Stephanie Calahan943FABULOUS WOMEN ON G+ Part 3 of 4My goal was to crowd-source a list of Fabulous Woman on G+ that are Actively posting and Engaging on Google+.  I had originally expected maybe 50 names.  Much to my surprise and , I received over 400+ comments filled with love and positive energy to help curate this list of well over 1384 beautiful people. I would say this was a success and now I'm sharing with everyone PUBLIC.  I hope you will share it far and wide too.  #Google+ will only allow me to share 500 at a time, so the list has been broken down in to 4 circles.  Groups 1-4 do not indicate any specific preference to any woman.  I would have shared one massive circle if I was allowed.Fabulous Women on G+ Part 1 Can be found here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/Srvv4xzeuYmFabulous Women on G+ Part 2 Can be found here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/DRFwReXQvbFWhat You Can Do Now------------------------------------* Add these circles to your own circles by pressing the "View shared circle" button below. Then you can either add it to an existing circle of yours or add it as a new circle by giving it a new name. I've labeled mine "Fabulous Women on G+".  (You won't be able to see the circle on mobile or ipad -- you must be on a desktop or laptop.)  See other G+ quirks below.* Once you've added it, I recommend visiting the stream for this circle and browsing through it to see what you find interesting, encouraging, and enlightening. Then, share some love by commenting, +1ing or sharing the posts of your sisters!* Please note, this is a very diverse group of women.  You're likely to see some people in these circles who will see, understand, or experience things differently than you.  They may or may not share your similar interests.  With that in mind, a few suggestions:     -- If you disagree with someone's views, you can very easily remove them from your circle.     -- Please post public vs to these circles directly.  Each of us has separate preferences on notifications and we want to lift one another up, not bog down notifications.  I hope you all see some increased activity, make some new and inspired connections, and lift one another up as we share each other's brilliance.#fabwomenonG+If You Received Notification About this Circle--------------------------------------------------------------------If you're getting a notification about this it's because you've been identified me or others in the circle as a Fabulous Woman on G+ that is Actively posting and Engaging here.  Original Post: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117590169633617507930/posts/HHzp7g9aW9tI thought you would want to know that you have been identified as someone the G+ community should connect with!  I don't send out notifications unless it is 100% warranted. G+ Quirky Things to Note----------------------------------------* Google+ has a daily limit of 500 for adding people to your circles. Michael Bennett1,614This is my interactors circle for February 2013, this circle is made up of folks that have plussed, shared, or commented on my posts.  I've been busy this month, and it's entirely possible I've omitted folks by accident, as I manage this circle manually.  I'm hoping to play with the G+ API this week-end, and possibly figure out a way of automating this process.  I know it's doable, but I don't know the details yet.  I imagine I follow the API rules for websites, and apply them to Chrom(ium) extensions.  Oh well, I need to learn to make extensions this week-end anyway.  If they're anything like packaged apps it will be easy.Oh if I've omitted anyone, and they notice, just let me know, and I'll fix it up. #followfriday   #circleshare  2013-02-08 15:46:4956927

Alex Grossman24,072For my second Circle today for Follow Friday, here is my Respectful Politics Circle. This Circle is by request only and not for the faint of heart. It's filled with people who are passionate about politics and issues that impact society and come from across the political spectrum - the point is to have fun, learn and share. If you're interested in joining the discussions, please let me know and I can add you to this Circle. No commitment to share your own posts, but it is preferred that you at least comment semi-regularly so as to encourage discussion. Just keep in mind that if you do participate that you do so in a respectful and civil manner. Let your passion fill you, but always temper it with manners, respect and politeness. Bullies will not be tolerated. The point is not to "win" but to learn. #followfriday   #followfridaycircle   #politics  2012-07-20 15:10:0498901

Snowflake-a-Day #59
I’d file this one under “classic” snowflake, but there really isn’t such a thing. We might have preconceptions about what a snowflake should look like, and this kind of crystal likely comes to mine. What our imaginations cannot provide, however… is the level of complex details hidden within. View large!

This was a small crystal, like yesterday’s snowflake. Measuring about 1.5mm in diameter, many of the observable details are only a few microns in size (1 micron = 0.001 millimeters). Even at such a small size, there is colour, geometry and symmetry to enjoy throughout.

The center of this snowflake is a nifty feature, it reveals that this snowflake is part of a “twin”, the other half is behind the main surface, barely visible in the center. This crystal began, as many do, as a “capped” column, and only one of the “caps”(plate crystals that grow... more »

This crystal began, as many do, as a “capped” column, and only one of the “caps” (plate crystals that grow on either side of the column) grew to a fully-fledged snowflake. The other plate remains a miniscule button, starved for water vapour and unable to grow any larger. The lines radiating out from the center are also evidence that this snowflake was once a “sectored plate”. Many snowflake types overlap!

Snowflakes like this capture our imagination… but why? I believe it lies somewhere between geometry and symmetry, in the balance of patterns. While each and every side-branch of this crystal is distinctly unique, they all seem to “belong” to the greater structure. They all have similar characteristics and a similar “feel”, as each side-branch is created by very similar environmental conditions - but not completely identical.

