Things You May Not but Probably Should Want to Know

While many people are aware that a person named Edward Snowden exists, and that he leaked something about the NSA to the public, I don't think many people know the details of what was leaked and why it is a big deal.

The TPP Could Ruin the Internet and That's Why Millennials Care

A new international trade partnership is threatening the internet this time. Not just the internet, but also modern medicine, and things that probably should not be threatened. Here's the short list:

1. Your ISP could become the police;
2. Video Streaming could become illegal
3. Medical costs could sky rocket

Practice Your Farts

After reading a www.cracked.com article, I was introduced to this hilariously flatulent game. The point is to fart without being detected by the dude standing next to you, and you mask the fart noises with the sound of passing traffic. Here's the link to play. Enjoy!

This Guy Is a Modern Day Superhero

While he was technically breaking the law and FCC regulations by using a cell phone jammer, he probably also prevented motor vehicle accidents. He probably also prevented thousands of incidents of road rage. I can't count the number of times I have screamed through closed windows at some dumb cellphone-yapping  lane-swerving trixie in my driving days.  Instead of building a cell phone jammer, I just gave up driving entirely.

Pictures Say Millions of Unsayables

The articles that will rehash 2013 and clog up the internet are upon us, but this one is pretty good. Not because it is a rehash 2013 article, but because the images contained within are both terrifying and hopeful. Terrifying because they depict the power that government can impose, but hopeful because some images depict the power that the people actually hold. Take a look.

Wal-Mart Is a Good Company, and You Should Shop There

A few days ago, I posted about how Wal-Mart was ruining Thanksgiving, but I may have been hasty in passing judgment. I just stumbled upon this article about how one Wal-Mart is allowing a food drive to take place to support its own associates.

I stand corrected, Wal-Mart, and I am glad to know that while you are requiring employees to work on Thanksgiving, at least you are kind enough to hold a food drive for items that your associates can heat up in the microwave after their depressing shift away from their families.

Bravo.

War on Drugs, War on Terror, War on America

Whoever thought it was a good idea to escalate and finance the arming of police officers into domestic soldiers should be arrested by the cops he armed.

This piece in Salon nicely examines the escalation of the police-state and the militarization of police forces starting with the war on drugs and escalating after 9/11.

It makes me nervous.

Giving is Taking When All Things Are Considered

I hate Christmas. I don't hate the decorations or getting together with family or drinking spiked cider or nog. I hate the spending and wasteful consumption that ruins lives.

This year, big box stores are opening on Thanksgiving at 6 p.m., and are apparently trying to out-douche themselves in comparison to last year. This, of course, is done in the name of the holiday profit spirit.

It is particularly offensive that not only do these companies think it is okay to make their employees work on Thanksgiving, but also that they can ruin my Thanksgiving by starting shopping season 20 minutes after dinner starts.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and fuck you Wal-Mart for trying to ruin it.

Church Might Be the Wrong Label

There's nothing wrong with having a community of like-minded people, but these mega-churches don't make much sense. How does one have a church if one does not have a god?  This movement seems to take something non-religious and turn it into a religion. This is sure to cause confusion in the public eye regarding atheism.

While the need for organization to combat the poison of religion is necessary, I am not sure that adopting the form and format of religion to create like-minded communities is the correct tactic. It smacks of the early Catholic Church which usurped the local rituals and customs to convert local populations to Catholicism.

I understand that when one gives up a belief in god and gives up going to church one may feel a void in their life. This movement seems to create something that fills that void. My issue with it is why does there need to be a new institution? Why must people give structure to non-belief? Why must we congregate? Is it to validate our choice to be "good without god"?  If that is the case, then this movement is stupid. It is nothing more than a movement to form self-congratulatory we're-better-than-you-a-thons that are no less obnoxious than the New-Atheist who evangelizes on social media.

I know how obnoxious those New-Atheists are. I used to be one. ___

The Darkness Becomes Light

Writing is happening again, and I say that it is happening because it seems to creep up out of my subconscious when the world beats down and stands on my neck. As lights blink out one by one, I stay up late and write frantically, almost with rage. I dive into my self and pull demons from dark corners, transform them into words on a digital page. They fight back and are ugly, but after the rage abates, and the night passes, the sun shines on them and they become beautiful. Writing is real life demon-slaying, and I am a superhero.

Big Brother

I wasn't sure if this was a real thing, but then I realized it had only passed in the House. I haven't done any follow up research yet, but I will. Essentially the bill gives employers the right to ask for passwords to social media sites, but an employee has a right to refuse. What employee is going to refuse? I don't think it matters whether a right of refusal is codifed when most employees are only worried about feeding themselves and their families. What do you think?

Sigh. Elizabeth Warren Embarrasses Some Bank Regulators To Their Faces. Again.

If you are a bank regulator, it might be a good idea to come to Sen. Elizabeth Warren's hearing knowing what you are getting into. Otherwise this happens. It starts getting really good around 1:40. At 2:30, the regulators say something baffling. And at 3:25, the senator expresses her disappointment with her usual eloquence.

TESS Is Better than Kepler--OMFG New Planets

The past year has been an exciting year in space exploration with thousands of exoplanets discovered, and with few that lay in their star's habitable zone. The astonishing thing, as mentioned in the link below is that Kepler surveyed only a small portion of the sky. TESS is going to look everywhere, and I can only imagine how much more will be discovered.

I like outerspace. A lot. I want to go there, and I wish I were immortal.
