Allan Cabrera17,799Attention New York, New Jersey, Philadephia, Delaware, Maryland and Washington DC photograhers......Named after the Lenni Lenape Indian word for slow-moving water, Pennypack Park stretches nine miles, following Pennypack Creek southeast as it runs from Montgomery Couty to the Delaware River. The park covers more than 1,300 acres. The landscape of this rambling city park covers rolling hills, open meadow and many miles of paved and unpaved trails that are great for hiking, biking, running and horseback riding. You’ll also find numerous historic buildings, including a working farm.I suggest going to the Pine Road entrance which is right across Fox Chase Farm. There's tons of parking. Wear your favorite hiking shoes. We will be hitting some single track and fire trails along the creek. Hydration pack and bottled water is also a must. I will be updating this event as we get close to the date. Autumn Photo Walk in the Woods2013-10-19 12:00:0026

Kelli Seeger Kim1,307,915It's +Karen Hutton 's birthday!  (okay, well - technically, it's September 7.  But +Kerry Murphy and I couldn't wait any longer!)Anyone familiar with Karen will attest to the fact that she is all about peoples' passions.  What drives them.  What's in their hearts.  What better gift to give to her, than to share with her images that we feel represent our passion/soul/heart!.  Images that truly represent who we feel we are now - or the journey we are on (or traveled), in search of personal growth.  Maybe you have an image of yours that represents a style of photography that you feel a deep connection with. Maybe you have an image that marked a moment in your life that was particularly incredible for you - that touched you in a way that is significant.  We can have a lot of fun with this theme - the most important thing is that it comes from our heart.  :-)So feel free to upload images to this event, and tag them:   #SharingOurLightWithKarenHutton  Sharing Our Light With Karen Hutton (Happy Birthday, Karen!)2012-09-07 13:00:0058

It's a part of The Public Theater (think Shakespeare In The Park).Adele, Bono, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, and many more have sung from its stage...And now we're taking that stage together with a giant on-stage Hangout! It'll be the first live-interactive global show in the venue's storied history. Lotus Carroll1,772,547I'm here in the big city, baby! There is something about this place that just makes me restless… it's like that living pulse that seems to throb through the streets just gets inside of you and doesn't stop. I love it! So, while I'm not sleeping much and sucking up everything I can, I figured I couldn't let my visit go by without a photowalk, and some of my local (super awesome) friends agreed. I know this is last minute notice, but sometimes that's just how it goes. So grab your cameras/phones and join me along with +Titus Winters, +Alan Shapiro, & +Vivienne Gucwa as we enjoy one another's company while doing what we love and do best. :)We'll meet at the High Line entrance on 16th at 5:15 and start walking at about 5:30. Rain gear optional. See you all there! :DNYC Photowalk with Lotus & Friends2012-07-31 17:15:0026

If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to August 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting July 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Charles Lupica83,296═════════════════════════════════     Top Photographers you should follow                 An Art of Photography Circle  Photographers whose art we think will amaze you ═════════════════════════════════#ArtOfPhotographyCircle tag to allow people to easily mute this post. It's been a while since I shared a circle here on G+ so I thought I would team up with +Scott Thomas and +Brian Dukes to share with you the first new circle I've created in more than a year.  We think you'll find that the photographers in this circle are some of the very best that G+ has to offer.  Of course you're probably already following people like Jeff Sullivan , Lori Hibbett, Jay Patel and  Vivienne Gucwa but we think that all of the people in this circle will add high quality content to your stream.  All share their amazing work and many of them share tutorials and resources to help you perfect your art. When deciding who would be in this circle, we used these guidelines• Sharing mostly their own work• When sharing the work of others, the work is clearly identified• Little to no, promotional material. • Some people are included that share a lot about technique but may not share a lot of their photography.• If they have gifs in their stream, they're almost always educational. • The images shared by these people frequently fall into the category of, "I wish I'd taken it" • They post to G+ on a regular basis,  For some this may be a little as once a month.  For others, this may be one or more a day.  People who post less than once a month are not included.  We prefer to circle people that are active here on G+. No one has asked to be in this circle, however, we intend to share a version of this each month.  *If you know of a talented photographer you'd like us to add*, please leave a comment and share the circle.  Doing so will get us to look at their profile. However, there is no guarantee that we'll include them in a future circle.   We want to maintain the quality of this circle.  Therefore, we will only add photographers that we would want to see in our own personal stream. Many of the photographers in this circle are well known so we are particularly interested in hearing your choice of photographers with fewer than 15'000 followers.  We would like to give them the opportunity to gain more views for their work. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the quality of the work by the photographers in it.  ValidationThis circle was very heavily vetted.  We have looked at each photographer's stream and decide that we would like to include them in this circle. +Charles Lupica (me), +Scott Thomas and +2014-06-27 17:39:05116935056

Gailen Mapes65,436Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera  F-H - 25 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to June 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting May 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-06-25 03:33:57186405

Mario Rotta15,308This is a circle in which I included a lot of excellent photographers: but most of them start from pictures to create visual design effects. So, this circle may represent a list of people working on the edge between photography and art. I like that experimental edge :-)2014-05-22 06:00:41400016

Paris - Eiffel Tower

I have been going through my photos from Paris. It's interesting how time colors memory, no?

I took this self-portrait with my Sony A7 from the balcony of my room at Shangri-La Paris Hotel. This was, hands down, one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower I have ever had the pleasure of savoring. It almost seemed completely unreal.

Cannot wait to do a huge photo-set and post about my experience there. It will be a rather epic post, that's for sure! Will probably post about it early next week.

Autumn in New York City (a look back: info below)

Today was an absolutely perfect autumn day. The air was crisp, the sun exuded a cool warmth, and the sunlight pierced the pavement.

This time of year always makes me incredibly nostalgic. It was the autumn of 2009 that I found my passion for photography. I would walk as far as my legs would take me with my little point and shoot camera which was severely limited in its capacity. I was too poor for a smartphone at the time and remember hoping that the no-frills point and shoot that I bought on sale for $79 could help me capture the city I love in photographs.

These photos accompany a post with TONS of New York City autumn photos (and I mean TONS) here:

---

I went through quite a few of those early photos today for a client who found one of the photos on my Flickr account. I keep all of my work on my Flickr account, even the early work. It's amazing how far some of those early photos have gone. Not all of my early work is what I would consider good. In fact, most of my early work is rough in terms of execution of what I was attempting to do with the limited tools I had at the time.

It's important to keep a record of where we have been in life. It helps to put everything in perspective. Most importantly, it helps to track growth and learning.

I wanted to share a few of my photos from that magical autumn of 2009,

I can still feel every aspect of each moment I captured with my camera when I look at these...

New York City and Travel Photography - Vivienne Gucwa (Interview details below...)

I was interviewed by Jordan Oram for the travel site Wandering Educators. I am honored to have been chosen to be September’s Photographer of the Month there. Much gratitude to the team there!

I don’t often get a chance to talk about my New York City photography and my travel photography at the same time. So, this was a nice change of pace and I was more than happy to answer Jordan’s questions.

Read the full interview (link to actual site as well) with tons of photos over here:

Martinique - The French Caribbean

Everybody has a magical place or a series of magical places that they conjure up on the backs of their eyelids before going to sleep. The images linger in a never-ending slideshow revealing locales that symbolize a bevy of hopes and desires.

Travel is one of the instances in life where you get to visit the locations you have conjured up for years, the locations that help you get through the worst of times.

And that's one of the many reasons that travel is such a life-altering experience.

Traveling to Martinique this year was the first time in my life I had ever stepped foot into a world that so closely resembled the place I had imagined as I drifted off to sleep.

I spent a week on the island of Martinique and this photo-set and subsequent post will barely touch the surface of everything I experienced.

Martinique is an island in the Caribbean Sea that is located north of Saint Lucia, northwest of Barbados, and south of Dominica. It's one France's overseas regions and is home to around 380,000 inhabitants. Because it is a region of France, the official language of the island is French although many of the inhabitants speak Antillean Creole.

By the time I stayed at the Royal Monceau, I had been traveling in France for nearly three weeks at the tail-end of an adventure that took me through the south of France and up to Paris. I was a bit saucer-eyed and woozy from travel and travel photography. However, Royal Monceau made it impossible for me not to completely unwind and have my own smile-worthy adventure within its walls as I discovered the whimsical genius of Starck and grew to appreciate the Royal Monceau's high standards of excellence.

New York City Skyline and Chrysler Building

I have always been partial to late summer skyline views here in New York City.

