Rusty Ferguson54,564♥★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★Ripples of Love -- * Rebuild the Philippines *, V2 from +Rusty FergusonNew Version Updated: May 27, 2014★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★♥This is a circle that supports +Habitat for Humanity’s program to Rebuild the Philippines. To support this circle, you can share it or donate or both.Today was the first day of school in Tacloban. I learned that someone I’m very fond of that is in the second grade needs to bring a portable light to school!  They have no electricity so there are no fans either. Hard to ignore that and I don’t understand it but that tells us the need in the Philippines is still great. We can wait for the government to do it so we need to help as much as possible. These funds will not go to the government but to Habitat for Humanity who is building homes themselves. For some this will be a reminder. Please understand that A lot of people doing a little will have a huge impact. We are making ripples when we post on Google Plus, FaceBook, Twitter and other social media. Why not make those ripples mean something positive? When you make or share a post, those post spreads out across the Internet like tossing a rock into a pond. The Internet is an infinite pond, so our impact can also be as infinite as our zeal to support something worthwhile. What is a little? If only I could get more people to understand that $2.00 is enough if everyone participates we could easily build an entire home for a Filipino family as the cost is under $4500 to build an earthquake and super typhoon resistant home in the Philippines. A home much nicer than most Filipinos live in.If two dollars is all you can give than please give that. It’s enough! Some donated less than a dollar and that too is enough! Every drop expands the ripple.http://www.give2habitat.org/member/rustyf/haiyanHowever, I realize times can be hard. You may not have a dime tospare but you can still help. When you reshare this circle, others will see it.  Though you may not be able to contribute they may be able too. Or they may share it too. The ripple will grow.A week or so ago, I got an email from Habit for Humanity (HFH) requesting additional help for the victims of Typhoon Hiayan. Here is a portion of their email:♥★★★★★★★★★★★★Your commitment to help rebuild the lives of the families who were displaced by Super Typhoon Yolanda inspires me and my coworkers.  Because of you, Habitat has been able so far to repair 22,000 damaged homes and to start constructing the first 1,000 of the 30,000 houses it aims to construct for the Yolanda survivors.I'm writing to you right now -- exactly six months after the tragedy -- in behalf of the Yolanda survivors.  Most of the displaced families are still living in makeshift houses, tents, and evacuation centers. They are currently enduring a hot summer but soon it will be replaced by the country's often very wet season.  I urge you, therefore, to help us remind others about them.♥★★★★★★★★★★★★There was a PDF included that revealed this:♥★★★★★★★★★★★★It’s been six months since Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), made its tragic landfall in the Philippines on November 8, 2014. Aside from the more than 8,000 Filipinos who died and are still missing, the typhoon affected…14 million FilipinosDestroyed or severely damaged more than a million homesWiped out or impaired millions of people’s livelihoods…And dreams. But there’s hope. You can support them by donating through >>>>> http://www.give2habitat.org/member/rustyf/haiyan(Additional options for donations b2014-06-02 12:07:07457161182152

Gregg Lantz2,962Tomorrow is a taxing day here in the United States. You get to decide if you want to buy Glass (sorry IRS). If you're not sure and would like to know what others are saying, add this circle.  You'll be able to look at public posts from people that use Glass and people that purchased Glass and put it on the shelf while software was being developed. You'll get both sides of the story. Hopefully this circle will help make the decision process a little easier. 10 years ago today the metal died
It's now been exactly a decade since a musical icon was taken from us. A decade ago a genius was silenced. A decade ago my co-workers asked me why I was openly sobbing in the office as if I'd just lost a close friend. A decade ago metal just...stopped.

I can only imagine how epic the jam sessions in Heaven that Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie James Dio, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, and Bob Marley are having. And that Dimebag Darrell's still shredding on lead.

The guys over at +Lost Decade Games have a fantastic podcast up noting how it behooves every software developer, regardless of industry, to take up the challenge of making a game (http://www.lostdecadegames.com/lostcast-101/). As a corollary, it's also neat to note how all game developers would really enjoy making a watch face (http://developer.android.com/training/wearables/watch-faces/index.html).

The process uses a lot of the same approaches of a game, and has some new models that make the task of visually expressing time a neat weekend project.

