Graeme McRae30,763Graeme's Circle of Active GooglePlussers! . . . This is a curated circle of active people on Google+ If you add this circle, you will see hundreds of new posts per day in your stream from this circle alone. If you’re in the circle (you’ll know ‘cause I notified you) then please reshare it! It's a circle of people I started following in May, and who have consistently posted something at least once a week during all of weeks since then. If you want an interesting stream, you should add this circle. If you're interested in how I curated this circle, and why I think it makes for a really great stream, read on. . .How did these people get in the circle?. . . They must have posted something interesting, at least once, because I don't follow people unless they post something interesting. By now, you're probably not surprised by the number of people on G+ whose pages are full of repeated posts, videos without comments, "what's up" and other uninteresting things. I don't follow those people. How did they stay in the circle since they were added?. . . After I add someone, I keep them in the circle of people I added around the same time. Then, several times a week, I go through all my circles and delete people who haven't posted (something visible to me) in the last 7 days. So the people who are left in the circle are consistent posters. That says something important about them, because consistency is a proxy for quality.Wait. What? Why is consistency is a proxy for quality?. . . I'll admit it: I don't have the science to back up that wild statement, but I'll tell you why I believe it to be true. People who post crap don't get a lot of followers, and the few followers they have don't bother to engage. After a while, the crappy-posting people start to think G+ is a ghost town, and they lose interest (or funding). On the other hand, the people who share (or re-share) interesting things get followers and engagement, slowly at first, but ever increasing, and this outpouring of love is what keeps them going. That's what I think anyway, and I'm sticking to it.People who share interesting things get lots of followers. . . This is another half-baked theory of mine, but hear me out. You might think this makes sense: Google+ offers suggestions of people to follow, especially to new users. Google+'s only source of names to suggest is other G+ers like yourself. The G+ers who have the most engagement are the ones Google+ knows will be good to follow, so these people get put out as suggestions more often, and some percentage of those suggestions are taken up. So the more engagement you have, the more Google+ will suggest you as a person to follow, and so the more followers you'll get. Completing the theory: the more interesting the stuff you share (or reshare), the more engagement you'll get, and hence the more followers you'll get.Do you punish people for unfollowing you by unfollowing them back?. . . No. Well, not directly. I only unfollow people who haven’t posted in the past 7 days. If you posted privately to your circles or your extended circles, and then you unfollow me, then I won’t see those posts any more, and I’ll assume you haven’t posted in the past 7 days, and, yes, I will unfollow you in that case. But if your posts are public, my methodology doesn’t care whether you follow me.Do you promise me there won’t be any spammers in this circle?. . . No, I can’t make that promise for 2 reasons. First, one person’s spam is another person’s interesting post. A plumbing contractor who posts fascinating details of pipe fitting, each with a link to his company’s website might go either way. Second, a clever spammer will intersperse interesting posts with annoying spam -- maybe 52014-08-12 05:51:49351364461CC G+

Daniel Mihai Popescu51,115This is Wonders, a circle you all know!A "+1" will be greatly appreciated, but of course it is not a requirement. You are not required to do anything :)I hope you receive the notification, and if it is so, it means you are in the circle. The circle is old, but I still do some experiments. #danielmihaipopescusharedcircle   #maximumperformance  When I created the circle, I was curious if you have any proposition of friends to be included :) I still wonder if you have such friends. I shall create another circle, or a combination, I'll see :)Anyway, if you are original enough, and comment on what you like, you don't need to be shared in a circle to become famous, don't you think? If you add this circle (this is the reason of me sharing it), you will have a pleasant surprise on your stream! If you don't believe me, it's your loss.2014-06-18 17:20:574441173785CC G+

Daniel Mihai Popescu49,376This is called Circle Zero and the great majority of you already know it :)There are a few "follow backs" in it, along my precious Invincible, and some other few people I respect! #danielmihaipopescusharedcircle #maximumperformance I share from Firefox this time, and if you don't receive the notification yet again, it means I'm "punished" by Google Plus :)Of course I'm joking, it means nothing, actually. Nobody is compelled to do anything, even if you receive the notification, meaning you are in the circle and you don't have to check it (this operation being made so difficult lately, by our dear G+ programmers, but I understand them: "simpler is better", so I agree). Besides, as +Adriana Popovici so accurately noticed, G+ oriented itself through communication with people not being members of your circles than outlying the members. You see now the "add" or "follow" button when checking out an account is blatantly RED, since your friends have a white one, with the "circle symbol". Nice!Oh, when you notice you're members, a simply "+1" will move me, if not, it's all the same. I keep only valuable people in my circles, so they don't have anything to change to upset me, just maybe to leave me out completely. Even that, won't be the end of the world, you know? Some of the members aren't what you call "engagers", some are not even as active as you may expect, this doesn't make them less valuable, so you can take my word, because I vouch for them! For non members: It is recommended that you add the circle, it'll give you a colorful and meaningful stream :) It's the least I can do, and if I'll make more, you'll notice in time :).Sharing the circle is not going to melt my cold heart, so please, do what you feel, and it is time to learn how to handle elegantly this delicate matter on Google Plus. When sharing the circle, please don't promise your followers things in my name, like "you will be followed back" or stuff like that, because I'm not responsible for the circle members' behavior :)Good luck! Please!2014-05-27 15:09:34480492356CC G+