The haze that hangs over the horizon like a misty veil seems to lend a special sort of immediacy to the skyscrapers that assert themselves in the foreground.

The Chrysler Building, New York City’s art-deco masterpiece of architecture, always looks so regal positioned in front of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge (also known as the 59th Street Bridge). Four smokestacks playfully draw the eye towards the rest of Queens that sprawls out in the distance towards the fading horizon.

It’s as if the sky is locked in an embrace with the rest of the city while the skyscrapers that make up the midtown Manhattan skyline are enraptured and wrapped up in their own special moment with the Chrysler Building.

Paris - Le Royal Monceau Hotel

Here is a little teaser from Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris where I had the pleasure of staying as a guest of the hotel itself when I was in Paris recently. The interiors are intricately and whimsically designed by Philippe Starck and I fell in love with them during my stay.

New York City - Sunset over the Brooklyn Bridge

Those were

the sunsets,

the ones

where the city

held the sun

in its palms,

holding on to

summer's warmth

for as long as it could;

cupped palms

full of light,

and promise

of days

without end

and nights

that barely

dreamed

of autumn.

*Taken on a boat with my Sony A7 while balancing on sea-legs as the boat whizzed past the New York City skyline at sunset, an experience I highly recommend.

New York City - 1 WTC at Sunset

There are some nights so magical and special, so all-encompassing in their scope that it feels impossible to relay their magnitude.

Last night was one of them.

This is one of the photos I took last night as I watched one of the most stunning sunsets paint itself across the sky from a terrace on the top of 4 World Trade Center.

I was up there to take night photos of 1 World Trade Center and hadn't even seen the sky until I made it up to the 57th floor unfinished terrace. For a few seconds, it scarcely seemed real, as if the giant hand of an artist had crafted a colorful composite to serve as a background for the majestic 1 World Trade Center.

For a few seconds, it scarcely seemed real, as if the giant hand of an artist had crafted a colorful composite to serve as a background for the majestic 1 World Trade Center.

When I was asked to take photos to accompany an upcoming article about the World Trade Center for the Guardian, I was honored and also a bit curious about how I would feel photographing such an iconic symbol of strength built upon the hallowed, sacred ground of loss, and despair.

I have written about September 11th a few times on my blog usually accompanying photo-sets that remain a  bit too emotional for me to view to this day. Since 2001, the site has largely remained a solemn place of reflection for me and many New Yorkers.

Touring the site initially a few weeks ago was a cathartic experience in retrospect. What once felt like a deep abyss of despair has been partially transformed into a powerful site of strength demonstrating New York City's tenacity and ability to regrow while also carefully dwelling in deep remembrance.

And so,  last night I stood high up on a terrace of 4 World Trade Center looking out towards 1 World Trade Center which rose up in front of me like a phoenix as the sun spilled across the sky, and I smiled with happy tears in my eyes.

* This is an 8 second long exposure taken with my Sony A7R.

New York City - Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and Skyline (and my family history)

It’s hard for me not to get emotional when I view New York City from certain vantage points. As the child of immigrant to the United States, I have always carried with me the weight of what these views represent.

My mother was born in Poland right before the start of World War II. The war hit Poland hard with most of its population sent off to concentration camps. Her family was split up due to a transgression involving my grandfather and a loaf of bread (or a pig, there are a host of different tales surrounding this moment in time).

My grandfather ended up in a concentration camp and my grandmother and her two daughters ended up in a labor camp. The family spent a few years enduring torture and horrific circumstances in a variety of camps.

When the war was about to end, my grandfather heard a rumor that his concentration camp would be burned to the ground in a matter of weeks and with what I can only imagine to be no less than steel resolve, he and a couple of the other men in the camp spent a few weeks digging a hole under a fence in the camp to escape the camp.

I have played the tales I was told tearfully throughout the years over and over in my mind and it’s still hard for me to imagine the feeling that my grandfather must have felt when he came across the American Red Cross who must have seemed like a fantastical beacon of hope after years of what he had just endured.

The American Red Cross gave him a bicycle and a rough idea of where the rest of the remaining labor camps were. Severely malnourished and skeletal, he took what little energy he had left and rode that bicycle through the scattered remnants of camps clinging to the hope that he would find my grandmother.

And he did.

What are the chances of something like that?

I don’t know.

