Do any of you live in Jacksonville, Florida?

Okay, WTF good is it to have 8.7k followers if I can't unearth a *single* follower in Jacksonville, FL, or somebody who's willing to boost the signal for a freaking humanitarian reason.

I've got a friend who has had recent health issues, who is out on the streets with no place to stay. He needs a place to couch surf for a few days so we can get him off the fucking street.

Can *anybody* help with this??

If you can, please PM me and I will put you directly in touch with him. If not, can you *please* boost the signal??

Thank you!___Do any of you live in Jacksonville, Florida?

EXCELLENT READ - This is the kind intellectual support #Bernie2016 draws. It speaks volumes of the appreciation for Bernie and his efforts to win the democratic nomination and to become President of the United States.

Let's just stop boomersplaining politics to millennials
By CCBOhio

The following is a response to “This Progressive Doesn’t Need Your Lectures” by syndicated columnist Connie Schultz (National Memo, February 4, 2016). (http://goo.gl/rn2Fxg)

Dear Connie:

I wish I had learned about you under circumstances other than a heated Democratic primary election for president. I suspect we would probably agree on most issues.

But I cannot stand by and read your continued criticisms of the Bernie Sanders campaign and his supporters. You say they don’t understand you. Well, you clearly do not understand them.

In your latest column, you tell Sanders supporters who say they won’t vote for Hillary Clinton that they can’t call themselves progressives.

Here’s the thing: Many of them don’t. Some of Sanders’ supporters are not even Democrats. Sanders is attracting a broad cross-section of supporters including Democrats, Independents and even some Republicans. Right or wrong, some of them don’t like Hillary and feel no need to support the Democratic Party. They joined the campaign because they support Bernie.

One reason people from so many different walks of political life like Bernie is that he is consistent. He has been saying the same thing for 30 years. Another reason is that he is not in this for himself – he genuinely has the best interest of ordinary Americans at heart.

But most important, in a system that has been corrupted at every turn by corporate power and big money politics, Sanders does not have a SuperPAC and is not taking money from billionaires. His campaign is completely funded by small donations from millions of ordinary Americans.

Is it important where campaign donations come from? You said on your Facebook page that you are “not uncomfortable with Hillary's Clinton's Wall Street donations” because you can’t “connect the dots between dollars donated and legislation the candidate supports after election.”

Surely you understand that such an obvious quid pro quo would be extremely difficult to prove. At the very least our campaign finance system has the appearance of a conflict of interest. Former President Jimmy Carter called it “legalized bribery,” while Sen. Elizabeth Warren recalled a time when campaign donations did appear to change Secretary Clinton’s vote.

To be fair, Hillary Clinton is certainly not the only candidate to face such questions about conflict of interest. This is how our current campaign finance system works, and politicians across the board are trying to work within it. But that doesn’t make it right.

Perhaps money doesn’t buy votes outright. But what it does buy is access – access that the Democratic National Committee has already promised to sell to the highest bidder at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

This is the kind of access ordinary citizens will never have -- and the result is they are not heard. Academic research shows that the American political system has become so unequal that we now live in an oligarchy. Is it any wonder Americans of all political persuasions are outraged?

Here’s another thing. It doesn’t help to opine that female Sanders supporters “disappoint” you while characterizing male Sanders supporters as “young white men who were still braying for their blankies when I started getting paid to give my opinion.”

First, if Clinton wins the nomination, she is going to need as much support as she can get. Do you really think such condescension will help win anyone over? If you want Sanders supporters to support Clinton, how is such sarcasm going to earn their votes?

More to the point, young people support Sanders over Clinton 84 to 14 percent. Have you thought about why that might be – what issues young people face that might lead them to make this choice?

Young people today face crippling student loan debt that did not exist when you and I went to college. They must have a college degree to get a job, yet when they get out with tens of thousands, maybe even six figures in debt, they face a terrible job market -- due to an economy that continues not to recover because of high levels of inequality in which most of the wealth goes to the very top.

Young people are also inheriting a planet whose environment has been pushed to the brink of collapse. Ocean acidification threatens the plankton that make up the base of the world’s food chain. Species are going extinct 1000 times faster than normal. Climate change is creating millions of environmental refugees, hampering our ability to feed ourselves, and unleashing new viruses.

This is the future young people have to face. Is it any wonder they are not doing basic things like getting married, buying a house, or starting a family? Every environmental and economic indicator we have is telling us that we must make major change. Millennials’ choice of Bernie Sanders for president makes perfect sense, and boomer-age Democrats simply have to stop bashing them for it.

Young people are also critical to the future of the Democratic Party. The party would be much better served if its leaders could figure out how to bring young Sanders supporters into the fold rather than ignoring them, silencing them, mocking them, or claiming their priorities will “never, ever” happen.

One point you make throughout your writing is that your generation of women has faced untold amounts of blatant sexism. I get that. I’m glad that at age 17 you dumped a steaming pile of pasta into the lap of that banker who tried to feel you up. He completely deserved it.

I also get that women like Hillary Clinton have faced no end of right-wing vitriol. I grew up in Arkansas when her husband was elected governor and saw it for myself. I also saw it 20 years later when as national news editor at a daily newspaper I ran stories covering her as first lady.

But: Sexism is not the only issue that matters. It is one of your main issues, and it is important. But other issues are also important. What bothers me so much about your ongoing defense of yourself through Hillary Clinton is that you do not seem to care about anyone or anything else.

Please: Stop boomersplaining and start listening. Smug columns like the one you just published may be satisfying to write, but they do nothing to increase understanding or communication. They do not serve the public interest, or even the long-term interest of the Democratic Party.

One thing we do agree on is that there is a lot at stake. To the issues you list – women’s rights, racial justice, and health care – I would add destabilization of the environment unless we act quickly to address climate change. I believe Sanders is as strong or a stronger candidate in all these areas.

I am a lifelong Democrat, and in the general election I will vote for the Democratic nominee regardless of which candidate it is. We have only a short window of time to act on climate change, and if a climate change-denying Republican were to get into the White House, that would literally increase the chances of the extinction for most species on the planet, including humans.

But during the primary, I am going to work my heart out to elect Sanders. His candidacy has not been compromised by millions of dollars from fossil fuel, agribusiness, pharmaceutical, health insurance, and Wall Street corporations. No matter how admirable a person Hillary Clinton is, if she is elected president through their money, they are going to expect access if not votes.

The only people Sanders will owe if elected are the ordinary Americans who funded his campaign with 3.5 million donations (and counting) of $27 each. And those are the people who most deserve to be heard.

I have done what I pleased," HG Wells once wrote, "so that every bit of sexual impulse in me has expressed itself. I am a very immoral person. I have preyed on people who loved me."

This may shock readers who think of Wells as a science fiction guru, the author of such influential work as The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds.

Yet Wells was a man ahead of his time in more ways than one. Living in an age of sexual propriety, he had a fondness for extramarital affairs which, even to modern eyes, seems startling.

We will see a lot of Wells in 2016. Some 150 years after his birth and 70 years after his death, his work still resonates in popular culture.

But what was the man with such a vivid, tireless imagination really like?

Certainly he was always an oddity.

Born in 1866 to a lower-middle-class family, he rocketed out of his own narrow circumstances during an extraordinary four-year purple patch, when he published all of his most famous novels, starting with The Time Machine in 1895 and ending with The War of the Worlds in 1898.

The shopkeeper's son from Bromley found himself acclaimed as one of the most extraordinary minds of the age. His science fiction melded popular storytelling with a sharp eye for emerging scientific trends and set the template for a century of the genre.

Between then and his death in 1946, however, Wells also became one of the country's most successful and active writers and thinkers. He wrote more than 100 books of essays, world history and futurology.

And he predicted, among other inventions, nuclear weapons, mass surveillance, tanks and a worldwide web of knowledge that would allow students to "examine any book, any document" in their own homes.

He was equally forward-looking in his personal life. In an outwardly respectable Britain where careers could be ruined by rumours of promiscuity, Wells preached and practised the kind of "free love" that would not become acceptable for decades.

He had dreamed since adolescence, he later wrote, of encounters with "free, ambitious, self-reliant women who would mate with me and go their way", and, after a first marriage of sexual incompatibility, he set out to turn the dream into reality.

Many of these relationships edged dangerously close to public scandal.

When he attempted to flee to the Continent with Rosamund Bland, the daughter of his Fabian colleague Hubert Bland and the children's author E Nesbit, he received a duffing-up from her father at Paddington Station – though arguably Bland didn't have a leg to stand on, since Rosamund was in fact his illegitimate child by the housekeeper.

Another Fabian, Pember Reeves, is supposed to have staked out Wells's club with a loaded pistol after Wells absconded with his daughter Amber: the pair consummated their relationship, Wells later wrote, "before she went back to Cambridge for her examination for Part II of the Tripos".

But the man who later described himself as "the Don Juan of the intelligentsia" was soon busy elsewhere – not unknown to his second wife Jane, whom he claimed "had always regarded my sexual imaginativeness as a sort of constitutional disease" and who occasionally gave sanction to his dalliances.

Wells had affairs with the writer Violet Hunt, the model for Sylvia Tietjens in Ford Madox Ford's sequence of novels, Parade's End.

There was also Dorothy Richardson, who "would lecture me on philology and the lingering vestiges of my Cockney accent while there was not a stitch between us", and Martha Gellhorn (though the glamorous war correspondent always denied a sexual relationship).

With the novelist Elizabeth von Arnim, he enjoyed such energetic sex that they broke her hotel bed twice.

Other affairs were more durable.

Wells had a long entanglement with the writer Rebecca West, whom he met when he was in his mid-40s and she was 21. He also fathered a son during this relationship, the future writer Anthony West.

To Rebecca, Wells was known as Jaguar; to him she was Panther. "He smelt of walnuts," she later recalled, "and frisked like a nice animal."

In still later life, he became obsessively devoted to the mysterious Moura, Baroness Budberg, a Ukrainian adventuress and intimate of Lenin and Stalin who may well have been a Soviet double agent.

Among her other adventures, Budberg was for some years the lover of the diplomat and spy Robert Bruce Lockhart (supposedly the inspiration for James Bond).

It is plausible that she was reporting on her literary lover to the Russian authorities, who were fascinated by his socialist leanings, but she always ascribed Wells's attraction to the fact that his body smelt of honey.

'MORAL INDIGNATION IS JEALOUSY WITH A HALO'

Wells was never abashed by the rumours that swirled around his private life, contending that "sex is as necessary as fresh air" and that "moral indignation is jealousy with a halo".

Outside the bedroom, he was equally progressive.

He joined and abandoned the Fabian Society, judging its softly-softly approach to the socialist transformation of society too delicate.

He was a founder member of the National Council for Civil Liberties, now the civil rights group Liberty, and founded the Diabetic Association, which became the charity Diabetes UK.

His extensive writings on equality and human rights informed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations shortly after his death.

Against the backdrop of an Edwardian society that still believed that people should know their place and be bound by it, he often seems to resemble one of his own time travellers, beamed in from a more permissive future to alter the course of society.

"If the world does not please you, you can change it," he observed in his novel The History of Mr Polly. "Determine to alter it at any price, and you can change it altogether."___

Bombshell Poll Shows Bernie Sanders Winning The Hearts Of Democratic Voters
A new poll from Quinnipiac University shows that Bernie Sanders has virtually erased Hillary Clinton's national lead with Democratic voters. In the contest for the heart of the party, Sanders has swept Democrats off their feet.

According to Quinnipiac, “In the Democratic race nationwide, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has 44 percent, with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont at 42 percent, and 11 percent undecided. This compares to a 61 – 30 percent Clinton lead in a December 22 survey by the independent Quinnipiac University Poll.”

Use this as a springboard to help recruit new volunteers and fundraise, but remember the Polling Averages from different aggregates still have Bernie down by 13-17%:
538 has Clinton up by 16.8%  http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/election-2016/national-primary-polls/democratic/

Why this feminist won't be voting for Clinton
"One of the things that was said to me over and over again during my time in the service:  “You just have to be patient for these changes.  It doesn’t happen quickly.”  At that time, I thought that if we had a woman president, that at least it would become easier for women.  And then Margaret Thatcher proved that powerful women can be equally as stupid as powerful men.  We must consider a woman individually the same as we consider the individual man.  (Voting for a woman just because she is a woman is just as sexist as voting for a man just because he is a man.)"

Who else remembers the social spiders from Verner Vinge's Marooned In Real Time?

A Warrior Race OfJungle Spiders, Who Share A Hive Mind?

I found myself trudging along a muddy path in the Peruvian Amazon jungle, face to face with a spider colony several thousand strong.

Their funnel-shaped web arched from tree to tree, a structure containing too many of the creepy crawlies to count.

These were spiders but not as I knew them: they appeared to function as a society, just like ants or bees

Most spiders are indeed lone wolves, but a scant handful have evolved a level of sociality to rival ant colonies, bee hives, or even primate societies.

Anelosimus eximius, the species I encountered in the rainforest, is not the only kind of social spider in the world, but it does construct the biggest webs. Some can reach more than 25ft (7.6m) feet long and 5ft (1.5m) wide. A web that size could contain as many as 50,000 individual spiders.

That is a lot of legs, eyes and fangs.

A. eximius was first discovered more than a century ago by a French arachnologist named Eugène Simon.

More social spiders have been discovered since. One was found as recently as 2006, in Ecuador, by entomologist Leticia Avilés.

Sociality shows up in at least seven spider families.

In all we know of around 25 social species among the 45,000 described spider species on the planet. Sociality evolved at least a dozen separate times among them.

It's a classic smear job.

My Standard Reply whenever PF attacks Bernie unfairly like this:
Politifact has a pretty good track record of being mostly truthful, but Politifact is also guilty of artificially imposing a False Balance to appear not to be biased. They judge progressives far more harshly than conservatives. Politifact regularly gives partially true to false statements by conservatives and Republicans and partially true to true statements by progressives and Democrats.  For instance here with Bernie Sanders at http://www.politifact.com/personalities/bernie-s/statements/ they have rated the following True things as only partially true:

•99 percent of all new income today (is) going to the top 1 percent.
It IS True http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/28/upshot/gains-from-economic-recovery-still-limited-to-top-one-percent.html.  It is only partially true if you use selective data after taxes paid and before any public assistance programs.

•In this last election in November, ... 63 percent of the American people chose not to vote.
Just 36.4 percent of eligible voters turned out in 2014 http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/2014-midterm-election-turnout-lowest-in-70-years/

•From 2013-2015, the richest 14 Americans increased their net wealth by more than $157 billion, yet the Republican budget would not require these Americans to contribute one penny to deficit reduction.
Name one single tax increase the Republicans have proposed that would require the richest 14 people in America to pay one penny more.

•In 1952, the corporate income tax accounted for 33 percent of all federal tax revenue. Today, despite record-breaking profits, corporate taxes bring in less than 9 percent.
To be fair: The share of taxes paid by corporations fell from 30% in the 1950's to 6% today http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/25/business/economy/25tax.html So the numbers were 3 points off, but probably even worse than what Sanders stated.

•One out of four corporations doesn't pay a nickel in (federal income) taxes.
Actually one out of THREE: Two Thirds US Corporations pay nothing in federal income tax: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/most-companies-pay-no-federal-income-tax/

POLITIFACT rated the following things False, when they are actually at least partially true:
•Bernie Sanders says ExxonMobil paid no taxes in 2009
Exxon Mobile did pay nothing in US Federal Income Taxation for at least one year, along with G.E., Wells Fargo, Verizon, and many more big corporations: http://ctj.org/ctjreports/2011/06/twelve_corporations_pay_effective_tax_rate_of_negative_15_on_171_billion_in_profits_reap_624_billion.php

•Americans now work the longest hours of any people around the world
While that is admittedly not true, Americans do work more hours per year than most countries. 2013 data indicates we are the 11th worst on this list: http://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DatasetCode=ANHRS  We work 400 hours per year more than our friends in Germany.

•U.S. doubles every other country in per capita health spending
Again, while this is admittedly not true, the US does spend more than almost any country in the world on health care per capita according to the World Health Organization. http://gamapserver.who.int/gho/interactive_charts/health_financing/atlasi3.html?indicator=i3  We are slightly less than the expensive countries of Norway and Switzerland, and just ahead of tax shelters like Luxemborg and Monaco. Overall however, we spent $8900 per capita which is double the OECD average and many times the world average. Cuba for instance has health care quality on par with the US, but they only spent $558 dollars per capita.

•Texas Republicans want to abolish Social Security, V.A. health care
It’s right on the Texas Republican Party Platform to privatize both: http://www.tfn.org/site/DocServer/20...pdf?docID=3201  Turning strong public programs private IS abolishing them in their current form, regardless of what the privatized entity is called afterwards. Remember Republicans tried to put Social Security in the stock market under Bush too, which would have ended it. The same goes for the Republican quest to voucherize Medicare.

And now to demonstrate they go soft on conservatives, they also put a Mostly True label on a completely FALSE statement by the right wing "Tax Foundation" that claimed the US has the highest corporation tax rate in the world.  The EFFECTIVE corporate tax rate (what they really pay) is only about 12% http://money.cnn.com/2013/07/01/news/economy/corporate-tax-rate/

Sanders Exaggerates Inequality
http://www.factcheck.org/2015/05/sanders-exaggerates-inequality/
Factcheck rates Bernie’s claim that “in America we now have more income and wealth inequality than any other major country on earth” as an exaggeration. Their premise mostly comes from their definition of what the term “major country” means. Usually “major” means an OECD country that is typically considered “First World” and “Developed”. This can of course be subjective, as Russia is not in that group, nor is Brazil, while Turkey and Chile are.

The richest 10% own more wealth than the US in 6 countries (Russia, Turkey, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand). Out of those, only Turkey is an OECD country, and that definition is really nebulous as anyone that has ever been to Turkey can attest to.  Outside of Istanbul and Ankara Turkey is about as developed as Afghanistan.  When it comes to income inequality, there is more inequality in Chile and Turkey by the 2011 data: http://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=IDD  Another OECD report lists the US and Israel as the worst: http://www.oecd.org/social/in-it-together-why-less-inequality-benefits-all-9789264235120-en.htm

Everything here hinges on how one chooses to define “major country”, and considering the US has the worst wealth and income inequality in what most people would consider to be “major countries”, I think Factcheck.org is splitting hairs here. Even if they did have a point that Turkey or Russia could be considered “major” countries, the point Bernie Sanders was making is still true: America has dangerous levels of wealth and income inequality where the richest 1% are consuming 99% of the recovery.
