Virtual Photo Walks™4,361,566Let's do Puako (POO-ah-KO) with +Dominic Phillips and +Virtual Photo Walks™ .  Puako is in Kohala Hawaii. Puako shoreline is a lava-rocky coast with many small tide pools and inlets.  We can explore the shoreline, looking for turtles, crabs, fish, shells, coral and more. Puako's irregular shoreline was created by old lava flows. The most recent of these, from an eruption on the Mauna Loa volcano in 1859, flowed to the coast and well into the ocean where it cooled and hardened. Many fingers of black pahoehoe lava are visible along the Puako shoreline today. The rest of the flow now forms a basalt shelf that runs under the surface of the water for some distance seaward from the beach, then ends abruptly as a cliff-like drop off.The cover photo of a turtle resting at Puako taken two days ago.For more Virtual Photo Walks Information please visit: http://VirtualPhotoWalks.orgFollow Virtual Photo Walks on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+VirtualPhotoWalksTM/postsSubscribe to Virtual Photo Walks on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/VirtualphotowalksFollow Virtual Photo Walks on Twitter:https://twitter.com/thephotowalksWalk The Walk For Those Who Can'tSorry this is not a HOA. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Fraser Cain779,548Super Science Circle - May 2013 EditionNeed more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle. Please share this circle... for Science! For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat. Are you active on G+ and regularly post about science? +mention me and I'll check out your profile.Remember, please share this post2013-05-22 19:26:51456348088
Fraser Cain770,050Super Science Circle - April 2013 EditionIt's time for another sharing of my Super Science Circle. This is a collection of 400+ active people on Google+ who often post about science. If anyone tells you G+ is a ghost town (not that anyone does any more), get them to import this circle. PLEASE SHARE THIS CIRCLE... FOR SCIENCE!I have personally reviewed each and every person on this list, to make sure that they:1. Are active and engaged on Google+2. Regularly post science-related stories on Google+In this list you'll find scientists, journalists, researchers, professors, astronauts and general science enthusiasts. Not everyone in this list is going to be to your personal liking. So what you'll want to do is import the list into a temporary circle. Then move people over one by one into more permanent locations in your circles.I'm always looking for more people to add to the list, so if you know people who meet my criteria, feel free to nominate them.Again, please share the circle. Fraser Cain759,117The Return of the Super Science CircleOkay, I'll admit, I made a mistake in retiring the Super Science Circle. I wasn't wrong; Communities are still the future and the best way to make friends here on Google+. But I realized that the Super Science Circle is simple and efficient way to get new people to see that Google+ isn't a ghost town.PLEASE SHARE THIS POST... FOR SCIENCE!When I was attending +ScienceOnline 2013, I must have helped dozens of people join Google+, and the first thing I had them do was import this circle. It's an invaluable tool for getting new people up to speed. So, I just did a complete refresh on the circle. I examined every single member and judged them according to my two-part criteria:1. Active in the last 30 days or so.2. Regularly post on scientific topics. If you know anyone who might make a good candidate for this circle, please let me know.As always, import this circle into a new, temporary circle, and then you can refresh it when I share a new version.DON'T FORGET TO SHARE THIS POST2013-03-19 22:39:3139967163160

Fraser Cain694,882The Final Super Science CircleWell, this is it, this is going to be the last posting of the Super Science Circle. Why? Communities, that's why. In case you didn't know, I've been maintaining my Super Science Circle from the very beginning of Google+. As soon as the feature to share circles was enabled, I was happy to share those circles around into Google. I did this because it was very difficult for people with related interests (science) to be able to find each other. I wanted new G+ users to realize this place isn't a ghost town; there are vibrant groups of people actively discussing scientific topics. But it was a hack. Each month took me almost an entire day to curate down the list of people, remove the inactive, and incorporate newly active people who often posted about science. And it was always imperfect. Some people got a massive boost in followers and engagement, while other, equally deserving people were left out.It was inelegant, inefficient and arbitrary. But now you can do this all on your own. You can go into any Community that matches your interest and instantly discover thousands of people who share your enthusiasm for a topic - just joining a Community will bring a trickle of posts about topics that interest you back into your stream. Keep your participation in the Community, or circle the most interesting people and harvest them back into your own stream. In the coming months, I'll be suggesting Communities you should join, instead of people you should circle. Thanks to everyone for using the shared circles and helping science get such a firm foothold here on Google+. Thanks to all the past and present members of the Super Science Circle for sharing such wonderful stuff.Science!2013-01-17 02:59:31420544084
Peter Smalley (Merkabah)10,068#sharedpubliccircles   #science  It's been a while since I shared a circle. Let's fix that, shall we? Here is my Circle of Science. Here you will find people who are practicing scientists, science writers, and science enthusiasts - and sometimes all three at once. There are biologists, chemists, physicists, microbiologists, food safety scientists, mathematicians, neurologists, astronomers and many other disciplines represented here. But regardless of their specialties they are intelligent, interested, and interesting.I won't call this a curated circle per se, but I can personally speak to quality of many of these individuals. Many of them are true gems.FOR SCIENCE!2012-11-26 17:29:545015211