But I do know that my grandfather’s next steps were to use his former ties as a merchant marine to secure a way for the family to make it to the United States. It took a lot of negotiation but he was able to move my grandmother, my mother, and her sister to Detroit where many Eastern European war survivors were moving.

And so my mother, malnourished and traumatized at the tender age of 9 years old, started her life over in the United States in a community that did everything in their power to lavish food and love on those who made it out of the horrors of World War II into the open arms of the promised land of mid-twentieth century America.

She spent her teenage years watching Hollywood musicals* and longing for life in the Big Apple where anything seemed possible. And so, after she fell head over heels in love with my father at the tender age of 19 years old, they married and took the paltry amount of money they had and moved to New York City without looking back.

—-

We would visit my Uncle Dan in Brooklyn Heights when I was little. He was an eccentric, larger-than-life figure who painted impressionist-style paintings of the Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfront since he had a near perfect view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

And I would run to the window in his office when we visited, careful to not knock over his easel, and stare at the Brooklyn Bridge with saucer-like eyes.

My mother would come over and hold my hand. Her eyes would well-up with tears and we would stand there silently.

I knew that this view meant the world to her.

And it meant the world to me because I knew that just to be in front of the amalgam of her teenage desires, standing there years after everything she went through during the war, anything was possible for me,

in this city of dreams.

—-

Taken yesterday from the 72nd floor of 4 World Trade Center with the A7. It’s a view of the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Manhattan, and Brooklyn from above.

—-

*It’s my mother I have to thank for my steady diet of musicals growing up. In fact, my first passive NYC geography lesson was gleaned from the musical On the Town when Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin sing: ” New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town. The Bronx is up but the Battery’s down”, part of a fabulously absurd yet fantastic musical sequence accompanied by great views of 1940s New York City.

New York City - 1 WTC and 4 WTC (and me!) (info below)

——-

I had the pleasure of getting a tour of the currently unfinished 4 World Trade Center (4 WTC) earlier with one of the site’s architects. It was for an upcoming gallery piece I am shooting for a piece in the Guardian. I will, of course, share more details about it in a few weeks.

What an honor. This is a photo I took with the Sony A7 of 1 WTC reflected in the glass of 4 WTC from the 57th floor terrace of 4 WTC. For scale, if you squint really hard you can see little ol’ me taking the photo. :)

Can’t wait to share more about this project soon!

New York City - Dusk - Lower East Side

The in-betweens:

the dusks, twilights,

the city comes alive;

tiny moments

New York City at Night

There is nothing like night in New York City.

It's in the way the lights shine, diffracted and star-shaped.

It's in the way the buildings glisten like lighthouses for the lost and found.

And it's in the way the chatter of taxi cabs and cars whiz past the ears like a never-ending dissonant lullaby.

The energy never changes.

It's as if it is impossible for the city's energy to change and shift.

As if that frenetic energy that propels us forward through the night was there all along,

and the city sprung up around it with open arms,

a long-lost lover looking for its muse.

Taken on Orchard Street a few nights ago with the Sony A7S as I walked along the streets pondering life and love.

Martinique - The French Caribbean...

Took a tiny break from editing New York City and South of France photos to go through my photos from Martinique. What a gorgeous place!

This is just a teaser. I will be making a larger photo-set post of Martinique photography in the next few days.

Loved walking along those beaches!

If you have any questions about Martinique, feel free to ask and then perhaps I will address them in my upcoming post. Before I went to Martinique a few months ago, I knew very little about it so I am sure others have questions .

New York City at night - Shooting with a camera that can see in the dark: the Sony A7S (Video shot at 40,000 ISO - Read below for info)

It’s no secret that I absolutely love photographing New York City at night.

City nights create a huge spark in my imagination recalling all of the night sequences in the history of cinema. My love of night shooting is also aided along by the fact that I don’t necessarily enjoy shooting the city during the daytime since I have extreme sensitivity to sunlight. And so, I spend a lot of time walking through the neighborhoods of New York City during the late hours of the night and wee hours of the morning. I would say that I spend more time out in the streets of NYC with my cameras more than I do during the daytime.

And so, I spend a lot of time walking through the neighborhoods of New York City during the late hours of the night and wee hours of the morning. I would say that I spend more time out in the streets of NYC with my cameras more than I do during the daytime.

A little background about gear:

I have been posting my photography online ever since I first knew I was falling hard for photography. It’s interesting to look back at posts and articles wrote a few years back opining on the exact moment I knew I was in love with photography. Many of my early posts about photography discussed how being limited with my gear early on helped me to learn about light and work within the constraints of my gear.

