Thomas Hawk6,156,0612,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 4 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi.  Today's , part 4 of 5, today, represents Mi-Sh.  I'll share the last remaining circle tomorrow.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6f*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-04 15:53:284915966104CC G+

Curating Content on Google+0The new Pʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ ENGAGERS Cɪʀᴄʟᴇ is out!  A lot of new people from great participation last week!!Quick start instructions:➀ post a URL link to a G+ photo in the comments below,➁  check out some photos from others and +1 and comment on them,➂ publicly share this circle-post, from a new friend's stream (instead of ours)➃ add this circle, and refresh it every week. You will get a comment from us with a ☑ and be added (or stay in) the circle share next week!  Questions?  Ask in comments below - you'll get help!Full story: This circle is for meeting engaging G+ users about photography.  The interaction happens mainly in the comments, but of course re-shares too.  Post a link to a photo from your stream during the last week in the comments below.  It can be your photo or someone else's.  Then from the comments here, check out someone's link, and comment on / critique that photo.  Try to pick someone new each week, so you will meet new people and make new friends (more than 1 is ok too).  Re-sharing their circle-share helps them learn about Ripples! Results: your photos will get more exposure, you will be circled more, and you'll find active people to add to your stream.  Re-sharing this circle is highly recommended, and some form of engagement is mandatory.  That will result in a curated circle that's always fresh!  If you drop out for any reason, you can get back in at any time by adding content & engaging in the current weekly circle! This will be done every Thursday, starting fresh again.  It is for active G+'ers that want more interaction and exposure. This is a hybrid idea, taking the best parts of circle sharing, communities, and G+, and rolling them into one! Biggest Ripple last week: +Jürgen Keil with 5!  The runner up was +J.B. Churchill with 4.  Nice work to those that helped them!  The average share-chain (ripple) for the whole group was 2.52...  pretty good!!Top Influencers last week: +Sara Schiavi +Kenneth Scott +Trever McGhee and +Jürgen Keil.  Special thanks to you too! #publiccirclesproject #photography #sharedcircles #weeklythemecircles #sharingiscaring #greatp2013-03-07 15:52:124672556487CC G+

Thomas Hawk2,494,0652,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 4 of 4 (Ro-Z)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gPart 2 of 4 (Ev-La) here:  http://goo.gl/dX7lRPart 3 of 4 (La-Ro) here:  http://goo.gl/MP1Q2This is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the fourth circle and includes photographers with the last name's Ro-Z. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude beh2012-06-07 14:58:20499192218468CC G+

Jeff Sullivan41,837The Net Effect of Circle SharingAny time you have the release of such large circles totaling 1500 community members from one with over 880,000 contacts, there will probably be discussions on the pros and cons of circle sharing. At a high level, he added 22,000 contacts yesterday, but if even 500 of his contacts added the circles, 750,000 new connections were made in the community, more than he'll add in a month. I added 500 yesterday, and the 500 people not in his circle shares before probably added much more (so that's a highly conservative estimate). We could second-guess the process, but overall, the community is the beneficiary. Now clearly there are more people which should be recognized and included in circle shares, and many more topics than photography as well, so what I'd like to suggest is that others follow this example and similarly "pay it forward" to the community. Share your own circles, to continue and broaden the interconnection process within the community. Let's make tomorrow a #CircleSharingSunday !What do you think?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*+Thomas Hawk * - Yesterday 10:16 AM (edited) - Public*1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) *1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3) http://goo.gl/WGdFw1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (G-O, Part 2 of 3) http://goo.gl/1yiS61,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) http://goo.gl/6nLZEI've shared my photographers circle on Google+ two times now. Once when it got to 500 and then again when it got to 1,000. Today my circle hit 1,500 so I'm sharing them again.I have to break them up into 500 person circles because this is the limit on Google+. Also Google limits the number of people you can add to circles per day so I'm going to publish my kick ass photographers circle over 3 days. Today I'm publishing A-G. Tomorrow I'll publish G-O. Friday I'll publish P-Z. By last name.In addition to the kick ass photographers in these circles I've also added three other accounts. Our new photography hangout show which will be on live tonight at 8PM PST +Photo Talk Plus as well as our show's sponsors +Drobo and +SmugMug as a way of saying thanks to them.A few notes about these circles. not to be long-winded, but…Every time I've shared my circles I've gotten haters from it. People who are upset that they are not in them. I absolutely detest that. It makes me not even want to share them because of that. These circles are not meant to be the definitive list of what photographers you should be following on Google+. These circles are simply who I have chosen to follow for photography on Google+ for my own personal consumption. I want to share them because I think YOU may also benefit from having these rich, talented, kick ass photographers in your streams. This is the circle that I browse every single day looking for great stuff to +1 and comment on Google+ and as such it reflects my own personal biases. For example. I hate looking at watermarks. This is a personal preference thing. If you use them, more power to you. It's absolutely your right. But as a consumer of photography I find them ugly and distracting and so I tend not to follow people who use them. This is not a big deal. This is not a personal attack against you if you watermark. Lotus Carroll51,642Lotus Carroll's "Rockin' Photogs" Circle Share Time! I have over 1000 people in my "Photography" Circle (and I'm always adding more - in fact, I know I have more of you to add). Way too many to share! And I decided that a small share is better anyway - I'm vouching for a smaller, more intimate group you can count on.So I hand selected 250 of the people in my Photography Circle to share with all of you. These people inspire me and I find their various works to be amazing. Some I only know casually, many I know much more deeply. I feel all are worthy of following. I vetted every account here today, looking at it for quality and current updating. I took a lot of time to select these carefully for you.Let it be noted, though, that if you (or other amazing photogs) are not here, it does not mean I don't value you or your work. You may well be in my Photography Circle, and I check that regularly. But I only let myself select 250 for this share. Also note that I did not allow myself to share profiles of persons who are not uploading their photos here to G+, even if I know their work is fabulous elsewhere. I feel like I need to carefully recommend profiles to others that are actually producing great content here regularly.I hate bad feelings! I don't want this share to generate any. So I love you even if you are not here, okay? (Unless you're a dickhead. Obviously.)Lotus Carroll shared a circle with you.2011-09-28 22:46:4425014881155CC G+
Thomas Hawk141,162Let's try this again. Earlier this morning I shared my Kick Ass Photographers list. The list only included 250 of the 400+ people on this list and so I felt bad when people that were in this circle were left out. Circles were borked for me for part of this morning, but I think I have them working again and so I split this list into 2 organized by your first name. So if your first name starts with L-Z, you'll be in this list. If your first name starts with A-K you'll be in the other list.NOTE: I'm very unorganized and I just KNOW I've left some really good people off these circles and I'm sorry in advance. Especially if we're friends and know each other, please know it wasn't intentional, I'm just unorganized sometimes. Thanks!Thomas Hawk shared a circle with you.2011-09-27 20:42:18202413262CC G+

He's a great photographer and an all around great guy!) and +Thomas Hawk (Another awesome one, takes interesting but creative shots), and many more! Beautiful abstract art?

Rather this is a graphical representation of the frequency of four digit PIN codes. On the x-axes we have the first two PIN digits from 00.. to 99.., on the y-axes we have the last two digits from ..00 to ..99. Popular PIN codes include the yellow diagonal, PIN codes of the form XYXY, and even more bright XXXX. The vertical yellow line are PIN codes marking a year, mostly between the years 1930-2010. The yellow blob on the lower left are US formatted calendar days from 01/01 to 12/31 (you can even see how many days each month has). Also singleton yellow dots can be explained.

Anyway, it is beautiful, in my opinion.

Haha this is amazing: "While the folks behind Skullgirls Encore have decked out the aptly-named Big Band with a variety of instrument-based attacks, his Free Form medium punch in particular is interesting in that it’s capable of acting like a real trumpet should you chain it correctly. This obviously opens it up to all kinds of shenanigans outside of the competitive arena, and we were recently sent a video that highlights this perfectly." (See the video attached to this post, below...)

and then of course they went further, recording 8 simultaneous Big Bands to do a rendition of Leroy Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday" (if you're like me, you'll probably recognize the music even if you don't recognize the artistor... more »

Vernazza on the Rocks | Vernazza, Italy, Cinque Terre

Taking a break from my fashion and beauty shots, here is another one from my trip to Italy. Vernazza is no doubt one of the most beautiful towns in Cinque Terre and sunsets like this seem to be a daily occurrence.

This is a three image pano composed of three horizonal slices working upward. The foreground was focus stacked to keep things sharp from front to back.

Brew perfect beer with help from the @Raspberry_Pi

Linux Voice has this awesome tutorial up on making your home brew even better by adding in a Raspberry Pi. They write, “The BrewPi isn’t an easier way of making of making beer. It’s an easier way to make it perfect.” We’re sold!

Beer is lovely. But when you’re making it at home, the biggest challenge (after discovering a way to boil vast quantities of water) is always finding somewhere to leave your brew to ferment. It’s this stage of beer-making magic that turns what’s known as wort into beer, creating alcohol and oodles of flavour. And for this stage to work well, you ideally need to be able to manage the temperature of the environment your beer is sitting in. In the UK, many amateur brewers resort to using an ‘airing cupboard’, normally situated next to the hot water tank andused for drying clo... more »

The Power of a single RAW file

Here's the before-and-after of creating an HDR out of a single RAW file.  I used the Sony A7r just to expose for the guard of the mausoleum, and was hoping I could pull out a few details from the darkness...  boy did it ever.  These Sony RAW files are thick as thieves!

The final shot is a combination of a single-file HDR and pulling up the shadows and blacks from that same file in Lightroom.

360 Panorama: Cozumel, Mexico

This #photosphere  was captured by Christophe Bailhache at the Columbia Deep dive site in Cozumel, Mexico. Christophe says that he was so focussed on driving the SVII-S camera along the reef that he didn't notice the large turtle that you will see in this image until it was right next to him.

Click into this photosphere and look around this section of the Mesoamerican reef.

Raspberry Pi's making BIG savings in business...

We are now using around 20 pi's in our business, which is saving us at least $10,000 a year.

Yes, the humble Pi has gone mainstream.

How? We had a propriety music system for retail stores we were paying for - a monthly fee which covered our licencing and them providing updates to music and in store advertising.

Expensive (See savings!), slow - updates took a month minimum to arrive on CD to stores, and minimal control from the business - we could choose a genre of music, no more.

We now run Pi's in place. We still pay for licencing separately, but the music is updated to each Pi nightly based on the store type, and controlled by marketing. And the advertising messages? They update every 15 minutes, for rapid changes to the business and advertising. And all on stock Raspberry Pi's with a... more »

This is huge.  Google is finally able to publish information about the number and scope of the FISA (secret intelligence court) subpoenas received.  The takeaway:  it's massively fewer subpoenas and accounts involved than many people suspected.

There are caveats.  Google is required to delay reporting by six months and required to only report information in bands of 1,000.  But it's massively better than nothing.

The world, but especially US citizens, have a right to know what kind of surveillance their government is authorizing.  It has been cool to see companies like Google push for this kind of openness.  Reform is a long time coming and this is only the beginning.  Baby steps.