The Olive Garden Pasta Pass will cost you more than 100,000 calories
It sounds like a good deal: for $100 you can eat all the pasta, salad and bread you want at Olive Garden for 49 straight days. But taking advantage of the offer has its downsides—perhaps up to 113,190 of them. That’s the number of calories you would likely consume if you were to have a standard dinner nightly at the restaurant for the 7-week period of the offer. That works out to eating about 2,100 calories for dinner alone.
Americans’ average total daily caloric intake is between 1,800 for women and 2,600 for men, according to recent government data.

Google ‘Hired’ a Camel to Take Its Street View Trekker Camera Through the Liwa Desert
In Google’s ongoing effort to ‘Street View’ some of the most incredible places on Earth, the company has pushed the limits of the 360-degree genre once again.
This time, Google set out to capture a panoramic view of the Liwa Desert in the United Arab Emirates, by strapping their Street View Trekker Camera onto the back of a willing camel.
The views captured by the ‘camel-ra’ are impressive and show off just how vast the desert can be. In fact, until objects such as trees and other camels come into the picture, a sense of scale is almost nonexistent — the hills simply look like a never-ending sea of sand.

More than 3500 km traveled in 20 days, capturing landscapes from the bluish tones of Pamukkale to the warm ones of Cappadocia, the all passing by a great variation of colors, lights and weathers through six other cities.
+Leonardo Dalessandri crossed Cappadocia, Pamukkale, Ephesus, Istanbul, Konya; and tasted baklava, kunefe, doner, the turkish tea; and got the chance to meet the soul of Turkey, its people.. and got their smiles and their hospitality.
This is Turkey lived by him from north to south, and I hope you enjoy it.

This sounds a lot like a Harry Potter spell: UNDULATUS ASPERATUS!
Check out this absolutely extraordinary time-lapse of Asperatus clouds taken in Lincoln NE, on July 7 2014 by storm-chaser Alex Schueth.
Asperatus clouds are so rare they managed to escape classification until 2009. Ominous and stormy as they appear, these clouds often break up rather quickly, without producing a storm. As with most other undulating cloud types, these clouds are formed when turbulent winds or colliding air masses whip up the bottoms of the cloud layer into fancy shapes and formations. More common in the plains of the United States (try Iowa), asperatus clouds are at their weird and swirly best during the morning or midday hours after a thunderstorm.

"...This Thursday, September 11, we will commemorate the events that happened 13 years ago on September 11, 2001. None of our Harold Martin School students were even born 13 years ago but many of your older brothers and sisters as well as your parents remember that day quite well. It was a scary and sad time for all of us as many people died in New York City, Virginia, and Pennsylvania that morning due to terrible choices made by a number of people who strongly disagreed with our country’s leaders and what the United States stands for.
But instead of focusing on this tragic event, we should consider the lessons we learned from 9/11:
Immediately after these events 13 years ago, good people around the world showed their kindness and love for each other by reaching out and helping save lives and support families who were hurt by this event. Fire fighters and police officers in particular showed great courage in risking their own lives to save others. Americans put aside their differences by coming together and showing the power of patriotism by reaching deep into their souls and finding the strength to love and help their neighbor no matter the color of their skin, their religious background, or how much money they had. It didn’t matter. All that mattered was that we were all Americans and we would stick together. Soldiers sacrificed their time and lives to fight against those who might harm us and a whole country started taking our own safety more seriously.
So, again what are the lessons? We must show each other kindness and love. We must have the courage to do the right thing and protect and defend each other. We have to put aside differences and care for each other equally which sometimes means sacrifice.
I hope you will keep these thoughts in your mind as you hear more about 9/11 this week. If you ever have questions please feel free to ask your parents, your teachers, or myself. We all feel very blessed to have you as our students.

The "Tribute in Light" memorial is in remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The two towers of light are composed of two banks of high wattage spotlights that point straight up from a lot next to Ground Zero. This photo was taken from Liberty State Park, N.J., Sept. 11, the five-year anniversary of 9/11. (U.S. Air Force photo/Denise Gould)___

Pains of Autumn

Nationalism is the root cause of such ignorance and prejudice.

