Esteemed co-learners —

An online course offering from Rheingold U.

Introduction to Mind Amplifiers covers the broad theory and practice of intellectual augmentation and the practical skills of infotention, curation, and personal learning networks. The syllabus and schedule: http://socialmediaclassroom.com/host/mindamp6

We use weekly live meetings via audio, video, text-chat, and whiteboard and continuing asynchronous conversations through forums, blogs, wikis, mindmaps, and social bookmarks. RU courses are highly participative — the meta-skill all learners should take away is knowledge of and experience at forming a co-learning community online with a group of former strangers.

Participation is limited to 30 co-learners. Let me know if you are seriously interested enough for me to reserve a spot. (howard@rheingold.com)

I'm offering my online Literacy of Cooperation course for the fifth time  April 30-May 1. The course is totally online, using asynchronous blogs, forums, wikis, mindmaps, and social bookmarks and synchronous sessions using audio, video, text-chat, and whiteboard. The meta-learning is about how to form an online learning community with strangers. I seem to offer this once a year. The cohort is limited to 30 learners and 9 people have signed up, two days after registration opens. Registration will close April 24.  If you've taken a Rheingold U course before, take $50 off the $300 tuition for each course you've taken. And tell your friends! http://bit.ly/cooperationcourse

Why the public sphere matters in the Internet age. I made this 13 minute video for students who didn't realize that many contemporary arguments about the value (or lack thereof) of many-to-many communications to democracy echo arguments that go back to Walter Lippmann and John Dewey, Jurgen Habermas, and older historical discoveries about the early years of print culture. The public sphere -- a realm in which citizens could learn about what their government was doing, participate in (semi) informed discussions about the issues people must understand if they are to become self-governing citizens rather than subjects of monarchs, oligarchs, or dictators, and, through the formation of public opinion, influence policy (c.f., the civil rights movement) -- is undergoing transformation. Is that a good thing? For who? A bad thing? Why?

Is that why I became a writer? I don't know. But the principal was impressed that I could spell "principal." This video about mentoring is all about how a little encouragement of the right kind at the right time can go a long way. http://vimeo.com/43862075___
