Jess and I have already found a house there and will close on it toward the end of February. We're keeping our house in St. Pete and will be renting it out. 1.7 seconds of demon sailors
#animation   #animatedshort   #animationshorts   #gif

This is 1.7 seconds of a 3 minute animated short film I am currently creating. This 1.7 seconds is at least 14 hours of work, which was done over two weeks in my "spare" time, mostly after 10PM. Each frame is hand drawn (albeit drawn digitally).

Animation is a tedious and nearly masochistic pursuit. The documentary film, The Thief Who Never Gave Up about legendary animator Richard Williams (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) begins as such:

Once upon a time, there was a young Canadian animator who had an idea to make a 90 minute animated feature film based on the art and folklore of the Middle East. Today, 14 years later, after spending one and a half million pounds, the animator still has 80 minutes of film to finish and 10 million pounds to find

Just watched a show on National Geographic about an effort to re-engineer the #HooverDam and while I am highly impressed with the functional innovations, I am sad to see from the conceptual drawings that all the brilliant and iconic Art Deco design elements are being thrown out in favor of something that looks almost 70's futurism.

Film here to stay and analog tech wins in the end
#technology #Art #Science

I used to think that this attachment to film was just a nostalgic or outright stubborn last kick of a dying technology because it is truly amazing how quickly digital imaging quality has progressed, but I don't feel this way any longer. I fully believe that an analog imaging, sound, or data transmission technology of the future will supersede digital technology. I use this term 'analog' more as a device in place of non-digital or post-digital, not actually referring to current or past analog tech. Think of it in terms of neural vs. linear processing. When I look at an object, I receive any image in my field of view all at once. My brain doesn't need to receive it and process it one bit or even packets of bits at a time. Imagine our devices not having to 'load' data. Further, imagine devices that don't resemble our current swath of devices at all. Yes, there will still be processing so to speak. The human brain processes, and this processing takes more time than data transmission. Contrast this with today's data handling, where the destination machine processes faster than the data can be sent and interruptions in data transmission have more amplified effects than with the human mind, which can intuitively fill in gaps. In fact our brain expends almost more processing resources to filtering out data than taking it in. The data is there in an instant and it just needs to be interpreted and filtered for usefulness - either getting banked for later or applied instantly.

Even our digital world is wholly dependent on analog technology. With digital communication, all data is still ultimately converted to analog data for human consumption. I hear digital music as analog waves accessing my brain via my ear (and when the bass is huge, via other parts of my body). While there is efficiency in that for instance, I don't have to travel to be in a space with an orchestra every time from a transmission process perspective, it is clear to me that a future state would forego all this packing and unpacking digitally before it gets converted again to a non-digital form. The future of data transmission will be more like an analog projector casting an image to an analog screen. Sure ... we'll still have some linearity embedded in the process since humans are still beholden to the perception of time, which in our experience is linear. We're still in essence frame by frame receivers, but our non-digital 'frames' have even now, much greater capacity for data than does any of our digital containers or tunnels. Sure, we'll continue to cram more digital data into tighter packages, but in many ways, digital is still Morse Code. More data is exchanged between the analog projector and the analog screen in less time than with any digital technology in existence today and likely ever.

Tech and art communities would be wise to keep analog in the picture. Not solely for nostalgia and in the spirit of having options but also because non-digital tech is a huge part of our more advanced future.___

Business Efficiency for Short Attention Spans

I've decided that I need to use some of my creative skills to enhance my professional portfolio so I am kicking things off with a series of short videos. The point will be to progressively cover each of these 4 factors in more depth and I'll challenged myself to keep each one well under 2 min.

After some delay due to a move, animation projects, and new business ventures, I am pleased to post my first single since arriving in Atlanta. Couldn't let 2014 slip past without a track.

There was also Moby and Blue Man Group but I remember distinctly that Bowie stole the show and that Moby bored the crap out of me. Busta's style was really fresh in that the lyrics flowed together so seamlessly that it was hard to tell where one word became another. Today I was thinking that I pretty much know what Bowie is up to because I keep track but it seemed to me that Busta had fallen off the face of the earth, so I wanted to check in and see what he's got going on. I played the video linked here and in the first short segment I was disappointed because I thought it sounded like a lot of the newer laid back stuff ...all "click pow", which is pretty unoriginal but then not too far into it, Busta takes off as only Busta can. After that Eminem brings his classic self shunning the copycats and extolling himself as the real thing. It's a lot of fun. Check it out.___

Hi everyone, I would really like to hi-light this special opportunity to truly geek out by pre-ordering a rare film on Blu-ray dvd that has been in the can for more than 10 years and on the verge of being forgotten.

In 1999, we set out to make a real film, shot in 35 mm (yes, before youtube and the digital imaging revolution) that captured a time, a place and a theme in a way not quite done before.

Sleeping Pills is a showcase of +M Lauter's talent as a cinematographer and visionary. I have come to appreciate the sub-plot so much more than the surface story. Like the band or not, I almost feel like Arcade Fire had some psychic connection with this film when they released The Suburbs as a reflection of the fast-disappearing environment of their 70's and 80's childhoods. Sprawling shopping malls and strip malls are quintessential symbols of our generation. These modern castles of commerce are now as disposable as plastic microwave dinner trays. More than this, this cycle of build, destroy, and replace is accelerating. Not only are nearly all the shooting locations for Sleeping Pills gone, but last time I was in Denver, a mall that was the grand new thing being constructed the same year we filmed is already dead in favor of another shiny new thing and will surely be gone within another 5 years.

