Moderators - HABITUAL LIGHT CATCHERS2,873*Theme for June's group challenge is "Panning".*   #panning *Theme Photo Credit to @111304611691179396185.* Thanks for giving us permission to use your work. _*This is a by invite only event.* All Habitual Light Catchers community members are automatically invited to this event but feel free to share the event or invite other photographers_ Panning is a technique that takes a fair amount of practice, a good eye and steady hands/tripod, but produces photographs that isolates moving objects with a motion blurred background.  Here are some other great examples to inspire you all http://naldzgraphics.net/inspirations/40-examples-of-panning-shots-in-photography/ and there are tons of tip and other great examples online. All the best.  Event Rules:   - *One entry only.* More than one entries results in only your last photo being included, all others will be deleted. You can change your photo but must delete your original entry.  - *Your photos must be a panned shot.* We will leave some room for interpretation of the theme, so if you think your photo has a vague link to the theme then please justify/explain in the description/comments or we will just delete it if we don't understand the link.  - *Entries close 30th June,* so plenty of time to try stuff out and build ideas. You can post ideas on the community page in Photo Challenge Feedback section (minimum three photos/edits) to get early feedback if you wish.  This challenge is designed to put your creativity and test your ability to capture a great panned shot, and give you a chance to practice your camera hold while learning the limitation of you equipment. There are no limits to exposure, shutter speeds or camera type so you can be as creative as you like. We want to gather a great collection of images that the public and members can vote on and show their appreciation by +1ing and commenting. Lots of great ideas have been coming in about future challenges, so thank you to all who have helped build these ideas. Trever McGhee94,166Please accept my apologies if your one of the few that got hit by a bug in their system! This is my first event and for some reason Google notified some people 20 times and for some their system was planning on doing that within their calendars for the next 5 years...every single day...20 times a day...how it did or why it would set peoples calendars up to be notified 20 times a day...I don't know. Hopefully they've got it corrected, if not please let me know. I know I wanted to help peoples wishes come true but not in that way, The goal of this event my Birthday is give you as many of my Birthday Wishes as you require...why because you deserve it. My wish is here is to connect you to the thoughts/ the energy of thousands of people around the world all making a Birthday Wish for themselves from the heart... to you. I like to Imagine the energy from all those making a wish and the energy coming from the ones that come true(the smiles..the laughter..the tears...the overflowing of pure joy) being connected to you to power your own wish to come true. Thanks to some theories about Quantum Physics there's no space between you or me or them...topped with the fact they tell us energy is never destroyed, it's gotta go somewhere as each new person joins in, so why not to you to empower your wish to come true sooner rather than later. Imagine being connected to thousands....millions of others all making wishes...all hoping that your wish comes true for it will help empower their wish. They've documented several cases of where positive thoughts have made a difference, so why not around someones birthday who can then share it with everyone whose connected to that person...so me for this event. It's never been done before, so why not now....be part of it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain as we go day by day, year by year building this community of wish granters. Now think of an image that represents your wish and then take2seconds to think of that image at least once a day until it comes true. Have fun with it, there's no right or wrong way when you come from the heart. Please let us know as each wish comes true...yes each wish...there's no law that says you're only granted one wish...you deserve everyone of them when they come from the heart..when that wish fills you with the passion for life... *****UPDATE at first I was focused on getting as many people as possible for this so that everyone had more energy but now after reading your comments..hearing your passion for life...the numbers have gone completely out the window for each one of you have brought your own unique energy to the equation that's priceless....THANK YOU In my world Birthday wishes can be made everyday of the year because it's a celebration everyday that your here to share this with. So today I Celebrate being 44 and 1 day old.Update to fix Google Bug for "It's My Birthday and my wish is for your wishes to come true!!"2012-08-17 12:00:00202

Mt Hood and Sandy River

The natural beauty of the Mt Hood wilderness belies the hostile conditions faced by the pioneers traveling to Oregon during the 1800's. The view here encompasses the most treacherous stretch of the famous Oregon Trail and was known as Barlow Road.
From the early to mid-1830s (and particularly through the epoch years, 1846–1869) the Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, ranchers, farmers, miners, and businessmen and their families.
Barlow Road was a part of the Oregon Trail. The road was authorized by the Oregon Legislature in 1845, and by September 1846, it made its way around the south side of Mount Hood. This 80-to-110-mile road provided an alternative to the dangerous and expensive route that used rafts to transport wagons down the Columbia River.

Spirit Falls, Washington

The Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge gets most of the recognition for it's beautiful waterfalls but Washington should not be overlooked. Washington has many beauties but most are not quite as easy to get to as the roadside access the ones across the river afford.

While +Kevin Childress was visiting we had the opportunity to venture over to this relatively obscure beauty. The steep talus slope makes the approach less than easy but it was well worth the effort. I've seen a few shots taken from just below and right of where this was taken from and I must say, those photographers are just a little more dedicated than I.

Although I would have loved to have some foreground interest to work with I'm still impressed with the Aurora display I saw last night.

The photo below has absolutely no added saturation or vibrancy (as hard as that may be to believe). It was processed entirely in Lightroom with basic exposure and curves adjustments with a little added clarity.

I must admit that the light show was not nearly as impressive in person as what the camera was able to capture, the blue and purple pillars of light were visible, as was the green glow on the horizon, it just wasn't quite as clear or vibrant to the naked eye.

I took this several years ago on a crisp October day. The fall colors were pretty close to peak and there were a couple of kite-boarders out braving the 40+ MPH winds. Needless to say when I originally processed the batch this one was ignored until today when I was going through the archives.

UFO over Mt Hood!