I grew up in Queens in a family that skirted the line between lower middle class and just slightly below. We made the most of what we had. When I was 17 years old, due to circumstances that I will write about one day, I moved out on my own in New York City as the rest of my family moved 2500 miles out west. With this context in mind, I think that starting out with limited gear in photography wasn’t so much a stretch for me since I had a long pattern of trying to make the most limiting of situations work to my advantage in life.

When I finally had a little money and knew I wanted to upgrade my camera, I chose Sony based on trusted advice from a good friend. I never regretted that choice. And as I moved up with my gear choices due to an eventual partnership with Sony and then, most recently, being chosen to be one of 10 contracted Sony professional photographers, I have had the chance to experiment quite a bit with some of the most innovative cameras in the world.

I never forget where I came from though. I always feel fortunate that I can do what I do now as a career and while I am no longer as limited as I was when I started out with my $79 point-and-shoot camera, I think a lot about what I am able to do now with photography in contrast to what I was unable to do back in those early days. I think that remembering the limitations helps me to appreciate how much I am currently able to make my visual dreams a reality.

My theory about camera gear:

I felt it was necessary to include the above before I start to talk about the Sony A7S. Context is everything. Sony doesn’t ask me to make posts about the cameras I use. If I enjoy the experience I have with a camera and love what I create with a camera, I will write and post about the experience. I never feel pressured to create content for the sake of creating content. I love photographing my travel adventures and my New York City adventures and if I come across gear that wows me, it’s hard not to share how I feel about said gear.

It's as simple as this: camera gear allows me to test the limits of my imagination and vision.

Photographers are dream catchers and moment collectors and anything that lets me catch my dreams and collect the moments that make my heart sing to the best of my ability is going to be something I want to share.

Seeing in the dark:

Right before I attended the American Museum of Natural History’s first adult sleepover, I was sent the A7S. It’s an unusual camera in the current camera gearscape. The Sony A7S has the unrivaled ability to shoot up to 409,600 ISO, a fact which looks completely ludicrous when you first read that number. While I was at the museum sleepover, I was completely blown away by the fact that I was shooting in extremely low light at 25,000 ISO and ending up with images that had little to no visibly aggravating noise.

This past weekend, I decided to take the camera with me and my friend Spencer as we wandered around the Lower East Side. Spencer is one of the most talented guitarists I know and when we hang out in the summer, he usually brings his guitar to play outside, so I figured I would try to record his playing on the streets of NYC late at night when the light wasn’t so great. While I love taking photos at night, I have felt limited in the past when it comes to areas of the city that aren’t well lit.

Video’s allure:

Anyone who has talked extensively with me over the last few months knows how much I am obsessed with exploring video in terms of creating new media. I have always viewed life as if it is a cinematic sequence. Even as a child, I imagined that every action was a frame in a never-ending film that I am directing. Photography is my way of capturing stills from that never-ending film and exploring shooting video is my way of capturing the sequences as they happen.

Some statements about this video:

1. I have almost no experience shooting video currently. I am still waiting to get a great directional shotgun microphone for my camera, in fact. This is one of the first videos I have shot that I was ok with posting online because I am blown away by the image quality (and I love his guitar playing).

2.I shot this video handheld as an MP4 (I hadn’t changed the record settings yet.). There is quite a bit of city noise and my focus was on capturing his playing against that great backdrop.

And so, this was the result of my spur-of-the moment recording.

….Keep in my that this was recorded at 40,000 ISO!

40,000!

It was 1:00 in the morning and we were sitting in a low-lit section of Orchard Street on the Lower East Side. I didn’t edit this at all aside from passing it through a noise filter in Premiere to lessen the city noise (minimally). The video does look a bit compressed due to upload to YouTube but other than that, it’s hard for me even to fathom that I was able to record at such a high ISO with no issue. I could have pumped it higher as well but then I would have run into over-exposure issues.

The photo that accompanies this post was shot at 32,000 ISO on Clinton Street the next night. You can view it larger here if you wish: New York City - Night - Lower East Side - Clinton Street.

As I mentioned in my museum sleepover photo-set, when I got my first Sony camera (the A55), anything past 800 ISO was unusable due to noise. And when I shot most of my New York Snow photos, it was with the A99 at 4000 ISO which (for me) was the limit for that camera. So, 20,000 ISO and 40,000 ISO just seems like a dream!