Over the past century, all the people of the balkan region have been fed a steady diet of propaganda, racism and pseudo-science about themselves and their neighbors. All of this was done in order to brainwash entire peoples into believing that they were the rightful heirs to a glorious and noble civilization like no other. To inculcate them with the idea that their peoples have enjoyed pure, racial continuity since ancient times.
When history is divorced from nationalism and looked at in light of the latest science available, it quickly becomes apparent that all the peoples of the Balkans have lived intertwined, interdependent lives since the beginning of time, regardless of religion.
As the Balkans and Turkey move forward together and the regional economies become increasingly interdependent, nationalisms and the prejudices they breed will become obsolete. Living standards and incomes will gradually rise, and with that, the level of public discourse and civil society will rise as well.
I have been abroad for almost 15 years. As a native Turkish, Greeks have always been my best friends. Similar culture, similar music, similar food, similar emotions… And still my best friends are always from beautiful Greece. I don’t understand why politicians try to feed themselves through hate. Why they don't work on the overall goal of living peacefully and raising healthy generations, real thinkers and good decision makers.
I wonder when nations will start facing the mistakes of their history, and will not intimidate being criticized on that.
And I believe 6-7 September, 1955; is a shame day for Turkish history the story should always be remembered. And lessons should be taken.
The great legend of Turks, a great nation that is claimed with its Turkish hospitality, long history and the 600 years of tolerance for being multi-national, multi-cultural and multi-lingual with different belief systems and religions;  can easily be ruined by a bunch of nationalist ruthless idiots. Lessons should be taken from every single mistake to built up a peaceful future and create a long-lasting peace, friendship and cooperation between the brilliant and beautiful peoples of two nations: Turks and Greeks that lived in harmony for 400 years.

Some Wiki: The Istanbul pogrom, also known as the Istanbul riots or September events is an organized mob attacks directed primarily at Istanbul's Greek minority on 6–7 September 1955. The pogrom was orchestrated by the Turkish government under Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. The events were triggered by the false news that the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece—the house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had been born in 1881—had been bombed the day before. A bomb planted by a Turkish usher at the consulate, who was later arrested and confessed, incited the events. The Turkish press, almost fully under Menderes' control, conveying the news in Turkey, was silent about the arrest and instead insinuated that Greeks had set off the bomb.
A Turkish mob, most of which had been trucked into the city in advance, assaulted Istanbul’s Greek community for nine hours. Although the mob did not explicitly call for Greeks to be killed, over a dozen people died during or after the attacks as a result of beatings and arson.
While the rioters were not instructed to kill their targets, sections of the mob went much further than scaring or intimidating local Greeks. Between 13 and 16 Greeks and one Armenian (including two clerics) died as a result of the pogrom. However, a number of deaths were never recorded due to the general chaos and according to a number of sources the total death toll is estimated to be at least 30. Apart from the from thirty identified victims, an additional of three unidentified bodies were found inside the shops, while three burned bodies were found in a sack in the region of Besiktas. Moreover, 32 Greeks were severely wounded. Men and women were raped and islamized by force, and according to accounts including those of the Turkish writer Aziz Nesin, men, including a priest, were subjected to forced circumcision by members of the mob. Nesin wrote:
A man who was fearful of being beaten, lynched or cut into pieces would imply and try to prove that he was both a Turk and a Muslim. "Pull it out and let us see," they would reply. The poor man would peel off his trousers and show his "Muslimness" and "Turkishness": And what was the proof? That he had been circumcised. If the man was circumcised, he was saved. If not, he was doomed. Indeed, having lied, he could not be saved from a beating. For one of those aggressive young men would draw his knife and circumcise him in the middle of the street and amid the chaos. A difference of two or three centimeters does not justify such a commotion. That night, many men shouting and screaming were Islamized forcefully by the cruel knife. Among those circumcised there was also a priest.

"What a story!"

