They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to May 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting Msy 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday #handpickedcircles   #sharedcircles #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle2013-05-20 10:32:09218926

Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113479149

Charles Lupica60,136►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers          ►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄Once again it's time to share my circle of the top 500 most followed photographers.  I'm sharing the circle here but I posted the the full list as a series of posts on +Most Followed Photographers on G+. Photographers with an " * " in front of their name are not included in the numbered count because they only share outside content,  their content is content suitable to a blog and usually has no images associated with it, or they have become mostly or completely inactive on G+.This list was complied from two previous lists and a line-by-line search of CircleCount.  If you know of someone that should have been on the list and isn't, the most likely cause is that their +CircleCount profile doesn't include the word photographer, or camera, photo, or foto. Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:145001353799

Question for you

Good evening everyone!
I'm going to be starting a new photographic project soon. Nope, can't say what it is:) But the issue is, I need a higher resolution camera. I currently have the 5D mk 2, and I'm considering getting the new Sony A7r. It looks like it will be perfect for my work.
The issue is, this (long duration) project is going to be expensive enough on its own, let alone having to deal with the cost of a new camera purchase.
So, I'm wondering if my online friends would consider pitching in via GoFundMe.com, to help me raise the money needed for my new camera? I know it is a long shot, but I'm just trying to see if it is even a possibility?
I would offer multiple 'reward' tiers (depending on the amount of each person's donation), including:
desktop images
greeting cards (individual & packs)more »

Seth Godin nails it again:

"It seems arrogant to say, "perhaps this isn't for you."

When the critic pans your work, or the prospect hears your offer but doesn't buy, the artist responds, "that's okay, it's not for you." She doesn't wheedle or flip-flop or go into high pressure mode. She treats different people differently, understands that she is working to delight the weird, not please the masses, and walks away.

Isn't that arrogant?

No. It's arrogant to assume that you've made something so extraordinary that everyone everywhere should embrace it. Our best work can't possibly appeal to the average masses, only our average work can.

Finding the humility to happily walk away from those that don't get it unlocks our ability to do great work."

- Time to delight the weird.... more »

This past fall, Jena and I took Kodi (our golden retriever/son) for a relaxing road trip along the Turnagain Arm, into Portage Valley, and over to Hope, Alaska.
It was an absolutely beautiful day, with spotty clouds, and a pleasant sunrise. The aspen and willow trees were not quite at their peak, except for this pocket of trees, beneath Explorer Glacier (in Portage Valley).
I have always loved the water in this small glacial-melt lake. On days with no wind, it takes on a mirror like surface, reflecting a section of ghost forest (unseen in this view, it is further to the right) that almost looks like bleached bones rising out of the water across the lake. We've also seen (and photographed) moose wading through these waters.
But this morning, the challenge came from spawning salmon, of all places. There were tons of them, and they kept swimming this shoreline, in the shallows, their... more »

I typically don't reveal an image the same day I create it. Photographs typically go through several editing revisions before they are deemed ready for 'public consumption'.
But I'm really excited about this one.
It starts with an explanation. As I walked the trail this morning, about a quarter mile from this view, I stopped for a few minutes to be with a small song bird that was taking its last breaths. It was laying in the middle of the trail, its wing bent awkwardly. It looked up at me warily as I knelt beside it. I don't know how it ended up there, but it made me stop and consider things.
The frailty of life, for one.

This scene is what greeted me at the end of my walk. The trees here are another example of frailty and things that have passed. This is a 'ghost forest', formed after the ground dropped roughly 12 feet during the 1964 earthquake. When the ground stopped liquifying, saltwater from the Turnagain Arm rushed in, killing the trees as they stood. But the trunks remain, preserved in somber beauty.
Throughout the elevated sections of this tidewater slough were millions of small purple flowers.
A final resting place was never more appropriate, or more beautiful.

It has been a little while since I shared a new photograph. That doesn't mean I haven't been creating some:)
I'm busy finalizing several new photographs in my 'Through Time' Series - each of which will be unveiled at our new gallery at Salmon Berry Tours
One of the candidate images for the 'Through Time' Series is called 'Crimson'. While I was on location making 'Crimson', I also made this new, black & white photograph.
It is called 'Withdrawn'.
I hope you enjoy it.

Your response has been extraordinary! Would you help us take this one step further, by clicking the 'Share' button on this post?
Of course our gallery opening/First Friday event is important to us, but we are also trying to raise money for the MDA Alaska.
In early March, they suffered a disastrous vandalism, with tens of thousands of dollars in damages. So, like the poster says, we are selling raffle tickets - with all proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The winner will receive an incredible 28"x36" canvas of 'Genesis'.
Print #1 of 25. I completed the creation of this print yesterday. It is home, sitting in our office with me, as I write this.
I can't stop looking at it.