Getting back to the beginning of this post, as an avid night shooter who prefers night photography over daytime photography, the implications that this camera has on my own photography is huge since I no longer feel as limited as I can’t wait to do more night photography and video (I have a video project in the works currently, will tell more about it in due time) and capture the moments and sequences that make my heart sing.

And that makes me incredibly happy.

I am legitimately sad about Robin Williams. He was responsible for some of my favorite dialogue and scenes of all time in one of my favorite films: Dead Poet's Society.

That film and those scenes inspired me more than anything I can adequately describe especially when it comes to my writing and photography.

This scene especially that I am linking to:

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.

Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.

That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.

What will your verse be?"

So perfectly delivered and so incredibly inspirational. It was one of his best roles in my humble opinion.

It was also the first night that I used the Sony A7S. I knew that the low-light capabilities would be exceptional but it was so strange to be able to crank the ISO all the way up without dealing with tons of noise. In fact, in retrospect, I held back a little too much at times!

New York City Photography Collection (and a bit about my photography style):

About my photography style:

Every one in a while I get questions about my style and my focus (or I get trolled about it which is less nice to deal with, of course). Here is what I am interested in exploring with my photography which may shed light on my style.

I am focused on distilling the essence of locations around the world into distinctive visual remnants that resonate in a variety of ways.

Endlessly haunted by a sense of saudade and sehnsucht: a deep longing for a place that is unidentifiable but somehow familiar and indicative of what could be identified as home, I am on a never-ending quest to attempt to imbue my photography of cities and landscapes with this complex notion of nostalgic longing.

I am fascinated and interested in exploring how tones can produce feelings of  different forms of nostalgia and how color influences memory and desire.

Most of my photography is heavily influenced by cinema, music, and other art forms as I have a background in fine art (painting and art history).

And since a few people have asked across social media and via email, I figured I would share the link again. My NYC photography collection can be found here (all for sale as prints):

New York City Skyline

Late afternoon light is a ghost.

It grazes eyelashes

Dinosaurs at night - Museum of Natural History - New York City

Attended the first ever sleepover at the +American Museum of Natural History for adults only last night.

I got to explore the museum at night with many of the rooms lit in a special way and empty.

This is one of the main entrance rooms to the museum. It's usually FULL of people. I was the only one in it when I took this photo. What an absolutely epic experience. It's one of my favorite rooms in the museum.

New York City: Night

At night

the city stars

shine like supernovas

in a vast

urban universe.

And in the hours

just before midnight

during muffled increments

of time

when the city’s heart

palpitates in time

to the distant lullaby

of the day’s remains

dreams sleepwalk

their way

through the

alleys and streets.

—-

New York City doesn’t have many alleys. This is an alley in lower Manhattan. This was taken on a quiet night with my Sony A99.

I love the moments that occur when night falls and dreams roam the streets.

Times Square in the Snow - New York City (some updates about my book too!)

I wanted to sincerely thank everyone for such an incredible outpouring of love regarding my New York City coffee table book: NY Through The Lens. I, honestly, was gob-smacked this past weekend  when responding to the comments on my various posts about the book on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Tumblr and Instagram. I feel so spoiled by all of you! Seriously.

I think a lot about a passage written by E.M. Forster that really resonated with me back when I was a budding Literary Criticism & Theory major:

Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon.
Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted,
And human love will be seen at its height.
Live in fragments no longer.
Only connect...

 - E.M. Forster, Howards End

Forster's characters are constantly plagued by dilemmas that stunt true connection despite the positive implications of the phrase. While Forster's usage of the phrase has different meanings colored by the context of the era he was writing about, I have always thought about the phrase in the context of sharing pieces of ourselves in an era of surface sharing on the internet. We share a lot in the hopes of some sort of connection but actual connections seem mired in ambiguity and pretense.

When I started to share my (often) emotional writing and photography, I felt incredibly vulnerable (I still do, to be honest). But every time I get an email or message or comment that indicates that someone else felt the feelings I described in my writing or conveyed with my photography, it's one of the most beautiful feelings.

I still close my eyes and click or tap on the Submit button on my blog sometimes because what I write and what I convey with my photography is so intensely personal. But it all feels worthwhile during life moments like this one.

So, thank you for that.