And just a little bit history:

Most of the territories today within modern Greece's borders were at least once part of the Ottoman Empire from the mid-15th century until its declaration of independence in 1821. The Ottoman advance into Greece was preceded by victory over the Serbs to its north. First the Ottomans won the Battle of Maritsa in 1371. The Serb forces were then led by the King Vukasin Mrnjavcevic, the father of Prince Marko and the co-ruler of the last emperor from the Serbian Nemanjic dynasty. This was followed by another Ottoman victory in the 1389 Battle of Kosova. With no further threat by the Serbs and the subsequent Byzantine civil wars, the Ottomans captured Constantinople in 1453 and advanced southwards into Greece, capturing Athens in 1458. Ottoman Greece was a multiethnic and multicultural society; apart from Greeks and Turks, there were many Jews, Italians, Venetians, Armenians, and various Balkan peoples like Serbs, Albanians, Romans (Gypsies), Bulgarians etc. All these communities lived generally in harmony, but the Greeks remained dominant in the fields of commerce and business. The consolidation of Ottoman power in the 15th and 16th centuries rendered the Mediterranean safe for Greek shipping, and Greek shipowners became the maritime carriers of the Empire, making tremendous profits. The Sultan regarded the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church as the leader of all Orthodox, Greeks or not, within the empire. As a rule, the Ottomans did not require the Greeks to become Muslims. Byzantine historians noted the liberal and generous nature of Ottoman Sultans. Bayezid I, according to a Byzantine historian, freely admitted Christians into his society while Murad II set out reforms of abuses that was prevalent under Greek rulers.
After the unsuccessful Ottoman siege of Vienna, in 1683, the Ottoman Empire entered a long decline both militarily against the Christian powers and internally, leading to an increase in corruption, repression and inefficiency. On the other hand, the position of educated and privileged Greeks within the Ottoman Empire improved greatly in the 17th and 18th centuries. As the empire became more settled, and began to feel its increasing backwardness in relation to the European powers, it increasingly recruited Greeks who had the kind of administrative, technical and financial skills which the Ottomans lacked. From the late 1600s Greeks began to fill some of the highest and most important offices of the Ottoman state. Wealthy Greeks who lived in Istanbul became increasingly powerful. Greek nationalism was also stimulated by agents of Catherine the Great, the Orthodox ruler of the Russian Empire, who hoped to acquire the lands of the declining Ottoman state, including Constantinople itself, by inciting a Christian rebellion against the Ottomans. However, during the Russian-Ottoman War which broke out in 1768, the Greeks did not rebel, disillusioning their Russian patrons. The Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji (1774) gave Russia the right to make "representations" to the Sultan in defense of his Orthodox subjects, and the Russians began to interfere regularly in the internal affairs of the Ottoman Empire. This, combined with the new ideas let loose by the French Revolution of 1789, began to reconnect the Greeks with the outside world and led to the development of an active nationalist movement, one of the most progressive of the time. A secret Greek nationalist organization called the "Friendly Society" or "Company of Friends" (Filiki Eteria) was formed in Odessa in 1814. The members of the organization planned a rebellion with the support of wealthy Greek exile communities in Britain and theUnited States. They also gained support from sympathizers in Western Europe, as well as covert assistance from Russia. The organization secured Capodistria, who became Russian Foreign Minister after leaving the Ionian Islands, as the leader of the planned revolt. On March 25 (now Greek Independence Day) 1821, the Orthodox Bishop Germanos of Patras proclaimed a national uprising. Simultaneous risings were planned across Greece, including in Macedonia, Crete, and Cyprus. With the initial advantage of surprise, aided by Ottoman inefficiency and the Ottomans' fight against Ali Pasha of Tepelen, the Greeks succeeded in capturing the Peloponnese and some other areas. Some of the first Greek actions were taken against unarmed Ottoman settlements, with about 40% of Turkish and Albanian Muslim residents of the Peloponnese killed outright, and the rest fleeing the area or being deported.
Inconclusive fighting between Greeks and Ottomans continued until 1825 when the Sultan sent a powerful fleet and army from Egypt to ravage the Aegean Islands and the Peloponnese. n October 1828, the French landed troops in the Peloponnese to stop the Ottoman atrocities. Under their protection, the Greeks were able to regroup and form a new government. They then advanced to seize as much territory as possible, including Athens and Thebes, before the Western Powers imposed a ceasefire.
A conference in London in March 1829 proposed an independent Greek state with a northern frontier running from Arta to Volos, and including only Euboia and the Cyclades among the islands. The Greeks were disappointed at these restricted frontiers, but were in no position to resist the will of Britain, France and Russia, who had contributed mightily to Greek independence. By the Convention of May 11, 1832, Greece was finally recognized as a sovereign state.
When the Ottomans finally granted the Greeks their independence, a multi-power treaty was formally established in 1830. Capodistria, who had been Greece's unrecognized head of state since 1828, was assassinated by the Mavromichalis family in October 1831. To prevent further experiments in republican government, the Great Powers, especially Russia, insisted that Greece be a monarchy, and the Bavarian Prince Otto, was chosen to be its first king.