Fellow fine art printmakers, if you are looking for a source for your ink jet printing materials, I HIGHLY recommend JVH Technical, in Washington. They are a family-run business with incredible support and customer service. We bought our Epson 9900 through them, and use them for the bulk of our paper and ink orders. They are fast, courteous, and have very competitive pricing.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

When I moved to Alaska nearly ten years ago, I did so with the intent of pushing my photography to the 'next level'. I have always had big dreams, but even I had no idea how much this landscape would shape me. Like one of the thousands of glaciers in Alaska, it bulldozed my preconceived notions, and reshaped my artistic and personal goals in an entirely new way.

In the Alaskan landscape, I found myself reborn.

My most powerful fine art photographs are created after I immerse myself in a landscape, often for several days at a time. This immersion develops an intimacy that I strive to portray in my photographs. Only in these moments, when I have made that primal connection to a place, is my soul stirred most.

My most powerful fine art photographs are created after I immerse myself in a landscape, often for several days at a time. This immersion develops an intimacy that I strive to portray in my photographs. Only in these moments, when I have made that primal connection to a place, is my soul stirred most.

How then can a photograph, one that celebrates the vastness of scale that only Alaska can contain, displayed on a computer screen just a few inches across, do that experience justice?
The simple answer is, it can't.

Alaska is a region built upon superlatives. Immersive photographs of this land deserve a proper showcase. A place where people can come and be drawn in by beautiful, large format prints. Prints personally crafted in Alaska by myself. An experience that does justice to the emotions that I felt while making the photograph displayed before them.

I am very excited to announce a new partnership with Salmon Berry Tours. Salmon Berry Tours is the longest-running & most experienced day tour company in Anchorage. Entirely Alaskan owned and operated, we share the same goals. A premier experience that delivers life-long memories that celebrate one of the last great wild places on our planet, and a shared passion for the grandness that is Alaska.

Together, we are creating a new, one-of-a-kind gallery experience.

The new David Ryan Taylor Fine Art Gallery at Salmon Berry Tours opens to the public on Friday, May 2nd, 2014. To celebrate this partnership, we are participating in Anchorage's incredible First Friday Art Walk, from 5-8 pm. Regular hours will be 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, 7 days a week. Starting May 15th, hours expand to 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Additionally, we are proud to support the local branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in a truly unique way. In January, I started a new photographic project. 'Through Time' is a celebration of Alaskan photographic art. The first photograph in this series is called 'Genesis', and it truly marks an exciting new phase in my photographic career. 'Genesis', like all new photographs in this series, will be available as Limited Edition Prints & Canvases. The first print made of 'Genesis' will be a 28" x 36" Limited Edition Canvas, valued at over $2,000. One of only 25 copies ever made. It will be signed and numbered, and then raffled off to a lucky winner. Raffle tickets go on sale tomorrow, Saturday, April 5th. Tickets may be purchased at Salmon Berry Tours, through the Muscular Dystrophy Association, David Ryan Taylor Fine Art Photography, and others. Tickets may be purchased for $5, or 3 tickets for $10. All proceeds will go to benefit the Anchorage branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Great post, and I couldn't agree more.
For the past several years, I've described my photography as a 'selfish art'. I do this for me. If someone else relates or benefits from it, that is a bonus. But in the end, I am a photographer because it is the best way that I know how to express myself. Photography makes me feel whole inside (on a creative level), and without it, my life wouldn't be the same.

Big thanks to Jena for all of her help today. We printed and stretch/mounted several canvas prints today. 'The Beast' (our printer) has been hard at work for several days now, so I think I'll give it the rest of the weekend off:)
Mostly because we are out of paper. That issue gets fixed on Monday though, so rest up 'Beastie':D

What a fantastic day! Today I printed the largest print I've ever seen (let alone printed!), a 4 foot by 12 foot panoramic of one of my favorite photographs. It is called 'Daybreak'.
Looking at this print, resting against the wall of our lab, I feel like I'm back on the Denali Highway, witnessing this sunrise over the mighty Alaska Range for the very first time.
Excited to get back to the lab tomorrow, and create more prints with my wife:)
I'll have her snap a pic of me next to the print tomorrow, for a better sense of scale:)

Shall we begin?
The first panel I'm printing is the far left 1/4 of the panoramic. It, like the others, is 42 inches across by 54 inches tall. The additional 6 inches in width and height is used for the wrap (3 inches on each side). So the final piece will be 48 inches tall by 36 inches wide. This view is a screenshot of our ColorBtye ImagePrint RIP. RIP stands for Raster Imaging Processor, and it takes the place of the Epson print driver. The Epson drivers are good, but are no match for a professional RIP.