Updated info about the book:

I updated my blog post that contains pre-sale links with some edits to answers and updated questions:

http://nythroughthelens.com/post/92873566010/ny-through-the-lens-the-book-i-am-super

Updates include:

1 - The page counts are actually the same for the paperback version and the hardcover version. It's an Amazon foible that has them listed differently. It will be corrected soon.

2 - There are updated links for the UK version of the book as well as a separate link for those who live in Australia as Booktopia Australia has the book listed which will cut down on shipping costs for those down under!

3 - I have also answered the number one question I received about purchasing the book in other parts of Europe and Asia:

Answer: Here is the low-down on the book’s release. It is available in the English language on Amazon throughout most of Europe (and parts of Asia).

If you go to your country’s Amazon and search for: NY Through The Lens, my book will show up. This is your own country’s option for purchasing the book. Just remember that the shipping will be local and the currency will be friendly to where you live but the book will be in English.

Hope this helps!

Again, if you missed the flurry of announcements and are totally lost right now. Here is the original announcement about the book along with TONS of info, photos, and answers to questions:

http://nythroughthelens.com/post/92873566010/ny-through-the-lens-the-book-i-am-super

Much love,

V.

P.S. - I will get back to my posting about my South of France, Paris, and Martinique adventures soon! We left off in Nice. I didn't forget ;). Also, newer NYC photography! I have some exciting NYC adventures coming up.

After I finished giving my very first presentation, I was approached by a representative from publishing firm who had listened to me speak. They were moved by my presentation and wanted to know if I had ever entertained the idea of a publishing a book of my New York City photography and asked to meet with me formally. We had a (stellar) meeting later that weekend and it also just happened to be the real deal, a traditional book deal.

A book has always been a goal but I was unhappy with the self-publishing model for a variety of reasons. So, I am grateful to have had this incredible opportunity.

Nice, France  (a few words about my journey...)

I have been slowly going through my photos from South of France which has proven to be a gargantuan task considering the sheer amount of content that I ended up with from each city I visited.

I plan on posting quite a few photo-sets from each city as well as separate in-depth photo posts highlighting some of the unique aspects of each place. And, of course, I will also do the same for Paris since I ended up spending 10 days in Paris after the South of France journey was over.

While I was in France, I posted quite a few photos in-the-moment and I typically did that with my cameras (I brought along my Sony corral which included the: A6000, A7R, and A7) by uploading the photos from the camera directly to my phone where I did super-quick edits of them using iOS photo-apps before posting them across social media.

This photo means a lot to me.

It was taken on the first evening that I was in Nice.

The light was light I dreamed about when I was younger and would bury my head in books about far-off sun-drenched locations.

I didn’t grow up in a family that traveled since my family didn’t have the means to travel. My father worked nights as a pressman for the Daily News, a fact which I was ashamed of when I was in grade school since it seemed like most of my peers had parents who had glamorous white-collar jobs which afforded them the means to travel. It took my parents 10 years to save up enough money to take a 2 week European vacation back in the 1990s without feeling intense guilt about allocating those funds for something other than necessities.

And so, when I travel, I always get a bit emotional along the way (that’s a bit of an understatement). My eyes well-up when I think of how much I yearned to be able to experience travel when I was younger. And while travel is part of my career in photography, it’s still constantly amazing to me that I even get the opportunity to do what I do.

I posted another version of this photo a month ago on the evening when it was taken. I stood there in Vieux Nice with the other journalists who were traveling with me and we all took turns admiring the light and capturing it with our cameras.

I insisted we all do that because I knew this was the light that people dream about.

It’s the kind of light that keeps you going even in your darkest hours when you are trying to claw your way into the life you have always wanted to live.

And it’s the kind of light that just knowing it exists in reality is enough to keep the dreams alive.

There is something so magical about dusk in New York City.

After the sun sets for the evening, the city is a symphony of lights reaching their crescendo at the same time as the night pulls itself over the rooftops and skyscrapers below.

And if you squint just a little,

all of the lights twinkle

like fireflies in an urban forest.

This is a 15 second exposure that I took with my Sony A99 while standing on the roof of Z Hotel in Long Island City, Queens. The rooftops of Long Island City sit in the foreground. To the right is the Queensboro Bridge (also known as the 59th Street Bridge, and the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge). The skyline of midtown Manhattan including the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building sit in the distance.
