shattering Dynamite
There's got to be a better tag line.

Researcher Kathryn Edin gets face-to-face with impovershed neighborhoods and, quite frankly, utterly destroys the preconcieved notions of what it means to be living in poverty.

This article's worth sharing if only to read the Top Ten Povery Myths Busted ad on the first page. Unwed mothers, deadbeat dads, and moral decay? If you think that poverty makes, listen to Fox News too much you might.