After breakfast I'll be heading to our print lab to work on today's
"mostrosi-ject". (That's a monstrosity of a project)
Printing four 48" x 36" canvas prints that will join together to form a 4'x12' final print. After I print them, I'll be stretching and mounting them on canvas stretcher bars.
There was some interest yesterday when I mentioned 'broadcasting' this project as a Google+ Hangout. It is likely going to take a while for the entire thing. Roughly 30 minutes to print each panel, and another 20-30 minutes to stretch and mount each canvas to their frame. So what I will likely do is print and mount 3 of the 4 pieces, then start the Hangout to cover the 4th (final) piece, from printing on our RIP software to our Epson 9900 printer, the assembly of the frame, and the stretching/mounting/stapling.

Would anyone be interested in joining me in a Google+ Hangout tomorrow (Saturday) to 'peer over my shoulder' as I print a 4 foot x 12 foot (yes, I said 'foot') canvas print? After it is printed (on our Epson 9900), I will walk you through the canvas stretching and mounting process. The print will be divided into 4 panels, each one is 4 feet tall x 3 feet wide, then displayed beside each other to form one continuous print. It is kind of a cool, 'behind-the-scenes' look at a part that most people (photographers and collectors) never get to experience.

This is incredibly sick. It is estimated that there are at least 8 times the number of lions bred in captivity (for canned hunts/slaughter) than there are living in the wild. For "Sport Hunting"... What a uniquely disgusting practice.

Question for you

Good evening everyone!

fine art prints in multiple sizes

Is this a crazy prospect? Would any of you be interested in participating? Thanks so much for your feedback!___

Although unlisted in the "9 Natural Phenomena You Couldn't See 100 Years Ago" article, an aurora borealis photograph and description leads off the article.
While I agree with the premise of the article, the aurora borealis was definitely something you could have witnessed 100 years ago (and much further back) provided you lived in northern regions.
Yes, I take photographs of the northern lights, but even lower rated storms produce aurora borealis shows that are easily visible to the human eye. I have stood under aurora that were so bright and so colorful that I could have read a book on a moonless night.
Several of the things listed could have been seen, if you were from the regions they occur in. But photography & videography (not to mention a little something called 'world travel') makes them very attainable for many people today. For that, I am grateful:)

Just got this text forwarded from my wife. I was really excited to read that AT&T had "Great news!" Apparently, a cell tower in our area was just enhanced to improve our wireless experience. Also, I was happy to hear that we are valued AT&T customers.
Then I looked at my reception bars.
Or rather, bar.
So much for that 'enhancement' and being valued...

From this past November's aurora. I'm still awestruck by the ferocity of that night's storm. The waves, the pulsations, the color, the speed.
The feeling of being so small and yet so privileged. Standing beneath a star and ribbon-filled sky, my family there to witness the incredible event at my side.

Just got to see a preview/mockup of the best selling 2015 Aurora wall calendar from Greatland Graphics, which will feature my image "Standing at the Edge of the Universe" as the cover. Very cool. Very cool indeed.

Your 2015 wall calendar dilemma is solved. You are welcome ;)

I can't wait to go home. I can hear the Chugach, the Talkeetna, the Kenai, and maybe even the Alaska Range calling me home, this summer.

I have lots of places I want to see (here in Alaska) this coming year. Some old, some new, all are awe-inspiring. I'm looking forward to sharing them with you.

This was my 'home' for 5 days last summer. I've been fortunate to explore this area dozens of times. Every trip I make though, I realize how little I have seen, and how much more there is to stumble upon.

ps - just for a sense of scale, if you look in the left 1/4 of the pano, you might see a waterfall. This is Reed Falls, and the lowest section you can see is roughly 30 feet tall.___

Just got an email (through my website contact form) asking if I would be interested in a Photo Editing Service for my website photographs...
Really?
Really.
I'm not sure I need that much help with my editing. But, I could use someone to operate my glow stick recharger...

And yes, I'm including his/her/its email address in the pic. Two reasons:

1) maybe someone out there actually wants this kind of service.
2) you spam me, I give your email address to everyone ;)

"Rebirth"
A few weeks ago, +Joshua Cripps and I spent a day photographing along Turnagain Arm, just southeast of Anchorage, Alaska. It has been unseasonable warm here lately, with almost no snow at sea level along 'The Arm'.
Despite having a forecast full of rain and cloudy skies, we hit the road, hoping for some light to grace us. One of our first stops was near Windy Corner, below where the dall sheep hang out. We skirted the rocky hillside, and walked down to the intertidal zone.
It was a new moon, and the tide was fully out. Over the past several millennia, local glaciers have deposited silt into nearby rivers and streams. This fine ground sand was carried out and redeposited along the shores of Turnagain Arm, a broad fjord that separates the Alaska mainland from the Kenai Peninsula.

