Very enjoyable breakdown of Mad Men's last episode's style choices, right after a thorough and well-argued take on Bob Benson's sexuality (and gay men of that era in general).
Damn I love this show.

Date pickers are one of the must difficult UI elements to get right - they're almost always unnecessarily fiddly. The new ones in Android's GCal app look pretty nice, though that 24-hour clock looks weird - "is it a barometer?" - at first glance.

I love that there's a Wikipedia page for this ("ATM machine and PIN number"):
RAS syndrome (short for "redundant acronym syndrome syndrome"), also known as PNS syndrome ("PIN number syndrome syndrome", which expands to "personal identification number number syndrome syndrome") or RAP phrases ("redundant acronym phrase phrases"), refers to the use of one or more of the words that make up an acronym or initialism in conjunction with the abbreviated form, thus in effect repeating one or more words.

Launch day! The Sweethome is open
I've been semi-quietly gathering data, products, and research on things like cutting boards, enameled Dutch ovens, and, uh, toilet paper for a few months now. This is why: a sibling site to The Wirecutter, The Sweethome, out in public today.
The goal is the same as with the Wirecutter: a list of the best recommendations on things you can buy, without the noise and link-bait of the blog format. When new things come along or products are updated, it updates, but no more than that. Hope it helps you out!
(I've already ordered a clothes iron and ice cube tray during the early-access period)

This is indeed the best (and funniest) reaction to Google Glass yet. If you think +Ron Richards needs his own pair, re-share and let +Project Glass know. He gets my vote.

What happens when your open-source baby gets forked
Some episodes of In Beta are mostly just me asking questions of someone who makes things people actually use. Such was the case with #47, in which I kinda-sorta prod +Gina Trapani into digging into her feelings about having her +Todo.txt app forked into an entirely different (and Google-Play-posted) app. Fun stuff.

I just got my Google Glass last night, and it's been a long time since a tech gadget has had me grinning ear to ear so often. I was at the #tech4dem event, and let +Marci Harris and +Macon Phillips try on my Glass. Both of them quickly got the same big grin!
It's not at all what people expect! It's a magical experience. I haven't yet been quite able to put my finger on why it feels that way, but I think it's the immediacy. Rather than fumbling for your phone, then opening the camera app, you can take a picture or a video with a touch, and share it with another touch. You can also talk to the device, taking pictures, doing google searches, getting directions, or sending emails or texts, without ever touching the devices. (You can wake it up with a touch or by tossing your head slightly.)
A couple of comments:
1. People have this notion that it... more »

In Beta #44 is all about Facebook Home
Why does the press take the automatic tack of "How bad is this for Google, and how can they crush this?" How much do most journalists, even tech-savvy types, know about how Android really works? And isn't Facebook Home a better interface ("launcher") than exists on many cheap or just badly carrier-hobbled phones?

A few weeks ago at SXSW in Austin, TX, I gave developers a sneak peek at the Google Mirror API, which is what they'll use to build services for Glass. With the presentation, we set out to help developers and entrepreneurs start imagining what they could do on Glass.
The Mirror API is a cloud platform that uses OAuth 2.0 and REST as an architecture for delivering a new class of experiences to people using Glass. We walked through the basic building blocks of the API: timeline cards, menu options, share contacts, and subscriptions. We then demonstrated some early uses of the Mirror API on Glass that were built by Evernote, The New York Times, Path, and our own Gmail team.
Developing for this type of device is a little different because you’re wearing it and it’s a very intimate experience. So we also gave would-be Glass developers some recommended guidelines:
