Separated at birth
Paul and I are frequently mistaken for brothers due to our distinguished stature and Midlands good looks. We worked together when I first joined Google UK in 2010. 3 months later I was off to the US, but we always stayed in touch. This is he and I at a GDD. I count myself lucky to be compared to such a web hero (even if he is from Liverpool). We share a common interest in pies.

The Queen of Versailles
I came across this movie on Netflix the other night, which won the US Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. I highly recommend it as a movie that will hold your attention and provoke your thinking.

This one is truly amazing. The Wave Disk Generator uses 60 percent of its fuel for propulsion; standard car engines use just 15 percent. As a result, the generator is 3.5 times more fuel efficient than typical combustion engines.

The World War II codebreaking center at Bletchley Park played a crucial role in the Allied victory and helped kickstart the computing age. Today two new initiatives are bringing Bletchley Park's story to a wider audience.

First, you can now explore digital archives—including photos of the Bombe machines that helped crack the Enigma code, and of Colossus, the world's first programmable electronic computer—from the Bletchley Park Trust on the Google Cultural Institute site: http://goo.gl/Ao6ml

Second, we're sharing a film about the Bombe featuring one of its original operators, Jean Valentine. Women like Jean made up the majority of Bletchley Park’s personnel, working as cryptographers, machine operators, clerks and more. In this video Jean shows how the Bombe worked and talks about life at Bletchley Park during the war.

Google and Bletchley Park

We've announced two great initiatives with Bletchley Park today. First, we’re welcoming the Bletchley Park Trust as the latest partner to join Google’s Cultural Institute, and second we’re also excited to share a personal story of the Bombe, as told by one of its original operators, Jean Valentine.

Why convert to IPv6
What if the Internet ran out of room?
In fact, it's already happening.

+vint cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, and a founding father of the Internet, discusses the next version of the Internet, IPv6, and why we need it.

Finally went IPv6 on my home network
Tonight I finally enabled IPv6 on my home network with the help of my friend +Nigel Ellis - we've both got MikroTik routers which allow you to tinker a little more than the standard home router just enough to have fun.

I use Hurricane Electric's free IPv6 Tunnel Broker service.

One more convert +vint cerf !

The Cosmos: Macro versus Micro

☼ The images on the left are night views of brightly lit metropolitan cities taken from the International Space Station. On the right, are fluorescent images of neurons. Like a neuron, the city seems to have a cell body, branching dendrites and a main axon like highway extending out.

☼ The ancient Greeks of the Neo-Platonic school of philosophy saw  the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or sub-sub-atomic or even metaphysical-level). In their philosophy, Man is in the middle.

☼ Did you know that the word cosmos (Greek, κόσμος) means "order" and is the conceptual opposite of "chaos"? In Mandarin Chinese, cosmos and universe are both translated as 宇宙 yǔzhòu, whichmeans "space-... more »

Since North Korea has been in the news recently, here's a "news piece" about the infamous Pyongyang Traffic Girls.  It took me a while to tell whether it's a brilliant spoof or tragically bizarre propaganda.  (Hint: it's the former.)  But it's fun to watch and just plausible enough to be real Pyongyang propaganda.

PS: what's known for sure is that the traffic girls exist.  Never question that.

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