Of course, photographing snowflakes like this can be a daunting task. 34 separate frames were used to get every piece of sharp details, and the final pieces of the puzzle are difficult to fit together. Over time (even over a few minutes), a snowflake will begin to sublimate. The crystal begins to evaporate from solid ice actively as I’m shooting it, and the difference from the earlier frames makes it very difficult to properly blend in later frames. There is some artistry involved, but it’s more tedious that anything. About four hours of editing was done on this snowflake, which is the average for crystals of this nature.

The editing process is time consuming, but not overly difficult if you understand the proper steps. It’s all outlined in the book Sky Crystals, where roughly one third of the 304-page book is dedicated to the photographic techniques and workflow. February is usually the best month to photograph snowflakes – make the most of it! http://www.skycrystals.ca/___

So, this is what +Eric Schmidt really said at #DAVOS  / The World Economic Forum:
Quote:"Looking ahead, Schmidt offered one prediction regarding the future of the internet, namely that “the internet will disappear”. He predicted that the growth of smart devices and the internet of things will eliminate the barrier between being online and offline in the years ahead."
I.e.,  the Internet and all of its things won't be something we focus on, the Net having become so completely integrated into daily life.

We’re graduating from Google[x] labs

It’s hard to believe that Glass started as little more than a scuba mask attached to a laptop. We kept on it, and when it started to come together, we began the Glass Explorer Program as a kind of “open beta” to hear what people had to say.

Explorers, we asked you to be pioneers, and you took what we started and went further than we ever could have dreamed: from the large hadron collider at CERN, to the hospital operating table; the grass of your backyard to the courts of Wimbledon; in fire stations, recording studios, kitchens, mountain tops and more.

Glass was in its infancy, and you took those very first steps and taught us how to walk. Well, we still have some work to do, but now we’re ready to put on our big kid shoes and learn how to run.

Since we first met, interest in wearables has exploded and today it’s one of the most exciting areas in technology. Glass at Work has been growing and we’re seeing incredible developments with Glass in the workplace. As we look to the road ahead, we realize that we’ve outgrown the lab and so we’re officially “graduating” from Google[x] to be our own team here at Google. We’re thrilled to be moving even more from concept to reality.

As part of this transition, we’re closing the Explorer Program so we can focus on what’s coming next. January 19 will be the last day to get the Glass Explorer Edition. In the meantime, we’re continuing to build for the future, and you’ll start to see future versions of Glass when they’re ready. (For now, no peeking.)

Thanks to all of you for believing in us and making all of this possible. Hang tight—it’s going to be an exciting ride.___

That's great if you're a fan of straight lines.

The real question is, if you're the sort of person that follows the more curvaceous graphs, what will our languages be like in 2115?  If we're talking a hundred years hence we're considering a post-human future with radically augmented humans, hyperintelligent AIs, synthbio mergers, distributed consciousness and literally  "business at the speed of thought", to give new meaning to the quoteby ... more »

Shadows of higher dimensions

The icosidodecahedron can be built by truncating either a regular icosahedron or a regular dodecahedron.  It's a beautiful, highly symmetrical shape with 30 vertices.

But it's just a shadow of an even more symmetrical shape with twice as many vertices, living in a space with twice as many dimensions!  The D6 root polytope is a 6-dimensional shape with 60 vertices.  When you project it down to 3 dimensions in the right way, you get the picture here, made by Greg Egan.

In this 3d picture, the 60 vertices of the D6 root polytope lie on two icosidodecahedra, one larger than the other.  How much larger?  The golden ratio!

For the details of how this works, visit my blog Visual Insight:

http://blogs.ams.org/visualinsight/2015/01/01/icosidodecahedron-from-projected-d6-root-polytope/

The vertices of the D6 root polytope are

(±1, ±1, 0, 0, 0, 0)

and all vectors you can get by permuting the coordinates.  You can map 6-dimensional space down to 3-dimensional space in a way that sends these to the vertices of two icosidodecahedra, one larger than the other by a factor of the golden ratio.

But there's a deep underlying reason why you can do it, which my blog article explains!    And the same idea lets you map a beautiful polytope in 8 dimensions down to one in 4 dimensions.   The 8-dimensional one is called the E8 root polytope, and it has 240 vertices.  The 4-dimensional one is called the 600-cell, because it has 600 tetrahedral faces - and it has 120 vertices.  Unfortunately all this stuff is harder to draw.

Puzzle: why is it called an 'icosidodecahedron' instead of an 'icosadodecahedron'?   I've never understood that.