I love the recent parity with Heisman winners from Alabama, Baylor & Texas A&M (and soon most likely Oregon). It's not just a club for USC, Texas, Ohio State & Oklahoma anymore.

On that note, I doubt I'll see a Heisman winner from any of the service academies in my lifetime. And that's unfortunate...and inspiring.

Wearable tech coding doesn't have to be hard (because it's not)
Programming wearable devices isn't difficult, but does requires a completely new mindset about the use cases to which you're catering and the stage upon which wearers will use your application. So to help those interested get acclimated to this emerging style of software development, I've open sourced the Glassware I wrote to let users update their water intake to their +Fitbit profiles handsfree, using voice dictation on +Google Glass (https://plus.google.com/116113014152499702246/posts/JxUnVp4tC63).

The goal is to use wearable computing devices to make life easier - not inundate yourself with even more activities on even more devices just to stay connected. This is precisely the objective of Glass, and this app pulls if off beautifully. I can drink water while I'm working or on the go, literally tell my headset about how much I consumed, and have it update my Fitbit profile without me having to stop what I'm doing to enter data on a web or mobile app. 4 seconds versus 30 seconds.

Because this is a mashup involving a couple of different APIs, with Google and Fitbit using different versions of OAuth - 2.0 and 1.0, respectively - things can get tricky. I forked the Quick Start project's code to handle the OAuth 2.0 flow, and used the +Temboo library for Fitbit for OAuth 1.0 credentials. Temboo is an awesome tool for doing all sorts of stuff on a ton of services and Internet of Things platforms, if you're not using it.

Enjoy...I'd love to see how this gets further forked for other ideas. Happy coding! ___

Platform pivoting for in-play Glassware
Does anyone know (or has anyone tried) changing the underlying developmental platform for their Glassware after it's already been approved and listed in MyGlass? For example, say Evernote's service is currently built using the Mirror API. What impact(s) would occur if they issued a new release completely rewritten based on the GDK? Or, what if Lynxfit shifted their GDK app and suddenly rebuilt it using Mirror?

Would you have to go through the review process again, or submit a new Glassware project, which would overwrite the initial one, or are you free to pivot with the underlying framework?

Log water consumption to Fitbit handsfree via the Mirror API
Mashup apps for +Google Glass integrating +Fitbit are nothing new, as the latter's API is fun to play with and has a decent-sized userbase. There have been a few really good projects to date...but I wanted to write something that I could use with real utility.

Understand that I drink A LOT of water, even when I'm not exercising or constantly on the go. As such, repeatedly logging my intake in Fitbit's mobile and web apps gets laborious and often takes me away from doing more important things. So, I built a really simple wearable service with the Mirror API and hosted on App Engine that lets me use handsfree voice dictation to post updates everytime I hydrate, which updates my Fitbit profile.

#tbt That time I interviewed Jimmy Santiago Baca, the man who wrote and produced "Blood In, Blood Out" (aka, "Bound By Honor"), which is one of the most amazing films of my lifetime. Trust me, anyone age 31-45 can recite every line from this movie - backwards.

And as a bonus, off-camera Jimmy gave me the inside scoop on his plot for the sequel's screenplay. It's seriously incredible.

Here's +Jenny Tong's talk on state synchronization across multiple devices from +GGDevCon: An Independent Google Glass Developer Conference. Good stuff!

And very timely, since the big community interest lately is Google's bridged notifications feature between handheld and wearables, riding on the Android Wear SDK's Node API (https://developer.android.com/reference/com/google/android/gms/wearable/NodeApi.html). At the moment it supports only a single device, but will soon expand to your entire personal network of connected devices.

One feature that I'm glad to see in 4.4W.2 be enabled for all bridged notifications is that the automatic Open On Phone action now wakes the connected handheld up. This wasn't the case in earlier builds, which seemed to be selective and only work for apps like Google Maps Micro...other apps would fire the notification and open the app, but keep the phone asleep and the display off, making more work for the user.

Needless to say, this is great now for custom commands we can add as well as notifications that work right out of the box.

I've had the privilege of reviewing +Eric Redmond's book since its early versions and trust me - you're going to be extremely pleased with the new content he's added to the latest edition. His was originally a Mirror API book, but now he's got GDK material, too.

