We believe that hundreds of high school athletes miss out on an opportunity to continue their athletic careers every year because of a lack of exposure. Visual search on Glass with CamFind
+CamFind's new wearable app went live today, which lets you leverage powerful, non-intrusive image recognition while on the go with +Google Glass. I've stress-tested it a bunch of times this morning, and simply stated, it works.

It's not just that objects are identified, but how particular it is - CamFind can recognize branded items as well as generic objects, as the screencaps I've attached indicate. It seems to use a combination of colors, objects and text as input signals and then gets an idea of what the image is. Amazing.

I'm trying to find VERY obscure items to thwart it. but I haven't been able to yet! The core idea is implemented extremely well on Glass, using voice commands and the shutter button, and card bundles. Without any documentation, it's easy to figure out on the first try.

"Does my Glassware need a web site to be approved?"
I was chatting with a friend earlier today about the process of Glassware review and Google's required materials for submission. One thing she was asking was about the need for a web site to accompany the project - which is primarily to be used, upon approval and listing in MyGlass, as your documentation, which your listing will link to as the Support page.

I obviously can't speak for Google, but in my own experience, this doesn't have to be a full-on professionally-designed web site. While many Glassware vendors go this route, you don't necessarily have to. With my projects, I've previously listed simple resources such as the GitHub README page for my project, or the GitHub wiki for my project, or GitHub's amazingly simple Pages feature, which auto-generates and themes a really nice-looking content... more »

I obviously can't speak for Google, but in my own experience, this doesn't have to be a full-on professionally-designed web site. While many Glassware vendors go this route, you don't necessarily have to. With my projects, I've previously listed simple resources such as the GitHub README page for my project, or the GitHub wiki for my project, or GitHub's amazingly simple Pages feature, which auto-generates and themes a really nice-looking content based on your project. I haven't gotten dinged about the content being irrelevant or insufficient, so it's a cool tip to pass on. It's not the most-polished approach, but seems to work.

(Keep in mind these examples I've cited are basically all the same content, which took me an extra 20 minutes to write-up prior to sending my Glassware off to be assessed.)

https://github.com/jasonsalas/TrendingTimeForGlass/blob/master/README.md
https://github.com/jasonsalas/TrendingTimeForGlass/wiki/Tech-talk-presentation

The bottom line is that it's required you include some sort of helpful information your users can refer to when you get approved, but this doesn't have to be another project in itself. ___

An always-interesting talking point about +Google Glass has been its web browser. Unlike many topics within the Glass community, the browser tends not to be a polarizing issue – in my experience, opinions on the user agent often skew towards the negative, or even more damning, complete apathy (indifference being a fate worse than death for a consumer product). Admittedly, I’m an outlier – in countless conversations throughout Glass’ beta lifespan, whenever the topic of the Glass browser came about I’d typically be The Guy to fly the flag in defense of it. As in, the only guy.

When +Allen Firstenberg and I were writing Designing & Developing for Google Glass (http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Developing-Google-Glass-Differently/dp/1491946458), we initially dedicated a chapter to web access within the head-mounted display. When +Allen Firstenberg and I were writing Designing & Developing for Google Glass (http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Developing-Google-Glass-Differently/dp/1491946458), we initially dedicated a chapter to web access within the head-mounted display. And while in terms of capabilities the Glass browser stands toe-to-toe with other mobile browser platforms, two concerns always bubble up: How is most web content presented in such a small viewport?, and Does the experience of surfing the web on Glass contradict the wearable goal of microinteractions? That’s what we sought to investigate.

Sadly, our material was destined for a place on the cutting room floor, as it just didn’t jive with the rest of the discussion about the system…which in some people’s minds probably serves as a metaphor for the Glass browser overall. Ouch.

So here's our lost chapter, "Wearable web access with Google Glass". It’s still worth knowing what the potentials are for experiencing browser-based content on your head when you inevitably need to step out of the timeline and get on the Web.

Enjoy! ___

Fresh off the cutting room floor, here's a free bonus chapter from my book on wearable development, in which +Allen Firstenberg and I give you the rundown on what the experience of surfing the Web is like in a head-mounted display...and whether it makes any sense in a microinteractions-oriented UX. We also note how the +Google Glass browser's capabilities stack-up to browsers used in other mobile and embedded systems like Kindle Paperwhite, PS Vita, Xbox, Sony SmartWatch, and a Tesla.

Symbolism, anyone?
I'd feel a lot more secure about my financial future if my investments weren't managed by a company named after the guy who built the atomic bomb. By that  same merit, I'd rest easier if our national economy wasn't assessed by a firm named Standard & Poor's.