Please consider supporting this campaign to release a new and improved edit of Sleeping Pills by pre-ordering a $25 Blu-ray DVD. If you're from the Denver area, go for the nostalgia. If you favor visual storytelling over thick dialog or action-packed special effects, you might also get into it.

It was mature and we didn't want to take a chance at it turning, but upon tasting it still had some youthful qualities and I think it probably could have stored for another 5+ years. It has a bright red cherry forward, tannic mid-section, and a long peppery finish. Very well balanced with good body while still having that Bordeaux subtlety.

Orson Welles, Citizen Kane and a Universe of Superheroes

When I see a photo like this, I'm reminded of the days of Old Hollywood, when a risk-taker could take on a project like this. When they poured their entire existence behind the films they believed in. I think of the greats of the 60s and 70s, and I remember when Hollywood revolved around more than the visions of Disney, the dancing numbers in the heads of the studios bean counters, and the machinations of Marvel. Film making was so much more than a thousand CGI artists and the computing power of a Cray and days when a box office take of $200m could be considered a failure.

I'm wistful for films that go beyond the superheroes and sure bets of teen vampires and games of hunger. Maybe we'll never see another director like Welles, but I'd take someone who had 1/10 of his guts when they make their films. So much is the bottom line and feeding the corporations now, and we all buy into it. I'm just as guilty as the next guy as I'm addicted to my middle earth and anything in space. But on some days, I wish for so much more now and then...

So cool to see this trailer online. I am still impressed with how utterly slick and stylish all these scenes come off. Michael has an extremely talented eye for location, composition, and visual storytelling. It was tons of fun to work with the rest of the cast and crew on this film.

If you're looking for someone to blame for the rise of overly-sensationalized, lowest-denominator media, you probably need look no further than Wally George and Hot Seat.

Brand Experience   #russellbrand

I completely missed this the first time around, so totally sorry if you've seen this like a thousand times already. I'f you've seen it, move on. If not, it is incredibly interesting and funny in a very uncomfortable (and sort of sad) way. It's like he's the only human at a table of mannequins until he knocks the hosts off their heels (effortlessly I might say) at which point we begin to see their human sides as well. Mika's response is priceless. It's like she's been hit by a sexy and intelligent truck.

Help Save Airbnb in New York

My wife and I use Airbnb at least 60% of the time we travel. As I type this, I am enjoying the pool and waterfall at a host property in New Orleans for my anniversary.

If you are familiar with Airbnb, please sign this position to help protect the service in NY. If you aren't familiar with it, be sure to check it out.

The gentleman this article is about - Tim - is a neighbor of mine. He's so low key, I wouldn't have realized he has such a high profile in both sports journalism and new media. Though I am not a huge fan of animated gifs, it's a really interesting article about a really interesting guy and I can now at least understand the utility and practicality of gifs for getting these bizarre moments out to the world at light speed.

Grip - a study in texture and utility

I just submitted my second graphic to Minted for their most recent framed art design challenge. I think I am starting to get the hang of Minted in that it seems artwork that is a little more ambiguous and suited to decorative purposes does a bit better in the voting process.

Hack this Car
#electriccars   #makermovement

I am not super-crazy about the aesthetics of the finished out-of-the-box version of this build it in an hour car kit. I do think it is pretty astonishing how functional it is for such a low price and assembly and I think it would make a great platform for hacking out more specialized and stylish custom vehicles.

Is This the Last Smartphone You’ll Ever Need? ... SmithsonianMag - "Dutch designer Dave Hakkens has a novel idea for a smartphone that can change your life. Yeah, we’ve all heard these kinds of proclamations before, but what really sets his device apart is that it has the potential to be the last one you’ll ever need.

The phone doesn’t tout any radically futuristic features or even specs that are vastly superior to anything else already out on the market. The secret sauce is in the way that Hakkens re-imagines the phone—each important functional component is a separate modular block that can be added to or removed from the device. By allowing the various parts, such as the speakers, camera and processor to be easily swappable, owners can upgrade different features of their phone individually without ever having to purchase a new one. By allowing the various parts, such as the speakers, camera and processor to be easily swappable, owners can upgrade different features of their phone individually without ever having to purchase a new one. In essence, Hakken’s Phonebloks was conceived to be future-proof.

Hakkens came up with Phonebloks as a way to cut down on the ever-rising pile of non-biodegradable phones and other electronic products consumers are habitually discarding in favor of newer versions. Globally, the problem is referred to as e-waste and statistics complied by the Earth Day Network, a consortium of environment NGOs and activists, show that Americans generate about 50 million tons of e-waste each year and 75 percent of the junk sits in landfills. ..."

This is incredible stuff. This technology should be able to scale really well and I am sure you can imagine all sorts of ways this could be used. That said, I am sure the self assembly idea will scare some people.

Small cubes with no exterior moving parts can propel themselves forward, jump on top of each other, and snap together to form arbitrary shapes.
Known as M-Blocks, the robots are cubes with no external moving parts. Nonetheless, they’re able to climb over and around one another, leap through the air, roll across the ground, and even move while suspended upside down from metallic surfaces.

Inside each M-Block is a flywheel that can reach speeds of 20,000 revolutions per minute; when the flywheel is braked, it imparts its angular momentum to the cube. On each edge of an M-Block, and on every face, are cleverly arranged permanent magnets that allow any two cubes to attach to each other.