His coding examples are some of the best around at working with live cards and immersions and getting the most out of each UI element - including developing a video game. This is one of the books I constantly go to when I need am answer to a question I've got about Glassware development and want to see creative application of the concepts.

This is one book your tech library shouldn't be without, no matter what level you are.

Programming Google Glass 2nd Ed is now available in beta. The book has doubled in size since the first edition, and now covers both the Mirror API and the GDK. The book walks through 10 complete working projects, from a QR code scanner, to a voice-to-speech email app, to a side-scrolling video game, and more. Thanks everyone for all of the support!___I've had the privilege of reviewing +Eric Redmond's book since its early versions and trust me - you're going to be extremely pleased with the new content he's added to the latest edition. I've always considered it an honor to interview any member of our armed forces, from generals and admirals, to airmen and privates. I've especially enjoyed sitting down with US Marines and hearing them share their experiences. I have immense respect for anyone who wears the uniform. Yes, they're all skilled riflemen; and yes, they're all trained killers...but they're also some of the most professional people I've ever met.

And for this interview, which we taped last night, I threw in a twist - asking a master sergeant and a captain what their favorite movies about the Corps are. Good answers!

Live cards-as-wearable gaming-stage
One of the interesting things I've gleaned when talking to people about design assumptions is that 99% of the people that study the GDK assume that all games have to be immersions...without any wiggle room. To the contrary, live cards can get the job done and still facilitate a really compelling, sticky, fun game!

You can still create something captivating within the context of a microinteraction while being respectful to a user's attention and a device's battery life, and still obeying Google's best practices.

While we don't yet have dedicated framework tools for gaming for Glass, and Google Play Services aren't available for the GDK, there are still a lot of interesting ways to make live cards work. The best example is ViewTube for Glass (https://glass.google.com/u/0/glassware/9916755632322545955), which from the... more »

It finally broke the mold on live cards just being content-oriented timeline items that get updated periodically by creating a long-running, portable media player. It's a brilliant way to apply the concept.

So don't feel pigeonholed into having to use a particular UI element for a certain type of application. ___

The final version of our book shipped electronically...it'll be in print in December! Super stoked. :)

A new version of the Early Release Edition of "Designing and Developing for +Google Glass" has been pushed out by +O'Reilly! This is final shipping manuscript, with the book being prepped for print!

+Allen Firstenberg and I went through all your feedback, comments, suggestions, and criticisms and made lots of changes based on what you enjoyed, what you thought just took up space, and what you wanted to see more of. The big modifications in the 1st Edition are:

- tons more content in the chapter on the GDK
- a new chapter on making it through the review-&-approval with flying colors to get your Glassware listed in MyGlass...quickly
- how to use the Settings API for localization
- a section on adopting the contextual computing mindset
- new case studies interviewing creators of top-notch Glassware

Major kudos go out to our tech reviewers +Kurt Nelson, +Joe Chavez and +Andrew Pritykin for their input and fact-checking! We felt the cattle prod more than once. :)

We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did putting it together for you.___The final version of our book shipped electronically...it'll be in print in December! Super stoked. :)

There's juuuuust enough overexposed lighting and look of utter disinterest to qualify this as a genuine 90s alternative band album cover. Now all I need is a rainstorm in an alley that I can stand under while looking up, shaking my head with my arms out and stomping only my right foot (that's key), belting out lyrics in a self-loathing baritone.

It'd work for a grunge band if not for the fact that I've showered more than twice this month.

Tricks of the trade
What do you in a pinch when you're hosting a webcast for a big live event and your primary streaming server's TV tuner card gets fried right before you go on? You prop up your laptop with some programming books from your library, point a USB webcam at a PC monitor with a cable TV feed, run an Apple audio cable between the PC and your laptop, then start a Hangout On Air.

Duh.

I'm using Android Studio to build a Glass app, with my SDK Manager updated to GDK Preview API 19 Revision 9, and my device is on XE 21.3. I'm trying to use the new CardBuilder class, but it isn't available. I can still use the deprecated Card class, but the new stuff just won't show up.

I even uninstalled/reinstalled the Android 4.4.2 packages, but nothing. The same occurs when I load the project in Eclipse, too.

Does anyone have tips on how to force this?