When Gustave Eiffel’s company built Paris’ most recognizable monument for the 1889 World’s Fair, many regarded the massive iron structure with skepticism. Today, the Eiffel Tower, which continues to serve an important role in television and radio broadcasts, is considered an architectural wonder and attracts more visitors than any other paid tourist attraction in the world.
In 1889, Paris hosted an Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) to mark the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. More than 100 artists submitted competing plans for a monument to be built on the Champ-de-Mars, located in central Paris, and serve as the exposition’s entrance. The commission was granted to Eiffel et Compagnie, a consulting and construction firm owned by the acclaimed bridge builder, architect and metals expert Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. While Eiffel himself often receives full credit for the monument that bears his name, it was one of his employees—a structural engineer named Maurice Koechlin—who came up with and fine-tuned the concept. Several years earlier, the pair had collaborated on the Statue of Liberty’s metal armature.

The base pillars of the Eiffel Tower are oriented with the four points of the compass.

Eiffel reportedly rejected Koechlin’s original plan for the tower, instructing him to add more ornate flourishes. The final design called for more than 18,000 pieces of puddle iron, a type of wrought iron used in construction, and 2.5 million rivets. Several hundred workers spent two years assembling the framework of the iconic lattice tower, which at its inauguration in March 1889 stood nearly 10,000 feet high and was the tallest structure in the world—a distinction it held until the completion of New York City’s Chrysler Building in 1930. (In 1957, an antenna was added that increased the structure’s height by 65 feet, making it taller than the Chrysler Building but not the Empire State Building, which had surpassed its neighbor in 1931.) Initially, only the Eiffel Tower’s second-floor platform was open to the public; later, all three levels, two of which now feature restaurants, would be reachable by stairway or one of eight elevators.

But, the search results from +Google are proper and accurate. We have a preponderance of respected scientific study, polling, surveys, and other analysis of hard data that show that results like this from search are to be expected from unbiased data, as unfortunate and wrong as that is. If Google were to add socially engineered bias to search results it would be improper. Its the society that has to change - not the search engines, which should be impartial. When society changes - so will the search results that are only a reflection of how people behave.

#NASA   #solar  Apparently the Sun is off to a happy New Year!

Solar Dynamics Observatory Welcomes the New Year

There were no fireworks on the sun to welcome in the New Year and only a few C-class flares during the last day of 2014. Instead, the sun starts 2015 with an enormous coronal hole near the south pole. This image, captured on Jan. 1, 2015 by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, shows the coronal hole as a dark region in the south.

Coronal holes are regions of the corona where the magnetic field reaches out into space rather than looping back down onto the surface. Particles moving along those magnetic fields can leave the sun rather than being trapped near the surface. Those trapped particles can heat up and glow, giving us the lovely AIA images. In the parts of the corona where the particles leave the sun, the glow is much dimmer and the coronal hole looks dark.

Coronal holes were first seen in images taken by astronauts on board NASA’s Skylab space station in 1973 and 1974. They can be seen for a long time, although the exact shape changes all the time. The polar coronal hole can remain visible for five years or longer. Each time a coronal hole rotates by the Earth we can measure the particles flowing out of the hole as a high-speed stream, another source of space weather.
Charged particles in the Earth’s radiation belts are accelerated when the high-speed stream runs into the Earth’s magnetosphere. The acceleration of particles in the magnetosphere is studied by NASA’s Van Allen Probes mission.

As Solar Cycle 24 fades, the number of flares each day will get smaller, but the coronal holes provide another source of space weather that needs to be understood and predicted.

The first crystal edited in 2015, so I can safely say it’s my favourite so far this year…. But snowflakes like this are contenders for the top spot in the series. Please do me a favour and view large and zoom in to understand why. :)

This snowflake fell yesterday, at the tail end of a snowfall that lasted most of the day. I’m not sure what the significance is, but I’ve found a higher probability of beautiful snowflakes at the very beginning or very end of a weather system. In the final moments of this storm, elegant crystals began to fall… but this only lasted a few moments. I capture one or two on my mitten and photographed them, but I wanted more.

This is where my secret weapon comes in handy. Most of you know that the black background behind my snowflakes is a homemade black mitten. I use this background for a number of reasons; it offers exceptional contrast, allows me to get a background that is mostly out of focus, and acts as an insulator - preventing a snowflake from melting. It also can act like a “Velco” type of surface, sticking to snowflakes that have already fallen. If I gently rest of the mitten on top of freshly fallen snow and then flip it over, it pulls some of the newest crystals away with it, and I can continue my search for the best snowflakes.

This search needs to happen quickly, however. Even 5-10 minutes later, the snowflakes will begin to sublimate to a point where they are only a shell of their former selves. Thankfully I have honed my technique to work as fast as possible and retain as most of the pristine crystal shapes as I can. In this snowflake, you can see harder 60-degree angles on the outside edges of the branches – it hasn’t deteriorated very much since it fell to earth.

Few storms produce large dendrite crystals with geometrically beautiful centers. I find these crystals among the most appealing, and I’m constantly searching newly fallen snow for signs of these snowflakes. These snowflakes take longer to edit (54 frames in total used for focus stacking, five and a half hours of editing) but they’re always worth it.

Check out Sky Crystals to understand all of the physics and photographic techniques seen in images like this: http://www.skycrystals.ca/ - you’d be amazed how much you can discover inside a single snowflake!___