This week's episode of The Web Ahead sees +Jen Simmons leading a fascinating discussion with developers from +Mozilla Firefox about virtual reality on the web. They mention the implications, challenges, and opportunities that might be on the horizon, using devices like Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard.

This is pretty wild for those of us old enough to remember messing with VRML and Quicktime VR.

How do you use the Glass browser?
When +Allen Firstenberg and I were putting our book on Glassware design together, we drafted a chapter on using the on-board browser. It's one of the most-polarizing topics within our community - some see it as necessary and helpful (since you'll need to go to the web at some point), while others find it to be a clunky implementation and contradictory to the wearable mindset.

Not too many people have built specifically for the Glass browser - although +GlassFrogger is an HTML5 game that's a fantastic example of Mirror API Glassware to access the headset's on-board sensors and generated gestures and motion data, which are passed to an HTTP server running the game instance, in this case moving the character.

I've got some Glassware currently under review, and some of the feedback from the wearables team included this notable gem: a Share/Send option IS coming to the GDK. Such a facility to date has only been available through the Mirror API, using webhooks to link actions with designated sharing contacts, but it's certainly needed.

Great news!

For a really good primer on immersive Glassware with great design, check out +CamFind's new app in MyGlass. It's an effective combination of the Glass user input tools, voice prompts, audible feedback, and card collections. It's a really well done translation of its mobile clients to the wearable model.

UPDATE - I made an interesting discovery: the vocalized cues from the female Glass voice say "Processing image" with an almost Canadian pronunciation on "processing" (try it to see what I mean), and the search results seem to lean towards British and Australian domains.

CamFind also maintains a very healthy API at https://www.mashape.com/imagesearcher/camfind.

Enable the Glassware at https://glass.google.com/u/0/glassware/5008771194826684822, or use the mobile clients for iOS and Android at http://camfindapp.com. ___For a really good primer on immersive Glassware with great design, check out +CamFind's new app in MyGlass. Pushbullet's gotten a lot of positive press lately for the slick new features it's rolled out, but what's not been so trumpeted has been how insanely easy its API is to get started with and use. If you're new to working with web services, this is a great learning lesson.

I built a simple OAuth2 flow handler in Python for App Engine to demonstrate getting up and running with Pushbullet's data. Enjoy!

It still pays to build for Glass
The lingering question of whether it's even worth it to write applications for +Google Glass anymore is very logical and fair. We developers put a premium on efficiency and pragmatism, so our biggest pet peeve is wasting time. However, while the jury's still out (for the moment) on monetizing Glassware, it still pays to build for Glass.

Here's what I tell people who are wondering about the feasibility of writing apps with the Mirror API (https://developers.google.com/glass/develop/mirror/index) and the Glass Development Kit (https://developers.google.com/glass/develop/gdk/):

- Google is still accepting Glassware submissions for review for publishing to the MyGlass repository (https://developers.google.com/glass/distribute/form)

Does development for Glass makes any sense since Google stopped explorer program?
In my opinion it makes sense only for enterprise level customers.

I also think most of apps will slowly stop working since nobody maintain them.

- The userbase is still around 60,000, so it's a good way to test/control apps without worrying about scalability suddenly getting out of hand
- You can still make lots of neat utilities for yourself and your friends and they'll work
- The APIs and UX principles are still very much worth learning as part of Google's strategy for wearables (and that knowledge is still good for comparison/contrast against Android Wear)
- Including a line on your resume that indicates you know how to build for Glass is better than not having it there. Any hiring manager worth a salt will see the merit in having that experience.

It might be a dicey venture at this point in the game to create entire companies around the very-clandestine state of Glass, but as a developer, more than ever, you're able to make the platform work in your favor.

I just ran the new Glassware by +Droiders that lets you broadcast POV video live from +Google Glass to YouTube. It's wonderfully-built Glassware - using an immersion with a visual on-screen indicator that  only I can see to let me know I'm broadcasting live (the same feature that +Livestream uses in its Glassware). There's just a single menu item (Stop Broadcast), which makes usability a snap.

As far as impact on the battery, I broadcast for 5:29 and my battery discharged just 9%. Comparably, that's a little better than we got with Hangouts video calls  - obligatory yearlong moment of silence - or WordLens. With respect to video quality, it seems to only stream-out at a fixed rate of 360p, not 480p like Hangout video calls did. And the video I shared below starts at about 10 seconds into my actual broadcast, so the beginning got cut off. Not too bad.

I ran this at home on good WiFi, so I'm curious to see how this holds up out in the field on LTE, 4G, or even EDGE networks.