On the way back from the Columbia River Gorge today I looked over at Mt Hood and saw lenticular clouds forming all along the Cascades and knew I had to make the trip up the hill. This vantage point may look familiar to those who saw a recent post of mine from the same location, it is Jonsrud Viewpoint in Sandy, Oregon.

For Sacred Sunday I present........

A lovely church in Paraty, Brazil as seen from an approaching boat.

Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores (Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows)[
This chapel dates back to 1800. It was used mostly by the rich women of society. Construction was overseen by the presiding priest, Father Antonio Xavier da Silva Braga. The building was later renovated in 1901. The image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade was stolen from this chapel. It was finally recovered in the 1990s, and now can be seen at the Museum of Sacred Art in the Capela de Santa Rita.

Navigating the cobblestone streets of Paraty, Brasil is quite a challenge, especially after a few caipirinha's.

Paraty is a beautiful colonial town that time has forgotten. It's surrounded by hundreds of small islands and secluded beaches.

One of my favorite waterfalls........ever!

Latourell Falls on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. It's tall, easily accessible, close to my house, very photogenic and just plain beautiful! Although Latourell is a popular waterfall, and during the summer you will likely see others around, I often have the whole place to myself if I go mid-week and off season. It's a great place to get your Zen on!

This afternoon at Multnomah Falls. It seems every time I have a day off the wind is howling, today was no exception. The falls are somewhat protected from the gorge wind but still pretty breezy. Crown Point, Just a few miles from this location, had wind gusts of 78 mph and sustained winds of almost 50 mph. Needless to say the high 30's temperatures sure felt cooler than it was suggesting.

I haven't had much time to shoot lately so decided to convert an old favorite to monochrome. This is a photo of Rooster Rock in the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon side.
Rooster Rock was first described by Europeans by the explorers Lewis and Clark as their camping place on November 2, 1805 during their expedition out west.

Day 5 of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge . This is a photo of my friend Frank Murray and his band Petty Fever. Frank and the band were doing a celebration concert for winning the L.A. Music Awards in the category of Best Tribute Band. If you haven't figured it out by now he does an incredible rendition of Tom Petty.

I would like to thank +Ken Fowkes for challenging me, he has always been a great source of inspiration!

Not that it will be much of a challenge because I refer to him as the "Master of Monochrome" but I would like to see more of his latest creations, wadda ya say +Mark Tyler are you up to the challenge?

Day 4 of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  has me converting an old favorite of mine. I have a 16x20" color version of this hanging on my wall and as I was pondering my next subject I looked up and saw it hanging there. For those curious it is Mt Hood Oregon during the blue hour after sunset.

Thanks +Ken Fowkes for giving me the challenge! Hey +Craig Pifer are you game for the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  ? Consider yourself challenged!

Day #3 of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  is about 30 minutes late, but hey it's still Monday somewhere right? This was taken back in April and originally processed with a reduced color pallet. The challenge caused me to remember to go back and try it as a true B&W like I had envisioned earlier.
Like +Ken Fowkes will surely notice, this shot is stepping outside my normal comfort zone of Landscape photography and into something in many ways quite opposite.
Instead of base ISO, small apertures and static subjects, shooting the concert was all about high ISO's, large apertures and constantly moving subjects. Needless to say it was a good learning experience!

In conclusion I would like to challenge +Tom Cooper to take the challenge.

Day #2 of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge . This was taken at Silver Falls State Park in the great state of Oregon. For those that saw my first post of the challenge this is from the same outing along the Trail of Ten Falls. I am thankful to have been challenged by the ever gracious and talented +Ken Fowkes, Thanks Ken!

I suppose I am supposed to nominate someone. Not like it will be much of a challenge because his B&W work is always awesome. But since I haven't seen him posting lately I hereby challenge +Kevin Childress! Wadda Ya say Kevin?

This is a photo of Lower South Falls located in the Silver Falls State Park of Oregon. I took this about a week or so ago but was motivated by +Ken Fowkes to try it out as a monochrome when he suggested I join the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge .

I'm hoping to get out and shoot tomorrow rain or shine, probably rain, maybe not "out".

Lower South Falls from behind.

Located inside Silver Falls State Park, the crown jewel of Oregon's state park system, Lower South Falls is only one of 10 waterfalls located along the aptly named Trail of Ten Falls.

Mushrooms

Eyeing the grass for mushrooms, you will find
A stone or stain, a dandelion puff
Deceive your eyes—their colour is enough
To plump the image out to mushroom size
And lead you through illusion to a rind
That's true—flint, fleck or feather. With no haste
Scent-out the earthy musk, the firm moist white,
And, played-with rather than deluded, waste
None of the sleights of seeing: taste the sight
You gaze unsure of—a resemblance, too,
Is real and all its likes and links stay true
To the weft of seeing. You, to begin with,
May be taken in, taken beyond, that is,
This place of chiaroscuro that seemed clear,
For realer than a myth of clarities
Are the meanings that you read and are not there:
Soon, in the twilight coolness, you will come
To the circle that you seek and, one by one,

Stooping into their fragrance, break and gather,
Your way a winding where the rest lead on
Like stepping stones across a grass of water.

Boabab: Also known as the "Tree of Life", Baobab trees, found in Africa and India, can live for several thousand years. They have little wood fiber, but can store large quantities of water.

I've been kinda quiet around here lately. Any reason why would simply be an excuse, reality is I've just been kinda lazy lately.

Anyhow, I came across this scene as we were driving home from camping a few weeks ago. I saw them as I was driving over a bridge that crossed this small river near the Oregon coast. Of course I had to turn around and capture the setting!
