This is connected learning if you consider how much of young people's information and knowledge-seeking involves Wikipedia and how it is so rarely connected to traditional curriculum. How to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool: http://bit.ly/10k1Id2

Here is a well-produced video. Lots of introductory stuff -- I get started about 14 minutes in. Howard Rheingold on Net Smart - Keynote for Mediawijzer.net & Utrecht University

This article, written in 2002, is prescient in regard to what we now call "connected learning" -- and one of the best examinations of the phenomenon of virtual community that I've read.

Maybe we need a category for noob questions about sketches? What I am trying to do is to get a diffuse RGB LED to cycle through red, green, blue, yellow, purple more and more quickly and then more and more slowly, then repeat ad infinitum. I also want the cycles to start with each color fading up from off to maximum brightness. Then I want to play with the relationship between the velocity of fading and the speeding up and slowing down of flashing. I hope this makes sense. Ultimately, these are to be the eyes of a sculpture. First, here is a sketch, adapted from Adafruit learning, that I know works for the speeding up and slowing down (although the yellow doesn't seem very yellow and I'm not sure it is flashing purple at all):

//Cycle through red, green, blue, yellow, purple, by varying
//intensity of red, blue, and green.

Anyone interested in having Hangouts for this community at regular times? The connectedlearning.tv webinars are organized in advance and center around particular subject matter experts. The themes of Hangouts with the connected learning community could be determined by community members. Chime in if you are interested. I can set up a Doodle poll if enough people chime in. Suggestions for themes are also welcome. We can play with chat, whiteboard, Google Docs and other tools available to us in the Hangout environment.

PUTTING IDEAS INTO PRACTICE: STARTING WITH TEACHERS

On behalf of the Connected Learning team, I want to invite the assistance of all 322 people who have joined the Connected Learning community. We have had a terrific initial response. But now that the introductions have been made, we need to focus on a few conversations that can draw more people into active participation. We do have a steady stream of posts that draw comments from two or three people. Let's see if we can start some threads that can draw in more people -- dozens, hundreds.

What we propose is this: Let's start threads that are specifically about how different constituencies are using connected learning and making it work. Let's start with teachers. Tell us your success stories! Tell us about your unsuccessful attempts and what you think you learned from them. If we can get some traction on this, then next... more »

Moving this community forward:

We're experiencing the usual pattern -- a flurry of introductions (many people interested in connected learning -- a critical mass if everyone who introduced themselves continues to be engaged!) followed by a hiatus. In my experience, the most lively and sustainable communities balance participant-generated structure and some kind of overarching structure to keep the conversation from being too chaotic. We can use the Categories listed in the left sidebar to further both those goals.

My suggestion -- let's use the "What We Should Discuss" category to generate sustained conversations. https://plus.google.com/communities/113655426574061601680/stream/79e05733-a00e-4b58-849c-f258c746af1a

Dealing with (partially) learner-directed studies in a hybrid university class.

I'm dealing with (somewhat) connectivist learning with my Stanford learners ( http://socialmediaclassroom.com/host/netsmart ) and they are finding it difficult at first to break their usual habit of doing their homework the night before it is due. We have forums, blogs, mindmapping, a wiki lexicon, and wiki inquiry teams, learner lecturers, all going on at the same time. It's not as massive and apparently chaotic as a MOOC, but it's different enough from the routine that I have to continually encourage the learners to devote a little time to it every day instead of a massive session the night before the next class. I give them many opportunities for self-direction. They brainstorm the questions that are most important to them (regarding social media literacies) during the first minutes of the first class... more »

Aloha! Here is my 2 1/2 minute intro. I'll be presenting later in the course, so I want to participate as much as I can before then. However, I'm teaching two courses, so my participation will be sporadic -- one of the things I like about this kind of MOOC is the option to participate sporadically. Some URLs I mention. Aloha! (I'm not Hawaiian, but I've adopted the greeting because it's good for both "hello" and "goodbye" and I like the friendly sound of it).

I'm one of the Moderators here. I'm not really fond of the term "moderator" in this context -- it has gatekeeper connotations that are more appropriate, IMO, in other kinds of forums. I prefer "facilitator."

I'm also an educator. I teach courses on Social Media Issues and Social Media Literacies at Stanford, and used to teach them at UC Berkeley, as well. I blog for dmlcentral, which is related to connected learning: http://dmlcentral.net/blog/3663 and I sometimes moderate the connectedlearning.tv webinars. Aha! Since I checked in yesterday, there are dozens of pretty interesting intros. (Wouldn't it make more sense to have ONE comment thread for intros?) So here I am. I'm a BB fan from the paper zine days. I write, talk, teach, and got drawn into making things when the group of folks I used to make big floats with for Grateful Dead shows started making even larger things for Burning Man. In the process, I stopped painting on canvas and started painting on jigsaw-shaped wood. It's weird, when you think about it: almost all paintings are square or rectangular, no matter how imaginative they painting might be. Then as part of http://pataphysics.us I started adding lights to my paintings. That led to Arduino. Now I've set myself goals of learning electronics and programming. I want my art pieces to respond with sound as well as light. I continue to be interested in many of the other categories of... more »

We have the beginnings of a cohort, but there's still plenty of room in "Literacy of Cooperation," an online introduction to cooperation studies. This is NOT a MOOC -- quite the opposite. It's limited to 35 co-learners, and is highly participative, including live audio-video sessions, forums, blogs, mindmaps, and a wiki. It lasts six weeks, starting January 24. The syllabus, with links to all texts, is public. What you pay for ($300 via PayPal) is the opportunity to participate with me and other co-learners in an intensive learning community. Maybe we should radically revamp the forums? A lot of the conversation threads in the forums from the very beginning are no longer useful. Perhaps they could be archived in some way and then deleted, so that the forums are simpler and easier for newcomers to use?