However, my concern is that there's no connection to my YouTube channel and/or Google+ profile, so people know I'm streaming live. I'm only notified about the URL I can share to my stream via an e-mail from Streye, which to their credit gets sent out as soon as I start broadcasting. But there's nothing in their documentation (http://streye.com/live/) that indicates this, so this was confusing to me. The access level for videos are Unlisted by default, but you can always tweak the settings mid-broadcast to Private or Public, in addition to being able to edit the clip's title.

Enjoy my incessant 80's references that I used as "I'd better say something or we'll have dead air" narration.

This is a great tool that I'm going to use A LOT.___

The key takeaway of this project, a GDK app, isn't that content is surfaced and auto-updated within a live card - it's in providing the user with the ability to drill-down and hand-off the viewing of the tweets that make up a popular trend on a device more suitable to keep up with the Twitter's pace and UI complexity. A virtue of effective wearable app design is knowing when NOT to keep everything on the wearable device.

While this deck concentrates on Google wearables, the same basic principles apply for other wearable platforms like Fitbit, Oculus Rift, Pebble, and many others.

I built this Glassware app inspired by Android Wear's "Send to Phone" feature to illustrate the important idea that an important decision in proper wearable design is often knowing when NOT to do everything on the wearable. In this case, as is the case on a watch, trying to have users view tweets that constitute a popular trending topic in a limited display geared towards microinteractions doesn't make for a very good experience.

The most outstanding apps get really creative in handing-off processing to more capable devices - and this can be done for presentation, too!

For this installment in my series on tactical wearable application design, I demonstrate how a key element of building effective wearable apps is knowing when NOT to keep everything on the wearable device.

For this exercise, I ported an app I originally built for Android Wear to Glass, surfacing the hottest trending topics from Twitter. But also added a feature that's sorely missing from the original concept: letting users review the tweets that cause a topic to trend by offloading the viewing to other more capable devices. The best wearable services smartly shift processing to other platforms, but this can (and should!) be done with presentation, too.

And even though this deck focuses on Google wearables, the general lessons apply for other brands like Fitbit, Oculus Rift, Pebble, etc.

How much cross-platform wearable work are you doing?
I'm curious how many Glassware developers are porting their ideas to Android Wear in parallel, or vice-versa. I've always had profound admiration for companies like Evernote, Pandora, Netflix, Hulu, Pushbullet, Shazam and all the others others who manage a major concept as a brand across multiple platforms and for a variety of devices.

A lot of my programming work lately has been taking ideas and expressing them both for the watch and Glass. How about you?

Bless this mess
Cool things happen here. This is my workspace, my sanctum sanctorum - garage, recording studio, laboratory, auto shop, kitchen, writing space, weight room, gym, sewing nook, armory, whatever analogy you prefer - where I sit, think, and create. The place where I labor to build things that make people happy.

If you look closely on the smartwatch, you can make out my somewhat long list of bug fixes.

This is my workspace, my sanctum sanctorum - garage, recording studio, laboratory, auto shop, kitchen, writing space, weight room, gym, sewing nook, armory, whatever analogy you prefer - where I sit, think, and create. The place where I labor to build things that make people happy.

If you look closely on the smartwatch, you can make out my somewhat long list of bug fixes.___

Wearable application design: creativity in brevity
One of the reasons I enjoy building wearable software so much is the fact that the user's real world experiences are THE backdrop for the app. The near-infinite number of environments and scenarios where a person might be and what they might be doing while using my stuff are almost impossible to accurately predict. It's an added dimension to the use cases you have to plan for and is the fun challenge of design - knowing how to minimize the required attention span while delivering a solid service that's contextually relevant. High impact, low intrusion.

The challenge of that pulling off that duality can be formidable.

The challenge of that pulling off that duality can be formidable.

After prototyping an app for +Google Glass, I took it for a field test while I walked around the mall. My service surfaces the most-popular topics currently trending on Twitter and displays/updates them in a persistent live card. Out of the blue, a friend sent me a Hangouts message, asking if I'd seen the hilarious new Jimmy Fallon sketch with the Saved By the Bell cast (http://youtu.be/MftOONlDQac). Mid-stride, I glanced at my app, waiting patiently just a single swipe away in my periphery, and saw that the video had already gone viral and was trending. Later on, a similar sequence of events unfolded while I was in line at the grocery store while looking at fruit, and then later while lounging on my couch watching a game.

In all instances, the wearable experience made for a cost-effective transaction, requiring only a few seconds of my life with minimal input. It provided exactly the information I needed when I needed it, then just as quickly got out of my way when I was done.

Mission accomplished! :)___