Daniel Mihai Popescu48,066This is called Survivors! It is a circle dedicated to my invincible plus some surprises.I hope you'll be notified, if not, that's it :)A "+1" as an acknowledgement is a plus for my heart :) #danielmihaipopescusharedcircle   #maximumperformance  Initially it had 345 members, but two were excluded by G+ with the following mention: Some people have not been included in your shared circle. Only Google+‎ users can be shared.I suppose one of them is my eternal invincible, +Dirk Talamasca . I'm not going to remove him, ever. 2014-05-15 11:13:27343392239CC G+

Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/1)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca   #sharedcircles   #circles   #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:25:36432622658CC G+

“Molecular Still Lives” Show the Science in Our Food in Us

Mia Brownell has been painting what she calls “molecular still lives” for over a decade. She begins most works with a base of abstract, swirling forms inspired by the structures of proteins, and then adds foods typically seen in traditional still lives. Grapes are a favorite of hers, as their orb-like shape lends a cellular look. Brownell strives to raise awareness and evoke primal questions about our food supply, from how it is grown and how it functions in our bodies, to how it impacts society.

Her show Delightful, Delicious, Disgusting is currently on view at Juniata College Museum of Art in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Taking a small daily dose of aspirin can significantly reduce the risk of developing - or dying from - bowel, stomach and oesophageal cancer, according to a large review of scientific studies.

Researchers who analyzed all available evidence from studies and clinical trials assessing benefits and harm found that taking aspirin for 10 years could cut bowel cancer cases by around 35 percent and deaths from the disease by 40 percent.

Rates of oesophageal and stomach cancer were cut by 30 percent and deaths from these cancers by 35 to 50 percent.

//Ebola

What happens to your body when you get Ebola?

This morning you woke up feeling a little unwell. You have no appetite, your head is aching, your throat is sore and you think you might be slightly feverish. You don’t know it yet, but Ebola virus has started to attack your immune system, wiping out the T-lymphocyte cells that are crucial to its proper function.

These are the same cells that the AIDS virus (HIV-1) attacks, but Ebola virus kills them far more aggressively. Exactly when and where you caught Ebola virus is unclear, it can take anything between two and 21 days from initial infection to the first symptoms. What is more certain is that you are now infectious yourself. Your family, friends and anyone in close contact with you are all in mortal danger.

For those who suffer from Type 1 diabetes, food can kill. Unable to produce insulin, a hormone that removes sugar from the blood, diabetics must watch what they eat — very carefully.

Blood tests multiple times per day and supplementary insulin shots are an inescapable part of life. But researchers at Boston University and Massachusetts General hospital say they have developed a new tool in battling Type 1 diabetes: the “bionic pancreas.” The artificial organ mimics the function of the pancreas, which produces insulin.

And it’s controlled by a modified iPhone 4S!

Medical Mistakes are 3rd Leading Cause of Death in U.S.

Preventable medical errors in hospitals are the third leading cause of death in the United States, a Senate panel was told today. Only heart disease and cancer kill more Americans.

The Journal of Patient Safety recently published a study which concluded that as many as 440,000 people die each year from preventable medical errors in hospitals. Tens of thousands also die from preventable mistakes outside hospitals, such as deaths from missed diagnoses or because of injuries from medications.

Stem Cells Turned into Blood

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, along with colleagues at three other institutions, report the discovery of two genetic programs responsible for turning stem cells into both the red and white cells that make up human blood. The scientists say their finding is important because it identifies how nature itself makes blood products at the earliest stages of development and provides researchers with the tools to make the cells themselves, investigate how blood cells develop, and produce clinically relevant blood products.

The study (“Direct induction of haematoendothelial programs in human pluripotent stem cells by transcriptional regulators”) was reported in Nature Communications.

In a groundbreaking study that looked at how diet, exercise and other non-drug interventions affect cognitive decline, researchers see some hope for relatively easy dementia-fighting strategies

No one believes that a disease as complicated as Alzheimer’s can be warded off by an apple a day or by faithfully hitting the weight room. But a breakthrough study presented Sunday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference shows that after just two years, people who underwent lifestyle interventions showed improvements in their mental functions, including in memory, executive function and speed tests of their cognitive skills.

A new study published Thursday in the journal Animal Cognition revealed that human beings are the only animals capable of recognizing the dim shadow of their former selves in the mirror. “As our research shows, Homo sapiens remains the sole species with the ability to behold its reflection and identify the youthful visage it once presented to the world,” said New York University evolutionary psychologist and study lead author +Gary Marcus , ...  Marcus also noted that, even after this fleeting view of their former selves fades away, humans are uniquely endowed with the immense levels of self-denial necessary to pretend they’re still the same people they’ve always been. Hah!

Triplet foetuses, coloured 3-D ultrasound scan.
These triplets are non-identical as they are seen in separate amniotic sacs. Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer. The returning echoes are recorded and used to build an image of an internal structure.