The silt is covered by ocean water when the tide is in, but as it retreats, the lapping water creates a beautiful texture, almost like dirty meringue with fluffy peaks and small valleys. Small meltwater streams carve smooth, labyrinth-like channels that course through the silty intertidal zone.
This area would be fully covered by water in just a few hours, as the tide comes roaring back in. The Turnagain Arm is home to one of the strongest 'Bore' tides on the planet - as this area re-floods, the water depth increases by over 30 feet, and can create a single wall of water standing over 6 feet tall that rushes up the Turnagain Arm.
A true tidal wave.
I'm really enjoying my new processing method. Rather than rushing to get images out, I'm back to taking my time. After my initial edit of this photograph, I export it and set it as my desktop background. There it sits for 7-10 days. Every time I look at it, I make notes (mental and written) about adjustments I want to try. At the end of the initial period, I make those adjustments and then set the new version as my desktop image for another week. This goes on until I'm "happy" (whatever that means) :D
I'm happy with it now. Most likely, in a few weeks, I'll notice something else that needs adjusting. But that is part of the fun.
ps - A quick note about the name 'Rebirth'. This was the first day I felt 'normal' after 9 days of the flu. It seemed appropriate:)
pss - I've made this photograph available as a free download, for use as a computer or mobile device:

There were tons of them, and they kept swimming this shoreline, in the shallows, their dorsal fins breaking the calm surface of the water, shortly followed by splashing and thrashing as they swam vigorously towards us. All the while, our 'killer' golden retriever paced anxiously at the water's edge, just hoping for one to wander too close. Between keeping Kodi out of the shot, and timing between the salmon's attempts at interrupting my photography, I did manage to get a few good frames :)
Not a bad way to spend a morning with the family.

A little departure from the wide angle landscapes.
I've always enjoyed photographing sections of glaciers. They have so much character. I really like the textures and the mixture of blues and grays.
This is the eastern edge of Northwestern Glacier, in Alaska's Kenai Fjords National Park. Usually, late in the summer, the glacier pulls partially out of the water (as it retreats). The year before this was taken though, the entire glacier had pulled back, exposing a rocky, vertical shoreline across its entire length.
When explorers first discovered Northwestern Glacier (in 1909), its terminus was near the entrance to Harris Bay. Since then it has retreated nearly 8 miles to its current location.

Doing some business journaling. I've been doing this a lot more lately. It has been very interesting, revealing, and (somewhat) uncomfortable. I'm using it to 'clear my head', jot down ideas, and do business exercises to help me learn more of my strengths and weaknesses as a business owner. This will allow me to focus my energies where they need to be focused.
Hopefully... That's the concept anyway.
Does anyone else out there business journal, if so - what has it taught you?

PS - I prefer to journal in notebooks (my preference is Moleskine grid-lined journals). It feels more real, intimate, and cathartic than using Evernote, like I used to.

PSS - Yes, that is a wine glass. It is nearly empty. Wine fridge, I'll be right with you.

The newest Apple iPad Air commercial really speaks to me. Beautifully written and narrated, it inspires me to 'contribute a verse'.
"Medicine, law, business, engineering. These are noble pursuits, necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love... these are what we stay alive for...
That the powerful play goes on, that you may contribute a verse."
For a commercial, it is an incredibly moving message.
One we should all listen to, and find our own response for.

Less than a minute later, the sliver of light was filtered between a narrow pass in the mountains above and to the left of base camp. With the darkening clouds in the background, it made for a dramatic scene to witness. I hope the photograph is able to translate some of the energy I felt while making it.

This is an image from our last major aurora hunt, on November 9th. Jena & I (and Kodi - our golden retriever), were on our way back home after the storm appeared to be fizzling out. It was 2:15 in the morning, and there was just a faint green glow throughout the night sky.
As we neared a section of the Matanuska River, east of Palmer (Alaska), I saw a turnoff I had wanted to checkout for a future shoot... you know, when the aurora was active.
I pulled the car over, hopped out for a quick glance, and noticed a single ribbon of light reaching up from the northern horizon, from behind the Talkeetna Mountains.
That ribbon quickly spread into several tentacles, and within minutes the storm filled nearly the entire sky.
It was a surprise storm, lasting nearly 30 minutes! Kodi sat with his head out the back window of our suv, howling incessantly at the spectacle.