It was not so much how hard people found the challenge, but how far they would go to avoid it that left researchers gobsmacked. The task? To sit in a chair and do nothing but think.

So unbearable did some find it that they took up the safe but alarming opportunity to give themselves mild electric shocks in an attempt to break the tedium.

Two-thirds of men pressed a button to deliver a painful jolt during a 15-minute spell of solitude. One man – an outlier – found thinking so disagreeable he opted for a shock 190 times.

Under the same conditions, a quarter of women pressed the shock button. The difference, scientists suspect, is that men tend to be more sensation-seeking than women.

The report from psychologists at Virginia and Harvard Universities is one of a surprising few to tackle the question of why most of us find it so hard to do nothing.

Stem Cells Taught to Self-Organize Thanks to Lessons in Geometry

During embryonic development, stem cells not only differentiate, they start to organize themselves. Rather than merely clumping, they form a distinctly layered structure. Actually, differentiation and self-organization occur together, with stem cells in different embryonic germ layers taking on distinctive roles.

Replicating this process in the lab has proven to be difficult. Researchers tried flooding stem cells with chemical signals. However, simple application of growth factors produced multiple fates without inducing consistent spatial order. Researchers also tried controlling colony geometry. They noted a shift in the proportion of cells adopting different fates as the colony size was changed, but they did not observe spatial organization.

They noted a shift in the proportion of cells adopting different fates as the colony size was changed, but they did not observe spatial organization.

Now researchers at The Rockefeller University report that they have developed an approach that essentially combines chemistry and geometry. Their emphasis, however, is on geometry. In a paper that appeared June 29 in Nature Methods, they wrote: “We show that geometric confinement is sufficient to trigger self-organized patterning in hESCs.”

This is cool: Vincent van Gogh’s Ear Has Been 3D Printed out of Living Tissue and DNA!

One American based artist, Diemut Strebe, has teamed with scientists to produce what may be one of the craziest pieces of art we have ever seen. Strebe has 3D printed the severed ear of late painter Vincent van Gogh.

Using a sophisticated 3D bioprinter, and computer software, Strebe was able to actually print the cells in a shape that resembles the painter’s actual ear. Once the cells were printed, the ear was grown at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Believe it or not, the ear is technically alive, as it is made out of living human cells, which have been formed into cartilage.

The human mind can rapidly absorb and analyze new information as it flits from thought to thought. These quickly changing brain states may be encoded by synchronization of brain waves across different brain regions, according to a new study from MIT neuroscientists.

The researchers found that as monkeys learn to categorize different patterns of dots, two brain areas involved in learning — the prefrontal cortex and the striatum — synchronize their brain waves to form new communication circuits.

Interphase: Period of growth and replication of DNA. (90% of cell’s life).
G1 Phase: Period of regular growth; mitochondria and chloroplasts multiply.
Synthesis: DNA is replicated (semi-conservative replication).
G2 Phase: Another period of growth in preparation of dividing.

Prophase: Nuclear membrane breaks down, DNA condenses, spindle fibers appear.

Metaphase: Chromosomes align and attached to spindle fibers.

Anaphase: Sister chromatids (DNA) are split apart to either pole of the cell by the pulling of spindle fibers.

How #stress can clog your arteries.

There’s a reason people say “Calm down or you’re going to have a heart attack.” Chronic stress—such as that brought on by job, money, or relationship troubles—is suspected to increase the risk of a heart attack. Now, researchers studying harried medical residents and harassed rodents have offered an explanation for how, at a physiological level, long-term stress can endanger the cardiovascular system. It revolves around immune cells that circulate in the blood, they propose.

Fantastic rendering of flights around the globe

Every day, between two and three thousand aircraft fly across the North Atlantic between Canada, the United States and Europe. Airspace across the North Atlantic is divided into six Oceanic Control Areas (or OCAs)

This visualization shows Transatlantic traffic over a 24 hour period taken from a day in August last year and shows 2,524 flights crossing the North Atlantic, of which 1,273 pass through the Shanwick OCA. At its busiest traffic can peak at 1,500 flights a day in the Summer.

The Ferocious Bug That Sucks Prey Dry and Wears Their Corpses

If one thing is true about human beings, from the Mayans to the Chinese to the Celts, it’s that we just can’t help decapitating our enemies and putting their disembodied heads to “good” use. Certain peoples believe the heads provide spirit to the community, others use them to intimidate their foes, and still others shrink them and keep them as souvenirs.

Meanwhile, the aptly named assassin bug looks on and wonders what all the mercy is about, for this insect impales its prey and sucks it dry, then attaches the entire corpse to its back. Not just one or two at a time, mind you—these bugs can be found lugging around massive piles of their foes. Burdensome and unnecessarily sinister, it would seem, but this functions both as visual and olfactory camouflage as well as highly effective armor.

The researchers, led by Martin Lotze of the University of Greifswald in Germany, observed a broad network of regions in the brain working together as people produced their stories. But there were notable differences between the two groups of subjects. The inner workings of the professionally trained writers in the bunch, the scientists argue, showed some similarities to people who are skilled at other complex actions, like music or sports.___
